You can tell the author really enjoys this spice and wants others to learn of its many virtues. It is a fun read, has some interesting facts and tempting recipes. Luckily I reside in an area that has Indian and Asian markets, so I plan to put this new knowledge to work for better health.

Another brilliant book from the Diet Freedom team

Review Date: 2006-07-03
This is a GREAT cookbook. It is simple, easy and delicious and stands both alone and as a great companion to the previous books from the Diet Freedom (.co.uk) team. I found their first book about 18 months ago now, and have been hooked since. I have lost 76lbs (just over 5 stone, or about 35kgs - apologies for any bad math there!) and feel like a $million!! The cookbook gives cup sizes in the recipes so translates well to the US, and I have been asked by so many people to bring back copies of the books when in the UK (as I am a lot) that my baggage is HEAVY ... but I'm not!!

There is an online diet / healthy eating club that has been a great support to me as I have been finally shedding my unwanted weight, and I highly recommend this book, The 7-Day GL Diet and their first book The GL Diet (though you can do it with any one of them, but the cookbook has such GREAT recipes :o)!!) as well as the web club. Really supportive, no preaching or unrealistic goals. And how often can you actually access the authors of a book and have them answer your questions and chat to you online? I'm impressed! These guys clearly have been through the process themselves and really understand what it is like to have been constantly frustrated with dieting.

Also, it is easy to stick to, the food is great, and it's a really nice habit to get. You don't have to spend loads of money on fancy foods, you don't have to ask for weird things or go 'off menu' and noone need know you're dieting at all as there are hints and tips on how to be maintain as 'normal' a way of eating as possible. The only questions you'll get are 'you look INCREDIBLE, how did you do it' and then you may need an osteopath for your back as you lug copies of the books about!!!

As y'all can see I can't recommend it enough - I have tried every diet under the sun, and my health suffered hugely. Now I am lighter, with loads of energy, self esteem and a totally transformed life (and wardrobe, thank goodness!!)

Thanks Nigel, Tina, Deborah & Diet Freedom - A life changing series of books! x Claire

Clears up myths and errors

This book made a great deal of sense. We have been on the low fat kick for years and obesity has kept increasing. We eat more of less satisfying foods. I switched and find that I am far more satisfied and eat less of really good things, because they are truly more satisfying. It's a good investment in your health.

I have really enjoyed this series of cook books. Everything I've made from it has been good. You don't need to do many conversions for the measurements and they have a chart in the back in case you need it as well as a glossary. Some ingrediants will need to be looked up since they use different names. [...]

wheat free and dairy free
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-02
At our house we are both gluten and dairy free and that combination (in a cookbook) is difficult to find. Generally I can find one or the other but not both in the same book. Well this is the book that solved that issue. There are over 300 no-milk, no grain recipes. And, the recipes are not only easy to follow but the ingredients are easy to find and items I already had in my kitchen. In the first few pages of the book, there is also a good review of things you can eat and a list of forbidden foods (if you want to maintain a gluten and dairy free diet.) This is also a good introductory book for those just wanting to try this "healthier" way of eating.

Goulash and Picking Pickles A Zesty Read
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-29
If you grew up in the 1950s, you like reading about the era, or you like the solid, no-nonsense delicious cooking of the period, check out Farmington, New Mexico author Louise Hoffmann's autobiography `Goulash and Picking Pickles.' Ms. Hoffmann grew up in Wisconsin, a teacher's kid in a German Lutheran family. Her father taught her from first through 8th grade, and he expected nothing but the best school work from her.

He also loved her, in his way. So did her mother and four siblings. Therefore `Goulash and Picking Pickles' is a zesty mix of tender, frustrating, funny, scary, wonderful, and terrifying moments of growing up the daughter of a fairly important person in a small, homogenous town.

Anyone with strong ethnic roots will find something to identify with in `Goulash and Picking Pickles.' Hoffmann recalls such things of singing `Silent Night' in both German and English, following the strict rules laid down by her father, and learning about her roots from her grandparents.

Baby boomers will especially like `Goulash and Picking Pickles,' because it describes the things kids did in the 1950s and 1960s: sleep-overs, sock hops, finding ways to earn pocket money, going to church, wondering about boys, love--and death.

Ms. Hoffmann closes each chapter of her book with a family recipe, Grandma's Potato Salad, Zucchini Pickles, or Easy Summer Salad. The simple directions and ingredients will bring back memories to anyone who grew upon family picnics and church covered-dish suppers.

A teacher and librarian, Louise Hoffmann writes in an easy-to-read down-home style that will get a lot of older readers saying `gee I remember when---,' and a lot of younger ones asking Grandma `what happened when--?'

`Goulash and Picking Pickles' should be on on every family's list of heritage books to read. It's a great way to get people telling family stories. It's a good example to look at if someone is interested in writing their own memoir or autobiography.

Superb Low Fat Cooking
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-27
As I have been advised to go on a low-fat diet and lose weight I have been looking at books in my local library on Low-fat cooking and I came across The Light & Lean Low-fat Cookbook by Anne Sheasby. I was very impressed by the tips on how to reduce calories and fat, also the guide to healthy eating and the nutritional analyses, not to mention the simple way the book was laid-out and illustrated, and of course the recipes. Every recipe is clearly set out and also shows the amount of calories per serving, fat content, protein content etc. together with variations on the recipes. I never knew low-fat cooking could taste so good, and the Desserts & Puddings are fabulous.
