A Well-Written Eye-Opener of a Book

This is the most accessible of the books currently available on dangers to health of a high salt/sodium diet. Given that almost all of us eat this type of diet, this is also (to use a well-worn cliche) one of those books "everyone should read," and not just those who have high blood pressure. It is also one of those books I'm sure the food processing conglomerates and the salt industry would like to see out of print as soon as possible (note that it actually is out of print at this time, but I certainly hope a 2nd printing will be available soon).

A nut-shell description of the book is that:
(1) dietary salt/sodium in high amounts combined with dietary potassium in low amounts will, over time, gradually contribute to the onset of a number of diseases (heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, hypertension, and asthma)
(2) most people don't have a clue how much salt/sodium they're actually eating because roughly 80% of it is "hidden" in processed foods
(3) changing diet by decreasing salt/sodium (particularly processed foods) while increasing potassium (particularly fruits & vegetables) is an effective (and the safest) way to lower blood pressure and protect against the onset of these diseases

After reading this book, I immediately felt more optimistic about my health and my ability to control it. I also have a keener sense of what foods are surprisingly high in salt/sodium and are contributing to the western world's epidemic of obesity, high blood pressure, and disease. The authors' advice is compelling and difficult to refute. They build their case on the basis of studies published in reputable medical journals such as the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. In particular, they suggest that one of the best ways to prevent and even reverse these diseases is to reduce salt/sodium in our diets while increasing the amount of natural foods we eat. I particularly like the idea that it's not necessary to go "cold turkey" on salt. Instead, some salt/sodium can be eaten BUT it must be balanced with potassium-rich foods. There are also tips and advice about smoothly adapting to a lower salt/sodium diet. By following them, I have lowered my blood pressure significantly, and have more energy than I've had in years, and an increased feeling of well-being. I had a physical exam last week and my doctor was VERY impressed with my health. A final comment is that you may want to get more than one copy of this book because, like me, you may find yourself wanting to give it to family and close friends. I've had 3 copies and have given all mine away. If you're serious about improving and preserving your health in a drug-free way, this is the book for you.

Having tried about every diet that has been out in the past few years, I joined Weight Watchers, and purchased four of Sandra Woodruff's books. This was one of my last books of hers that I purchased, and I'm so sorry that I didn't have these books years ago. She teaches one to cook with very little fat,to lose weight sensibly, and to finally have an eating plan that doesn't make a person feel like they are being deprived. I feel great, and after two months I am ten pounds slimmer. The books all go along with the Weight Watchers plan, and so it is easy to count points. This book has so many good hints about how to improve one's health and to lose weight. The best part is that this plan works. Thank you Sandra Woodruff!

Keys to Health, Wellness, and a Clear Mind

Tremendous summary of what it takes to get healthy and stay healthy. Dr. Madeira truly understands and teaches the tenets to a healthy body and mind. Most people should understand these things, however it is only a minority of the population that embraces nerve impingement disease caused by subluxations in the spine as the number one cause for all doctors visits and health problems.

This information needs to get out into the general population, and that is why I've taken upon myself to spread these truths to all churches and organizations in my area. I am a doctor, have read many books on health and wellness, none as comprehensive as this one.

Brilliant

Review Date: 2008-10-28
This is an excellent book -- at the launch event for this book in Drogheda, Ireland, I met dozens of people who have benefited from Georgina's weight-loss clinics. I was quite impressed by Georgina herself -- she is an excellent example of someone who has quit an unhealthy pattern and is now fit and full of vigour.

When I was later writing a book about marketing, I used Georgina to illustrate a point. Here is the excerpt from Book Marketing DeMystified: Enjoy Discovering the Optimal Way to Sell Your Self-Published Book, Practical advice from the inventor of print-on-demand (POD) publishing...

Many authors will initially think what they are selling is simply
`a book' until they pause and consider that most of us don't
buy books - instead we are actually buying entertainment, or advice and
hope for becoming thinner/sexier/richer/smarter, or inspiration to find
happiness and fulfillment, or a gift for a relative, or how-to information
on parenting or investing, etc., etc.

Georgina Cronin was under no illusion that she'd be selling mere
words on paper when she began writing Size Matters - Especially when
you weigh 330 lbs [isbn 1553955595], her weight-loss story and manual.
From her base in rural Ireland, she'd successfully counseled hundreds
of overweight people and knew that they needed hope and inspiration,
and a program to see them through the life-long process of gaining control
over one's eating patterns.

Georgina's understanding of her product led to a publicity campaign
beginning with mass-circulation Irish and English newspapers.
She would appear at the editorial offices, showing `before' photos and
offering herself as dramatic proof of her program's effectiveness. She'd
lost 11 stone (156 lbs.) and has kept that weight off for over 6 years. The
newspapers ran full-page features on this inspiring story.
Before and after photos of Georgina are used on the book's covers
and all publicity materials. Clearly the purchasers were connecting on an
emotional level, hoping to try the program themselves or to give the book
to a friend or relative who needed inspiration.

Georgina took so much enjoyment in having a book in print, and in
publicizing her book and weight-loss program, that she and husband David
have set up a book publishing and marketing service called Moyhill
Publishing [...] at their new home in Spain. She continues
to counsel about healthy eating.

Now Georgina is providing hope and inspiration to both the overweight
and aspiring authors.

At last, a fun and healthy approach to weight loss!
Helpful Votes: 44 out of 48 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-23
I read this book in a night and at 5am excitedly began trying some of the exercise examples. My son, who was "camping" in the living room for the week-end, opened one eye warily and asked me if I'd lost it? Before I knew it however, he began showing me the movements. At last, a practical book that details an approach to weight loss that eliminates hunger, promotes self-determination without the negatives and creates a fun and healthy new lifestyle for the whole family! Judy Mazel's approach to weight loss in "The New Beverly Hills Diet" had helped me lose 17 lbs. almost overnight, but the simple modifications to the plan in "Slim and Fit Kids" creates just enough flexibility to make it easier and all inclusive. More importantly, Dr. John Monaco's medical expertise clearly supports July Mazel's approach to weight loss and answers many of the leading questions about obesity, lifestyle and 'food stuffs' that currently plagues American society today. In addition, the exercises, recipes and the positive psychological support presents an unbeatable package. I highly recommend "Slim and Fit Kids", not just for families with overweight kids, but for everyone who is concerned about their health.

sound advice for parents

This book gives specific recommendations on how to help your child adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent and treat obesity. At a time when the number of overweight children is greatly increasing, this book provides timely advice. The book is easy to read and is not full of medical jargon even though it is written by a medical doctor. The advice echoes what my pediatrician had recommended for my child, only that it is much more specific in its recommendations. I greatly recommend it to any parent battling with the difficult problem of childhood obesity.

I was delighted to see that this book is available to people in the US, as I had recommended it to a friend over there (I am from the UK where Slimming world is based.)

I moved over to this way of eating when a low-carbohydrate diet didn't work for me - despite doing everything properly I actually put on weight!

The Slimming World plan is for life - and it works. You can eat as much of certain foods as you want on certain days - but it isn't food combining... You don't have to count calories... you don't have to count grams of fat or of carbohydrates... You only have to weigh a very few restricted foods...

Two days ago I ate roast chicken, vegetables, potatoes and Yorkshire pudding - the next day I weighed a pound less... Last night I ate a huge bowl of pasta with a delicious sauce, and wine...! Today I weigh another pound less. You can realistically expect a healthy loss of 1-3 pounds per week.

The diet plan in this book is very well explained and the recipes are delicious. If you don't have Slimming World clubs in the US yet, then this is the next best thing.
