I bought this book to explain my son's severe CP to mydaughter. She is only 3, so much younger than the recommendedage. However,
the text is pretty simple to understand. But...the illustrations are excellent. The little girl in the book really looks
like she has CP and they don't really sugar coat things. I like that because it's relates to my daughter's real world (as
opposed to idealizing the CP child). Also, the book talks about good things and bad things so it has an evenhanded treatment.
All in all, I think this is a great book for explaining severe CP to siblings and others.

I cannot emphasize enough the hope this book has given me for my 12 year old son. This book explains what an oral-motor program
is with case summaries of boys with autism who have school programs. The items to use and how to do it are all detailed within
the pages of this book.
It is described in detail what the various techniques will achieve for the child with feeding issues and lack of imitation or initiating speech sounds. This should be done both in the home and school and can be practiced with teacher, therapist or aide at school and be a program for all students. This can easily be adapted into the school schedule and photos can help the nonverbal child know what is expected.
I highly recommend this book and wish it was around 9 or 10 years ago when my child was younger. I liked that the photos and case summaries are of boys in the age range of my son who is 12. There is help for the child that stuffs food in their mouth, and cannot tolerate new foods. This is a quick read of only 121 pages. You will need a highlighter with this book.

My own daughter came to Mt. Vernon Hospital less than a year after Brian. Both of them suffered a catastrophic brain injury.
Reading this book by his mother, I can vividly see many of the people at the hospital and can empathize with what the Rife
family experienced, not just because I had similar experiences, but because this is an incredibly interesting, inspirational,
and well-written book, enlivened by Brian's own responses to what he lost and what he experienced as he struggled to find
a place back in the world. I highly recommend it, and especially hope that you would buy a new edition if you can afford to
since the money from the sale of the book goes directly to Brian.

traumatic brain injury. Girded by faith, Ms. Rife lays out the details of Brian's injury, his several close calls, and her
and her son's persistent effort to regain the shattered dreams of a vivid teenager, beset by a severe and long term injury.

This is the third book from Brookes publishing that I have used--the others are Road to the Code and Road to Reading. Like
the others, this book provides primary teachers in grades K - 3 with lessons to use in small group targeted instruction in
the five components. I especailly like this text because of the word lists which make it easy to implement the lessons to
meet the needs of struggling readers. I would highly recommend this book.

Dr Pirnot provides a realistic view into the life of not only a child who was suddenly and tragically injured, but also his
family and friends. She captures the reader's mind and heart and leaves him or her constantly wondering what will happen next.
She also provides a story that is so heart felt that it will make you smile in one chapter and cry in another. This book is
a must read for parents, children, siblings, or others who work with those struggling (or not) to overcome disabilities.

I use this book a lot for ideas for a counseling group that I run in a youth detention facility. The only issue that I have
with it is that there are not a lot of activities other than worksheets. It is really based on a classroom educational model.
That being said it is better than most similar books.

I was deeply involved in the creation of this edition, and I can say from experience that the authors have crafted a masterpiece.
So much work, diligence, research, and love went into this revision. It is a great resource for family members of someone
with Alzheimer's and related disorders, physician's and other practitioners, and even people who have been recently diagnosed.
It can be used to educate someone who knows little about dementia or offer a new perspective to the experienced clinician.
I highly recommend this book!
Enrich your understanding of how the disease affects victim

This is a book caregivers can hand to relatives and friends to read in order to enrich their understanding of how the disease
affects both the victim and their caregiver. It is not only informative in a very practical and easy to read manner but
it is sensitive and to the point about the stages of Alzheimer's Disease and the human needs of the people who face this
illness. The personal stories highlighted are described in ways that aren't merely words on paper written by someone safely
detached from the impact this illness has on living people. This book stands out in my mind for that reason. It also speaks
to the loss of relationships as the illness progresses. I refer to over and over and its one of the first I read after
I realized my husband Tom and I were facing Alzheimer's Disease.

Liz Astor's chronicle of her tenacious approach to understanding the nature of her daughter's autism educates one about the
condition; its vast range, its lack of general understanding and the changing nature of care. It paints a picture of a loving
girl, Olivia, living in her separate world and of a mother determined to reach in to know her daughter and accept her for
who she is. After Liz's disbelief, denial, sadness and sheer hard work accompanied by transformational experiences one understands
the arrival at the sentiment expressed in the title, "Loving Olivia".

This is a touching and thought provoking book written by a strong and wryly humourous mother who has had to learn to live
with, and love, an autistic daughter. Both she and Olivia come over as remarkable characters and I feel everyone with any
connection with autism should read this book which will move you to tears and laughter. Liz Astor narrates a difficult journey
in a straight forward way and leaves you with a little more understanding of the mysterious world of autism.

At last! A book about psychiatric practices that encourages critical thinking. Most media stories uncritically parrot statements
from psychiatric sources without presenting contrary perspectives. Articles in the popular press usually ignore critical
issues. Mental Illness: Opposing Viewpoints helps to correct the one-sided imbalance. Especially recommended for students
considering careers in the mental health field.

Let me get it straight: ordinary reading doesn't work! Nobody can see what this martial-artist is getting at without acting
as he instructed in this book. So I don't want to read this just before I fall asleep, because this book helps me train my
body as well as my mind. I'm not brave enough to act in public as he did in every picture of his book, though. But I might
be able to do this in my room or other quiet places to get rid of the negative past experiences such as PTSD(=Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder), withdrawal, depression, and flashbacks. Certainly, I was so surprised when I started dealing with this book,
because I assumed it would be too hard for the challenged to accept his training based on his martial art experiences;i.e;
aikido. However, now I gradually could tell that he has been trying to help the developmentally challenged retrieve their
self-confidence. That's why I decided to keep doing some exercises pictured in this book.
