This book is written for you as the teacher, with guidelines for helping a special needs kid become a true member of the classroom,
and using the resources of parents, the paraprofessional and resource specialists to help you teach to all students in your
class, including those with specail needs. This is an excellent book for parents to read and share during IEP's and full
inclusion discussions. The focus is finding ways for the classroom teacher to directly teach the student, rather than isolating
the student off in the corner with a paraprofessional who tries to be his teacher. We're using these ideas with our middle
school son.

(I have not yet read the second edition of this book but it is reasonable to assume that it is an updated version of the first
edition, which is the book I am referring to.) This is an extraordinary book which reviews the entired field of social
structure and mental illness. (In fact my only objection to the book is the title, which suggests a far narrower field than
is actually covered in the work.) Warner seems to have read all the relevant literature and has the distinct advantage of
being able to place studies of mental health in a social, historical and cross-cultural context. His analysis is thorough
and creative and he makes a very persuasive case that the predominant causes of mental illness, including schizophrenia,
are more deeply rooted in the social system than the myopic, insulated views of most psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists
can envision. His arguments against the "social drift" hypothesis and other self serving illusions of contemporary psychotherapeutica
reaserch are extremely important. His willingness to incorporate insights from a variety of social thinker, including Marx
(yet, that Marx) give the book a deep analyitic resonance. It is not accidental that this book is not widely known for
it does not fit easily into the reified bioligical accounts of mental illness that have been playing havoc with the field
for the last 25 years or so.

This book highlights the ability of resilience and adaptation to produce change by describing turning points in the lives
of people with disabilities. Interweaving those compelling stories with popular thought and research evidence, the authors
show how understanding the resilience of people with disabilities may help all readers create meaning in life.

REVERSALS is the story of a woman who, though quite bright, had an impossible time learning to read and spell. She didn't
find out till she was in her 20s that she had dyslexia. In my opinion, Eileen Simpson was--and is--one courageous and resilient
lady. Because she grew up during an era when dyslexia, and LD in general, was unheard of, she was the victim of repeated
misunderstandings. She was repeatedly accused of being lazy, careless, unmotivated, etc. In fact, her 4th-grade year was
the worst school year she ever endured, due to a strict, authoritarian teacher and an equally strict aunt. That she never
gave up, and was able to learn to read and spell in the end, is tribute to both her strength AND her intelligence. For
finding the courage to disclose her dyslexia for the benefit of others when it would have been so much easier to keep trying
to hide it, I applaud her. To anyone who wants to learn about LD and its effect on those who have it, I highly recommend
her book!

I am a physician. I had the privilege, while in medical school, of taking a one-on-one rotation with Dr. Joel Howell, MD,
PhD, Victor Vaugh Professor of the History of Medicine. He gave me a monster list of books to read; and then we would sit
together for an hour or so and discuss each one I read. Outstanding experience.
Well, this little gem was on his list.
If you have read and "got" anything by Noam Chomsky, or Howard Zinn, you will "get" this book.
After being award an MBA from Stanford (hence, I can confidently say I very well understand the "business" of medicine) and practising medicine for 20 years in both the public and private sector, I have come to the conclusion that Mr. Brown's thesis is on the money.

As an Occupational Therapist working in the field of young people with disability,I often find it difficult to acquire reading
material which justifies purchasing. It is heartening therefore to discover that Sands and Wehmeyer have co-edited a wonderful
"Life-Span" book. This book examines the real possibility of seamless transitions from youth to old age, for any person
with a disability. It is written with great sensitivity, and the chapter by Doll is particularly exciting in its "forward-thinking".
I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone working in the field of disability, and I feel it would be
of special interest to parents of adolescents with a disability.I just couldnt put it down.....
