The book has a spiral binding so it'll lay flat and slick pages so that it's easier to wipe off splatters. The instructions are easy to follow and there are plenty of pictures to show processes or the final result. There's also pertinent dietary information with each recipe.

Great meals!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-19
After looking at several cookbooks on low-fat cooking, I bought this one and a few others from other authors. I've always loved soups and stews, but have never been much of a cook. This author's book was the best I tried.

I've made many of the recipes in this book and have liked all of them. The meals have all been low-fat and low-sodium, but because of the well-chosen seasonings and flavors, are very tasty and satisfying. The key to the recipes is the choice of seasonings. The recipes have blended low-fat and low-sodium ingredients into wonderful combinations.

All of the recipes are very different from each other, giving me a wide variety of meals. I also appreciate that the book shows color photos of many of the meals, and all the recipes have the calorie count, fat amount, sodium amount, etc. shown.

Because I've liked all of the recipes I've tried so far from this book, I've also bought most of the other books in this same series and have been pleased with all of them.

Larger than Life

Macrobiotics first had its roots in America when Michio and his wife, Avelin came to this country in the 1950's with a vision that was "larger than life". Macro-bio-tics is exactly that. And the Macrobiotic Diet, as described in this book (among the many that exist today) is one that doesn't just center around the do's and don'ts of proper eating. It is a lifestyle; it is a way to think about one's body, mind, and soul. When the macrobiotic principles of balance and nutrition are combined with yoga practice and meditation, the result is unity and wholeness. The circle is complete. Michio Kushi does not attempt to burden the reader with instructions on what is good and what is bad. Although some novices to this practice may run into the mistake of treating his "prescriptions" as limits in themselves, the book is meant to describe additions that can be made to one's already existing diet, instead of just pointing out that dairy and meat are "no no's". Though the macrobiotic approach may intimidate or seem too strict at first, it is actually very flexible and open. Otherwise, how can one expect to develop an open mind by following a diet that is limiting and rigid? The other critical point I'd like to note is, however comprehensive the text, passive reading will never substitute for the magic and connection of actually PRACTICING macrobiotics with close friends and family members, or other people familiar with the approach that would be willing to serve as a guide. Never think that you must walk this road alone. The energy you get from macrobiotic cooking should be a source of personal freedom and inspiration that carries you forward and brings you closer to people. One of the principle underlying ideas of macrobiotics is that the food you eat partially determines who you are--thus, in offering explanations for some of the ways to observe the macrobiotic diet, Michio talks about the chemistry behind the kinds of foods you would eat and how, depending on how yin or yang they are, that may affect your behavior and even personality. Thus, my advise is to use macrobiotics to heal yourself of any tensions, stresses, or aggressivity (if you feel them) by "linking" yourself with others who follow this practice in hopes of speaking the same language and leading a more peaceful life.

thank you very much for this opportunity to share,

This is one of my most treasured books. I bought it because the title seemed so "out there." But already had an interest in so-called alternative healing and spirituality, and needed something apart from accepted dogma. This book shows you exactly how to do palm healing and encourages you to do it as part of your daily life. There are photos throughout with people showing the various placements of the hands. The group palm healing photos at the back, are inspirational. The book contains lots of information on chakras and energy meridians, as well as a way of life suggestion list that actually changed my way of life very much for the better. I am thankful I bought this book.

The perfect blend of the spiritual and the practical, this book illuminates so many topics previously mysterious to me, such as traditional Oriental versus Western (Occidental) medicine; yin and yang (an incredibly comprehensive explanation of these concepts and why they should matter to every human being, no matter what their spiritual perspective); plus an array of what are unfortunately still considered "alternative" medical treatments, like acupuncture, palm healing, and shiatsu, and many simple self-treatments (sound therapy through the use of basic breathing/"chanting" techniques; stretches for stimulating stagnating organs). It's a whole body/mind/universe view that helps us understand the profound connectedness of "in here" and "out there" in terms of energy (ki, chi). A wonderful overview book to serve as a springboard for discovering topics for further exploration, but still full of immediately usable information without further reading.

Dr. Kotzsch describes the theory behind the cooking, that is, everything else you would like to know about macrobiotic living after you have more or less learned the cooking. He applies the macrobiotic ideas to today's living, and provides examples so that one learns that cleanliness and order for example, will promote the free flow of vital energy in a home. This is really a guide to macrobiotic thinking. Delightful that it is in print, it should be made available in softcover.

We really have to thank our Canadian neighbo(u)rs for this one. I've just done a bit of research on the sugaring process, and I can say that this is the nicest book on the subject. It's informative -- not only about current practices, but also about the history and culture surrounding maple sugar and syrup. It can appeal to a wide audience, from children to adults, because of the simple way the information is arranged. But best of all - it's gorgeous! Every photo is in color. You get only a taste (!) of what's inside from the stunning cover, which depicts a variety of syrup bottles. Extra bonuses include the "Flavour wheel for maple products" and a variety of recipes. Helen and Scott Nearing's "The Maple Sugar Book" (1950, 1972, 2000) may be the classic reference, but writer Janet Eagleson and photographer Rosemary Hasner should get some kind of award for producing such a useful yet lovely volume. Granted, folks who want to get into commercial sugaring should track down a copy of the Nearings' work. But syrup connoisseurs and backyard sugarers will enjoy turning the pages of this one, over and over. It's small enough to fit onto any bookshelf, yet elegant enough to grace any coffee table, year round.

LOSE weight, FIND happiness. This is the true NO-diet diet.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-17
Everyone knows that diets don't work. Everyone knows that if we ate only for true bodily hunger, we probably wouldn't be overweight. Everyone knows that it is mind-driven hungers that lead us to overeat. I knew all of this for twenty years, as I lived on the rollercoaster of weight gain and loss. But after reading THE MIDDLE WAY DIET FOR HEALTH AND FITNESS: HEALTHY MIND AND BODY, I finally got off the rollercoaster. Because Dr. Moshedi provides not only the knowledge you need to understand how to eat well, but the inspiration to actually do it. Dr. Moshedi's insights into the basis of our troubled connections between mind and body triggered a change in my basic outlook to food. His motivating book was a wake-up call for the wisdom that was already in me, the wisdom Dr. Moshedi explains is already in every one of us--to put food in its proper place in our lives, so that we can eat to live instead of living to eat. And the best (and most surprising) part, the part that everyone *doesn't* know, is the real and lasting pleasure that you get from taking good care of your body. Dr. Moshedi's book opened my eyes to the truth of the discomfort and unhappiness involved in overeating, a truth that we tend to disregard because we have bought into the illusory and momentary pleasure that comes from indulging. Much more than a health & fitness book to help you live longer, THE MIDDLE WAY DIET FOR HEALTH AND FITNESS is ultimately a thought-provoking guide to help you truly enjoy your life--today.
