I just received a copy of Chameleon Kid - Controlling Meltdown Before He Controls You and am in awe of the entire package! It's a hard covered book with a vibrantly-illustrated cover which is sure to catch the attention of any child...or even adults like me. The cleverly illustrated book takes "meltdown" to a new level of learning. While meltdowns and behavioral outbursts are typically beyond a child's conscious control, this book offers ways for kids to take control of meltdown by "taming the monster."

"Meltdown" is cartoonized into a cartoonish monster. The book gives young people a bookful of ways to use their own power to push this monster away to avoid the unpleasant behaviors that he can create. By making "Meltdown" visual, it helps young people see this character as something to avoid, but beyond that the book offers pages and pages of ways to do this in a fun and colorful almost comic strip book format. Each page of this 41 page high quality book offers one suggestion to avoid "Meltdown." But, on top of that, each page also offers an idiom (which can be tricky for kids on the spectrum to understand) and better defines that idiom. So, there are SO many levels of teaching and entertainment on this book, that I think it will be a favorite book in many families. Each page section also has a cartoonized large pictured child which makes the book real and not just a comic strip.

At the end of the colorful educational and fun ride through this book, Ms. Larson offers a checklist of options that can be used by a child to triumph over "Meltdown." In addition, an activity page offers suggestions of how to deal with meltdown issues that occur and how to think ahead of "Meltdown."

With the beginning of school just around the corner, this is a perfect gift for your family, the new teacher or the school library. It's a unique book tackling issues that haven't been so cleverly handled ever. It's such a gorgeous book, it will be the perfect gift. My feeling is that if you buy one copy, you'll want a second or more to give as gifts. It truly is a great piece of work for children of all ages.

Kudos to Ms Larson!

This book gives a good road map of legal issues facing charter schools in America. It does not go into great detail on any issue, but by it's nature (coverring complex issues which vary from state to state) it cannot.
As a practitioner in the area, I would recommend this book to a person just getting in to the field, or to someone who is just interested in the issues surrounding charter schools.
Often times the media portrays charter schools as being free from regulation, and this book certainly helps to illustrate that nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, if charter schools performed in the manner of many of our urban traditional union run district schools they would be shut down.

Morris, the 'renaisance man' composer, historian, writer, singer, family man and dog lover, has excelled himself with this biography of Chesire. If Guy Gibson was the Liverpool AFC of WWII war bomber pilot biography then this is the Arsenal. Expertly written, his scholarship shines forth on every page, it appears their isn't a source he hasn't exhausted!!!!!! He must have locked himself away for at least 8 and a half years to produce this biographical gem. Let us hope that their is more to come and that lack of time doesn't triumph over his next book.

A great first child's book.

One of the few books I review is in the category ofChildren's literature and after reading this book I am sorry I begin doing the reviews before. Written by 11-year-old Laura Caso this 28-page book is about getting the Chicken pox and how it affected her life.

Laura writes about what happens to her and her brother and sister when they all come down the chicken pox and the story is delightful. Laura also illustrated the book as well. I especially enjoyed the dog's footprints to help guide you through the pages.

I have read this story to both my children several times and they enjoyed, in fact it has become a real bedtime favorite. At 11 and published, that is something to proud of and so is this book...

I think that this would be a great book for me to invest inlater. I am going into inclusive Early Childhood Education. Ihope to get a degree in this field.I love Special Education children. i have a child with special needs myself and find that he is an exceptional child. He has an excellant outlook on life. He has the ability to look at things differently than we do. He looks at things that he can't do and he achieves those goals and reaches to his fullest extent. I think all children can do a lot if you give them the encouragement that they should get especially those that are special needs.

The book is very helpful to me. They speak so nice about 'special child' who actually is a child who needs 'special care' and 'special understanding'. It is the adults (parents and caretakers) who must change their attitudes towards their kids. It also explains many specific features you may find in your kids and sees deeply into their whole human beings. It also recommends alternative ways to take good and special care for those in need.

Cranes For World Peace
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-20
I recommend this book to teachers, librarians and students everywhere. I first read about Sadako Sasaki in the fabulous book "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerr. I am a children and teen librarian and was moved by this young girl's courage and wish for world peace. I wanted to share this story with my "Teen Coffeehouse" group which meets on a regular basis. They too were touched by Sadako's story. We have gotten involved with the folding of 1,000 origami paper cranes and will be sending them to an elementary teacher in Hiroshima. He will be placing our 1,000 cranes under the Sadako Statue in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on August 6, 2000.

The book, "Children of the Paper Crane" by Masamoto Nasu has given us an in depth description on how this statue had come to be the worldwide known place where children from all over the world can visually show their want for peace all over the world.

It is a wonderful heartwarming book!

Great resource on effects and pharmacology of meds for children
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

I actually attended a workshop given by Gadow and found it to be very informative for not only professionals, but lay people as well. I have used the book with teachers and parents to explain the effects of medication (mostly for ADHD) on their children. It also lists the half-lives (how long the meds stay in the system) of many drugs used for ADHD, which is of primary concern to many people. Great research done on the success rates as well.
