In my humble opinion the disconnect between the special education department and the counseling office has widen over the years leaving an information gap at times. This handbook provides both basic and advanced information to the working professional at the high school or any other persons who stuggles with helping students with disabilities.

I do not want to review this book, but I do want to call your attention to the peer review book review that was published in the journal: Archives of Pediatrics in the May journal I believe. Dr. Safer said that this book was unique and belonged on a bookshelf right next to Russell Barkley's book. He said that from a biomedical standpoint it had no equal. The title of the book is Attention Deficit Disorders and Hyperactivity in Children and Adults.

John Oyiborhoro, EdD used to be the director of audiology for the United Cerebral Palsy of New York City, but today in private practice (Boro Audiology Clinic), consultant to the National Institute for People with Disabilities (YAI) and for many years a teacher and author of scientific papers in the field of audiology.
Audiology was born as a result of the Second World War with the rehabilitation of injured soldiers and over time technology has helped to advance the diagnostic and service part of this field, where many people incur many years of disability (one in ten Americans is hearing impaired). This book with nine contributors is divided into two parts (assessment and alternative communication) with ten chapters: overview of disability, cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities, HIV/AIDS, visual impairment, dementia, otitis media, cerumen management, assistive technology, alternative communication and respectful counseling.
The last chapter on respectful cpunseling is very important with several case stories to explain and point out diversity and cultural differences that needs to be taken in consideration, when working with people with a lifelong disability as hearing imparment.
This timely book will be of interest to people working in human development and with people with disabilities, where a focus must be put on the field of hearing impairmnent also in order to faclitate a better quality of care.

Take charge of your family's life!

This is a very handy guide to integrating your child with an autism spectrum disorder into your family and community. It doesn't have an overwhelming amount of information, but just very simply and clearly explains ways that you can make sure your child is happily and productively occupied at home--even if you sometimes want or need to be doing something else besides interacting with him 24/7. The parts about analyzing your day and your house to figure out what your child can be doing, when & where is especially helpful.

For any educator who would hope to understand and properly handle Autistic students' special needs

Review Date: 2008-05-06
There are more children with autism in schools than ever before in the history of American public education. "Autism in Your Classroom" gives educators the practical information and guidance they need to support these children with ASDs, or Autism Spectrum Disorders. "Autism in your Classroom" is a much-needed resource that gives teachers the understanding of the types, causes, characteristics, and treatments of these ASDs. Deftly written by Deborah Fein, Ph. D., a clinical and research neuropsychologist with 35 years of experience and serves as Professor of Psychology at the University of Connecticut; and fellow Ph. D Michelle A. Dunn, an Associate professor of neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine with 25 years of experience. The combined expertise of the two make "Autism in Your Classroom" invaluable to any educator who would hope to understand and properly handle Autistic students' special needs. Also very highly recommended from Woodbine house is "Autism 24/7: A Family Guide To Learning At Home And In The Community" (9781890627539, $19.95) by autism specialist Andy Bondy and speech/language pathologist Lori A. Frost.
