A Psychological Approach

Review Date: 2000-07-01
Since Phillips is a practicing psychologist, this book reflects his background by concentrating on the emotional aspects of living with an ostomy - specifically issues of fear, depression, anger, etc. Phillips does acknowledge that these are issues more likely to be experienced by individuals who have suddenly underwent surgery due to a diagnosis of cancer or a sudden complication of IBD like toxic megacolon. Individuals with IBD consciously choosing the surgery often have a more positive attitude and suffer fewer emotional downswings because of the overall improvement in their post-surgery life. Phillips includes the usual chapters related to family members and their coping issues, which is very helpful, but the overall lack of first person accounts, and the slightly outdated information make The Ostomy Book the preferred book on this topic. Still, this volume would be useful if the new ostomate or a family member is having difficulty adjusting.

A fine textbook..if you can understand clinical case studies

I found this book to be of value. As a special education major with an emphasis on children with severe disabiities I found there was a lot of information in this book.
But due to the style of writing contained here, it is more of a reference book than something a student can use to gain quick knowedge of their field.

A Very Impressive and Academic Work

This book is impressive in it completeness. Unfortunately, its tone is extremely formal, and its suggested retail price is very high. It focuses almost exclusively on the psychology of acquired deafness, and says very little about the day-to-day challenges deafened people face.

Student review---Creighton University

In her book "Disability, Society, and the Individual," Julie Smart grapples with the definition of disability, its complications, implications, and the role it plays in society. The author touches on a broad range of disabilities, both physical and psychological. In defining disability, Smart clearly differentiates disadvantages from disability. Insight from several disabled people is included to give readers a first person perspective. The author goes into detail about legislation relating to the disabled, particularly the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed into effect by George Bush in 1990. The ADA has facilitated the access of people with disabilities into many aspects of public life. She mentions that it has also inspired several advances in current technology, assisting even those without disability.

The purpose of this book is to introduce readers to how the viewpoints from society and a person with a disability are related. This book provides an introduction to this complex, but important topic. The first two chapters are about defining disabilities, the models of disability, and also list six reasons why there are more disabilities today then ever before. Chapters three through six are about sources of prejudices, effects of discrimination, and examples of these effects. Chapters seven through nine discuss the amount of severity, degree of visibility, the presence of chronic pain, and the stigma and prejudice, and how that affects the individuals with disabilities. Disability is a multifaceted topic, and people need to be more aware of its dimensions. This book is a good starting point.

Behavioral Modification program

This is the grandfather of all behavioral modification information, although it is long out of date. Foxx's information works whether or not you are using it in the area of teaching the DD client; it works with dogs, cats and chinchillas as well as people because its principles are universal. I recommend it for anyone who needs to understand how to train using positive reinforcment techniques.

FINE SOURCE

This book reviews the major mood disorders. In a way, it is a focused regurgitation of the DSM-IV or TR editions. It provides limited information of specific relevance to the intellectually disabled population. Being published two years before the diagnostic manual for those with intellectual disabilities, I can not wait to contrast the two books. While it tended, more often than not, to sophomorically review diagnostic criteria for each mood disorder, it yielded some useful information on applications to populations with intellectual disabilities. I think that it is worth the used price, perhaps a bit less.

Too damn expensive!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-26
How is it that a book with 300 pages can cost $80? I see brand new books in book stores all around the US that cost no more than $30. I guess Ms. Scheetz, along with the publisher, know that college students will be required to use the book, so why the hell shouldn't they charge $80. Thanks for making my college years thin on cash!
