I have extremely high cholesterol hereditarily. When my doctor and I decided one last try at getting it down through diet,
my husband grimaced. (I had been put on straight tuna once and he wasn't looking forward to this!) When I made the first
meal from this book, all he could say was, "Wow, it actually tastes wonderful!" But, when I made the chocolate chip cookies,
he actually said they were the best he's ever had! We have now made several of the recipes, including the homemade tortilla
chips, and have loved each one. This is my FAVORITE low-fat cookbook ever! I just wish they'd come out with another one.
One of my favorite low-fat cookbooks

Most low-fat cookbooks contain lots and lots of recipes of food you'd never actually eat. And if you would try it, your kids
definitely wouldn't. I like this one, because it has great recipes that even your kids will eat. It also has a basic primer
in the front about nutrition and losing weight. Maybe I should get this one out again and review it!

Excellent resource for cuisines of Caribbean Latino population

Review Date: 2008-07-29
Beyond Rice and Beans focuses on the Caribbean Latino population, composed of individuals from Puerto Rico, the Dominican
Republic, Cuba, and countries in Central and South America.
The book is written in both English and Spanish and begins with a simple overview of meal planning, discussing the differences between the types of carbohydrates and suggested serving sizes. Most helpful is a deeper explanation of the different cuisines of the Caribbean. Each section includes frequently asked questions, the most prominent foods included in each cuisine, and tips to reduce the fat and calories in many of the dishes highlighted.
The book also includes practice exercises to further understand the information discussed. The chapter titled "Putting Together Your Meal Plan" includes examples of how to individualize a meal plan by allowing the reader to participate in choosing what he or she already eats and incorporating it into a new meal plan.
The book is filled with helpful lists and tables of common foods eaten in the regions, utensils used in a Latin kitchen, and a practical list of what to do during holidays and special occasions. There are several chapters that described the fruits and vegetables of the Caribbean. The author describes the foods in great detail, giving pronunciation where applicable, providing some historical background about the food, and listing health tips as well as stories of when she lived in Cartagena, Columbia. The book includes a very personal touch, which makes it very easy to read, and the information is well researched and includes very practical information regarding the use of the foods and where to find them.
This is a wonderful book that provides excellent information regarding the many cuisines of the Caribbean Latino population for those who are already part of it or for those who want to learn more about it.

A 'Big Book' That's Big On Low-Carb

The Big Book Of Low-Carb is a book ready-made for low-carbers
Low-carb living need not be boring or even arduous when you know that there are virtually millions of ways to combine various ingredients to present the ultimate in low-carb dining. The opportunities are endless and can even be fun when you learn to start cooking this way all the time as part of your healthy lifestyle. Regardless of which low-carb plan you are following, there's a recipe for you to make and enjoy in The Big Book Of Low-Carb.
That's what co-authors Kitty Broihier, a registered dietician, and Kimberly Mayone, a recipe development consultant, wanted to acheive in this book of theirs. Loading it up with 250 recipes that are easy-to-make as well as entertaining to make and eat. The Big Book Of Low-Carb will certainly change the way you think about low-carb.
Broihier and Mayone admit up front that they wanted to offer a wide variety of options for low-carbers on every level from the "newbie" all the way to the "old pro" veterans who have been eating this way for years. The Big Book Of Low-Carb delivers with exquisite dishes that will get you out of your "low-carb rut" and will instead "keep you noshing happily on your low-carb program" forever.
Before you get to experience their amazing recipes, Broihier and Mayone provide some low-carb "basics" to help get you started off on the right foot. These helpful tips are there to give you guidance that could prove crucial as you prepare to become the king or queen of your low-carb cooking domain. Don't just foolishly skip over this part of the book because there are some really good techniques that frankly I hadn't even thought about before.
The authors also explain the definition of some popular low-carb cooking lingo that some people may not be aware of such as "resting foods," "net carbs," and the various kinds of portions. If you're gonna make these fine recipes, then you had better know what the authors are talking about ahead of time.
If your kitchen lacks the necessary tools to work with, then you might find yourself in a pinch when the book asks you to grate, whisk, or roll something. Not to worry because they help you out by sharing with you all the equipment and tools you will need to make these delighful recipes.
More importantly, they also explain what the basic foods are that you will want to keep on hand to make your low-carb cooking experience the best it can possibly be, including specific pantry items, refrigerated items, produce, meat and other necessary low-carb recipe essentials. Never start a recipe without knowing you have these items on hand. What a travesty that would be! :)
For all you cooking novices out there, The Big Book Of Low-Carb also includes a tutorial on various techniques that will help you along as you make these recipes. This section can also serve as a refresher course for you veterans who may not remember what it means to shock your vegetables, parboil your sausages, or zest those citrus fruits.
Once you start cooking, though, you'll feel right at home with these recipes and will soon make them a regular part of your favorite family times together. Whether it is breakfast, lunch, dinner, side dishes, salads, grilling, desserts and even beverages, The Big Book Of Low-Carb has it all for you and so much more.
I was really impressed with the layout of the book with the recipes all-encompassed on one page each with a creative description featuring specific hints for that recipe, a clear listing of the ingredients in red alongside the directions, as well as the complete nutritional content and serving size of the recipes at the bottom of the page.
However, except for the front cover of the book, there are no pictures of the finished recipes for you to see what your masterpiece low-carb creations will look like. But that just means you will be in for a BIG surprise (and a good one at that!) when you see how these recipes turn out. That's the fun part about making recipes like these and you should look forward to making each of these recipes for yourself. Don't be afraid to try a recipe you've never done before because Broihier and Mayone make it so simple for you to look like you've cooked this way for years.
The Big Book Of Low-Carb is one of those rare books that people who are genuinely livin' la vida low-carb NEED to have in their kitchen. My philosophy is this: you can NEVER have too many low-carb recipes! ENJOY!

Fertile Prayers: Daily Fertile Prayers
This is not a new book, but it may be the most important book for people interested in surviving during drought, during nuclear war, or during famine (think food rationing). Recipes, poetry, beautiful art, science from a grad of Stanford University, and the co-author born soon after WWII in Japan. A peaceful gift to the world. A truly good beginning to kudzu research.

should that be reductive? One of the best parts is how it addresses the psychology behind weight loss. Buy this, read it,
follow it, and watch the pounds melt away. Phenomenal!

A few months ago, I hosted Dr. Barry Simon, co-author of "Break The Weight Loss Barrier" in my Power-Surge.com Web site and
community on America Online. Simon's book is one of the most straightforward, readable, understandable books on the subject
of weight loss and the myriad ways in which we sabotage ourselves from getting in shape.
One of the audience said, "I found Dr. Simon's philosophy to be very motivating as I know I need to get off my "duff," quit making excuses for myself, and get some exercise!"
I agree. His suggestions regarding "inner conversations" we have with ourselves was very enlightening -- the ways in which we sabotage ourselves again and again in order to avoid succeeding. We all have emotional baggage we carry around and try to adjust in whatever way we can.
If you're interested not simply in losing weight, getting back into shape, but understanding the many roadblocks you create in order to avoid doing so, you'll benefit greatly from Dr. Barry Simon and Dr. Jim Meschino's "Break The Weight Loss Barrier." In fact, I utilized their suggestions and recently shed 20 pounds of unwanted weight -- with no excuses thanks to this excellent book!

A beautiful little book that has an immediate calming effect. Packed with lots of useful and inspirational quotes, Calm Eating
refocuses our attitudes to food and eating into more positive and healthy ones. I loved the fact that I could pick this book
up and turn it to any page just to have a quick reminder that my relationship with food really can be a good one. The book
is divided into various topics such as "true beauty", "natural eating" and "feeding your soul", and the quotes are wonderful
- wise & compassionate with a dash of humour. This is a lovely little book and I highly recommend it to everyone.

As a nutritionist, I am delighted to find a book about eating that can be of enormous help to readers. I will definitely
recommend Calm Eating to my patients who are striving to develop a balance between nutrition knowledge and what they want.
Dr. Kausman motivates readers to make good choices and to enjoy food without guilt -- key ingredients in successful weight
management. The book is of particular interest to those who have spent too many years dieting and too few years maintaining
an optimal weight.

I bought this book as a gift for my parents-- my father recently having had a valve replacement unexpectedly. They have found
the cookbook useful, easy, and worthwhile. They certainly don't fit in the "leisure time chef" category but found the cookbook
useful and enjoyable.
Eating food that's good for you can be quite frustrating if you haven't learned to be and cook healthy your entire life. This helped.

I found this wonderful, fantastic, blessed, life changing book while researching the ingredients in a "Fat Burner" food
supplement that I had bought. That supplement seemed to begin working the first day, and I wanted to know more about the
ingredients in it. What I found out was that Carnitine was the magic ingredient, and is extremely important for
all of the functions of the body; loosing weight was a byproduct of a much improved metabolism; aging is somewhat determined
by it; many diseases are correlated to lack of this substance. One of my best friends is a professional nutritionist;
she went into all of her old textbooks with a skeptical eye, but determined that this book had collected information
that was extremely important to everyone. You can buy this book for about $5 and learn information that hundreds of dollars
of textbooks might have on this subject, and probably live a longer healthier life for it. My energy level and sports performance
has also improved greatly. I have since ordered many copies to give to family, friends and acquaintances. You better
leave a day to read it because you won't be able to put it down. Don't order one, order ten!
