OK, I haven't actually read it. But I WILL. Because the author is my friend's mom and since my friend is an amazing writer and all around awesome person, I'm assuming she got her writing talent from her mom. So, genetically, this book must rule like a ruling thing. Buy it.

This book is a true magnum opus as it tries to cover not only interfaces but also the effects of interfaces on the behavior of materials; for example, creep, deformation, etc.

Review Date: 2000-07-22
In his travel memoir/meditation, Into and Out of Dislocation, C.S. Giscombe takes us not just back to the Bristish Columbian landscape of his long poem Giscome Road, but also traces the routes of other journeys and the geography of both "home" and "away from home." With Giscombe, the reader wends her way by bicycle, train, auto, boat and rarely by airplane to Oxford, Jamaica, Victoria, B.C., Prince George, B.C., Vancouver, Seattle, Bloomington, IL, Ithaca, NY, etc. The author sets off on long-distance solo bicycle adventures, his guiding principle seemingly always to push further. Giscombe pays little mind to chronology when meditating on his experiences in various locations. All journeys seem to turn back upon themselves, bump up against other times and places, until they blur together into one continuous quest along the particular edges of landscape, of family and heredity, and of cultural and racial complexity. The author's formal task is to research the "facts" about John R. Giscome, the Jamaican miner, explorer and possible relation whose name graces several geographical features near Prince George, B.C. The "facts" that we finally stumble upon, however, are those of visibility and invisibility with their attendant pleasures, accomodations, and responsibilities. Along the way there is much talk of miscegenation, bears, good and bad restaurants, and even Big Foot. This book is a thinking person's delight.

THE fracture care reference

Felt by many to be the Gold standard in orthopedic fracture care. The text is comprehensive, providing in-depth literature reviews and the authors prefered method of treatment. The text formatting style makes it difficult to quickly/easily obtain the "need to know" information regarding a particular topic. Overall, well worth it.

While caring for an active population, I find this book invaluable. The organization is excellent and easy to reference. Concise diagnostic modalities and treatment protocols that are up to date and practical. Many illustrations and diagrams to aid in the diagnosis and treatment. Overall an excellent reference guide for any primary care provider.

Emergency Orthopedics

I am a PA in an ED and this book is invaluable, although I did an ortho rotation this book gives the current thoughts/treatment modalities for injuries. I have found that it deliniates what needs surgery now vs. in the near future or what can be splinted and follow up. (That is always the tough thing to figure out without experience.) This is an easy read and great from the beginning up to advanced ortho. It is well organized and goes by sections of the extremities (upper arm vs lower arm, hands then fingers). It has helpful sections on MRI, CT and other basic radiology studies for ortho purposes. Well worth the money!

Anarchism and Poststructuralism
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-28
I thought this book was great. It deals with issues of power, subjectivity and political identity through a comparative analysis of anarchist and poststructuralist political philosophy. It is one of the few substantial works of political theory to take this comparison seriously and draws out startling parallels between thinkers like Bakunin, Foucault, Stirner and Derrida. Unlike a lot of texts in philosophy and politics it is clearly written and well argued, and would transcends the narrow academic focus. It would be approachable for anyone interested in the subject of radical politics today.

Radical Politics for the Twenty-First Century

The great thing about this book is that it while it is a rigorous work of political and social philosophy it reaches a wider audience than the academy. It discusses a range of thinkers, from nineteenth century Russian anarchists like Bakunin and Kropotkin to contemporary postsructuralists like Foucault, Deleuze and Lacan, finding a common thread of anti-authoritarianism, and using these insights to deconstruct ideas about power, subjectivity and radical political action in the wake of the failure of Marxist revolutionary projects.

Unrivaled in this topic

John Nye published with Sir Michael Berry a paper titled "Dislocations in Wave Trains" [Proc. Royal Soc. London A, _336_ 165 (1974)]. This work helped catapult optics into a new realm, part of which is explored in this book.

The first chapter or so can easily capture the interest of anyone (with a strong scientific background). Patterns on the bottom of swimmings pools and reflections in coffee cups are mathematically analyzed in a clear way. Subsequent chapters are much more "deep" but equally fascinating.

This is an incredibly specialized book. That said, it is a treasure to anyone interested in this or related fields (singular optics, mathematical optics, wave optics, etc). It would be a valuable addition to a library (university, lab, etc.).

Well-written and nicely illustrated book

Review Date: 2001-12-31
This book is somewhat difficult to review because I think the book will appeal mostly to readers with a somewhat specialist interest in the subject. Those readers will discover that the book is very well-written and thought through. It contains numerous interesting discussions, elaborations, etc. Everything very nicely illustrated. The author clearly demonstrates how to present specialist material in a lively manner.

For the more general public (i.e. scientists, physicists, mathematicians) it will appear as a specialized book, which may draw and keep their attention because the material is well presented. It may also be that they quickly lose interest, because of the specialist character of the book. But then, the author is not to blame.

This book in many areas are too dogmatic with lack of explanation
Important key topics like new plating systems, ilizarov,
newer EF, CAOS, periprosthetic # have either been not discussed or done too inadequately
May be good only for medical students

Mediocre
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-14
Many important topics in this book are presented
not in a cutting edge manner and the stuff can
easily be found in all standard text;
Newest topics in trauma like minimal invasive
surgery, computer aided surgery, new AO thinking
that everyone doing trauma is talking about these days
not covered or grossly inadequate
I have 2 juniors who used to work with one of the authors,
they told me there is a great discrepancy between
what that author claims he would do in his
little text, as compared to his actual practice
in real life. I hope this is not the case, but
if it is, readers will not be pleased

Mediocre work at most

I originally got this book many years ago when the kids were in team sports and "sporting" sprains and twists of all sorts. They are grown up now, but still ask to look up stuff in this book. It is an excellent reference book and allows offers great self-help advice.

A little about alot of sports injuries.

This is a useful introductory level book providing an overview of a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries. This is not a book for those involved in the field of sports medicine.
