Amazingly powerful little story that will catch you up in the freedom of your childhood imagination -- the freedom of the
imagination of all children everywhere -- as you fly with the rider and horse. The ending will bring a catch to your throat
and cause you to re-examine your attitudes, prejudices and compassion.

"HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! This book contains much valuable information that will lead to greater sensitivity in service delivery
to this neglected group of women. Readers will learn about the wide range of disabilities these women manifest and about the
variety of treatment approaches and health promotion programs that validate positive views of disability while at the same
time encouraging healthy living in this special population."

I work as a psychiatrist in an academic setting, and use this book frequently for teaching purposes and as a reference for
residents and students. I used it extensively for Canadian psych boards preparation. It is especially valuable because it
gives perspective to new research by giving the history of research papers that established for example the use of Lithium
(on which little has been written since the 70s and 80s), it also describes very well psychosocial treatments for a wide variety
of mental illnesses, much more clearly and exhaustively than in the Kaplan and Saddock, for instance. It also reads very well.

The author, a speech language pathologist, has a great deal of experience teaching social skills to students with autism spectrum
disorder (ASD) and other social cognitive deficits. In this book, she has compiled many of the worksheets she has developed
over the years to help break down social skills into understandable formats for these students. The book contains worksheets
suitable for students in elementary, middle, and high school as well as those transitioning to adulthood. It also contains
some worksheets to be used by teachers, parents, and paraprofessionals, to help keep track of student progress. The worksheets
are grouped into the following topic categories: Learning About Our Own Behavior; Self-Monitoring and Rating Sheets; Friendships;
Being Part of a Group; Exploring Language Concepts; Developing Effective Communication; Understanding and Interpreting Emotions;
Perspective Taking; Making Plans to Be with Others; Problem Solving and Dealing with Responsibilities; and Poster Handouts
for Students. The worksheets are meant to be used to supplement teachers' and therapists' lessons, and can be used in conjunction
with the author's other books. Please visit our website to obtain your copy. Our books ship immediately.

I'm on my third read through these stories since receiving it as a gift in the year of it's publication -- 1996. This is,
however, the first time I've read the Kirkus review and I am VERY annoyed by it's condescending tone. I'm reading it again
to find the me I locate when I read her stories. Williams' book is unique, as all great books are, and simultaneously reminds
me in style, tone, manner of address, of certain other writers, eg. Grace Paley, Chekov, Borges, Flannery O'Connor, Saroyan.
. . . The voice of the outsider living among outsiders whose outsiderness unites them (more or less) but excludes the writer
as much as the "normal" (or "normative") world does. The social worker who "meant" to be a writer, the not-quite-well and
healthy person who works with the "officially" handicapped, the atheist with all the impulses of one of the faithful, the
"liberal" acutely attuned to the narrownesses that oppress, including her own narrowness. The griever who cannot stop laughing.
. . . I long for another book from this writer.

This book is beautifully written, very funny at times, very poignant at others. It is mind-expanding and perspective-challenging.
It's hard for me to imagine that it's fiction because it feels so real, so I decided to believe it as nonfiction. It's the
best collection of short stories I've ever read -- it has a wonderful life-affirming quality behind the sometimes sad circumstances
it covers. Highly recommended!!!

This is an informative (and nicely written) look at 19th century American literature in terms of the ways it understands the
ideas of deafness and hearing. The theoretical matrix of DuBois's color line may be less necessary and less useful here than
the social historicist theory Krentz is developing as a base for reading both deaf and non-deaf authors in their negotiations
of the imaginative--and perhaps the real--space of deafness. May be engaging to anyone appreciating American literature and/or
interested in concepts of deafness, as well as to academics in these and related fields.
Seeing the Hearing Line

This is an original and provocative book. Addressing W. E. B. DuBois's concept of "the color line" in the 20th century, Krentz
argues that 19th century American literature grappled with a "hearing line," i.e. a contested boundary between hearingness
(the author's coinage) and deafness. He examines how this hearing line appears in work by deaf authors and also in the canonical
authors of the century. The readings of Melville, Twain, Cooper, and others open new perspectives on their works that should
be of interest to anyone concerned with the construction of American identity. The deaf authors included are contextualized
in their literary and social locations as they articulate a deaf "I" or "we."
Throughout the work, Krentz engages current literary theory on gender, race, class, and colonialism. Deaf American culture intersects with these theories, but also presents challenges to them. The similarities and differences between deaf experience(s) and those of other oppressed groups deserve serious thought by anyone interested in the dynamics of self-definition for oppressed groups. Krentz emphasizes the positive sense of deaf identity and community that emerged in the 19th century, as authors responded to the complexities of American identity at that time.

In searching for a way to work with a child in the autism spectrum, I stumbled on this book, and was immediately drawn to
it, since I have done yoga myself. After reviewing the book online, I tried this with a group of autistic students. They
immediately loved the simplified/adapted movements, poses and breathing exercises.
I would recommend this to a parent/teacher or therapist who is working with autistic children/teens.

the kid in the book. He looks like he is about my age. I think you would like the book. It has a lot of pictures.

be separating or retiring soon should have a copy of this. This goes into much more detail than the info that is put out
in the TAP class.

passion for the strength of the horse beneath him. The freedom one feels when galloping through an open field are felt throughout. The reader is unaware of the boy's handicap until the last page, which promotes another awe for the author and illustrator's ability to keep your attention. Credibility goes to the author, a volunteer for the Central Kentucky Riding for the Handicapped Program, for relaying the awesome feeling when riding a horse, and especially relaying what an incredible gift it is for a handicapped child to feel the ground below him through his equine friend.
