Truly, A Book That Will Get You To See Life In Perspective

When I had my heart broken and felt nothing would ever undo the damage, that depression medicine, counseling, talks with friends all helped but never really set my mind at ease....this book came to the rescue.

I have never read so many profound statements that were so meaningful until I read Jerry Bridges book here. It truly will get your head and heart straight, if you're hurting.....at least it did with me.

When your brain comprehends the fact that God is in control, that He knows what He's doing and that He has your best interests at heart, it makes it easier to accept the heartbreaks of life. Nobody has explained all of this better than Bridges in this book.

This book will greatly help those today that are going through difficult times. This author is easy to understand, and he makes his points effectively. The chapters are short and the application of "Trusting God even when Life Hurts" is excellent. This was written by a man that had gone through rough times himself and shows what great help the Lord was to Him, and is to us also who have had hard trials.

This book teaches (probably better than any other)that God is in tune and does care and is involved behind the scenes in YOUR life. It is a great book if you doubt God's care or observance during the hard times that life can deal. It provides many scriptures to support that God can be trusted and we can find security in trusting God - regardless of our circumstances.

This book brings very important principles of metallurgy and moreover usefull concepts to design products based on the worthy knowledge presented. Particularly the chapters about Fatigue, Fracture and Stresses Calculations in my opinion are of such importance to design robust products. The author is very didatic which makes the reading pleasant, of easy learning and application.

An excellent book

This book is a good one on metallurgy. It's loaded as it taps into several references. It's discourse is simple to the beginner and a good summary to the pro. I see it on the shelves of some academics I visit.

If you are a Mechanical, Materials, or Industrial Engineer, you will need this book somewhere down the road. I am currently in graduate studies, and virtually every professor in those three faculties has a well used copy. It is well written and very complete. I shopped around looking for a used copy, but most of them are used so often they're almost worn out.

An Essential

Good Undergraduate metallurgy books are hard to find, this one's an essential for any forging class and any metallurgist's bookshelf.

Thorough and comprehensive

Review Date: 2006-01-01
Metallurgy is one of the oldest established branches of materials science, and science in general. Yet many of the underlying principles, such as dislocation theory and plasticity, have only been explored within the last 100 years or so. As such, there is a wealth of information in metallurgy that one could learn. This book by G. Dieter is one of the better books to use to learn about metallurgy. Coming in at 800 pages even, this book is a thorough study of the principles behind mechanical metallurgy and is appropriate for both students in the field and practicing engineers. The book provides complete mathematical treatments of numerous subjects within mechanical metallurgy, including crystallography of defects, thermodynamics of plastic flow, kinetics, etc... The book is somewhat old-fashioned in that it leaves out more modern topics such as the use of computer simulations in metallurgy. Because of this, the book does not deserve 5 stars. But due to its breadth and coverage of other topics, it deserves 4 out of 5 stars.

The new "bible" for fracture care

Review Date: 2000-04-12
My program provided me with both Rockwood and Green as well as Browner and Jupiter's work and I consistently referenced Skeletal Trauma more frequently. It's more concise and provides the basics in an easy to understand format for the beginning orthopod. The pediatric edition is quick and easy to read but skimps on some important details and concepts that I feel are important for the neophyte, but the adult edition is above reproach. Highly recommended.

Expansive text on fracture management

Review Date: 2001-05-22
As an alternative reference text to Rockwood and Green's Fracture in Adults, this voluminous guide breaks down fracture management according to anatomical location and incorporates viable contemporary methods of fixation, with focus on the author's preferred method of surgical prep and exposure. As the second edition (1998), it encompasses many of the new techniques of fracture repair, but like many texts is not completely current on all topics once released. The chapters on preoperative evaluation and stabilization of the trauma patient are particularly good. The photographs and illustrations prove appropriate. Deficiences: pediatrics, tumor, and foot and ankle...but these topics can certainly be addressed with other texts such as Ogden's Skeletal Injury in the Child or Lovell and Winter's Pediatric Orthopaedics by Morrisy.

As an ortho resident, I have found this text to be very useful. It's easier and quicker to read than Rockwood & Green. Great for learning on the run while on call.

The Dislocation Theory Bible

Review Date: 2008-06-15
I first read this book as a graduate student in Materials Science. It was the assigned textbook for a graduate level course in dislocation theory. As a materials scientist working the the field of extended defects, I am not aware of any book that has the depth and breadth of Hirth and Lothe. This book is heavily mathematical, however, and not for the casual reader. Those who have benefited from an advanced undergraduate or graduate course in electricity and magnetism will find the stress and strain fields of dislocation lines similar to electric and magnetic fields. A number of different crystal lattices are addressed in this book, including the diamond cubic lattice that is essential to those of us studying semiconducting materials. This book also provides a good introduction to linear elasticity theory.

One of the classic texts on "The Concept of a Dislocation"
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-31
This classic text is a complete treatise on the concept of dislocations and their interactions with various other defects in crystalline materials. The dislocation concept is built up using basic theory of linear elasticity (Part 1 of the text). Hence, this book is ideal for someone with an elaborate background in Mechanics/Elasticity and looking to extend their backgroud in Crystal Plasticity from a Materials Science perspective. Parts 2-4 of the book will be of particular interest, as they deal with substantial Materials Science issues important at the atomic/meso-scale level.

For a Materials Scientist, while Part I might prove to be a challenge, as the references might not be as helpful as one might like (the authors do confess to not being exhaustive in their literature survey), Part 2-4 would be particularly useful in developing a basic intuition in the various dislocation-based phenomena important for understanding the various structure-property relationships that exist in crystalline materials.

This book was fascinating and really gave new depth as to dislocatory problems. Although occasionally going a little too in depth for us less than clever readers, it was still amusing in places. The book was very well illustrated and I particularly enjoyed the chapter about young Josephine and her dislocated pelvis. It isn't Janet and John go to the seaside but it isn't far away. The best thing I've read since Jane Ashers "cooking for beginners"

Alpert's "Fractures and Dislocations"

Alpert's paperback is the strongest pocketbook on orthopaedics that I have seen. Both as a general practitioner in the Air Force and as an Emergency Medicine resident at a Ivy League hospital I have used this book to describe fractures to orthopods who nearly always are impressed. Friends who are ortho housestaff recommend and use this book. One of the best

Excellent overview !

Review Date: 2004-04-20
In sciences, "simple" low-dimensional models are often called into play to understand and clarify fundamental processes involved in complicated physical phenomena. Universal models which can be applied to illustrate a variety of effects of different physical origin are rare and, therefore, they are of CRUCIAL importance.
Recently, with respect to this, Frenkel-Kontorova type models have attracted so much attention for their ability to describe a broad spectrum of phenomena of distinct physical origin as, for example, fundamental aspects in tribology and mass transport, Josephson transmission lines, DNA dynamics, charge-density waves, commensurable-incommensurable phase transitions and so on. It is possible to count almost 200 publications, in the last 5 years only, in the most relevant scientific journals related to Frenkel-Kontorova models.
Braun and Kivshar are undoubtedly internationally famous specialists in Solid State Physics and Nonlinear Physics of discrete dynamical systems, and their book represents certainly a comprehensive and exhaustive treatment (from fundamentals to recent and advanced developments) of the subject. Describing fundamental concepts and theoretical procedures of nonlinear dynamics, related numerical techniques and methods, down to possible experimental and technological applications based on this intriguing model and its generalizations, this book suits both the needs of students and beginners as well as the requests of most experienced researchers wishing to be acquainted with new and complementary aspects in this field. The table of contents, together with an up to date list of references, shows at first glance the comprehensiveness of the treatment.
Personally, as an active researcher in this field, I would highly recommend the book to both graduate students and any much more experienced scientist who is working or just interested in nonlinear dynamics and condensed matter modeling.

The definitive reference on the subject

Review Date: 2004-04-13
As an active researcher on this field, I find this book will become THE reference. The authors, with over 20 years of experience themselves, take you from the basics to the current hot topics. Their coverage is certainly exhaustive, with an up to date list of 876 references. All aspects of the Frenkel-Kontorova/sine-Gordon model are discussed, from statistical mechanics to the effect of forces through the thermal version. The mathematical details are provided but also commented upon in extent for the reader to grasp their implications. One point I particularly liked is that the connection between Frenkel-Kontorova and sine-Gordon is always kept in mind along the book, a point that had been an obscure one for me when touching upon different aspects of the problem. The chapter on applications helps make the link between the different disguises of the model. Finally, I do believe the book will be useful for a more general audience interested in nonlinear problems beyond those discussed, as most of the techniques and viewpoints apply in general. All in all, a must for researchers in nonlinear science and condensed matter models, and an excellent way to introduce oneself to this subject for anybody beginning to work on it, as no background is assumed.

Actually, this book does have an isbn number, but it was recycled by Abingdon for another book. The book's number is 0687098262

Robert McAfee Brown (1920-2001) was professor of theology and ethics at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA. This book is a sort of theological autobiography that chronicles the author's struggle to apply his faith to the turbulent times of his life, especially vis a vis the worldwide political happenings of his time (e.g. Vietnam, El Salvador, Nicaragua).

"The Space Between Us All"
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-17
The title of this first collection of short stories (1986) by Janette Turner Hospital says it all. These characters are dislocated by space, time, religion, education, unforeseen events, even death. And though they may travel to the four corners of the earth, whether it is India, Canada, the United States or Australia, they never really ever leave their homeland. When left unattended, their thoughts return there.

Most of these stories have hard sayings. A burn victim, formerly a pretty young girl ("Golden Girl") must face a reconstructed future with a reconstructed face. A dying woman ("The Dark Wood") who two days ago learned of her death sentence longs to putter in her tomatoes. A friend whom the narrator has just left is killed by an automobile in "Some Have Called Thee Mighty and Dreadful" leaving the narrator overcome with guilt: "If I had invited them back to our house. If I had only tilted time a few minutes to one side or the other. This is shock. Of course I am not responsible. Life is random, brutally indifferent." In "After Long Absence" a woman returns to Brisbane and her family whose fundamentalist religion she has long since left behind. Her teetotaler father, so as not to embarrass her in front of her friends in a university lounge, "takes polite sips" of white wine. She, on the other hand, is unwilling to select a passage and read from the Bible as is the custom for visitors to do in her parents' home at the evening meal. "It cannot be a concession anywhere near as great as my father's two sips of wine. . . Yet I canot do it. 'I am sorry,' I say quietly, hating myself. . . Outside I hug the mango tree and weep for the kind of holy innocence that can inflict appalling damage; and because it is clear that they, the theologically rigid, are more forgiving than I am."

As always, Ms. Hospital gets right to the heart of the matter as well as the hearts of her readers.
