I had the honor of serving in the same Platoon in Iraq with this fine Soldier. The one thing that I will never ever forget is the way he never, no matter what the circumstance had a negative thing to say about anybody or anything. His religious convictions and utter faith in God was an inspiration to everyone who had the honor to serve with him. He fails to mention in here on the same night of the innocent mans death in March 04' he was sent to guide a HMMV carrying two wounded soldiers through the dark night and dangerous Baghdad Streets alone to the Green Zone to guide this lost HMMV to safety, undoubtedly saving their lives. I love the man you are SGT. C. BANDITS!!!

Kortney's story is a compelling and fascinating read on its own. He exhibits honesty not only to his challenges but as to his successes and failures. One is left with a profound admiration for his life and lessons learned on a path that no one would voluntarily chose.

What really made the book "pop" for me was the brilliant contextual writing that Bill Briggs wraps around Kortney's story. From the political turmoil of small town Mississippi, to often sobering ironic timing of Kortney's rehab with the politics of this war, to the history of the Para Olympics, to the intricacies of mechanical knees and legs, all add immensely to the reading experience.

This book was absolutely wonderful. I work with mothers of children with birth defects and I had had a few mothers who had recently lost their children. I ordered several of these books and mailed them to these mothers. This book spoke to them and helped them cope with their loss. They really appreciated this book and the message it held for them.

I read this book when I was in 4th or 5th grade. The story of Robin Rogers has stuck with me for 35 years. While I have forgotten the details, I remember the essential message. All children are gifts from God, especially the ones that aren't everyone's idea of perfect.

This book is wonderful. It so beautifully written from the POV of little Robin giving an account to God of her brief life on earth. If there is a disabled child that has touched your life, you need to read this book. Dale Evans Rogers has written a masterpiece which will benefit the lives of many. Thank goodness God sent Robin into their lives!

My Aunt gave me this book to read when I was in grade school. I am now 42 years old and I still remember this book as being one of the most profound stories I have ever read. I have recommended this book often, I have never forgotten it.
Such a touching reminder for all of us that life is divine and should never be taken for granted.

Until I real Dale Evans' account of her daughter's life, I didn't realize anyone felt the way I do. We lost our 2 1/2 year old daughter this year. She had "special needs," some similar to those of Robin in the book. We always felt that God gave us our daughter and she was our own angel here on earth. This book is a wonderful story of the love between a family, their God, and their special angel. I highly recommend it to any parent or family who have lost a child with a disability.

Autism: Heartfelt Thoughts from Mothers is a beautiful compilation of personal stories from mothers of children with autism. The stories contain words of wisdom, details of challenges that each mother has faced, ways they feel that they have been blessed, and resources that they found useful during their journey. Readers will gain insight into the world of Autism, as experienced first-hand by moms from around the world. There are stories in this book that will make you laugh and cry...there is something for everyone. The raw human emotion is a refreshing alternative to the drab textbook versions of what parents might expect during their child's lifespan. Individuality, uniqueness and compassion prevail in this book that proves that one size does NOT fit all. As I neared the end of the book, I arrived at a page dedicated to Ryan Long, who unexpectedly passed away. I was overcome with emotion while reading the words penned by his mother on the first anniversary of his passing. As the parent of a child with autism, it is a life changing moment when you realize that you're not alone, and that there are others out there who dream, laugh, grieve, and cry...just like you do. The reader is let into the personal world of Autism as these mother's share their struggles, joys, challenges, etc. Anyone wanting to dig deeper than the scientific definition of Autism should purchase this book! This book touched my heart, made me cry, relate and feel a closeness to the moms and their amazing children!

Review Date: 2007-12-20
Autism Heroes provides an intimate glimpse into the world of a ever-growing sector of the human population that cuts across social, economic, and cultural boundaries in a mysterious manner. The personal anecdotes presented by caregivers living and loving in the complex world of an autistic family member are sometimes heart rending, sometimes hilarious, and always enthralling, compelling, and sobering. It is incongruous that our technologically-advanced, information-savvy society has such little understanding of people with autism. In our present atmosphere of privacy, it is yet another act of heroism for these families to share this most personal and sensitive part of their lives. Dr. Firestone's work will touch hearts and open eyes to the beautiful spirit found in people with autism and the ones who love them. Her positive but honest and balanced outlook will help parents with newly diagnosed children get a foot-hold on the future possibilities and the breadth of the autistic spectrum. For veteran families, seeing their daily efforts recognized and honored will lighten their work. For professionals, it will provide insight into the kaleidoscope of consequences the diagnosis can have depending on the family context. To understand and address the unique needs of families struggling with autism is a great challenge, and this book is a respectful, heartwarming, and sensitive step toward that goal.

Better Than Heroes - Just Good People

Review Date: 2008-01-09
Being a good person far exceeds being a hero. I have said for many years that I would rather be deprived of the Beatles and be bombarded with painful loud noises than be a hero. To me, "hero" suggests looking for grandeur and acting on behalf of others with the thought of return. Often heroes lose their lives. To me, "hero" is far from an appealing concept. September 11, 2001 soured me on "heroism" all the more because I didn't like the way stepping up to the plate for others was viewed as the exception and not the rule and the way many appeared to expect kudos for doing so. Real benevolence seeks no return.

The families portrayed in this wonderful book are better than heroes - they are good people who have allowed their lives and those of their children with autism to be shared. Readers are treated to beautiful photographs and anecdotes and interviews from the families featured in this book.

Autism is an equal opportunity neurobiological condition that makes no distinction in who is affected. In our ever-dwindling quest for privacy in today's highly connected world, it is all the more courageous and generous for people to share their life stories of coping with autism in any form.

Dr. Firestone's book is a book for everybody regardless of placement or lack thereof on the autism/Asperger's spectrum. Experiences are validated; autism is accepted and unconditional love underscores the personal accounts each of these families have provided. John Lennon's 1971 magnum opus "Imagine" and his classic classic "Gimme Some Truth," also from Imagine would be the ideal soundtrack to this book.

This is the ideal companion book to SOULS: BENEATH & BEYOND AUTISM (paperback version) and Different Like Me: My Book of Autism Heroes.

A Scientific Trial of One
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-01
This is a must-have for your autism library. The book begins with a brief history of modern medicine and then defines what separates science from fad and anecdote. Other reviewers here have discussed the way this book debunks modern fads and pseudoscience so I will focus on two other areas that really impressed me.

First, the editors concisely describe how to go about determining whether or not a treatment suggested for your child is based in science or not. After reading Controversial Therapies, I now have red flags that go up when someone suggests chelation or brush therapy or other therapies based in anecdote. Also I learned to expect specific goals from therapies and not the vague improvements usually promised.

Second, the authors debunk many fad treatments for developmental disorders, but doesn't discount all of them. Instead, the authors teach the reader how to set up a scientific trial of one for your child based on facts. For instance, if your occupational therapist prescribes brush therapy to help overcome a certain behavior, you must define the behavior, measure the behavior without brushing, then measure it with brushing. In my son's case, like the case given in the book, my son's violent behaviors increased after brushing. I have since performed a trial on the effect of small doses of caffeine on his self-stimulatory behaviors (it helped).

This book is an important work in developmental disability literature and I highly recommend it. I also wish you strength, laughter, and success on the way to recovery for your loved one with a disability.

A review of Controversial therapies for developmental disabilities

Review Date: 2008-06-15
Controversial therapies for developmental disabilities is an excellent book that describes a variety of approaches for the treatment of children and adults with developmental disabilities. There are 28 chapters that point out inconsistencies amongst therapies that claim to be effective for treating autism and other disabilities. This book points out in detail the difference between what is pseudoscience and what is science by pointing out important information about therapies such as sensory integration, facilitated communication, and other ineffective treatments. Many of the therapies described in this book are advertised as fun, loving, caring, and able to create relationships between care givers and children, which sounds appealing to parents. These therapies are not science-based rather they are based on intuition, and personal values and opinions. Take sensory integration for example, which lacks evidence that its effective for children with autism or for people with developmental disabilities, however some parents and professionals provide this treatment to individuals based off of claims that are made from other people and from the therapists that used this so called treatment.
Because of such claims uninformed parents spend a lot of time and money on therapies that have not yet been proven to be effective. This book can help such parents avoid potential dangerous treatments for their children. It's unfortunate that there aren't any laws that prohibit the use of treatments that have not been proven to be effective for the treatment of developmental disabilities. I think that it's unethical to provide such "treatments" and this book advocates for people with developmental disabilities about the truth of bogus therapies.
The book also discussed why applied behavior analysis is an effective treatment compared to the other treatments described. It would have been great if the authors provided more information about the evidence for its efficacy in comparison to other methods. Nevertheless, this is an informative book for educators, parents, students and professionals. I enjoyed this book because I have new ways to articulate many of the fads described and provide rationales why it's not an effective treatment for people with disabilities.

A Must Read for All Behavior Analysts

Controversial Therapies exposes the ugly, inconvenient truth about sensory integration, auditory integration training, facilitated communication, positive behavior support, and a host of other fads and bogus treatments. Jacobson, Foxx, and Mulick have complied a set of chapters, and written many themselves, that provides all the ammunition that anyone needs to shoot down these wasteful and chronic malignancies that pervade the field of developmental disabilities and especially autism.

I use this text in my ethics course along with Ethics for Behavior Analysts (Bailey & Burch) and find that the combination makes for a great foundation for logical and responsible thinking about important treatment issues in our field.

The Down Syndrome Nutrition Handbook is an outstanding resource for people with Down syndrome throughout their life span. It contains excellent information and practical suggestions for people with Down syndrome and their families. A wide variety of topics are addressed from general nutrition to nutritional intervention for diabetes mellitus, celiac disease and other health issues.

The book is well written, person-centered, and health-centered. It is beneficial when read cover-to-cover as well as when saved for use as a reference book. In addition to the writing style, the pictures make it a valuable education tool for people with a wide variety of reading abilities.

I highly recommend this book for people with Down syndrome, their families and anyone who wants to help them with their nutritional goals.

Don't let the long (boring) name fool you, it is a GREAT book! As our daughter is getting older (she is 16,) she is taking control of her diet. I can't be with her all the time, so I have to teach her to eat healthy. This might sound simple, but it isn't. Well meaning relatives offer her foods she shouldn't eat, and others don't know that she has some 'nutritional issues,' like Celiac Disease. Our daughter has to know what she can and can't eat, as well as portion control. The DSNH not only has information for me as a parent, but it has worksheets and teaching activities for our daughter to help her learn healthy eating habits and good fitness activities. Did I say that it is a GREAT book? We copy off the worksheets and post them on the fridge, so our daughter can track what she eats during the day to make sure that she has 'hit' at the necessary food groups and water intake goals. She even has her fitness goals for the week.

The book covers nutritional information and needs from birth through adulthood. Section three is the one that we are working on right now: Teaching Healthy Choices to Encourage Healthy Lifestyles. It has everything from menu planning, to cooking and fitness. It's full of readable and understandable information for me and hands on learning for our daughter. That is a great combination if you ask me!

Our daughter will be the one in control of her own cooking, fitness activities and health in a few years. This book will help me help her to make a smoother transition to become a more independent and healthy adult with Down Syndrome.

I was saddened to read about Christines struggle and eventual death of cystic fibrosis. This book does a great job of showing you the decline, and we watch as her lungs deteriorate until there is no quality of life left. It was awful because she loved life so much and knew what was happening to her and what she was missing out on.
Some of the dialogue was a little tedious in the recreations so I would have done wothout some of that-but Christines beauty and strength really shined through.

I have read the story and was brought to tears - but with so much laughter - Chris had something people try and get in their whole entire lives. Jackie I have somewhat of an understanding in having a child that is ill from a very young age. Chris is an insperation to parents and children. My son has had chronic asthma since he was four yrs old - and then 6 months ago he was diagnosed with a tumor on his spine the size of an orange. He went through surgery - all is well. The terror you must have felt - doing the hospital thing for years - I look up to you and your daughter - your book was very inspiring - makes the "I feel sorry for myself" feelings go away

I have read this book so many times that I had to buy a second copy-I now own the hardcover and softcover editions! I felt a 'kinship' with Christine from the very first page---we shared the same first name, was born around the same time, loved the same music and I was very familiar with the places Jacquie Gordon wrote about in this wonderful book. For anyone who grew up in the seventies this book will ring a familiar bell. You read of struggles, illness, but most of all you learn that Christine LIVED! Christine rung every ounce she could out of life and she certainly grasped the brass ring! She is a true inspiration to us all! This book brought a richness to my life and I thank Mrs. Gordon for sharing such a wonderful tribute. Christine (in her stardust) must still be singing!

I first read this book when I was in 5th grade and fell in love with it the first time I read it. Since then, I have read this book several times and it is one of my favorite books because there is so much one can learn from the lives of the people in the book, especially from Christine, a girl who has cystic fibrosis. What makes me read it time after time and keeps my attention is the strength and courage of one family and especially Christine. It is so encouraging when you can read someone's story like the one in Give Me one Wish and know that she was able to keep such a positive attitude and not let her illness "get the best of her". The lessons that can be learned from this book will stay with you for the rest of your life and so will the impact of this book. The person that wrote the book was Christine's mom and the story she tells from the journal entries of Christine's to evoking the emotions that Christine had are amazing. This is both an incredibly inspiring book and an incredibly sad book. It makes me cry every time I read it. All I can say is, incredible.

I can't even begin to describe what an impact this book has had on me. I read it for the first time in 6th grade, and since then my entire frame of mind has changed. I've found that I really love things like Monty Python, 80s punk rock, the Muppets, and so much more. So it (this book) has changed me a lot in that way, but it also is such an inspiration because of the fact that Christine never really let her cystic fibrosis pull her down into the dumps. She had "spunk and a spirit" for life, and that in itself is something to admire. In the dozens of times that I've read my copy of this incredible story, I've laughed, I've cried, and I've felt like I can actually identify with Chris...she was a regular girl who just happened to have a fatal disease. Her mom (Jaquie Gordon, the author) caputured Chris's life in such an amazing way, and I wish I could thank her for being so willing to write about it and changing my outlook on life.

The former First Lady's book is a very compassionate effort which can help a person who has to deal with mental illness for the first time no matter what the setting. Mrs. Carter gives a good over-view of the "whole picture" concerning all mental illness with enough detail to give the reader a good foundation in the subject. I think the really profound thing that I read in every line of the book was the real sincerity that Mrs. Carter has for her work. She really is serious about changing the way some in society look at individuals with mental illesses. I applaud her for her work and her book.

This was one book I did not hesitate to buy as I know so many people with the mental illnesses.

I must applaud Rosalyn Carter one of the former First Ladies for her help in understanding Mental Illness and for trying her utmost not to see it as a stigma in this twenty first century......but for us to learn that getting help is the priority here.

An excellent resource for family members and friends who wish to help a person with mental illness. I especially appreciated the book's emphasis on biological *and* social risk factors for various forms of mental illness.

The section on building resiliancy in children at risk for mental illness is reason alone to purchase this book. It is a wise, compassionate, humane treatus on a very important topic.

Excellent Rosalynn Knows Everything About Mental Illness

Rosalynn Carter's book tells it just the way it is and how you can treat the mental illnesses' the way they should be. Reading her book you cannot miss having the right treatment. I myself also believe a lot of the treatment comes from support of the family and guidance that is a must ,a mentally ill person whom does not have that benefit will become a difficult road to travel.

Mrs. Carter started her journey many years ago and never tired of it, she is a true believer that if you want to get well you can never stop searching for the answer of which she never did.

Understanding the illness is the first battle. When I seen Rosalynn on the Larry King Live Show and she had introduced her new book, just by listening to her speak I knew she gave a lot of her years on research, she is very sincere.

Thank you Mrs. Rosalynn Carter, as I have someone in my family with the illness and you could not explain it any better than you did in your book " Helping Someone With Mental Illness ".

A first book for the reader uninformed about mental illness.

Rosalynn Carter's new book evokes compassion from the reader as she unfolds her personal experience of becoming aware of persons with mental illness. This affliction has many facets and is painful for the family as well as the patient. Carter leads the reader through various types of mental illness, noting symptoms. The reader may use the book as a reference and not a 'read for pleasure' book.

Carter writes simply and without exaggerating, so she is easy to read and to understand. With the resources listed in index "D", she equips the uninformed reader to bring understanding in his interaction with his/her co-workers and friends. This is especially important as mentally ill patients need support of those around them. They also need the same financial help that patients with surgical and medical problems receive.

I wept when I read it. So many lines about Jesse fit perfectly with my sons' situation, too. Thanks!

It is a children's book, but many adults could benefit from reading it also.

In Jesse's Shoes is a story told from the perspective of the older sister, Allie. Allie loves her brother Jesse very much, but struggles with having a brother that is just "wired differently," as her parents told her. She has the responsibility of walking her brother to his school bus each morning. Jesse did not always cooperate and easily got sidetracked. Allie saw other kids snickering and laughing at the way her brother Jesse acted.

Allie loved her brother but just wanted him to be more "normal" around her friends. One day after school she blurted out to her Dad that she just did not understand Jesse, and her Dad responded by saying, "Of course you don't understand him, you have not walked in his shoes."

The next day when Allie met Jesse after school, Jesse bent down took his shoes off and told Allie to walk in his shoes. That is exactly what Allie did, all the way home.

Having the chance to view things as Jesse did, Allie found the courage to stick up for her brother to her friends.

I highly recommend this book. It is a children's book, but many adults could benefit from reading it also. In fact after I received it in the mail, my 13-year-old plopped on the couch and read the book all the way through. I asked him what he thought of the book, and he said, "Mom, this is the best book I have read in awhile."

The illustrations are beautiful and the book will leave a lump in your throat. Sometimes we just don't understand until we walk in another person's shoes.

A book for any age.

This book will touch your spirit at any age and remind you of the value of difference. If you are young it will tell you how to respect others that are not the same and teach you how they fit in your world. If you are old it will tell you how others need space when you are different because they fear where they are going. Read it at any age and you will grow.

I heard about this book on Dr Laura, which she read in it's entirety on her show. I ordered it Monday and received it Thursday from Amazon. My niece is a first grade teacher and intends to read it to her class. It's short and to the point and one story I will read to my grandchildren (if I ever have any. (that's a hint to my son))

This story is timeless. It is told in a way only Lewis can tell, and has such a powerful message for our children - and for us.

In a fast paced world where nobody has time for "different," these children learn that sometimes different is good, and can bless you beyond your dreams.

As a mother of 4 children all under 12, I plan on reading In Jesse's Shoes to my children again and again. And I plan on spending some time talking to them about kindness, compassion, and acceptance. About walking in someone elses shoes before you judge or mock them.

Sometimes the BEST surprises come in the most unlikely packages. Like finding a great book in a brown box at the post office, or discovering love and compassion in a brother with special needs.

WOW - What a book, co-authored by Dale Brown and Richard Bolles, the world known author of What Color is Your Parachute. Dale and Richard have developed a book full of concepts, how to and methods for empowering those of us with disabilities to want to seek out employment against the roadblocks that confront the normal job search.

The book is a MUST READ! A "must read" for even people who are currently employed; as it will give you the insight of what a person with a disability will go thru during their job search. Any temporary able bodied person may become disabled at any time in their employed life. Your "employment life" will be altered forever; thru no fault of your own doing.

No one chapter stands out. Each chapter carries its' own weight for the total read of this outstanding document.

I wish the authors great success with an excellent and easy to read reference book and a solid companion to WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE!

The authors have broken down yet another barrier!

A Wonderful Book

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Written by Dale Susan Brown and Richard Nelson Bolles(Author of What Color is Your Parachute), it is a simple and concise guide to finding a job if you have a disability. It pulls no punches and tells it the way it is.
It gives simple, concise advice on how to conduct a job search, and what to do in an interview. It tells you how keep a prospective employer from getting nervous about your disability, and how to communicate in an interview in an honest and positive way.
If you are person with a disability this is a terrific book, if you have a co-worker with a disability, it is a terrific book, if you have people working for you with disabilities it is a terrific book, and if you are a "normal" person (whatever that is...} it is a terrific book.
The advice in the book leverages the expertise of both authors and is sound and easy to understand. It also helps you to do a better job, once you have employment. The book is highly recommended for everyone!

During my own job hunt, I was constantly frustrated by comments made by family and friends. They had assumed that I could receive special preference just because I have a disability.

I have known that my reality is much different; employers do not have to hire me for a job which my disability prevents me from performing the essential functions, and I am responsible for getting myself to the office.

These critical legal distinctions had made my finding a job very difficult inspite of having a dynamic resume and job recomendations which other people must work their whole lives to obtain. I was placed in the unenviable sittuation of having to turn down job offers while classmates with much lower GPAs and far less reccomendations quickly were being placed.

This book is a great resource and affirmation. Job hunting is hard enough as it is, but being a person with a disabilty adds one more challenge to the mix. This book is beneficial for people with disabilities and their friends of all perspectives, but I feel that prospective college graduates and their families should especially read it.

This book was one of two I purchased to help me gain some perspective in how to represent individuals who had various disabilities but wanted to work if they were able. As a job placement counselor, it is my job to help the clients see what they CAN do and teach them ways to accomodate themselves and communicate their needs effectively to employers. This book helped me understand ways to do this so that clients of mine not only attained employment, but also retained that employment for a long time. This book is a great one and I encourage anyone who is disabled, or knows people who are and need your support, to read this. Keep an open mind and try out the ideas presented. I think you will find it gives some great advice!
