In some ways this is another book on the difficulties of dieting and why it often does not work. On the other hand, it provides one of the most thorough examinations of weight problems that you can find. Most of the book has almost nothing to do with dieting. Instead the author examines emotional factors in weight control, psychological factors, self-esteem, biochemical individuality, hormones, minerals, toxicity, food allergies, blood type, emotional balance, stress, toxic pollutants, and even parasites. In short, she examines all the various factors that have been attributed to weight problems.

She does an excellent job of discussing the role of psychological factors and how they influence your weight. Whether it is eating for the wrong reasons, dealing with limiting beliefs, healing your inner child, dealing with shame or a critical inner voice, or self-esteem, no area escapes examination. She even points an accusing finger in the direction of doctors, referring to some as "finger-pointers in white lab coats".

Another particularly good part of the book is where she discusses how a diet has to fit you. An effective diet has to match your biochemical individuality, carbohydrate sensitivity, insulin resistance, thyroid function and metabolic rate, hormone balance, etc.

Some readers may have problems where she varies from the traditional view and heads off into the area of alternative medicine. However, she makes a valid point that in the interest of presenting a thorough examination of the issue she has included this information. In this section she closely examines toxicity and how to detoxify your body. Included is information on colon cleansing and parasites as well as the use of natural remedies.

I have to say it is refreshing to find a book that looks at this problem from all sides instead of taking the position that something that worked for one person is the perfect solution for everyone. It just is not that simple. "Fat and Furious" is a highly recommended read for anyone seeking a solution to diets that don't work and who want to understand the various factors involved in controlling your weight.

I received this book as part of a PR packet in my office and when the author called to see if I had received it I took a deeper look. I have just ordered three more copies so that a number of us in the office can do the program together. I have history of CVD, Diabetes and Cancer on both sides of my family and feel that this healthful, well-rounded program will help me change the message my cells are getting from the food I eat. I will be giving this book as a gift as well as following the plan for the rest of my life.

Thank you, Jennifer!

Let me add something for everyone to think about. Whenever there are calamities and catastrophies, it seems that idolatry is just around the corner. How long will people learn what God hates most.

Wonderful ethnography

"Feeding Desire" is a revealing work of ethnography concerning the culture of force-feeding adolescent girls so that they turn into "bountiful" figures, figures considered attractive among the Saharan Moors. I have used it in two different courses on Africa and students have responded very favorably to it. The discussions about the book were the liveliest of the semester. The book is beautifully written with very good photographs. It is an excellent book.

great alternative to meds!

If you have a child who is sensitive to different foods that may be affecting behavior, this is the book for you. Was very helpful in addressing behavior that can be caused by foods. I used it for my child and found good results. It is not the easiest thing to change your child's diet, but if the behavior difference becomes apparent even to the child, then you have won half the battle. A must try before you put your child on meds!!

I promise you'll love my book, FigureShaping. It's only seventy-three pages long, so you can slip it into your purse and always have it with you when you're faced with restaurant and grocery food choices that may be a little too tempting (especially when you're hungry!) Just open the book and you'll be inspired to stay on track and choose healthier, more slenderizing meals. Believe me, it works! Go to my website to get more info on the book, my school, and myself - www.holisticlifeinstitute.com.

A great tool for healthy eating

This book is a terrific tool for those of us interested in healthy eating. The recipes are easy to prepare, cooking instructions are simple and most recipes take less than half an hour for prep. That the book contains recipes from famous chefs adapted as low fat, using fresh ingredients that are locally grown is a real bonus. Susan Spicer's jambalaya is a favorite in our household. Finally that the book is more at home on the kitchen counter than a coffee table speaks volumes about its usefulness to the home cook.

Finally, this book is what I've wanted to read for a long time. Whether you're struggling with disordered eating, negative body image, or wonder if you're really overweight, this book is a wonderful resource. Aside from typical topics relating to food, this book also highlights nicely-organized sections on health subjects from hypoglycemia to irritable bowel syndrome. The chapters on good nutrition and healthy weight loss are excellent as well. All in all, this book is a keeper: well-organized, a pleasure to read, and a real literary companion in a time of widespread information overload.

This volume is readable, engaging and expertly researched. Yes $52 is a bit painful - but it truly is a unique piece.

Do you want to know the current diet of a third generation Italian American? The nutritional problems specific to recent immigrants from Samoa? What genetic predispositions for riboflavin deficiencies exist among indigenous north american poulations? It's all here.

The authors' use of bold headings, photos and catchy sidebars all contribute to an excellent primer on the cultural influences on nutrition in present-day US.
