I have diabetes all over in my family, so I was NOT surprised when my doc decided to assume I had gestational diabetes right from the start of my pregnancy.

However, both my mom and her dad don't take good care of themselves, so I didn't have any good role models for what I should be eating. I knew what NOT to eat...but not what I should focus on instead.

The nurse that spoke with me (NOT a nutritionist) was way off in her diet recommendations, this book helped me eat again! I sat and read it in just a few days, it has great advice and was easy to understand. I don't generally use it as a reference, but I'm glad I read it early on.

When I heard the dreaded words-"YOU HAVE DIABETES"-it rocked my world. I was so frightened. I never expected it,I was floored. I found myself in a position where I didn't know what to eat. I knew NOTHING about diabetes. First thing I did was look for books on Amazon so I could educate myself as soon as possible. I never knew this was such a complex illness. This book helped me tremendously to understand how to eat. I was used to Weight Watchers and counting points but knew nothing about carbs and sugars and all the other things on the labels. I knew Amazon would have the right book for me. Thank you again for your help in getting me on the right trail to healthy eating. Although I have a difficult road ahead of me this book is the first step to understand what path to take.

Few days ago, my doctor told me I had diabetes and to watch what I eat. On my way home I decided to stop by at the bookstore to see if they had some type of information to provide more light on the subject. Others could have diabetes, but not me. I was in shock! On the shelf there was Elaine Magee's book. I bought it. Within 2 days I read it all. Found so many answers in it. Answers I could understand. Recipes I could use. Very helpful informations.

A Deeper Look at Health and Weight Loss

Review Date: 2003-10-30
Usually when I read a diet book I go straight for what you can eat and what you can't eat. This book I read from cover to cover. In reading Carson Burke's engaging, well-researched book my attitude and belief system toward food changed. Using a compelling historical perspective Carson Burke explains how our well-being cannot be compartmentalized but requires addressing our entire mind, body and spirit. This holistic approach unlocks the key to healthy, sustained, successful dieting. Although the book addresses obesity in particular I feel it is a wonderful guide for anyone who wants a more vital, healthier life. By following Carson Burke's Principles and Practices healthy choices become internalized. I am able to take a deeper look at myself and at my relationship to food and it's true purpose as nourishment. THIN LIES WITHIN teaches "mindfulness" which is a very liberating tool and can become natural in the journey of self-awareness and weight control. No need to feel guilt here.
Carson Burke suggests, "Each of us can cultivate the positive attitude, virtuous habits, and full potential that we desire by making a deliberate effort to hold affirmative qualities, traits, and behaviors in our conscious mind."

This book is full of common sense and good advice. It combines solid writing, an eclectic and scientifically-sound nutritional approach and a spiritual approach that really cuts through the barrage of diet and weight loss nonsense out there.

I recommend it highly. The author knows what she is talking about and how to get her points across. I am glad I bought it.

This book is not only weight changing but life changing!

Not just another diet book - it is the first book to deal with weight holistically. The focus is mind, body, spirit. This holistic focus helped me become aware of my own self-limiting beliefs which were key for me in finally sticking with a program. I learned to eat differently - not to deprive myself. I lost 85 pounds using this program and even ran the Chicago Marathon this year!

I was impressed enough when Gormley came out a landmark book on DHA in 1999, but was equally impressed when he came out with this book, the most-concise, best-researched, most practical and powerful consumer book on brain-boosting I have ever read--and there are a number out at this point. Bravo!

I bought this book because I've been having a few senior moments (even though I'm not a senior!) I really liked it because it wasn't too technical and was easy to read. I like that the authors make recomendations for things to take and what they are. I recomend this book to anyone looking to boost their memory!

The authors do a superb job of identifying the how to get the most from your mind. Their suggestions are practical and effective.

I would only caution people to be very careful where you source the recommended supplements. A supplement retailer with more than 4-5 suppliers cannot keep up with the latest innovations. Snake-oil abounds. RelentlessImprovement.com is fast, professional, and offers only pharmaceutical quality fully tested supplements.

Be the best you can be, let this book help you.

Greatest Food and Health Book

I have always considered myself a healthy eater but until I read "What to Eat for What Ails You" by Ms. Yu, I did not realize that what I was eating was not always healthy depending on my condition/illness. This book has changed my eating habits and I feel heatlhier and happier -- more energy. I am constantly referring to its pages for guidance in what to eat to help me overcome/feel better. What I especially like about the book is that it not only tells you what to eat for a particular ailment but defines what the ailment is and what the symptons are. Ms Yu does so in "layman's" terms so even myself, a self admitted non-medical person, fully understands without referring to a medical dictionary. I also like the tidbits on what to avoid eating for a particular ailment -- just as important as what to eat. Her strategies on staying healthy are very enlightening and well worth following. Overall, I find this one of the best resource books I or anyone could own. I highly recommend it to everyone of all ages and lifestyles.

Yu's book is wonderfully helpful, user-friendly, well-organized, clear & concise. The book presents the reader with almost 100 medical conditions and provides information on what the ailment looks like, what to eat, what not to eat, and strategies for staying healthy. For me, the most exciting aspect of the book is that I can use it in tandum with B.K.S. Iyengar's book, Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health, which gives me poses (asanas) to do for a particular medical condition/problem to relieve/remedy a problem. Yu hit the nail on the head with this book and is to be complemented. Simply put, this book is easy to use, easy to understand and easy to implement...the kind of book that I will reference often!

Finally! A guide to eating that really helps you feel better!

I've read a number of nutrition, health and wellness books, but this one is a top-notch publication for a number of reasons. For one, it's well-organized and easy to follow. Numerous conditions and ailments are listed, followed by recommendations on what you can do to improve it. Yu solicits input from respected professionals, not the fly-by-night infomercial "experts" that you see on TV.

What I found especially encouraging is that the improvements the author recommends are not hard to implement. I realized as I read this that sometimes just minor adjustments to my diet, like adding a little less salt, reducing my portion sizes, or substituting fruit for a snack in place of junk food can lead to tremendous improvements in how I feel and my overall energy levels! I've only just begun to make some of these changes, and I already feel like I have more energy than I've had in years!

Yu deserves a lot of credit for presenting sound information and educating the reader, and most importantly putting within our grasp the changes that can lead to significant health and wellness improvements. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel and live better!

It's amazing how much people tend to neglect their teeth. Oh, plenty of people brush and floss, and visit their dentist. However, many people, even in this rather health-conscious society of ours, don't realize how much more there is to taking care of their mouths. Gum disease is incredibly prevalent and surprisingly detrimental to human health. Its effects on the human body can be more widespread than many people realize. In general, many dentists simply aren't interested in keeping people informed about what is needed to maintain their teeth and gums. Mr. Snape explores in depth what is necessary to keep one's gums and teeth healthy. He explains various diseases of the mouth, methods of treatment and prevention, and even provides excellent information on choosing medical care. A great deal of thought and research went into this book, and it is put together in clear and concise language. Gum disease isn't a particularly fun topic to read about. However, it is an important one, and David Snape provides an excellent guide to learning more about taking care of one's oral health.

It is hard to write a book. It takes courage to question the advice of health professionals. David has achieved his task with balance and dignity. He has created an interesting and readable book and explained ways to improve oral health.
David clearly describes the problems of leaving dental disease untreated and answers many questions. David describes options and explains how sometimes these are not given to patients. I am sure that there will be more books like his in the future, but I congratulate David for being the author of the first.

It covers in detail everything from gum disease to bad breathe and their related causes and other health effects. David Snape guides you through the best solutions for true dental health and how to talk to your dental health professional. Invaluable information in a well-organized format. This is not a diet book rather a tool to let you understand and choose what weight you want to be. I have a collection of perhaps 4-5 books and relative diets I have tried unsuccessfully and here I find something that actually works in a very different way, and it has not been difficult in the least.
The title is embarrassing, I must admit, and they could have chosen a color that doesn't stand out so much! But at the end of the day the author Zoe has done a great service - she herself having gone through many diets and finally realizing that we have to look at food disorders/obesity as a more complex process in which a lot of what you do is actually chemical process inside us which create addictions.

Really a great book.

Forget hyperbole. This book isn't a diet book, it's an explanation of how to change what's going on inside your body. Simple and easy to follow and remember eating rules. Understanding what's going on inside your body is a tremendous psychological boost to making good choices. It isn't preachy and actually works.

This book is the first that I've ever read that finally tackles the questions about WHY you overeat and then gives sound, simple and practical advise on how to overcome your food cravings and lose weight quickly and safely. The author does this by tackling the three main conditions that will cause you to overeat.

Zoe's 'eating plan' (diet) is very practical, easy to follow and works - in the short and long term. I found it easy to lose weight and keep it off. I have recommended the book to many people and they've all found the diet easy to follow and they've all lost weight by following it.

There are very few rules to follow which makes it simple to understand and keep to. If you've ever suffered from being overweight or have uncontrollable food cravings, this book is for you. If you have to wait too long here, get a copy from the official website whydoyouovereat.com

I love my county! But never in a millions years would I have believed that THIS type of Political "BOO Caca" would be happening in the United States of America. "Why is America so Fat" very carefully outlines the GREED of the Pharmaceutical Companies and how they have put their profits before the health of American Citizens. The very reason Americans are so fat is because of the Pharmaceutical Industry and now with the Ephedra Band they have just made matters 10 fold worse than it was before. This book tells the shocking Truth. Ben Kennedy has done a tremendous amount of interesting research that is easy to follow and fun to read. Get this book, read it and send a copy to all your friends and your congressman. This should not be happening in our country and if we let it happen, my fear is what will they do next!

We all knew that the Ephedra ban was about money and Why is America So Fat? lays out this terrible story of greed and corruption in a manner that is easy to understand. I take my hat off to author Ben Kennedy for having the guts to tell it like it is. I hope this book sells a million copies so that everyone will know how we have been lied to by the FDA. I never stopped to think about drug companies being behind the ban but after seeing the evidence it all makes sense. Then theres all the drugs that make people fat. These people have a real scam going so there is no wonder there are so many fat people out there. Bravo Ben for exposing these evil people.

The real reason so many people are fat!

We have been hearing all this crap about lack of exercise and poor diet for at least 20 to 30 years. IT IS GREAT THAT SOMEONE FINALLY TELLS IT LIKE IT IS.

The list of drugs that make you fat is worth the price of the book alone. I am going to make my doctor change my medication and hopefully I can get rid of this gut.

What a outrage to find out that something that I was taking to help improve my health was actually making me gain weight.

Thanks for opening my eyes.

As the first-time parent of a 17 month old child, I'm no stranger to nutritional eating for adults, but absolutely clueless as to the same for children... especially for the most finicky child (MINE!). This book helped to explain methodology of eating, essential childhood vitamins and nutrients, and age by age explanations of eating behavior and nutrition. I bought a few other children's nutrition books along with this one (such as the one from American Academy of Pediatrics), and I definitely found this one the most helpful. The chapter format allows you to read only the chapters that pertain to your child. Complete with recipes! I have yet to try them, but they look delicious.

Excellent reference for parents and childcare workers.

This is the BEST, most effective detox/cleanse plan I have ever tried. I have been using this little book for the last ten years. By Day 6 or 7 I am feeling fabulous and by day 9 and 10 truly great. I lose weight yes, but it helps me get back on track from too many dinners out or travelling. I love the body brushing which really makes me feel like I am detoxing my entire body. I have been to Canyon Ranch which is wonderful but this book can do the same as 10 days there.

This book is so inspiring, I love it. It makes more sense than any other detox plan I know. The sept by step, and day by day instructions make it very easy to follow. You feel great afterward and feel back on track. The last time I went on the clean up plan (two weeks ago) I lost 9 pounds of rubbish from my body. Thank you Leslie Kenton.

This is an excellent book and a "must read" for everyone who has diabetes or who plans meals/shops/cooks for people with diabetes. I am a registered dietitian who works in an endocrine clinic and I also have a private nutrition practice. I recommend this book to all of my patients/clients with diabetes. So many people with diabetes think in terms of can't eat this or can't eat that. It's time to think about what you can eat as well as debunk the myth once and for all that people with diabetes can't eat any sugar. This book was updated in 2007 and contains everything you need to know to eat well to manage diabetes. Also covered in the book are the lastest summary recommendations of the American Diabetes Association's 2006 updated medical nutrition therapy guidelines.

" Must reading" for all diabetics and those that love them.
