I have been a quadriplegic for almost 30 Years. For over 25 of those years I have worked with newly injured persons. Spinal cord injury does not discriminate, it crosses economic, racial, and geographic boundaries. There is not a quick fix formula for dealing with paralysis. Mr. Holicky expertly demonstrates this in showing how persons from disparate backgrounds successfully navigate the rough waters of sustaining a spinal cord injury. This book puts a real face on what is too often fodder for a movie of the week. It is vital reading for persons with spinal cord injuries, their friends and families, professionals, or anyone who wants to understand the process of moving forward after a traumatic injury. Roll Models showcases how a tragic event need not lead to a tragic life.

I found this book to be valuable and useful not only for people with spinal cord injury, but also for family, friends, and professionals who wish to truly understand the challenges of being paralyzed and using a wheelchair. These personal interviews offer candid information and a variety of useful and creative how-to's from people who have survived spinal cord injury, rehabilitation, and life adjustments. The book will be a valuable resource both for those new to spinal cord injury and those injured for some time. Despite being a professional in the field for over 20 years, I learned a great deal reading this book.

This was my favorite book as a teenager! I read it over and over. The message of living a life of purpose and integrity has stuck with me 15 years later. I am purchasing it to save for my daughter's teenage years because I know how difficult it is to find meaningful fiction for teens.

Well worth the reading!

I read teen novels to keep up with what my teenage daughter is reading and I was very impressed with this one! It is well written, I had no trouble getting involved with the characters, and it dealt with both normal teen issues and some a bit out of the ordinairy(the handicapped). Many novels for teens, Christian and non-Christian, seem like they are just churned out, with little thought for quality. This one was definitely not one of them.My daughter and I both will read more of Nancy Rue's more recent work!

As the title states, this is "A Practitioner's Handbook" and an extremely useful one for the practicing School Psychologist or anyone involved with or interested in furthering their knowledge of School and Clinical Neuropsychology.

Likely one of the best School Neuropsychology resources to surface, I particularly found the Case Studies as well as the practical approach to disorders typically found in the schools (written language, reading, ADHD) useful in my own practice. The chapter entitled Linking Assessment to Intervention is tantamount to today's changing dynamic in the field and gives School Psychologists interested in Neuropsychology a solid conceptualization of appropriate service delivery in which the psychologist can intervene to assess as opposed to simply running everyday psychoeducational reports with figures nobody understands. The authors guide the practitioner to use effective pre-referral intervention programs to offset the tremendous amount of referrals seen in the schools today.

This is a well-researched and thorough handbook that has accomplished all the important groundwork to help guide School Neuropsychology into the future. I highly recommended it as a useful reference for any researchers and clinicians working with children and adolescents.

The author is right on target to assume that kids are interested in making learning easier and more fun. This book includes many specific strategies for building confidence in reading, writing, spelling, math, etc. There is help in organizing time, setting goals, standing up for themselves, coping with testing, etc. This book has reproducible masters to help reinforce learning.

LD Students CAN Help Themselves in School
Helpful Votes: 52 out of 52 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-14
Kids with learning disabilities often feel like failures in school. Their past experiences tell them that they are helpless to find ways to compete and succeed in the classroom. This book gives many practical, helpful suggestions that can turn a student who feels like a loser into a winner! The best thing an LD student can do is become his or her own best advocate. The ideas in this book make that possible. It is easy to read (about a third grade reading level) and organized clearly. Some of the chapters are titled: You CAN Get Organized, You CAN Learn in Different Ways, You CAN Handle Testing, You CAN Get Along with Others, etc. This emphasis on "you CAN" is just what people with learning disabilities need! The authors also include lists of suggestions for becoming a better reader, speller, more organized, etc. If you know someone with a learning disability, do that person and yourself a favor and get this book. Read it together, if possible. Rhoda Cummings and Gary Fisher have written several books about what they call Learning Differences (LD), and this is one of the best!

I am amazed by the this book. I think I'd almost forgot what good writing was! This story about how the Inuits came to know the "sea people" - sea lions is beautifully written and wonderful. I bought this at a budget book store and can't believe it was ever out of print. Just read it, you'll love it!

Excellent little novel

Review Date: 1998-02-11
For children, this is a superb read. Rest assured, though, it gets better with age. As my all-time favorite book, I even bought a special-edition hardcover to pass on to my own little girl. 'The Secret Garden' is a delightful story that can be interpreted on a variety of levels, from a beautiful little story to an intensely moving classic, and each time it is read a new Truth can be derived. I highly recommend 'The Secret Garden' to both children and adults, preferably read from childhood into adulthood.
As an aside, unfortunately the movie version of 'The Secret Garden' is no match for the book. It presents a trite and overacted children's piece that isn't suitable for idiots. I wouldn't subject my child to it.

A literature that the none-literature readers will love.

It's amazing for me to read a book in tree days and want to read it again.I'm a Chinese, but I just can't resist the story line printed on the cover, and I bought a English version.I thought I can read it slowly and prectice my English, but I finished in only three days. Three person who can't love and got together in a great house.Mary,Collin, and Mr.Craven was teached what love is and how to love others by theyselves and by a magical natual-love boy,Dickon. And finally the great house bathed in terror came bake to the arm of the love. I can't write too much about this book. The ending will make you laugh with happiness and make you cry moved by the ending. You really should not only read it,but also own one.

A fascinating book of an academic pioneer and his work

Seeing Language In Sign: The Work Of William C. Stokoe by Jane Maher (Assistant Professor, Basic Education Program, Nassau Community College, Garden City, New York) is an informed and informative examination of the life and ground breaking work of William Stokoe, the man who dared to challenge the commonly held belief that sign language is not a true "language" in and of itself. Stokoe's study and intense research into the beauty, complexity, and linguistic formatives of what would come to be called American Sign Language forever transformed how the linguistic community would view the language of the deaf. A fascinating book of an academic pioneer and his work, Seeing Language In Sign is a highly recommended and invaluable addition to Linguistic Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

Seeing Language in Sign, by Jane Maher, held my attention to the last page. It is a true story about one of the most influencial hearing individuals in Deaf Society. William Stokoe was a true hero in his brilliance, committment and sacrifices to bring the true nature of American Sign Language to light. His story is inspiring and infuriating, as the reader learns of the obsticles placed in Stokoe's way as he strove to prove that ASL is a true language, full of all the richness and bredth of any spoken language. I was moved to tears several times and as I read the last page I wanted to meet this incredible man in person. The author wrote in such a manner that I felt as though I knew him personally. In my opinion, he deserves the Nobel Prize in Education. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who is serious about understanding ASL and Deaf Culture.

Jacob grew up in Harmony, a city populated entirely by blind people. In the previous story (Truesight) Jacob was forced to leave Harmony. Because Jacob can see. After being ostracized by the only family and community he had ever known, and observing firsthand the treachery of the man in charge, Jacob fled to the unknown. Which is where THE SEER picks up.

Jacob wasn't completely prepared for his journey. He is traveling on foot through foreign areas, it's been days since he's eaten or drank anything, and he's heading towards a place he was raised to dislike. Jacob is beginning to doubt the wisdom of leaving Harmony, even if he is a fugitive.

He is "rescued" by Xander. Xander lives alone outside of the city and the painful memories that live there. In a way they are both attempting to escape their pasts. Perhaps that is why Xander is willing to help Jacob, in his own gruff way.

Jacob has a mission. His friend, Delaney, was banished from Harmony by her own father. She traveled the same roads as Jacob, without the benefits of sight. Jacob feels driven to find his friend.

Finding her turns out to be easy. Getting to her? Well, that's another story entirely. Jacob and Xander are going to have to rely on and trust each other, and that's just the beginning.

In addition to being a great, intelligent, futuristic adventure, there are real characters with good stories. And it's just a really interesting concept. To start with, there's a city where being blind is the only way. Even though Jacob didn't fit in there, it's still comforting because it was a place he knew. Add in a girl who should have fit in there, but didn't. A man who can't seem to find any place where he fits. And some people who will try to make everybody fit into what they want them to be.

Sometimes what you think you want isn't really what you want at all.

Research Supported Treatment Interventions
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-08
This 2nd edition of the Severe and Persistent Mental Illness Treatment Planner has been revised to include Evidence Based Treatment (EBT) Objectives and Interventions. The latest research evidence has been integrated into the content of most of the chapters. Those Objectives and Interventions that go beyond "Best Practice" to being based on replicable reseach results are highlighted with an EBT symbol. Now the reader can be assured that all the latest research has been reviewed and suggestions for treatment based on successful results are noted in those chapters where research evidence exists. Where there is not sufficient research evidence available for a presenting problem, best practice interventions continue to be suggested. As federal funding sources as well as some other third party payers are beginning to insist on treatment based on research evidence, this Planner offers just such Interventions.

Please be reminded that all of our psychotherapy suggestions assume a compassionate relationship of empathy that is crucial for effective treatment. Good psychotherapists realize the critical importance of a therapeutic relationship while delivering research informed treatment.

Easy read for families and teachers. He discusses using requesting skills to replace instances of severe behavior. He explains in detail how to get a child to mand for breaks rather than engage in disruptive behavior. However, a person can design a plan to replace the break requests with whatever the child needs to match the behavior function they are seeking (e.g. attention, tangibles, etc.).

Dr. Durand presents an easily understood, yet technically tight, presentation of functional communication training. Dr. Durand provides an excellent demonstration of the applied analysis of behavior and provides a framework for understanding that behavior. This book should be read by anyone and everyone who works with individuals with communiction difficulties who are engaging in troubling behavior.
