It is a bold thesis and perhaps unique in its effort to so concisely explain why violence amongst human beings exists in the world, but it is also rife with oversights and gaps. Most of what Tuttle argues is more opinion and belief than "fact."
In a chapter on the dairy industry, Tuttle describes how cows are artificially inseminated, kept perpetually pregnant, and almost immediately separated from their calves. It is a powerful and sensational description. Tuttle goes on to argue that a cow's milk is not intended for human consumption, that it is biologically intended only for its calf and that, therefore, humans should not consume dairy products. This statement is specious. For if this logic were applied to plants, one would come to the conclusion that humans should not eat fruit or vegetables either. Of course, this would be preposterous.
Tuttle identifies many of the problems facing human beings today, but arguing that if all humans became vegans these problems would cease is going too far.
Chances are a reader who is already vegan will feel vindication after finishing this book. A reader who is vegetarian will likely feel some pang of guilt for not being vegan and contemplate taking that next step. An omnivore who reads this book is likely to be put off by its self-righteous tone, but may find it thought-provoking if he or she can get past that. A die-hard meat eater is highly unlikely to make it past page two before setting it down.

He also exposes the culture's deep aversion to looking at this issue and sheds light on why it is so difficult to get others to see the brutality that composes our cultural diet. I was finally able to make sense of why people just seem to shut down when it comes to really looking at where meat comes from. It is our culture's dirty little secret. Deep down we have guilt over it, and we deal with this by either becoming aggressively defensive ("no one is going to tell me what to eat!") or just turning away from the truth and lulling ourselves into a state of denial. When we do this, we numb our basic capacity for empathy and kindness thus creating a more violent world.
Operating from the belief that everything is interconnected, he shows how when we treat animals in barbaric, exploitative ways it lays the foundation for the other ills in society. There is no compartmentalizing. The atrocities in the slaughterhouse don't stay in the slaughterhouse. The energy of the violence and suffering ripples outward like circles in a stream. He shows how human beings who work in slaughterhouses are turned into monsters by the violent work they do all day. One can only imagine how many families are destroyed, how much alcoholism, depression, domestic violence, and suicide results from the dehumanizing work of slaughtering animals.
This is one of the best books I've read, and a must-have for anyone looking to help alleviate the suffering of the world. There is no way I can adequately represent Dr. Tuttle's beautiful, compassionate book, so just buy it and read for yourselves!

The book suggests varying levels of sugar extraction, from simple sugar substitution to complete elimination, making the book applicable to anyone and everyone wanting to cut some or all of the sugar out of their diets. Ann suggests several alternatives for refined sugar and white flour that are worth exploring. I found sucanat and fructose to be excellent sugar substitutions. Also her glycemic index is handy, though not as exaustive as other books I've seen. I've tried several of her recipes with success, and have raised the level of nutrition of my own recipes using her tips and substitutions. Overall, I enjoyed her wholesome approach to food, and will continue to refer to her book often when eating out and cooking at home.

First you take a self-test in this book to determine your type. Then you can figure out a diet based on relative amounts of certain nutrients you need. Apparently, certain nutrients have exact opposite effect in some people--a high protein, low carb diet may be absolutely WRONG for you. I sure would like to know that BEFORE I decide on a diet plan.
I also like the fact this book includes exercises, breathing exercises and recommendations for supplements and vitamins. The calorie levels are also set so you can pick one that suits your size and sex (not everyone should eat an extremely low calorie diet.) Of course the book also has sample menus, which are always helpful. Finally, the paperback edition is a reasonable size to fit in a purse or in a briefcase, meaning it can go with you anywhere.
I wasn't sure if I was Atkins, Pritikin or NO KIN to any of these (turns out I am mixed, so that is why I had trouble) This book is really excellent and I can recommend it to anyone who wants to lose weight and eat right.

He is an exceptional man, who writes so we can all understand. I will be meeting with Dr. Bruno and his team the end of March, I do not know where my new journey will lead me but I know that I will be safe and in the best of care. Dr. Bruno covers just about every physical and emotional aspect-- now if I can just retrain myself to take care of me.
I was able to go to the Clinic and meet with Dr. Bruno and he is as genuine in person as he seems in the book. All the built up anxiety came tumbling out in a rush-- because this book showed he has pulse on my life as a post polio patient and seemed to CARE!!.
I think this book should be required reading for all in the medical field.

By the time Dr. Bruno told me to just "rest - chill for a few weeks" I had to do it; nothing else worked. It DID. I read the book again, and again...trying to find a glitch in his neuro-networking and neurology statements, but I couldn't. So, I did go to the Institute.
Everyone who knows anyone who's had Polio, or any sudden onset illness, or even as my little sister, used to drip food out of her nostrils at age 2 (it was Polio - 1954), must read this book. Be prepared to talk to doctors - they must have PPS as part of their required CMEs NOW. Post Polio surivors can no longer accept mediocre care, and repeated anesthesia "accidents (as I did)." With or without insurance, humans have a basic right to respect and care. I had Polio - I knew I did - and the fears associated with going "back" into it were at times paralyzing in itself...thus I kept swimming daily - often for three hours and lifting weights, anything to avoid breathing problems again, or the horrid stiff neck, or ... seeing my arm next to me and not moving even when I yelled at it!
Post Polio Paradox will give the reader the information needed to take to the medical professionals, and to educate themselves, and . . . gradually, safely, comfortably, change their lives from the fatalistic Type A personalities (which did get us through the horrors of Polio), but paradoxically - aptly put, can destroy us now. IF we are real, we will be able to see our 'worn' parts, accept them, and move on to another phrase in our lives - taking care of ourselves. "Polio Class of 1950"

Some people kick themselves for backsliding on the diet trail. But this is verifivation that you still can continue and get over those mental humps.
This is chrystals everyday challenges that gets her through the storm. She begins to see that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I admire her because she experimented and found a method that was good for her. She teaches that there is no "blueprint" available for everyone.
If this book taught me anything it was the power of jeeping
a journal. It will help you see where the problem lies and how to get through; and it will enable you to identify what is
causing you to stifle your plans. It may be mental, physical or spiritual.
I use this book strictly for motivation.
It's nice to read the words of someone who has been there.
I'd like to see her now! I hope she has kept up the good work.

One of the reviews here mentions the name "Bill Rich." Many of the statements about him are true, but he has nothing solid to do with MSM, other than he stumbled upon it and tries to sell it.
This book and Bill Rich should not be mentioned together (forgive me). Mr. Rich does not speak for MSM, anymore than a bad teleevangelist speaks for God.

I, also, prefer the hardback version of this book. It is out of print but I found that it is still available at the distributor (msmsupplement.com as mentioned by someone in another review).
I hope that there is a new, updated version of this book on the horizon, because I know that MSM is helping so many people with a variety of problems (e.g. Arthritis, Allergies, Energy, Joint and Muscle & Nerve Pain, Skin Conditions ...). I even give it to my dogs and cats now!
By the way, Dr. Lawrence (on of the authors) is the doctor of the famous actor James Coburn. Mr. Coburn now attributes his recovery from crippling arthritis pain to benefits derived from MSM.

That's where this handy tome comes in. One of the girls from the bar I've been seeing on the sly has been trying to get me to start incorporating more vegetables in our relationship (in addition to the meat) and suggested several books (not this one) to help me get started. While those books had some value, this book really told me what I needed to know about the nutritional values of various vegetarian diets and how to make up for the nutirtion I would be losing by giving up meat.
It's very informative, well-written, easy to understand, but somewhat short on recipes. As I've mentioned, Bessie isn't a very good cook--even when she has cook-by-numbers recipes (which basically means, even if this book had recipes it wouldn't be of much value to her) and that's too bad. Nevertheless, this is a very informative book and has surprisingly convinced me that it is possible to maintain nutrition while maintaining an all-vegie diet. Unfortunately, the recipes in this book (and those I found in several others) have failed to convince me that any of these vegie diets taste any better than the leaves and grass in my backyard.
As a result, I've scrapped the vegetarian route, started cooking for myself, stopped worrying about my health, and I'm staying away from the girls at the bar.

After reading this book with an open mind, (keep in mind I had to get past my bad habit of criticizing), I realized the countless dollars tax payers could save just by collectively learning to think through a vegan paradigm of non-violence. This book has answered so many of my most burning questions. I feel like I can move on now to live my life with such a remarkable understanding of what's going on here!
I love how this book defines the word "veganism" as intended by the man who came up with the word in 1944. This definition is on page 27, and when you read it, regardless of what you eat presently, you will likely find yourself thinking "That's me; I am that way."
