how about a newer edition?

The book was published in 1993 and still retains considerable information about learning disabilities, and how these are influenced
by brain abnormalities. Many topics are covered. Notably Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, aphasia and dyslexia.
But perhaps the authors could be induced to come out with a more recent edition? There surely must have been considerable progress in the interim. Especially in studying the functional anatomy of the brain. Improvements in diagnostics and the ability to stimulate ever smaller regions of the brain have been significant.

offers a logical way of looking at problem behaviors and their cause for it. in the bigger picture, it really has helped
me to look at people who exhibit harmful or "difficult" behavior in a more compassionate way. given this perspective, i feel
that it has truely helped me to connect to my students with difficult behavior in a more effective and meaningful way.

Having spent this, my first year in college, volunteering with two newly-blind individuals, this book was a welcome addition
to my makeshift repertoire of ways to help my elderly friends live freely despite their disability. The book includes great
ideas for mobilizing blind individuals, increasing access to household objects and appliances, and generally instilling
in them once again the feeling of self-sufficiency they lost with their sight.

Hear what the children say!

This book describes the findings of research which involved interviewing children with dyslexia, their mothers, teachers and
other professionals involved. The book is aimed at teachers, and there is a focus on the impact of teachers and school on these
children's lives. As a parent (and not a teacher) of a child with dyslexia, this book has been very informative. It is grim
reading in parts because it describes the negative attitudes in parts of the education system to children with dyslexia. However
it is easy to read, jargon free, clearly structured and has useful summaries at the end of each chapter.I found the children's
views about their experiences of dyslexia particularly interesting as other books have not included this crucial subject.
Their perspective highlights the problems of dealing with a hidden disability. Reading about the mother's views and ways of
coping was equally important and reassuring. This is the book I choose to read when I need help to understand my child and
his difficulties. A 'must have' for any parent of a child with dyslexia.

Low Vision is a condition that affect as many as eleven million people. Among its leading causes are glaucoma, macular degeneration,
retina damage, diabetic retinopathy, inoperable cataracts, and other vision disorder. "Low Vision" is the first comprehensive
guide to show the "hard of seeing" how to retain, maximize, and even enhance their existing site, and lead active lives.
This is an amazing book for people who help rehabilitate people with low-vision or who are blind, as well as an excellent
book to learn how to cope and recover for sufferers.

Because the Guides have changed so dramatically, this book is a "must have" for those who need a primer on impairment ratings.
The book is filled with helpful information that illustrates the difference between the AMA Guides: 4th edition and the AMA
Guides: 5th edition. Professionals who must rate impairments or understand ratings should purchase this book; they will find
themselves reaching for it again and again. As an attorney, I find it invaluable.

Trauamtic Brain Injury Physical Therapist Uses Approaches

Review Date: 2000-11-08
As a physical therapist treating clients with traumatic brain injuries I have found Ms. Farber's book an invaluable tool in
increasing my understanding of the complexities of the central nervous system. I have used approaches outlined in this text
to guide me in development of treatment programs to both facilitate and inhibit desirable cognitive, behavioral, and motor
outcomes. Particularly helpful to me have been the information presented regarding the autonomic nervous system and the sensory
stimulation that can be used to influence levels of arousal in the comatose or obtunded client or decrease the agitation in
clients with disorganized cortical activity.
