Headaches and migrainesReview Date: 2003-05-12
It goes through the four phases of a migraine. It's exactly what happens to me except for the aura.
con: recipes contain possible trigger foods, such as blue cheese.
I've purchased a lot of books on migraines and this is my favorite. I feel I can share this book with family members so they can better understand what I go through.

Great bookReview Date: 2004-02-10
This book is quite large. It stands about 15 inches tall, and has 512 pages filled with advice on food allergies, diabetes, arthritis, cancer prevention and heart disease. The information is easy to read and understand. It helps explain what you need to do to help increase your health with these illnesses. With diabetes, heart disease and arthritis in my family, I find the information extremely useful. With lactose intolerance in my husband's family, I find the information invaluable. In raising my son, I do not restrict his intake of a specific food item, but I am using the information from our family history and trying not to give him an excess of food items that can ultimately make him ill.
The book contains over 300 recipes. With each recipe comes a guide, which indicates whether that particular recipe is gluten-free, wheat-free, corn-free, dairy-free, nut-free, shellfish-free, egg-free, yeast-free or Soya-free. Also, with each recipe, is a breakdown of the nutritional content: calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, fiber and sodium. This information is invaluable! How many times have you found a recipe and did not really understand that it actually did have a high fat content! With this book, you do not have to wonder, as the information is all there!
"Healing Foods" is also loaded with photographs. Not only do you get gorgeous photos of the end result of the recipes, but there are also preparation photos. I find this very useful when you have never heard of a dish before, and have trouble picturing it in my mind!
The index is fabulous too. Not only does it contain a standard index, but also an index of recipes for special diets: low-cholesterol, low salt, and more! There is also an information section, where you can find additional information about a particular health problem like diabetes!
There are many delicious recipes
in this book: Spring Vegetable
Omelet, Beef Tagine With Sweet Potatoes, Potato and Garlic Soup,
Portuguese Rice Pudding
and Rice & Beans With Avocado Salsa! All of these were a huge success in my home!
I would highly recommend this book for anyone with the above health problems, or for anyone who is interested in eating healthier. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Easy to swallow nutritional info and tasty recipes.Review Date: 2006-08-10
If you are trying to incorporate healthier foods into your diet or just bone up on what's good for what than this is a great book. Its layout is very friendly. The author breaks her chapters down into the areas you keep your food; ie "The Tea Tin", "The Honey Jar", "The Cookie Jar", "The Fruit Basket", "The Breadbox", "The Vegetable Bin" and so on. (Like the title suggests.)
Each chapter gives basic buying and storing info, pertinent health info, a highlighted section of "Best For Helping You: . . ." that lists its health benefits such as "Prevent heart disease", and "Strengthen bone" etc.
The recipes that I've tried are interesting, easy and tasty. (I love the barley bread!) They aren't complicated and you don't need to go to the ends of the earth to find some odd rare thing that the recipe can't be made without.
I love veggies but have a tendency to get bored with them and need reminders of yummy combinations or spices that I've forgotten about. This book pulls me out of that tunnel vision that there's one way to make something and when I'm bored with that then I just don't eat that something anymore for a while.
The recipes also give a per serving breakdown on calories, carbs, fat, saturated fat, dietary fiber, cholesterol and sodium. Handy info that.
I would highly recommend this book to a wide variety of people. If you're a beginner on the "eating healthier" path then this book's Basics will be very helpful without lecturing you or making you feel stupid for not knowing this already.
If you do know a lot of this nutrition stuff already, I'd bet you'd still like this book for how it compartmentalizes everything into easy-to-referece bits. You would certainly want your less nutritionally-advanced friends to have a copy for themselves because you love them and want them to live longer, healthier lives.

This book is a godsend. It's a quick read and easy to understand. I made the changes she suggested in her book regarding diet. Also, I purchased the green food supplement. Well, my daughter no longer has to take medication for bipolar disorder. It's amazing what a little green can do!
