A wonderful book for those just beginning a raw food regime, or long-time "symbiotics" who thought they knew everything. This book does more than just give Sapotes Unique perspective on raw food. It teaches us hwo the mineral balance of foods affect our physiology and personality: our body mind. It relates the Sodium /potassium (which he identifies as with the macrobiotic yin/yang) and Calcium/Phosphorus (Alkaline/Acidic) balance of different foods to their effects on the eater. This will be particularly valuable for those who have been trying to go raw but can't beat those uncontrollable cravings: sometimes you might need minerals: THis is of particular relevance to people attempting a pure-fruit regime, who find that they are OK if they don't eat much, but if they eat more.... Highly recommended.

This book provides excellent information for the established raw fooder on how to balance out the bodies highs and lows.

It also contains loads of inspiring information to anyone interested in increasing the amount of raw food in their diet.

The chart initially is a bit confusing. Makes you think though and explains why meat is so unbalancing and fruit is the ideal food for humans at the centre of the chart.

If you want excellent health buy this book and just do it.

I love this cookbook! The beginning of the book starts out with great informative information about each essential food. And then when choosing a dish, you know what health benefits you're getting from the ingredient(s).
The Red Cabbage with Sour Cherries isn't normally something I'd make, but it sounded intriguing and boy, is it wonderful!!! Along with the cabbage, I made the Turkey & Spinach Mini-Meat Loaves...fantastic and so easy to prepare!!! My husband has already asked me to make both again and to serve at a dinner party.

I have a few Dana Jacobi cookbooks and was very excited to see this new one. I always feel confident that her recipes will not only be healthy, but unique and tasty as well.

Awesome Book!!!

I purchased this book primarily because I met the author at a Nutrition and Health conference and wanted to support her venture. But . . . When it came and I had a chance to spend some time with it I was amazed!!! It is full of simple, yet creative ways to make healthy eating also enjoyable eating. In addition it is full of wonderful tips that would take someone like myself years to gather on my own. An absolute must for anyone that loves to cook as well as those of us that are challenged by it. It is difficult to try and keep cooking and preparing food healthy yet enjoyable - this books makes it extremely simple. A must have!!

This was the best book on vitamins and mineral supplments that I have ever read! It is comprehensive, very readable, and has excellent information. I learned a lot from each write-up and it was written in understandable language. Very well organized so you can easily find specific subjects you are looking for. An excellent reference manual for every home!

Exceptional guide to improving health with proper nutrition

Review Date: 1998-11-20
There's now extensive research on the benefits of vitamins and minerals beyond just avoiding diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies. This book is an excellent guide to understanding those benefits and avoiding supplements that either are not beneficial or may even be harmful at excessive levels.

The authors carefully describe the degree to which a claimed benefit for each of 40 some vitamins and minerals is substantiated, as well as risks of toxicity, and dietary sources. There descriptions are based on a balanced assessment of the available research.

The first part of the book is organized by vitamin or mineral, so you can see the collected information on, for example, Vitamin E, in one place. The second part of the book is organized by disease or condition (e.g., cancer, fatigue, etc.) and discusses all the relevant vitamins and minerals, as well as general nutrition issues related to the disease. This second part is very helpful if you're facing a particular problem.

The book includes an extensive set of references, as well as a good glossary and index. Some information has changed in the years since the 2nd edition was published, but it seems generally up-to-date. When the 3rd edition comes out, I'll definitely buy a copy.

The most useful pocket-sized guide I've found
Helpful Votes: 29 out of 30 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-24
The Internet is my primary source of calorie information these days, but recently I needed to buy a printed guide to take on a trip where I wouldn't have Internet access. I wanted a small book (remember those little booklets they used to sell for a quarter at the supermarket check-out counter?); it didn't need to show calorie counts for packaged foods, as those are almost always on the package; and it didn't need to include information about fast foods, which I rarely eat (and those change constantly anyway). I looked in several bookstores (both large and small), and this was the only book I found that fit all my requirements.

In general, I've found the book extremely helpful, but it has a couple of flaws: (1) Foods are grouped into sections according to type (e.g., Dairy or Vegetables), and then into various sub-classifications within each section. Sometimes it's hard to figure out where to find a particular item (the Soups, Stews, etc. section is especially confusing). (2) The cross-references aren't always helpful. I looked up "focaccia" under Breads, and was told "See Pizza," but under Pizza they just list "Italian bread type," not the bread by itself (which is more often used for sandwiches than pizza). It would have taken no more space to give the calorie count than it did to give that worthless cross-reference! (3) There is NO INDEX, which would have solved Problem #1. Still, in general this is a great little guide, and I hope the author continues to improve it in future editions.

Finally, Realistic and Practical Way to Eat!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-19
Okay, I'll confess to having read (and tried) a few (million) diet books. Actually its become a hobby of sorts, but I have to say that this "diet" book is far and away the most practical to consistantly use that I've run across in a very long time. No extremes in terms of foods you must eat or avoid. Recipes and food-prep philosophy easy to incorporate into the daily lives of you and your family. Your digestive system might take a few days to adjust - depending upon what your previously way of eating was like - but overall I think this is a way of eating that most can adapt to.

I had been suffering with chronic constipation and IBS for 52 years and had gone to numerous doctors and healers for help. I stumbled across this book in a Sydney, Australia bookstore 5 months ago, went back the next day, purchased it and put into practice what the author suggested. My health has sky-rocketed! I feel fantastic. My IBS has completely gone, I'm no longer constipated, even when traveling.Every aspect of my health has improved, greatly, including my disposition and feelings of happiness. This woman has literally given me a life I never thought I would have. I thank my lucky stars that I ran across this information. Buy this book and have the health you deserve.

"The Facts About Fats" is essential reading for anyone interested in nutrition. I recommend it to my patients and to health care professionals.

For decades fats have been thought of as nothing more than an unhealthy form of stored energy. But research over the past twenty-five years shows that they are some of the most important, and most commonly deficient nutrients in the human diet.

John Finnegan has written the most informative and concise book about the 'good fat' -- 'bad fat' story and it's relation to health and disease that I have found.

Thanks John

The most readable and practical book on the subject.

There have been two books that have changed the way I thought about food health in general. This is one of them.

We normally don't think of oils and fats as refined foods but they're just as guilty of the fact as wonder bread and white sugar.

This book shows you just how oils are made and gives a brief history of them before telling you what's good and what's bad. It's sensible and logical, and free of buzzwords that frequent books on health.

There are helpful diagrams and charts, of course. There's also a buyer's guide, not to mention a biblography which is a great springboard if you want to read more. This book was particularly a great foundation for the more technical Udo Erasmus book, which I read soon after.

The message of this book is that we are nutritionally deficient because our diets are full of refined oils, that lack nutrients. Once we replace those nutrients, by using healthy oils, we regain that health. The issues of weight control are also addressed but are not as important as you might think in a book about fat.

This book is ten years old. I only wish that more people had read it, and taken it seriously. For more details, read it yourself. It's a great value and you're going to like reading it more than most books on the subject.

Nature's "Universal" Antioxidant

"All About Alpha Lipoic Acid" is a "must read" for everyone! This handy little "pocketguide" will help everyone understand just how essential ALA is to human health and how it can help prevent & treat numerous health conditions that plague our society.

Atherosclerosis, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetes, cancer (all types), Alzheimer's disease, liver disorders, and many other health conditions can be treated using Alpha Lipoic Acid.

Getting all of this information for less ... one of the greatest values you will ever come across!

Everyone should know about Alpha Lipoic Acid! It is the second most powerful antioxidant in the human body (glutathione is first). ALA is the only "universal" (both water and fat-soluble) antioxidant. This means that it protects both the outside (water soluble) and inside (fat soluble) parts of every cell against virtually every type of deadly free radical known to science.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is essential for protecting every major body system & organ (brain, eyes, heart, liver, immune system, etc.) It also helps increase the effectiveness of vitamins C, E, CoQ10 and Glutathione.

If you are serious about using Alpha Lipoic Acid, whether for prevention or treatement of disease(s), "All About Alpha Lipoic Acid" is a great "beginner's" guide!

I use this book almost every night. It usually takes a little longer than 30 min per meal, but it is worth it: every dish I have made was delicious. In addition, the meals are typically pretty easy to cook. My only complain is that the ingredients are sometimes pretty expensive. However, they do provide alternatives for ingredients that are expensive or hard to find.

As a working mom, I like to be able to pre-plan my week's meals and lunches and this book offers such healthy variety that I cannot say enough good things about it. Great images guide you with ideas for presentation and while some ingredients may be challenging to find, I can usually find a substitute or just omit an item without adversely affecting the outcome! Highly recommend this book!
