I work in the mental health and developmental disabilities field and I've found this book to be extremely helpful in writing treatment plans. In NC, the Local Management Entity approves or disapproves plans for state-funded consumers and all of my plans for individuals with a developmental disability have not only been approved, but highly complimented by the LME as well as fellow professionals. The book explains how to develop a good treatment plan including identification of a problem or need, a definition of the problem, how to development goals, how to construct objectives, and how to create interventions. It also includes Axis I or II diagnoses that might be associated with the presenting problems described. I look through the pages describing the particular problem I am writing about and modify it to personalize the goals and interventions to the individual with whom I am working. I would recommend this book to any professional or paraprofessional who works with people with developmental disabilities. I've had my copy for about three weeks and already the pages are filled with check marks and highlighter!

A Mighty Change is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in Deaf history or, more broadly, the perspectives of early national and antebellum Americans who are generally overlooked in discussions of U.S. history. The anthology contains valuable documents that clearly demonstrate that the Deaf civil rights movement began during the early nineteenth century. Featured is the writing of well known deaf activists such as Laurent Clerc, John Carlin and Edmund Booth. The collection also introduces less (but soon to be) famous deaf activists like John Burnet, whose penetrating analysis of the of the rhetoric used by antebellum educators of deaf children remains instructive for critics of Deaf education today. Krentz's useful chapter introductions and helpful footnotes explain the context of the documents and provide interesting interpretations of the issues the authors debate. Many of the documents in the collection are not easily available to interested readers who should not miss the opportunity to own this fantastic collection!

Let me get it straight: ordinary reading doesn't work! Nobody can see what this martial-artist is getting at without acting as he instructed in this book. So I don't want to read this just before I fall asleep, because this book helps me train my body as well as my mind. I'm not brave enough to act in public as he did in every picture of his book, though. But I might be able to do this in my room or other quiet places to get rid of the negative past experiences such as PTSD(=Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), withdrawal, depression, and flashbacks. Certainly, I was so surprised when I started dealing with this book, because I assumed it would be too hard for the challenged to accept his training based on his martial art experiences;i.e; aikido. However, now I gradually could tell that he has been trying to help the developmentally challenged retrieve their self-confidence. That's why I decided to keep doing some exercises pictured in this book.

" Your book is truly a masterpiece and should be required reading for all education majors as well as in-service teachers and administrators. It is an inspiring and timeless piece of literature and I am pleased to own a copy and honored to know the author."

An Inspiring Teacher's Story

'Miss Teach' is the most inspiring account I have ever read written by a teacher concerning the challenging field of special education. Retired educator Anne Remis describes her experiences and shares her teaching philosophy that during her 29 year career made a positive difference in the lives of students with cerebral palsy. A gentle and intelligent woman with a wonderful sense of humor, she seemed to have a gift for connecting with her students despite extreme communication difficulties faced by many of them. This book would be the perfect gift for any teacher, aspiring teacher or anyone concerned with the needs of handicapped children. The fact that she overcame a long battle with tuberculosis herself may well have given her a special blessing in understanding children with physical weakness. The last time I read a book written by a teacher that inspired me as much was "To Catch An Angel" by Robert Russell, whose blindness didn't stand in the way of him becoming a dedicated teacher. Sometimes we forget how much impact a good teacher can have on individual lives of students and the development of the educational system as well. After reading this lovely book, I suspect that Anne Remis may have been something of an angel to her students and field of special education system in general.

Is your child in a Learning Support Classroom?

If you have a child with any range of learning disabilities this book is a must. We were at a frustration level with our child at home and at school, until we read this book that explained our child completely. It has taught us how to deal with the LS and how to help our child achieve now and in the future. If you have a child in Learning Support please do yourself a favour early and read this book. I only wish we would have read this book 4 years ago when our child was placed in a Learning Support classroom.

It is full of useful information on various forms of verbal and non-verbal disabilities, as well as testing, school procedures, legalities and useful tips!

Too Good a Book to Keep to Yourself
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-29
I am so grateful to have a book to recommend for those struggling with chronic pain as I am. Regardless of what chronic pain or condition one has, appropriate comments, advice, and understanding may be hard to come by. Often, additional wounds may unfortunately come to further our pain, adjustments, and loss from unexpected places such some friends, church members, family and yes, even our doctors.

These devotions are real words from people who have been there. Each one is welcome, soothing hope from honest people. It has been my best "medicine" yet. Mosaic Moments reminds us we do not need to be perfect and we don't suffer alone. One may never know all the answers to their questions. However, this book helps the reader know that God is still in control, He will never give up on us, and there is purpose somewhere in our pain. I keep this one near my favorite chair and fully expect it to become well worn. Mosaic Moments should be in every doctor's waiting room. I give it 5 stars!

Before reading this book, I knew that we should let CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) children be children. I have always been curious about CODA's point of view. I did learn few things and was surprised by couple of things. Thanks, Paul, for satisfying my curiosity.

Excellent, informative and unbiased.

As another native signer, I was quite pleased with Preston's book for it's well-roundedness. Preston does not seem to have a particular agenda he is trying to extoll. The variety of voices in this book show that people perceive similar circumstances differently. A much needed book!

Jacqui Jackson is a single mother with seven children, four of whom are autistic.this is not a sob story about the difficulties she faces but one which shows people that living with autistic spectrum disorders is all about embracing the positive. Through reading the book she shows the strength she has had dealing with autism in the family.

she writes with great humour to give a refreshing and insightful view of autism whilst providing great tip sections on adolescence, holidays, sibling rivalry and all other factors involved in family life and in particular a family with autistic children.

the book deals with the issues surrounding autism, asperger syndrome and AD/HD.

this book is great for parents, siblings, professionals carers and gives a real insight into autism instead of spouting off facts and figures.

After all the parent is the professional on their child at the end of the day. for anybody with a large family this is a must read, and for everybody else it is too!!! it is a modern parenting book for the 21st century!

SUPER DUPER!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish, i wasnt able to put it down! I especially like Jacqui's anecdotes about the 'girls' relationship with the 'boys' in their family, as the girls seem so charming and delightful, whereas the boys often sound like little terrors! Far from complaining about this however, jacqui takes real life situations which may sometimes be the absolute opposite of comical, and changes them into hysterical tales. an altogether fascinating book!

Review Date: 2007-08-05
Stay-at-home mother Wallis A. Simpson presents My Andrew: Day-to-Day Living with a Child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, her day-by-day journal of raising two sons, Andrew and Jesse. Jesse is an ordinary child, but Andrew is a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (specifically, a high-functioning form of the disorder known as Asperger Syndrome). The entries span from Andrew's infancy to his entrance in the second grade (and Jesse's entrance in fifth grade). Simpson occasionally provides her hindsight comments in brackets to add perspective to the verbatim original journal entries. My Andrew evolves as a heartfelt portrayal of learning to adjust to raising an ASD child, and sharing one's hard-earned wisdom with the child's teachers or other caretakers. An up-close and personal viewpoint, especially recommended as a supplementary resource for anyone responsible for or working with a child with ASD or Asperger Syndrome.
