Helpful Votes: 9 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-21
Describes observations of clinical interviews between various medical practitioners, namely folk healers, temple medicine men, and Chinese style and Western style physicians, and their patients. Stresses the importance of adopting proper cultural perspectives, making one's interpretations within that framework, and relying on direct observation. Urges an integration of social and cultural methods into the routine training of doctors, so as to enable a more humane and appropriate clinical practice.

Important basic resource
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-21
This book is an important basic resource for people with SCI and the people who love them. While the material is heavily slanted to male sexuality issues after SCI, some female issues are also addressed. The format is designed in questions and answers, which allows the reader to skip around and read whatever topics they are interested in, or ready to deal with.

The book could use more detail in many areas, and suffers from a lack of any diagrams or drawings to show positions, sexual devices, etc., but is the only book written for people with SCI about this topic for many years. It could be seen as an introduction to the topic as well for many healthcare professionals, but would need to be follow-up by reading more from the professional literature.

Informative But a Little Bit Too Technical
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-13
I was too overwhelmed by a lot of technical jargons to catch the depth of what it was all about. Maybe this book is suitable for specialists rather than people with developmental disabilities. The author explained Autistic Spectrum Disorders in various aspects of our daily lives such as nutrition, physical therapies, and some diseases caused by symptoms of the disabilities, and etc. I agree she tried to specify each of ASD according to the readers' questions and her writing style is pretty comprehensible to me. However, if possible, I would have liked her to give us readers several solutions to cope with each disorder. I might be into it if I was a specialist or knew a lot more about ASD, Asperger Syndrome, ADHD and other developmental disabilities.

I was hoping this book would offer some ideas or inspirations on how to cope with emetophobia or at the very least how the author managed to overcome this debilitating phobia. Instead, it merely describes what us emetophobes already suffer on a daily basis.

FANTASTIC READ!!

Incredible book to show a doctor, family member, friend, or partner to help them get a better grasp of emetophobia and everything that goes along with it. I highly reccomend it to anyone who is or knows someone who is suffering from emetophobia.

Not one helpful suggestion.

Don't buy this book, it is basically a long definition of what emetophobia is. Doesn't even have one suggestion on how to fix it.

Covers the Basic Facts, But Doesn't Offer Much In the Way of Advice or Support

I was shocked to find that there was actually going to be a book published about emetophobia, and ordered it a month before it was released. I was hoping for a little more advice, coping mechanisms, maybe just some reassurances that it's O.K. to be afraid, and that it's O.K. to medicate something that can't just be counseled away. I was hoping for a bit more in the experiences department as well. After years of not even knowing there was a name for the fear, and only having a few select message boards to communicate with other emets on, I thought maybe this would be a breakthrough.

It is a good read, just because it's the only one dedicated only to emetophobia specifically, but it could have been done better. I would recommend that any emet buy a few copies, this is a must for any close friend or relative. I bought a few of them, I gave one to a friend that came to me after discovering I had to phobia to confide in me that he had the same fear, and I gave the other copies to my husband and my mother. It's been more helpful for the outsiders than for me, which is still a huge step in the right direction. For so long, when approaching a doctor or even a psychiatrist with this issue, we've all heard the famous line, "but nobody likes to puke". And it wasn't until I responded to my psychiatrist that he may be right about that, except he might have missed that one episode of Jerry Springer, but is everyone so afraid of it that when exposed to the situation they actually bring a loaded gun to their head? I then handed him a copy of the book. I'm not sure if it was my comment or the book that helped him comprehend that this was indeed a fear that had taken over my life, but either way, I'm thankful the book exists.

No help here!

I anxiously awaited the arrival of this book thinking it would help me cope with emetophobia, since part of the title is "coping with Extreme fear of Vomiting". Unfortunately, all this book is about is the author's and a few other's personal experiences with the phobia. If what you need is to know that there are others out there suffering with the same phobia, it's great, it describes every irrational thought I've ever had about vomiting and the problems that it causes in every day life. If what you need is a book to help people in your life understand what you go through, it's also good because it really describes every aspect of the phobia. If what you're looking for is a book that will help you deal with it, look elsewhere!

Useless for Real Aspies
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-17
Mildly interesting autobiographical sketch of someone possibly with mild Aspergers dealing with the business world. Same sort of general advice as other business success books but little practical application. Definitely needs far more detail to be useful for Aspies. Very thin book, grossly overpriced since you can get better info free on the Web.

For Aspie, as well as neurotypical, readers, I recommend Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People instead.

It may surprise some people to know that people with Asperger syndrome can have demanding careers and be successful business people, which is probably why this is the first book I have seen specifically for people either in that position or aiming to be. Drawing on his own experiences the author looks at issues such as office politics, coping with pressure, managing staff, and building credibility. It is very pleasing not only to see that a more diverse range of employment issues are finally being recognised but that the advice regarding them is coming from people on the spectrum themselves.

Good information, poorly written

I have Asperger's Syndrome and was struggling with integrating into the workplace. This book provided a lot of great insight and information, and helped me see how to more effectively operate in a corporate business environment. The book is poorly written, however, as if the writer did it in one draft without the help of an editor. Grammar and sentence structure are often awkward. But I still recommend the book, especially since there aren't many AS books out there for business professionals (most are for dealing with AS children).

Too little detail

Speaking as someone with Asperger's syndrome who would like to progress to managerial roles, I was hoping that this book would provide me with lots of valuable insights about how to harness the advantages and control the disadvantages posed by my condition.

Unfortunately, the book is far too thin on detail. Malcolm Johnson provides a few concrete examples of how the tide of events was determined by his condition in a managerial situation, but this book is of little use to me because such examples are few and far between.

Maybe I am already aware of the points he raised (probably because he raised so few points), but I felt a bit ripped off by this book, as I don't really feed I gained any new insights or much about how to operate in a managerial role in spite of having Asperger's syndrome.

Malcolm Johnson shows that he is capable of being perceptive, but you read this book and get the feeling that you haven't learned anything and that there is still far more to learn before you can even think about improving yourself as a manager.

This book is an insult. I am a dummy by no one's estimation. However, I have two different forms of arthritis. I developed them without ever reading a word on the topic, as I'm sure many arthritis sufferes have. That there would be a book offering instructions on getting arthritis for the feeble minded is an insult to all the noises I make getting out of low chairs!!

The good, the bad and the equivocal...all rolled into one!

I found this book to be informative and entertaining but also somewhat disturbing. There seems to be a tendency to overemphasize so-called "alternative" therapy, and the information is presented in such a way as to cajole the unwary reader into thinking that mainstream and alternative treatments are equivalent. Curiously, neither of the authors is a physician, and the book hardly mentions the existence of the "rheumatologist",i.e.,the physician who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. I found this surprising at best, and also a bit offensive. It was clear that this is not a completely objective or balanced guide to arthritis and its management.

Informative and Practical

I've had arthritis for a long time, so I was happy to find this well-rounded, informative and practical arthritis book. I learned more from this book than I have from all the others I've read - combined. It gives a good overview of all kinds of arthritis, the ways they diagnose it and treatments. It also talks about the drugs used for the disease, their pros and cons. There's also good information on supplements, exercise, body alignment, and more. I especially like the nice balance the authors struck between traditional and alternative medicine. There are a lot of new ideas in the book I hadn't heard of before - some of which worked well for my arthritis. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has arthritis.

Price not editors/authors fault

First, I agree the set is outrageously priced. However, the content of these books is EXCELLENT because the editors worked very hard on this project. I know them and they have dedicated their lives to helping children and families with autism--including MY family. No one was more shocked at the price of this two volume set than they were. I was also a contributor. Note: neither myself nor any other contributor was paid for their submission--we did it to HELP people. But $200 is outrageous, I agree. Save your dough! If you need suggestions for what books to buy email me!

If you want to buy the best quality books in the autism field at the most reasonable prices, stick to books from the Autism Asperger Publishing Company (AAPC) and avoid big publishers who don't care. Brenda Myles, one of the editors of this set, had written a book and the would-be publishers wanted to sell it for too much money so her husband, Keith Myles started the publishing company in order to sell it CHEAPER. The most important thing to both of them was that this information got out there in order to help these kids on the spectrum. AAPC started with that one book, Difficult Moments, and within six years became the second largest autism publishing company in the world. Buy your books from them because they really care about our families and understand our challenges, financial and otherwise. Among the many things AAPC does to help people is the free of charge online newsletter which you can download at www.asperger.net

This book has many positive attributes

I believe that there is something for everyone in this book. We didn't find it negative at all.
There are many different worksheets in this book. We chose to use this in many different ways, over the course of several weeks.
Our school psychologist also had a copy, and some of the worksheets were done at school with her, either alone, or in a small group.
We chose to take it slow, allowing our son to move at his own pace. We found it really nice to have a book to help us introduce autism to him, since he never really came to us to ask about his differences. (Two psychologists told us it was time.)
As we started progressing through the book, he started asking more questions, and actually wanting to do more of the worksheets!
I really recommend this to parents who are struggling with HOW to explain autism to their children. Just use your own common sense and use the various worksheets in the way that makes the most sense for your child.
