Complete review about the health benefits of fiber
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-14
Most Americans consume 8-12 grams per day of fiber because we prefer foods containing "fat, sugar, and salt." By increasing our fiber intake up to 25-30 grams per day, we can decrease our chances of heart disease, cancer, and stroke considerably. These are the three main causes of death in America. Increased fiber intake has many other health benefits that are reviewed here. Betty Kamen has taken an otherwise boring subject - "fiber" and made her text interesting, informative, and highly documented with medical literature. Everyone can benefit from the concepts presented here - everyone who wants to live longer and healthier. Armed with this knowledge and by taking a fiber supplement (Bios Life 2 by Rexall), I have personally lost 29 lbs. in 10 weeks, lowered my cholesterol from 228 down to 170 in the first 23 days, and lowered my blood pressure from 130/90 to 118/70. The facts presented here are truly life changing. I'm a physician, and I personally recommend this book to many people with health care concerns that fiber either prevents or potentially cures. "Fiber" - how could something so simple escape the modern medical world? Betty Kamen's book reminds us of our past dietary habits before the fast food industry and the processed foods came on the scene.

I found this book and plan much easier to get in to than Dr Atkins. As a Brit, I like the no nonsense, no bragging approach to this diet. You don't have to go through all the pains, headeaches and strict regime of Atkins to still get great results! An excellent book .Also his carb counting book is great, as well as his cookbook.

Delicious Recipes Using Cayce Food Suggestions
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-22
These are great recipes. I love them. My family loves them. The recipes follow Cayce's suggestions of food combinations and food preparations espoused by his trance source.

I especially like that there's a lot of recipes for vegetables--because they're so healthy and recipes are so delicious--and soups because they can be made in double amounts and reheated the next day.

Cayce often recommended molded salads because gelatin in the diet helps the body to absorb nutrients. Not surprisingly, there are a number of molded salads.

The leg of lamb is a great family favorite. It also includes kelp, which is a wonderful source of many natural minerals. How could something so healthy taste so good!!! Cayce also recommended wild game and organ meats as preferable to other meats. Therefore, you'll find recipes for venison, rabbit, kidneys, and sautéed chicken livers.

Unbelievably, the kids love lettuce soup. If you keep a garden, this is the recipe to use when suddenly, after waiting forever for the lettuce to leaf out, you have way too much of the delicious greens and the plants are about the bolt. The leaves are cooked in a chicken stock. Yummy. There's also a recipe for vegetable stock if you prefer.

Even when the children were little, they were crazy about millet casserole--go figure. Little kids liking something that healthy? Anything's possible. Another super favorite in this household is Eggplant "Kiss of Wine."

You'll also find a recipe for Jerusalem Artichokes which Cayce recommended for diabetes tendencies and blood sugar stabilization.

Marceline Newton used to be the cook at the Marshall's Hotel where people used to stay who attended Cayce conferences. She took the suggestions in the Cayce readings for healthy foods and food combinations and created delicious meals out of them. These are the meals she served in their cafeteria.

If you want to know how to prepare the foods suggested in books such as An Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Foods for Health and Healing and Edgar Cayce on Healing Foods for Body, Mind, and Soul, this is the book for you.

Very highly recommended!!!
