What Love is All About

A touching story that will stay with you for many years to come. It demonstrates in a prose that is poetry how true love means perseverance in the gift of self to the other, neither measuring how much nor counting how often.

Small but mighty

The poetic resonance of Marie Harris'words will linger with you long after you have finished this remarkable memoir only 77 pages in length. This is a little book with a big story to tell and it is told in a MASTERFUL way. This book has more punch and breadth to it than a work five times its size. The author, the Poet Laureate of New Hampshire, uses her skill as a poet to pluck out the most powerful and essential elements of the story about her adopted son, Manny, a 14 year old Puerto Rican teenager. This bittersweet (often humorous) bite of reality will transport you to both physical addresses and emotional places....accomplished with the minimalistic artisty of a very talented wordsmith. And, OH, the words on those pages! Is it prose? Yes! Is it poetry? Yes! Is it music? It sings! Is it a schmaltzy, run-of-the-mill melodramatic, "Hallmark commercial"-type book?... NO! NEVER! (no puppies or children die...just a few unnamed chickens) It's a love story which is never precious or sappy/ sentimental. This book deserves to be widely distributed and read.

Marie Harris's book took my heart. I can relate to Manny through my own adopted daughter who is now 10 and has been living with us only 15 months. Love is not always the whole answer but children like Manny and my daughter change the world around them for the better. I have read many books on adopting the older child but Marie's presentation is so beautiful her story will appeal on many levels.

Perfect first resource for parents of ADHD children

In this thin volume, Mary Fowler has managed to capture the information that parents of children newly diagnosed with ADHD want and need to know. (It also makes a great review of the basics for more seasoned parents). The questions cover social issues, home and family problems, and strategies for schools. I'm sure that many parents will turn first to Chapter 13: "What parenting practices work best?" Fowler gives specific suggestions along with lots of reassurance. "20 Questions" is brief and to the point, and yet wonderfully informative--the perfect first resource for parents wary of being overwhelmed by too much information. This book is also a good one to give to family friends or relatives you wish knew more about ADHD, but who probably wouldn't sit down with a 300-page reference. I keep several copies on hand to give to the anxious parents of all my new patients.

Wong really goes in depth in simple language and crucial research that involves Learning Disability. She really writes so that everyone who have never heard of LD can understand. She goes through different aspects of LD. It's a recommended book for those who have no idea what learning disability is and to those who are professional in the schools. A true 5 star.

Craig and Andrea Jehn Kennedy have produced the first encyclopedic reference book for people with disabilities. The information alone on available resources and how to access them is invaluable. Their enthusiasm is evident and contagious and they succeed in convincing readers that anything is indeed possible. But it is much more than that. This is a life-changing book for everyone. It challenges concepts of what a disabled person is and can or cannot do. It is humbling, surprising and exciting.Craig and Andrea and the extraordinary persons they interviewed have dug deep to bare their souls and let us share what it takes to face and overcome adversity and every day reach the peak of personal achievement. This is a must have book for all those able-bodied people young and old,[ASIN:059329314 The G-Connection: Harness Gravity and Reverse Aging (paperback)] who find it hard to stay active and motivated. It's a guide to getting out there and enjoying life!

I'm lucky....I don't have any physical disabilites other than those most of us 55 year olds have. So why did I read this book? It caught my attention...and now I want to say it's a 'must read' for those with or without disabilities. It is extremely insightful, with tons of useful information for those with physical limitations to reference as they strive to get out and about. It is an uplifting and encouraging read--the individuals' stories are quite intriguing---and, true!

Congratulations to Craig and Andrea Kennedy for their successful endeavors to open many doors to the out-of-doors which had previously seemed closed to the physically limited. I'm looking forward to their future books.

The most comprehensive guide for travelers with disabilities I've seen!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-05
This book is excellent - stunning amount of detail, from specific locations of accessible bathrooms around Florence (and details about them) to dimensions of hotel rooms to accessibility of museums, restaurants, transportation... Quite comprehensive and readable, and it includes some resource information for other parts of Italy. I would suggest supplementing with a non-disability-specific guidebook, like Lonely Planet. My only improvement would be to reorganize a bit - for example, the attractions and restaurants are grouped by area of the city, but hotel descriptions are grouped by price. But that's pretty nitpicky - Ms. Danielson has obviously gone to a lot of effort and gathered information that will make my trip to Florence much more enjoyable. I wish there were similar books for other cities!

Ms. Danielson's book is an invaluable resource to the traveler with special needs. Florence is a challenging city to navigate with a wheelchair, and there is so much to see, that the book will provide a wonderful resource to help you plan your trip.

It was an interesting book. Something I could see being a critical read for any IT management integrating accessability in to their workplace.
Provides some great real world examples of how companies have successfully integrated accessability technology into their environment, and provides insight in to the application of a variety of products to address a range of user needs.

I found this book in the university library to give me some better ideas to help me with the at risk and mental handicapp students I work with as an intern PE teacher. This book has helped me out greatly come up with some great ideas and activities to use in place of the typical gym lessons.
This is a book that I highly recommend as a reference when working with special needs students. It gives a very good base for sports through different kinds of activities, as well as helping writing lesson plans out.

Great book!!!

Could Helen Keller Use Your Library?
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-09
Adaptive Technology for the Internet: Making Electronic Resources Accessible to All is a resource for libraries attempting to make web material available to the entire community, published by the American Library Association. After an introduction to basic web design, the book discusses specific methods for improving accessibility. It provides software and hardware solutions for a variety of visual and auditory impairments and descriptions of how the products function and interact with each other and considerations for their use. For example when talking about Braille displays, the author says that they are very expensive and gives a brief description of display features and what librarians need to consider if they are acquiring this technology. Pictures, charts and drawings illustrate products and clarify topics.

The chapter on funding adaptive technology contains advice on how to present your plan as well as finding the right funder. Another chapter is about training library staff that has, among other things, tips for assisting persons with disabilities.

This book is full of very specific information . On page 39 you can get system requirements for a public access computer and learn why it's a good idea to have a high quality graphics card for a computer that will primarily be used for visually impaired patrons.

Appendixes contain helpful websites, vendor, manufacturer and consultant contact information and special libraries with adaptive technology programs. At the back of the book is a glossary, a bibliography of reading resources and an eight page index.

A "must" for all academic & community library collections

Review Date: 2000-02-03
A library's principle mission is to make its resources available to the entire community, including those with disabilities. Recent court decisions affirm that libraries must proactively and deliberately plan for accessability of their electronic resources as well. Adaptive Technology For The Internet: Making Electronic Resources Accessible To All is a handbook that will show librarians how to carry out this mandate imposed upon them by the Americans With Disabilities Act and covers such electronic technologies as screen readers, Braille screens, voice recognition systems, hearing assistance devices, and HTML coding for accessability. The pay off for all this effort and adaptation is the opening up of the library to a new and appreciative community of patrons.
