There are those who teach ABOUT technology, and then write a text and there are those who DO technology and write about their experiences and insights. Scherer is a doer. This MUST READ book is packed with information and practical strategies, but it adds real-life personal stories to weave together and make sense of the many scattered pieces we know as "special education" today. This book is a real treat. It reads like a novel but leaves you with much wisdom as well as useful ideas and insights.

I've not read all of it; I'm behind on my reading, but so far I like it. I read the outline of the book, and that's how I formed my opinion.

Majia Nadesan's book on autism is one that must be read before or in conjuction with existing works on the subject; particularly research that emphasizes the biological nature of the disease. Nadesan's book offers those diagnosed with autism and their families a much greater chance of mediating autistic characteristics by focusing on culture and society as factors that contribute to the construction of the affliction.

The overpowering result of Nadesan's research, in my opinion, is that medical science itself, ironically, is circumscribed by society's refusal or inability to recognize it's own role in creating and treating illnesses such as autism. Nadesan's rationale that autism (or any mental illness for that matter) is created through society's verbal and symbolic articulation of the illness as well as one's genetic history allows science and society to work in concert rather than in opposition.

As both a researcher and the mother of an "autistic" child, Nadesan's work offers a much more balanced and insightful understanding of autism and its implications for society.

This book offers a clear explanation of the differences in therapy focus in Education versus Health. It offers a sound rationale for the terms of reference for therapists working in Education and is a must-read for therapists transitioning from health to the education setting. Apart from identifying the therapist's role in removing barriers to learning, it also offers insight into the consultation role, collaboration and communication. This text is not just valuable for therapists; it enables other special education workers to get an understanding of what therapists in Education have to offer.

I read this book because my cousin has a similar disease and I was looking for resources for her teenage daughter. This book is an excellent overview of the grieving process that a family goes through when they realize that a disease is going to change their lives forever. It gives teenagers practical advice on where to look for help, coping with your parent's anger and frustration, and balancing caring for yourself and your parent. I also read "Coping with Being Gifted" in the same series and it was just as well written and balanced.

From start to finish, the author's provide a wealth of information necessary for the care of this unique population. From sexuality to genetic influences, the issues are current and insightful. A must have reference for all nurses working in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities nursing

Along with the trend of managed care and the need for better and effective services, cost-effective and outcome studies in mental health field become more and more important. This book arrives in time. The authors outlined related concepts step by step in a logical sequence, and used precise words to state systemic review without lengthy explanations, so that the reader can read and understand easily. The reader can even design his own research after reading through chapter two to nine, because the covered range in related fields was so comprehensive that any question a starter want to ask is included. It is the best book discussing research methods that I ever read.

Lorenzo Milam is a writer, reporter, and radio broadcaster who had polio in his youth and has become an outspoken spokesman for the concerns of paraplegics and quadraplegics of all kinds -- or "cripples," as he so defiantly calls them. This book is both a plea for compassion for the "disabled" and an eloquent manual for spiritual liberation, mainly for the disabled, but which can be read with benefit by anyone.

I have repeatedly dipped into the book over the last few years as I am a health care worker with an interest in anthropology and health. The book reflects the key interest areas in the health care arena and uses anthropological interpretations to uncover new meaning and understanding. The topics covered include reproductive health, new technologies in health care, gender issues and places the interpretation of culture as the cornerstone to real understanding. I heartily recommend it to all my colleagues as well as my students.
