This is a great book and a must have if you want to know the truth about what you are feeding your kids! We can't always provide our kids with the finest foods, especially when traveling or in other people homes, so this book provides valuable information to help you make wise decisions for your kids..Pick it up.. you will be glad you did!! It's also a great gift for a new mom too!!

This covers a ton of comparisons, and gives you great substitutions. Instead of being frustrated about what to REALLY eat, this gives you reasonable substitutions so that you can eat a much healthier meal and your kids can too. It's amazing how you can get tricked by the titles of food combos and make some really bad choices. Really a must for every parent and or grandparent who are responsible for feeding young (and not so young) children meals while on the go.

I bought both books-one for adults and one for kids. Now, my 10 and 7 yr old grandsons ask if what they're eating is on the "eat this" side before they order. Such a simple idea, layed out in a colorful format. I'm very happy with both books and have recommended them to all my friends and family members.

Great illustrations, easy concepts to understand.Great every day trade offs for everyday foods. (Including restaurant foods we all eat to fast food and fancier places) This is something that anyone can reap the rewards from reading. If you thought you knew it all, you may read this and think again.

This is a decent book, very similar to the first one. Even if you own the first book, this is a good buy because you're getting additional information on foods and restaurants, NOT a repeat of them. However, I was disappointed by it being called "For Kids," because my own 10-year-old will NOT eat most of the restaurant suggestions. I would like to see something that's TRULY kid-friendly (for the finicky eater!). Drop the "for kids" label, and it would be worthy of more stars.

This North American edition of Montignac's method is of a much lower quality to the European english edition. There are fewer recipes. The recipes included involve special items such as powdered milk - is this a food item for a so-called food lover?!

Thank you Michel!

I have been on every diet out there and recently came to my senses to go back to eating the Montignac way and lose weight easily!

1. He doesn't restrict portions
--> I have grave issues with portion restrictions and having someone tell me how much I can and can't eat usually causes me to overeat, because I'm not the one in control anymore. With Montignac, I am presented with the possibility to eat until I am satisfied (but not bursting at the seems) - I get to decide when enough is enough and really listen to my body.

2. Satisfy all your cravings: sweet, salty, crunchy, bitter
--> No taste bud that is left alone. I have an appetiser, an entree and a dessert at lunch and at dinner. My palate is perfectly satisfied and I feel far from deprived!

3. Carbohydrates are allowed
--> I don't know about the rest of you who have tried Atkins and South Beach, but suffice to say that my bowel did not appreciate the lack of carbohydrates. Here my body happily accepts the right kind of carbohydrates, keeping both my mood swings (when in lack of carbohydrates) and body more than just content.

4. Eat to live
--> Montignac stresses that food should be enjoyed, savouring every last ounce, not devoured in 10 minutes in between meetings. Sit down and appreciate the gourmet and luxurious tastes that are offered to you.

5. Not as expensive as it may seem
--> Yes, Montignac does offers recipes that include rabbit and other French inspired dishes, but you need not purchase rabbit to follow this diet-substitutions can be made easily. The diet is made of basic things that every supermarket has in stock: lean beef, eggs, cheese, skim milk, oats, apples, pears, green salad, tomatos, zucchini, cucumber. The only thing you may need to hunt for is the wholegrain bread, but even that is sold in the UK at Tescos! Here in the US you can find them at more European/Organic supermarkets like Trader Joe's, Whole foods, Aldi.

I would recommend this book to everyone looking to lose those lbs. It's the most enjoyable food journey you'll ever go on and will make you look as terrific as you feel after a few weeks following Montignac's culinary recommendations.

I've read both this book, and the South Beach diet. I believe that both books complete each other. South Beach mentions "GI" (Glycemic index), but doesn't really get much into it. This one explains it in detail, and also explains eating habits in different ways too.

While Phase 1 in this book isn't as drastic as Phase 1 in South Beach diet, it is a longer phase. I feel more comfortable with the end phase here because the chances of falling back into bad old habits are less if you take this seriously. Great read, the only down side with this diet is that there isn't as much of a following, or help on the internet as South Beach or Atkins does.

If the only recipe in the book was for the Pizza Pan Meat Lovers' Pizza, it would be worth the price! I love Meat Lovers Pizza and this tastes like the real thing with a LOT less fat and calories!! I can even have TWO good size pieces without feeling guilty about it! Yes, it takes some time to make, but I solved that by spending an afternoon making up several batches of the ingrediants (for the pizza and other items in the book), tossed them in the freezer and then the next several pizzas were quick and easy to throw together to pop in the oven. I've found many of the recipes were easy to make ahead of time and freeze for later, though items that are breaded were not as tasty after being squished in my food saver. Those that required two breadings were easy to adapt though by only breading once, freezing and adding the second breading on just before I baked the items.
For deserts, I've found her "Most Decadent Diet Ever" to be my favorite...The chocolate cake is to die for!!

My wife and I have were already fans of Devin Alexander's work - we had purchased the Biggest Loser cookbook about a year ago. In trying to eat better, I still have cravings for "cheat days." The recipes in Fast Food Fix totally fit the bill when I want something similar to Taco Bell or a serious burger - but they cut out a ton of fat and calories and taste JUST AS GOOD. Anyone out west who is an In 'N Out addict like me will seriously love her recipe for a Double-Double.

I absolutely love this cookbook, I use it most weekends when I'm craving fast food after a long week at work. The recipes are fabulous and really do taste like the fast food you would eat in Mc Donalds, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen etc. The only difference is that the recipes in this cookbook all are a lower in calories and fat than the original fast food ones. Plus they are all easy to make. I have all of Devin Alexander's cookbooks and I'd have to say that this would be my joint favourite cookbook along with Devin's The Most Decadent Diet ever.
Highly recommended.

It really is GREAT! The cookbook came yesterday and I've made the In and Out Burger: Double Double with onion on page 24 and the Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino Blended Coffee on page 208. BOTH are dead ringers for the real thing! I quit eating fast food two years ago, with the exception of the occaisional Subway, and to tell the truth I sometimes miss it. This is the perfect answer for me! Those hamburgers were EXCELLENT! Only problem...I ate two of them! I can't wait to try more!

I was given this book a couple of years ago by the therapist seeing my prior to having gastric bypass surgery. I was shocked and so pleased to finally see what I had known all along. That diets succeed only in making us fatter. That I was not a failure because I could not loose a hundred some pounds on this diet or that. Here was the tool I needed. Along with this book and some therapy I learned the emotional pain behind why I ate. I had never tapped into that before. Two years later I have not had the surgery. I did get married. I learned to love and accept myself. That's more important than a flat stomach. Please, if you've struggled with a real weight problems, read this book and find a compassionate therapist.

I had already been using some of the principles of the Weigh Down Workshop but found it a bit judgmental. This book helped me learn to care for myself properly and not be so critical. As a result, I lost 60 pounds and took it back off after a pregnancy. I'm pregnant again and not worried about shedding the baby weight. I really appreciate a wholistic approach to this issue!

I had bought this book years ago but didn't remember reading it so I read it. I've been a dieter for about 25 years and always end up in the same place...heavier than before and more unahappy with myself. After reading just the first couple of chapters, I felt like a heavy weight (no pun intended!) was lifted from me. I've been "demand eating" for about a week now and I can't believe what a difference this has made in my life. One of the biggest changes I've noticed is just in my overall attitude about life. I've been nicer to people and more positive in general because I don't have this constant negative self-talk going on in my head anymore. The next biggest thing I noticed was that food and the scale have lost all power over me. I don't feel anxious anymore when I eat because I have learned to eat when I am truly hungry. If you are truly ready to change your life, read this book!

I have read this book in 2001 and have not dieted ever since. The desire to diet has never returned, but I used to be pretty enthralled with it. After reading the book, and doing what I learned, I did indeed find my natural body size, which is 8. This book has taught me to accept myself and care for myself in a way that has not only improved my body image but also my overall self-confidence and self-esteem. I learned to address the real issue of why I was overeating (which is taught in the book). I have found that the key to success is to internalize the instructions given and to WHOLE-HEARTEDLY apply them in my life.

I found out how to stop the binge/diet cycle and live like a normal person, finally. The program is so simple and logical that I knew from the start that my life was going to change forever. I would urge binge eaters/compulsive overeaters to give this method a try. It just might be the ticket for you as it was for me.

I was very excited to read this book, but unfortunately it didn't say anything that I hadn't already read online.

Whilst I agree that grains are for birds and not for people, the book was sometimes repetitive and I had to force myself through parts of it at times. I am sure the author is a great help to her patients, I just didn't feel the information was as groundbreaking as books such as The China Study which chronicle a lifetime of research or Eat To Live by Joel Fuhrman which gives a complete and drastic diet plan than has equally drastic results on sick patients.

Dropping grains and replacing them with hamburgers, oil, honey and meat based dishes is not a path to health especially as allergies are often caused by a candida overgrowth and intestinal flora damage which is just as sensitive to sugars and fats as gluten and wheat.

Smith also annoyed me by telling vegetarians that if they don't feel better straight away they should switch back to fish and chicken - in reality vegetarians simply need to stop eating sweets and grain products and switch to a whole food, plant based diet which provides all the fiber, protein and nutrients that they need.

She also urges vegetarians to load up on soy based products which is another huge allergen. If you have so many allergens in your diet - how will you know what's causing your problems?

Fish is so full of mercury it should be an occasional meal, not a staple. Chicken has just as much cholesterol as beef. Heart disease, not protein deficiency or celiac disease is the leading cause of death in the USA

Bottom line is plants need to be the staple whether you eat meat or not to provide the fiber required to aid digestion especially if you drop all grains.

My recommendation is for people who are truly committed to finding healthful eating to perhaps read Eat To Live instead, which has both meat eating and vegetarian menu options but it is a much clearer way to 'revitalize your health' than simply removing grains.

Smith isn't wrong about the grains, and I do feel bad writing a less than perfect review but I just didn't think the book was the most interesting or informative one I have found.

Drs. Ornish, McDougal or Bernard, they have THOUSANDS of patients whom they have saved their lives and continue to do so through diet.

A Wonderful Introduction to Grain Free Living

The virtue of whole grains is the latest conventional wisdom from the food industry. In reality whole grains are not as wonderful as they seem. All gains and seeds contain a certain amount of phytic acid and it is concentrated in the bran. The phytic acid binds with the minerals in your food and conveys them out of your system.

Brown rice, for example, contains vastly more minerals than white rice when analyzed in a lab. But your body will actually absorb more minerals from the white rice. Now you could always soak and sprout your brown rice before cooking and the majority of the phytic acid would be neutralized leaving you with lots of usable minerals. But few are willing to go to such lengths.

Nutrition is much more complex than people think. My educated intuition tells me that the best bet is to eat primarily as our ancestors did in the thousands of generations during which man evolved. And they ate no grains to speak of, neither brown nor white nor whole nor processed.

Going Against the Grain is an excellent introduction to this important subject. It is a little bit dated and aimed towards the general public. But if it serves to pique your interest in the subject it has done it's job.

Not very scientific

I found this book to be somewhat vague and non-scientific. It's all stuff I've read before. The 'quizzes' to determine how sensitive you are to wheat or grains are too broad. There is some good info on tests and glutens, but the part about 'exorphins' is just plain silliness. Save your time and money, here's a summary: (i) avoid grains, esp wheat (ii) go organic where possible (iii) it's hard and people might think you're weird but go for it.

Ho-hum. An MTV book in that it is full of quick sound bites that have been said better in other books. Perused a used copy that I paid a buck for and frankly, it didn't compare with anything that geneen roth wrote or the book, "Diet's Don't Work." If you actually read and want inspiration AND lasting insights into your eating habits so you don't have to continually follow rules, buy Roth -- she goes deep, cares about the long haul with her people.

This is great little book for people like me who don't want to commit to reading a 200-page diet book full of psychobabble about childhood issues, emotional problems, and dysfunctional relationships. This book is practical and easy to read. The chapters are small, and the text is arranged in a list fashion. It offers lots of common sense advice and gives great tools for paying attention to your eating, all of which I have found to be very helpful. It offers excercises at the end of each chapter as well. I haven't done those because that's not my thing. This is a great book for practical-minded people.

I'm 52 years old and can't imagine ever again devoting an entire year of discipline to losing so much weight. I refuse to get all casual about this perfect body/health achievement now. But how will I think about what and how I eat for the rest of my life without obsession and drama? Et voila, I found this wonderful book on Amazon. Do not be fooled by its simplicity. It is dense with wisdom. I now live without obsession or hysteria about my weight. Do the exercises for as long as it takes to make the Secrets second nature and you too will write a thank you to these wonderful authors.

He is down to earth and is an enjoyable author. I bet you won't be able to put this one down, and even if you're not interested in Low Carb, the story of his journey alone is well worth the price of admission. This book will get more than one read this year on my nightstand.

It may interest people who have absolutly no knowledge about weight loss and low-carbs. I found it to be extremely basic and boring.
After an attempt to read this book, I coninuted by scanning. There was nothing new, helpful or informative. I found the author to be a bit too self-important.
Save you money and look for something interesting and with some depth.

Jimmy Moore's personal journey - from morbid obesity to Livin' La Vida Low Carb - is an evangelical accompaniment to Good Calories, Bad Calories and Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, New and Revised Edition , Atkins Complete - Fast, Easy & Healthy (Deluxe English Edition). There's a lot of "Praise the Lord!" in his life and his book - it's The Way to weigh less for chubby Christians.

As he says, this is His take on Livin' La Vida Low-Carb. It is not a "one size fits all" way of living, and he encourages the reader to modify it to what works for you.

As for this reader/reviewer/low carber: I did *not* give up caffeine, nicotine, or the occasional light beer (methinks that's Jimmy's Bible Belt talkin' there) nor commit myself to obsessive excessive exercise, and it works for me!

You can't just read it - you actually have to do all the journaling exercises and actually work the program, but if you do that this book will work for you. I highly recommend joining the online program in conjunction with the book. This is not a diet, but a program that deals with the emotional aspect of overeating and binge eating.

[[ASIN:0470275375 Shrink Yourself: Break Free from Emotional Eating Forever]I'm currently reading this book and i am reading it very slowly, allowing his statements to digest! the author is an MD psychiatrist and bases a lot of the examples on his patients, i'm sure. i've read many diet and emotional eating books, but this one is one of the better ones out there. the words relate to overeating, but these principles could apply to other disorders (bad relationships, substance abuse, procrastination).

because of his vast experience with actual cases, Gould hits it at the points where you can relate. i've been to a therapist for some other issues, and whenever she'd ask me "why do you feel/do/need this?" and i honestly couldn't answer her for the longest time. Gould's book is helpful in that he provides a concise list of what could be bugging you underneath causing you to overeat.

i'm in ch. 5, and already i have lost 3 pounds. you don't have to go thru a lengthy process (as in Martha Beck's book or Judith Beck's book) to start succeeding.

I've had this book sitting on my nightstand for quite some time. I've started it, then got busy, so I had to start again, and on and on. After being at my highest weight EVER and having three weeks of bingeing on sweets, I finally sat down and decided to read it. I only wish I'd read it when I got it.

I've read and heard others say this, but after starting the parts where the real work begins my cravings stopped. I literally stopped craving sweets. I thought it was a gimmick when people mentioned that, how could I ever NOT crave sweets? For the past three weeks I could think about nothing but donuts, Milk Duds, chocolate everything, pie, etc. and would go out of my way to get them. Today I thought some sweets would be yummy, but I couldn't even tempt myself to eat some chocolate that was right in front of me. It was like a switch had been flipped and I saw food as nourishment and not a comforting friend.

I highly recommend reading this. If you're on the road to being obese like I am, this could literally save your life.

THIS IS THE ONE!

ANYONE WHO HAS EVER STRUGGLED, WHO HAS FIFTY MILLION DIET BOOKS ON THEIR BOOKSHELF - LOOK NO FURTHER..this book is the one!!! I have 21 diet books, have read them all, tried them all...but this one struck a chord somehow. It explained things in a way that I haven't found before..both my girlfriend and I are reading it and we have already found drastic improvements in the first week. We no longer binge, we stop - we realise no "goal" we make in regards to our weight can control our desire to eat. We have learnt to not lose weight for our husbands, for a dress size, for a weight on the scales - we are no longer thinking of a number to attain - we are just so excited to have found a solution that we can work with. The book is TREMENDOUS - we are in Australia and will be ordering more copies. THANK YOU ROGER!!!!! YOU ARE A GENIUS - THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE THERAPISTS SECRETS - you have saved us heaps of money and lots of emotional pain. Kind regards from two aussie gals happy and well on our way!!

I noticed that the lower reviews came from persons who felt that the book didn't cover specifics on what to do to loose the weight. What I felt the author is offering is the "tool" to help you recognize WHY you're overweight and the steps you can take to correct the WHY, which is emotional eating. Now everyone's emotional reasons are different, hence it would be a very lengthy book to read, and it would be too general if "tools" where given. When reading the summary version of this book I was shaking my head in amazed agreement of how relevant and on-point the book was for me. I agreed with the material presented and recognized that if put into practice, I can begin to turn my current situation around emotionally, physically and spiritually. When I purchase the book I will come back to amend my rating.

I completed phase I and half of phase II. At the end of Phase I, I lost 12lbs as opposed to the 8-9lbs that Dr. Ian says you will lose. I guess because I worked out almost everyday. It isn't hard to do, you just have to plan out your meals ahead of time. Unfortunately being a sorority girl and in college, I found myself being pressured to do keg stands, play flip-cup, and do beer bongs. So that's where my failure was, and then once I got wasted I found myself eating 3 tacos from Taco Bell. The next day I felt disgusting and guilty for letting myself down and didn't complete the program. I gained it all back. Every time I try and start again, I just quit after the first two days. I find that it was easier to do this program in the warmer months since there was more fresh fruit and veggies. Every time I've failed it's been a cold month (up North), so now that it's warming up again I think it will be easier since there will be a lot more produce for me. I encourage everyone to try it though!

I LOVE this diet!!

*I just recently had a baby and need to lose about 50 lbs, this is my first diet.*

I read most of the reviews on here before I purchased this and I was impressed with the results others had. I already lost 7 lbs during Phase I (just 9 days) and I feel better already. I also exercise with Tae Bo DVDs. This diet is not hard and you don't have to starve to death. You get unlimited fruits and vegetables (along with several other things he lists), you're allowed to eat Boca Burgers (I prefer the original vegan) and there's tons of information on the web that can help you with recipes and give you ideas to help get through this phase. Some things that have helped me are the Steam bag veggies that you just pop in the microwave for 5-6 min and they are good to go (Asian Medley and the Garlic Cauliflower are already seasoned). Also the Weight Control oatmeal packets from Quaker help. (I eat 2 packs a day). They come in different flavors and are pretty much the same as the regular oatmeal instead of the strawberry and peach flavors that have way more sugar.

Buying fruits like bananas, apples, peaches, etc. that you can just grab and go help me a lot if i wait too long to eat and need something right away. Remembering to eat every 3-4 hours helps a lot as well.

I feel very good about this diet and I'm very happy with my purchase.

I've been on this eating plan for 41 days now. Last I checked, I've lost almost 20 pounds so far. I could have lost more by now, but there is one thing I haven't been able to stick to, and that is exercising. I will be working on that part soon. I ordered this book through Amazon after watching a dose of Celebrity Fit Club. I had the book for about 2-3 months before being "ready" to make a change. If you're anything like me and crave pizza, cheeseburgers, french fries, potatoes, pasta, and steaks, etc. (all that savory, artery clogging food) - you will be up for a challenge. Of course it's not going to be easy. All I dream about is eating a slice of pizza! STILL! But, the difference is, now I am looking forward to reaching my goal weight, just so I can have this little treat. Honestly, I am one of those people who really had no will power when it came to food. I love food. It's a simple, easy to read book. It doesn't give you all the answers, but once you start changing your eating habits and what you normally eat, you will be inspired to do your best, and that will give you the will power you need. I was worried I would relapse into my old ways because of stress from work, and losing a loved one, but so far, so good. Yes, I still crave those other foods (that's the hardest part), but losing weight gives you the motivation to continue with what you're doing and changing that you somehow muster the strength to fight off those food demons! It's worth a try, it really is.

Hmmm, 90% of reviewers are in or finishing Phase I...and the rest are in Phase II...
Where are the people who have been on this beyond Phase III? I'm VERY suspect of a diet that shows only initial success...
I can show you a multitude of diets that will make pounds 'melt' off in the first 2 weeks...but it's the LONG term that's important!
A program like Body for Life is great this way!
I'll wait for 4+ month advocates before I recommend this book!

I love this program!

I love this program! As opposed to many extremely limiting diets that have a detox component, the fat smash diet allows you to have foods like oatmeal, eggs, and yogurt during its detox. After the detox, you begin to incorporate meats, but by that time, you are so happy you made it through the detox successfully and see changes on the scale or the way your clothes fit, you are more conscious of the foods you are willing to consume. Additionally, the exercise component is manageable. I don't exercise a second time after dinner, which the book suggests, but I have still seen results. Ultimately, this book retrains your eating habits and exercise plan. I think it's definitely worth a try.

I know enough already. Everywhere you turn there's something about losing weight, staying fit and knowing the why's and how's to do it. Some of these things are helpful and some just manage to give us a headache. This book is one of those helpful things. If you want to know about carbohydrates and how they affect the human body then read this book.

This book isn't a weight loss type of book. It is a book that will teach about carbohydrates and why they can be good and bad for you. It gives you research information on the many health related problems carbohydrates can cause.

With the information given to you from this book you will learn what foods are high in carbohydrates. Bread is just one of the many things that people to need to think about. A low carbohydrate diet can contain many foods that you didn't realize are good for you.

It also teaches you that many of the things we hear about fats in our diet may not be necessarily true or unhealthy. Yes many of them are, but Life Without Bread points out that fat is not the leading cause of most dietary related diseases - carbohydrates are. With the easy to understand explanations in this book you will come to realize what is good for you and what is bad for you and most importantly why.

If you are struggling with a dietary problem or know someone who is then read this book. It will give all the information necessary to make the right decisions about your diet and your health.

I was advised to obtain this book by my Gastroenterologist. I have Atrophy Dysplasia Gastritis and I am at risk for stomach cancer. Changing my way of eating according to "Life Without Bread" has help tremendously with the constant bloating and pain. I have also started to lose weight and inside I feel healthier than I have in years. Listening to everyone about eat this, eat that, etc.; forget these people. If you are willing to change your diet to the way people use to eat and were much healthier and lived longer than I urge you to buy this book and absorb all the knowledge that has been gathered throughout the centuries.

Excellent Must read for all!

I read this years ago, in the beginning of the "hype". It really is the one book that clicked with me and made so much sense. I highly recommend to all the skeptics! Eating under 72 carbs is very reasonable and do able. Tons of great scientific information.

This book helped me to get my Crohn's disease under control and get off of all those terrible medications. I lost weight, stopped the bleeding and bloating, lost 4% body fat and all of my lab work came back much improved from last year. Triglcerides were 135- now 57, HDL was 38, now 55. Plus I feel a lot better and look much better!
