I purchased this book at the suggestion of my husband. My mother recently had a serious illness and was hosiptalized for three days. This book would have helped me recognize her symptoms earlier and we might have averted an ER and Hospital stay all together.
The information in this book is simple and easy to understand. The break-down of information is done very well and I find it extremely informative.

I finally understand after reading this how all the organs in my digestive system work. And it's not as gross as you might think. It's interesting to read how different foods and drugs you ingest each affect each organ differently, as well as potentially causing pain to those who are sensitive, or who have different conditions. A must read for those with persistent IBS, heartburn, gas, or other digestive issues.

Great book for GERD sufferers

This book has it all; concise explanations of the etiology of each gastroenterologic problem and simple practical solutions. Generally, the doctor proposes a high fiber, low fat diet but each patient has to tailor their diet to their own specific needs as clearly there are certain foods that are fine for some, an irritant for others. I would note that contrary to one reviewer, I have made a number of the recipes. They are fairly simple, mostly typical ingredients and have been delicious.
The one problem I have with the book is the contradictory advice with respect to some specific food items. For example, if you suspect that your LES valve muscle is the culprit, the recipes in the 2 week plan contain a good deal of ingredients (citrus fruits, cocoa) which may irritate that condition. The doctor has not provided alternatives to substitute for these ingredients. Generally though, I think the implied message is you have got to get to know your body well as you lower the fat and increase the fiber in your diet.

Informative; not bogged down with technical language

If you could purchase one book on GI issues, this should be it. My copy is filled with notes and highights and I have recommended it to many of my friends. I found the technical jargon to be quite easy to comprehend (yes, I know I am also a Dr., but trust me -- we appreciate the simplified lanauge as well). The author also integrates a nutritional aspect, although some of the info can be quite contradictory (check out the cooking section...). Overall, I LOVE this book and I have brought it on many a Dr's visit. Its quite impressive.

This book was a lifesaver

I suffered for a year before this book came to my rescue. Once I started having stabbing pains after I ate, a friend let me borrow her copy to seek some relief. After an endoscopy and a trip to the emergency room with excrutiating pain, I finally consulted the book and learned that my problem may go further than acid reflux. At my second trip to the ER I insisted on having my gallbladder tested. The ER doctor was not interested in going that direction, but he placated me and let me have an ultrasound. That revealed that I had an enlarged gallbladder and gallstones. I had surgery the next day to remove the gallbladder. Had I not read the book and become informed, there is no telling how much longer I would have had to suffer (the ER docs were content with medicating me and sending me home and not trying to figure out what was wrong). It helps to educate yourself when you know something is not right with your body, because doctors do not know everything. I had seen two doctors previously, and neither had an inkling that my gallbladder might have been my problem. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has digestive problems.

Review Date: 2004-02-03
This book is very useful for a wide constituency of physicians
and patients . It is helpful for gastrointestinal, neurologic
and rhematological problems. The author treats the nutritional
dimension of our health. For instance, milk may harm ulcers
and exacerbate other problems in the GI tract. Spicy foods may
aggravate inflammations. The author explains that the small
intestine digests proteins and splits amino acids and enzymes.
The digestive system interacts with the circulatory system.
Nutrients travel to the liver which secretes bile and removes
toxins from injested foods. With the exception of fats, all
nutrients enter the bloodstream via the liver. Undigested
fiber evacuates. White bread, chocolate and pastas clog the
digestive system. Spasms aggravate existing digestive disorders.
These spasms may take the form of abdomenal discomfort,
IBS, Crohns Disease and diverticulosis. Pancreatitis is a
steady increase in abdomenal discomfort aggravated by alcohol.

Sandostatin treats pancreatitis. Certain foods contain gluten.
The gluten can aggravate existing gastrointestinal conditions.
Eliminating wheat, rye and sweets helps to alleviate symptoms.
Stress is an aggravating factor with regard to the GI tract.
An increase in fiber helps the tract operate better. In addition,
the GI tract needs micronutrients and vitamins to aid in
the digestive process. This book is excellent as a health
maintenance tool.

My daughter just started the specific carbohydrate diet and we had been brainstorming on different, yet appetizing foods to work with, especially in the dessert department. When I purchased this book and experimented with the recipes we were both extremely happy with the end results. The recipes make it easy to create mouth watering, delicious and creative meals! I had used several of the recipes for Thanksgiving and family members were intrigued and I will say, very surprised, that the taste of the food was "normal"; which I think is a major misconception with this diet. Instead of focusing on the "cannot haves" we focus on the "can haves"! Thank you so much for making the transition into SCD land easier! :)

This diet is the only way to control my chronic diarrhea.

Healing Foods is a helpful adjunct for a specific carbohydrate diet recipe collection. The photography is especially appealing. I would suggest that the author make a few changes to a possible next edition; a) include a "what to order in a restaurant" section, b) find a more successful bread recipe to accommodate sandwiches (those in the book are either too sweet, or break apart and can't be used as sliced bread, and c)proof the text more carefully as there are some errors. Finally, and important, would be a section listing sources for internet or phone orders for hard to find, organic, and vitamin orders. In summary, buy this book, as it's worth the money.

This is a great book!

I am sort of collecting SCD books now! I have really been enjoying this book. There are many great, well-thought out, tested, recipes. There are comments and how-to's with recipes, which I appreciate. The recipes do not call for the dried curd cottage cheese which is impossible to obtain in Northern California--so I am appreciating that. There is a website mentioned in the book which I have checked out--it is just getting going it seems.
Oh, there are also beautiful pictures in this book. This book is really worth the price--I highly recommend it.

I bought this book after seeing a list created by its writer, Dr. Minocha, and reading some reviews. It lives up to its description very well. My entire family has GI issues and/or diseases, so I'm pretty well read on both medical and alternative treatments, and this book covers the 'natural' remedies comprehensively. You are given sufficient information to use a remedy, and enough to give you the knowledge to pursue additional information if desired. And most importantly, in my opinion, in many cases Dr. Minocha explains WHY these conditions can exist and why these remedies should work.

I wish we had tried a few of these remedies we didn't know about before my husband had his entire colon removed. I am still going through this book and know it will have a special place on my medical books shelves. I plan to buy a copy for our (wonderful!) GI doctor.

I'm a full-time health writer, and after 15 years in the business I've rarely come across a book that so perfectly combines medical findings with practical, easy-to-follow advice. Dr. Minocha is clearly an advocate of alternative styles of medicine, yet he approaches his topic with the eye of a scientist. When I want to know what something does, how it works, how to use it myself--the answers are here. This book rarely leaves my desk, and I expect I'll keep using it as a reference for years to come.

Natural Stomach Care - Book Review

Review Date: 2004-02-11
Digestive ailments, especially chronic conditions, are troublesome to millions of Americans. Without proper care and treatment, such ailments often reoccur and may persist for years. Dependence on prescription drugs for long periods of time can be difficult for many patients. An alternative to prescribed drugs for treating ailments of the stomach has been the application of "natural remedies." The "natural" alternative to traditional medicine has for centuries proven to be an effective cure for many stomach and digestive ailments. The use of "natural remedies" often eliminates for the user the need for drugs and possibly surgery. Dr. Anil Minocha, in his book, Natural Stomach Care introduces to the reader a wide range of easy-to-follow and effective therapies. Both the medical doctor and the layman will find useful the health information discussed in Natural Stomach Care.

It is surprising to learn just how many folk remedies are available to the interested person. Most of these remedies have been utilized around the world for hundreds if not thousands of years. All the material in this comprehensive discussion of the subject has been presented in a well organized and easy to follow format. The author first wants us to have an understanding as to how the body functions including the digestive process of food, the importance of restful sleep, proper daily nutrition, the reduction of stress in our lives as well as other factors which, when taken together, all contribute to a health life style. The author uses his many years of practice and research as a gastroenterologist to highlight the many factors that contribute to the wellness of the human body. Dr. Minocha corrects misconceptions that many people have held for years about the proper care and feeding of the stomach. In addition, he suggests many useful "natural remedies" for such ailments as inflammatory bowel disease, gastric ulcers, intestinal gas, constipation and other common digestive disorders. In another chapter he introduces detoxification techniques which, when applied, clean the gut of all impurities. A process that uses "probiotics" in which helpful microorganisms are introduced and help to keep the digestive process "in balance." Throughout the book the author provides helpful information on his subject, describing in detail each problem and how to either treat the ailment or the preventive measures necessary to prevent it from occurring.

Natural Stomach Care is highly recommended for people who are experiencing problems with their stomach or digestive system and are interested in learning about and applying "natural remedies" as an effective treatment for such ailments. Persons who are presently free of digestive and stomach problems will also benefit by learning natural preventive measures that when applied, should keep the stomach and digestive system properly working throughout a lifetime. Natural Stomach Care is a worthwhile addition to all consumer health collections in health sciences libraries and as a consumer book for public libraries.

This book is essential in particularly for Gastroenterology residents, much better if they deal with science. As a gastroenterology resident, I found this book very important for my clinical growth, it may be contradicting when somebody speaks about clinics and is reading about pathology, but this is essential for knowing better how is everything functioning! Specially if you need to expand your current knowledge.
The book is highly illustrated, with amazing images, the text is clear and understandable, and the literature is updated. Thank You Cecilia M. Fenoglio-Preiser for this newest edition!!

This book is well written about the GI tract pathology. Although I am a gastroenterologist practicing in Japan, this book helps me understanding the mechanism of the diseases. The latest edition of Dame Sheila Sherlock's text on diseases of the liver is a welcome addition to the books available for those treating patients in the clinic. The text is easy to read and well organized. It is easy to find subjects of interest in the index and that cannot be said for every text in print currently.
The book offers clear and consistent handling of issues concerning patient care. This proves very valuable in daily practice. ... the book is a more than reasonable memorial to Dame Sheila Sherlock's work. Although, some might not find the text sufficiently encyclopedic there are other texts for that purpose. I combine Schiff's two-volume set with this when I feel a need to seek that kind of overview.

Although there are several other books more advanced and comprehensive, this is an essential primer to the subject of Hepatology. It's approach is simple, yet reasonably comprehensive and the illustrations are superlative. This is a book every aspiring hepatologist should own.

If you need to read this book as a patient or significant other, do not despair excessively. It is written by and for specialists in the field, but with the aid of a medical dictionary and a sypathetic physician or nurse, you will be able to understand quite a great deal. This helps in demystifying the diseases contained within, giving you at least a foundation of vocabulary and watchsigns. It may help in discussions with your physician if you have a desire for very detailed information. The book also contains extremely extensive references. In the field, it seems to be the best there is. Although the vocabulary and jargon may confuse a bit, use your medical dictionary (essential), and realize that there are not many absolutes in this field. Each patient is an individual, not a statistic. Do not become depressed or anxious about the information--it can seem a little overwhelming and only presents a very clinical, hard look at liver disease. The text only contains the best of Western medicine and does not even remotely cover alternative therapies available to a patient. My advice is to have this as a Western medical reference and outlook. But remember that there is usually another way--search for other answers from alternative practitioners--accupuncture, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, herbs and herbalists, medical intuitives, healing books and tapes, etc. Most Western doctors at this point often dismiss these alternatives, but they themselves may be able to offer little to help the patient depending on the disease. Think of yourself (the patient) as the center of the medical team--surround yourself with the best you can--people, therapies, positive thinking, etc. Never loose hope or give up. This field is advancing daily, so this book may be out of date by the time you read it and you will have to talk to your physician for the latest information. Most physicians will be happy that their patients are well-informed about their condition and should be happy to discuss any questions you have related to your condition--indeed this is their job.

I think this is a wonderful books and I really like the openminded approach of the author regarding a happy medium between holistic treatments and conventional ones. I do have to disagree with the other reviewer though because I do believe that this book could be easily read by the layperson. I also like that the Dr. explores the realm of oral health and the mind-body connection in diagnosing and treating GI problems. These are oft neglected areas that need to be adressed.
