This book is a gift to anyone who is involved in understanding the
complexity of special education law. It provides clear, reliable
information in a format that is easy to read and easy to locate
information. I've found this book to be a valuable resource when I want
to check my understanding or when I need to explain something about
special education law to parents. It's great to have all the information
I need in one place!

This book is a good book to read if you want to know more about disabilities. I liked the wide range of people it told about. They are put in order from the year of the persons birth. The downside is that the book can get boring at places telling about organizations for disabled people.

I found myself drawn in to this book

Extraordinary People with Disabilities by Kent and Quinlan (Grolier Publishing 1996) This excellent book tells the stories of over 50 outstanding individuals who overcame their disabilities. It is written so that one can choose to read short segments. However, when I picked it up, I felt energized and needed to read it cover-to-cover. The people profiled are from a variety of racial and economic backgrounds. Many of these individuals had physical disabilities but some of the stories profile people with learning or emotional disabilities. Through these stories, the book takes an activist stance. It tells of many who not only overcame their own disabilities, but went on to help other disabled people. The stories make it easier to understand the points of view of disability rights activists. The final chapter gives an overview of important new technological aids for the disabled. It explains why some of these aids are controversial among the disabled community. A glossary gives succinct definitions of many of the terms used in the book. An appendix at the back of the book list many of the major organizations that advocate for individuals with physical and mental disabilities. There is also a section listing related books and journals. I would recommend this book to high school students and adults. Carol E Watkins, M.D. Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist

An Informative and Practical Book for Parents of ADD Teens

Finally, a book that really explains ADD in teenagers and how it affects their abilites and lives.... As a mother of a 13 year old boy with ADHD, I was lost. We were able to help him manage his ADHD until puberty hit. Suddenly, it was a whole new ballgame. None of our discipline techniques worked anymore. After reading this book, I have a much better understanding of the disease and how it really impairs people in certain aspects of daily functioning. Some of the behviors I thought were defiant, I now realize are part of the ADHD make up. This book provides explainations of how ADD affects teens depending on their personality type and which behaviors are normal teen behaviors and which are related to the ADD. It gives practical advice on how to handle discipline issues, how to deal with schools to help them better educate your teen and how to help your teen learn to function within the limits of his/her ADD. I am so glad I found this book!

An excellent guide to parenting an ADD teen.

Recently two of my four children were diagnosed with ADD. I began reading everything I could on the subject. Often the information was confusing, or presented in such a technical way as to be of little help. Giving Your ADD Teen a Chance is presented clearly and with great warmth. I felt good about my children's life. Ms. Weiss gives helpful, relevant advice, loaded with common sense. I have recommended this book to anyone I can find, including several mental health professionals. If your child is diagnosed with ADD, whether or not they have reached their teenage years, this is a MUST read.

As a parent of a blind 7 year-old, I will use this book to help me to encourage my daughter to become an independent and confident traveler. I can help her learn the skills of blindness. This book would also be extremely helpful for a parent with a baby or toddler who is blind including those with multiple disabilities. Mr. Cutter suggests a partnership between parents and O&M teachers. This book would be invaluable in a O&M teacher preparation program and for current teachers. An in-depth discussion of cane use, selection, and teaching is discussed including the use of a "teaching cane." I was encouraged by the positive attitude of this book toward blindness.

Yes, I'm the Author's brother.

We too (his family) have lived the experience of paralysis with him.

I think it is much easier for us to understand the emotions - the anger, frustration, sense of loss - that he discusses in the book.

An enormous portion of the credit for his lengthy survival with this terrible ailment is due to his wife, Divina. However, his tremendous will to live despite the loss of his most loved abilities - speech and delicious foods - must also receive a full share of credit.

His quest for knowledge and the desire to disseminate that knowledge has never weakened.

My brother is an incredible man!

Media Madness presents years of research to demonstrate that the mass media predominately portray people with mental illness as violent, frightening or ridiculous. Throughout the book he presents those images based on hard facts, and at each step he carefully sets the record straight on the correct use of words, images and psychological terminology. I was employed as a working journalist for 20 years before becoming the public relations person for a large social service agency. Gradually, I began to see the stigma created for people with mental illness by these inaccurate, biased and sometimes mean statements and images. "The stigma is worse than the disease," is a common refrain among people with mental illness. These are people who hold responsible jobs, have friends and families and pay taxes. But they don't tell anyone about their illness because they are afraid of behing classified with the negative images of mental illness perpetrated by the news media. They keep quiet. Millions of them. They live with a secret and it takes an emotional and psychological toll. They tell me they feel like they are "acting" in life because they cannot reveal the facts about their mental illness. The words, images and downright inaccuracies we read or see in the mass media are creating tension and misery in the lives of millions of Americans. Today, we would not use the terms "nigger", "gimp" or "girlie" for Black people, people with disabilities or women. But we tolerate the use of "psycho," "nut case" or "loonie." We would not call people with heart disease the "cardiacs" but we tolerate "the mentally ill" as if the disorder completely defines the lives of people who happen to have one of these disorders. Thank you Dr. Wahl for your research and for sharing the results in this book. As a journalist and public relations professional, I appreciate the guidance for bringing in a new era of language about mental illness. As a person who has bipolar disorder, I thank you for helping reduce the stigma so someday I can tell my coworkers about this part of my life.

An important book

This book not only opens the reader's eyes to the way stigma against mental illness is created and perpetuated by the mass media; it also makes one think twice about all the information we receive from the entertainment industry. You'll never watch TV the same way again. It should be required reading for all Communications students and all Psychology students, social work students, theater students . . . .

this is required reading for a class that I am taking. Since it is required - the text could be considered perfect - without it I would be unable to complete the class.

Other than that, the book is well organized, thorough, and dense with information. A good text.

A must read for the layman and the professional.

Prof. Falvo has produced a book that clearly outlines not only the medical concerns, but the very real psychological aspects of chronic illness that are frequently misunderstood. Specific examples are used throughout the book and it is quite readable to someone who is not a medical professional like myself. The author shares her insights and experience to provide the groundwork for trying new approaches.

The book also cites numerous references for someone who is interested in pursuing additional research. I can certainly recommend it for anyone interested in the topic.

This is definitely a book you want to have in your home if you have children of any ages. And definitely a must for every classroom. The book addresses the everyday issues faced by short statured people, through the eyes of a very unique, intelligent and well rounded young man. A young man, like countless other short statured people in the world, that have not let their height hold them back. This dynamic young man obviously has a shining future ahead of himself. Hopefully this book, and Joshua's message will open people eyes, and educate them. I have 4 children, and they love this book, becuase Joshua is our friend and we love him, and we have seen him face his challenges throughout his life, and triumph!. When you read this uplifting book, you will understand why

I first read Nobody's Perfect a few years ago when I met Nancy Miller. I wasn't searching for a book on living with children who have special needs but once I opened the book and started reading, I realized immediately that this was a book for everyone. Not only are we all touched in some way by special needs, we are also faced with life decisions, unexpected changes, catastrophes, emergencies, losses, illness, struggles... the list goes on. There are tools in this book that are valuable to all of us, whether our struggle is parenting a special needs child, or handling an illness or a crises of any type. I remember settling in with the book and beginning to read the opening stories written by Nancy's co-authors: Susie, Diane, Janet and Stephanie, also known as "The Moms." How did they adapt? How did they deal with their emotions? (and there are plenty of them!) What stages did they go through? Admiration set in as I read on. I've been able to take so many treasures from this book and apply them to everyday life. And you will too...
