Cant say I agree with it all but its refreshing to see a doctor with an open mind prepared to look beyond conventional drugs.

The book will give you very good details of digestive problems
and make you think more about your own health.

Very worth a read if you suffer from and stomach related issues.

But also dont miss Elain Gotchells Breaking the Vicious Cycle if
you have a serious problem with IBD or Chrones

I actually had the privlige of meeting Dr.Tooshi when his diet clinc was located in Bayonne NJ. Dr.Tooshi is a kind man and helped me to lose 30lbs with his diet plan and recipes. I recently was frantically searching for those recipes and I couldn't find them. I was upset cause the diet worked for me. Dr. Tooshis clinc was long gone. I was browsing on the web and keyed in Dr. Tooshi just to see what happened and to my surprise i found him and his recipes in a book. I am truly overjoyed. Now i will have those recipes forever. I purchased the book almost 3 weeks ago and have lost 25 pounds so far. It's easy and I feel great. Dr. Tooshi's motivation and support will have long lasting effects for me. The recipes are quick and easy, too.

I purchased this book looking for a great reference on high fiber foods. What a mistake. This is basically a diet book which consists of a diet that you barely eat on and then some information on excersise and what vitamins to take.

No where were there any listing on fiber content even in the recipes which were really just low calorie. There is barely a mention throughout the entire book about the benefits of fiber.

If you want to read all about the digestive process, digestive system diseases, tests, and cures, this book is for you. If, on the other hand, you'd like to know how to improve your digestion, try something else. I was extremely disappointed when I received my copy of "The Good Digestion Guide" and have returned it.

A "must-read" for anyone concerned with keeping his or her GI tract in optimum shape

Review Date: 2005-12-10
The Good Digestion Guide: A Complete Handbook to Gastrointestinal Happiness is a digestive health that focuses upon the entire GI tract, the many illnesses that can plague it (most individuals suffering from a GI illness have at least one other GI problem), and what lay readers need to know to promote optimum GI health. Chapters discuss GI flora and the danger of food poisoning, common GI symptoms of mild or serious problems, how to reduce the risk of cancer, concerns such as heartburn and Inflammatory Bowel Disease/Syndrome, natural therapies, a journey all the way through the GI tract, and much more. A welcome addition to personal health libraries and a "must-read" for anyone concerned with keeping his or her GI tract in optimum shape.

I hadn't been feeling that well lately-stomach pains, bloating and the embarrassing problems that accompany that, and a loss of appetite-and like many, when it comes to these kinds of pains I was thinking the worst. I was looking for materials on "plumbing" issues, to put it politely, when I noticed, and then purchased this book.

What surprised me was learning the number of things, some minor, some not, which can cause gastrointestinal disorders and really make one feel miserable. (It turns out my problem was an infection, which Fillon mentions, and is easily treated with antibiotics.)

If you're looking for a book which dispels myths and wives' tales, is written in a way that you don't need a PhD in pharmacology to understand, is well researched and easy to reference, than I heartily recommend this book.

I keep the book in my nightstand, although, since it is handy as a "plumbing" book it might make good sense to leave a copy in the "reading room" as well.

Difficult to read, lacking in physiology

I bought this book for my 2nd year GI module and was quickly disappointed. I like my course books to give in depth physiology and pathology sections that are easier and quicker to read than robbins. This book did neither. All black and white, very difficult to read and does not keep interest up (not that any GI book can, but this one was especially dull). Physiology chapters went into great detail in basic subjects such as enteric nerve function and intracellular signaling pathways, but was severely lacking in the more broad and important GI physiology concepts. As far as the pathology sections, I actually prefer reading robbins which says a lot as to how dull this book is. I suggest Lange GI Physiology for the physiology and just using robbins for the pathology. Do not purchase this book for the purpose of first or second year medical study.

In the 10 or so years since Jensen wrote this compendum of classic anal discomfitia, many new diseases have been discovered. And as is common in a rapidly advancing and revising field, many symptoms have been found to be duplicates or triplicates of the same disorder.

That is not to say this volume is entirely irrelevant. Though effective in its time, the world of anal diseases is constantly expanding. Books like this need be published annually to keep with the groundbreaking research being done in this feild. Furthermore, new advances in techonology have given a new face to anal diseases. New photographic advances have aided immensely in the discovery of this hidden and mysterious world. Photographs, however unappealing to the layman, would be of immeasurable use in clinical diagnosis.

Jensen's work is largely autobiographical, culled from his years as a gastrointestinal researcher. But it surely should be updated for current clinical use.

Have skimmed over this guide and it seems to have most of the essentials needed for the rotating resident/med student on a GI service. The approach to specific symptoms (part I) was very well done and has a lot of helpful information. The approach to specific diseases section (part II) was decent but I must say the section on small bowel disorders was extremely sparse and needs to be expanded. For example the author cites many things on the differential dx for small bowel malabsorbtion, but only celiac disease and short bowel syndrome are explained and these only in minimal depth. Would hope 2nd edition will add to this section.

information to help you solve your digestive problems

I found the book very helpful. I don't think there are easy answers to digestive problems because there are so many factors affecting each person at once. The author shows you how to keep a food journal (which my doctor has been telling me to do for years) which not only has columns for what you ate or drank, but also what else you were doing, who was with you, where you were and how you were feeling, because your digestive problems can be a combination of what you eat, how stressed out you are, how rushed you are, etc. I found a lot of useful information in the book, but it still comes down to the fact that you have to make the effort to find your personal digestive problems and solutions.

A decent self-help book

It is great to find a book by a practicing gastroenterologist who promotes a medicine-free healing plan! Gitnick's book reminds us all of the importance of a complete healing program, including exercise, stress reduction, positive attitude, eating those foods which don't bother us, and seeking support from others. The author discusses scenarios when it may be necessary to combine medicine with these success factors and how they can work together to promote healing. This book contains many case studies and patient anecdotes, and is written in a positive, uplifting way. The book may draw criticism in that is does not dictate specific solutions or provide explicit answers; instead, it gives the reader information and tools (like a suggested food journal) which the reader can use to answer their own questions.

Well intentioned but regrettably lacking in any real practical advise for those of us who suffer from this very dibilatating syndrome, "Freedom from Digestive Distress : Medicine-Free Relief from Heartburn, Gas, Bloating, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome" was a disappointing read. There is virtually no information on dealing with the embarrassing and often painful situations that are a part of our daily lives. I was looking for answers and got very few: What is the best approach for avoiding problems in a crowded movie theatre after a Mexican dinner? How does one excuse oneself from a staff meeting without arousing suspicions? What is the best way to avoid blame for unpleasant odors in an elevator or a car? How do I explain to my children that "Mommy's gas is involuntary"? How will they learn that passing wind at the dinner table is NOT a joke? These questions are left unanswered, and the reader is left feeling bloated.

The worst of the series. 200 cases are listed but many are repeats from earlier in the book. The questions seem random and are not always related to the case presented. Images are suboptimal, for example many of the CT images are coronal without axial images provided. What do you think you are more likely to see on boards, coronal or axial images? You are much better using Mayo Clinic GI imaging review.

not as good as others from the series

This book is well written but doesn't have enough good quality pictures and is too brief in some important topics.

It's one of those books you can feel the author is really trying to teach you something and not just write some stuff. But it doesn't have enough pictures / schemes and a lot of the CT and MR images are old, poor quality and sometimes not representative. The book is one of the shortest of the requisites series and sometimes doesn't cover enough aspects of some particular topics. There's not a word about specific collateral vessels in portal hypertension.

I have had a great experience with the Mayo Clinic Gastrointestinal Imaging Review book which I would recommend instead.

i think this book would serve as a good intro, but there is not enough detail regarding specific imaging characteristics of common things -- I am less interested in knowing about phytobezoars (though they are fun for the whole family!) than about MRI appearance of FNH. i need more meat. well, i'm off to lunch.

Helpful if you're newly diagnosed

For me, this book was way too basic. I have had GERD for a few years and have had a lot of discussions with doctors, gastroenterologists, etc. about how to manage it. I have tried all the lifestyle and diet modifications with little success, and hoped to find out about some natural alternatives to improve my stomach health. Unfortunately, this book had very little to offer for someone like me. It focused on the diet and lifestyle modifications, then spent only a page on what to try if those things don't work. The simplistic "You don't have to live with acid reflux if you just eat right and change your lifestyle" message really bothered me, because for some of us it just isn't true. And for those of us who need more, the book didn't help at all.

I still rated it 2 stars because if you're newly diagnosed with GERD/acid reflux or if you think you might have it, this book would be a great introduction to the lifestyle and diet changes that do help many people. Don't expect much - the acid reflux section is short. But if you're just looking for the basics, slightly more than you get from a typical doctor's office pamphlet, this book may help you.
