I love being able to actually see the evolution of a plant food from its beginnings, all the way to my plate. This book is a fantastic resource for plant foods and full of thorough information. Love it!

The original edition of this book was out of print for some years and it is delightful to see it out again, and expanded no less. It combines 2 great virtues: highly readable and informative text with illustrations of a quality that are "suitable for framing." It is a great book for anyone who takes an interest in botany, cooking, or gardening and you couldn't go wrong giving it as a gift to one of these types. It's also great for reference. If you're getting it as a gift I suggest ordering 2, because you'll want one for yourself when you see it.

Excellent for learning about food plants from all over.

This book is great for learning to identify food plants from all over the world. The illustrations are realistic and each plant is described. I use it to help my 4-H horticulture judging team prepare for the national judging contest. The plants and illustrations in this new edition are the same as in the original book, however the 1998 edition has an excellent section on phytonutrients.

Although I have read a great deal about nutrition, after reading raw energy I now know the value of eating foods in their natural state. I have used the information in this book to improve my energy, health, muscular endurance and muscular strength. I loved it and will continue to use the information to live healthfully for many more years.

This book is the Health Bible & should be in every school!

This book illuminates the fact that the enzymes present only in raw foods are @ least as important as vitamins & minerals in the maintenance of optimum human health. This well-documented work not only reminds us that man is the only animal which cooks it's food but that cooked food is a cultural perversion & an addiction which may actually be injurious to health. The authors delightful writing style informs w/o intimidating the reader w/ medico-chemical jargon. While some critics might label this book "controversial", such claims would be found baseless under the cold, hard light of logic.

i am just amazed. what a monumental task for a doctor to sit down and just write. i am 58 year old female, i consider myself educated, and up to date with all the medical reports about food and health issues. we eat generally what is considered to be very healthy food. i have had problems with my waight since i turned 40. i have tried many diets, they all work, just for a while and than you gain all that you lost and then some.this book gave me the knowlege, and tools to deal with my waight issues, not just words. since i started reading the book i have lost just about 10 pounds, my energy levels have gone up, and i am getting a lot of complements as to how rested i look!!!!!!!!!

This book is really different. It was an easy read, not a slog, and I really learned a lot. Most of the ideas I had about weight loss principles were kind of vague. This book actually clarified things for me.

I've never read a diet book that gave practical suggestions about how to go about changing my eating habits. This one is full of practical help, for example the idea of collecting neighborhood menus and pre-selecting items so that when I'm in a rush, I can order super fast or have someone else do it for me. That way I can bring food to meetings and not wait until I'm starving when the meetings are finally over.

Reading this book has made me realize that losing weight actually might be possible!

A novel and clever diet book!

Dr. Lang has found a charming way to explain scientifically how your metabolism can work for and against you. Written as a breezy novel she has skillfully broken down the workings of why diets do and don't work. She includes a plan that guarantees results by encouraging you to change ineffective eating habits and replace them with a better way of eating and living as well. The book is a blend of science and human behavior and causes you to really look at how you are living. She takes the iron fist in velvet glove approach and doesn't scold for mistakes but firmly encourages success. A must read for anybody who craves intelligent advice on creating new, better informed lifestyle choices.

This is the practical guide I've been waiting for and unable to find. Why hasn't somebody written this book before? It's essentially a user's manual for the human body. The tables alone are well worth the price of the book. In addition, every word in this elegantly written book is as carefully-chosen and nutrient-dense as the foods Dr. Margel recommends. Finally, we can easily understand not just what to eat, but why our body needs what it needs. Plus, the step-by-step plan allows one to start right where one is and set realistic, achievable goals. I'll recommend this valuable guide to all. Bravo!

Doug Margel's book is a "must read" for people trying to make sense out of the piles of information (and mis-information) in the field of nutrition. This book is chock-full of insights and common, practical wisdom without the hype. I highly recommend this book to everyone, particularly if your searching for a guide that can help you restore yourself back to a healty balance.

Doug makes it fun and compelling and relaxed to explore nutrient dense eating. I've been moving in that direction for ~ 6 months and feel great. This is important information that everyone should have and it's presented intelligently and lightly. Lots of information and a great reference guide to refer back to again and again.

The book is short because Barnard has spared us anecdotes, padding, and lengthy but irrelevant personal testimony. This book gets down to brass tacks immediately, is clearly presented, and makes total sense. I'm impressed not only by the book but also by the success of the method and its common-sense simplicity. Highly recommended.

1 OF THE 2 BEST WEIGHT LOSS BOOKS! EVER!!

Review Date: 2008-02-27
I make no secret that the 25 pound weight loss I experienced without counting a single calorie or EVER being hungry (cuz humans are not supposed to be hungry if they can eat right) came from reading and following this book. It's easy, cheap, and you feel great! Much easier than a bi-pass (geriatric or cardiac), insulin or amputation for diabetes, and chemo for cancer...diseases that can be caused and/or worsened by obesity. This book, and the Maximum Weight Loss Plan by Dr. John McDougall are the best kept secrets, IMHO. These docs aren't on the take from any company or industry and are sincere about helping hundreds of thousands over the years, for free because they care. They have no money-guzzling supplements or products or scams. Have seen many lose incredible amounts of weight using these two books. Even if you do not have a "weight problem," this book deserves a place on every person's bookshelf. The concepts and ideas in this book are not new, although they will certainly be new to many; some may even find them "radical." Dr. Barnard advocates a vegetarian diet in order to stay healthy and at a desirable weight. If you follow the advice in this book, you will undoubtedly lose weight and look and feel MUCH better than you ever have. The truth is that most people eat food that does not promote health or a good weight. Dr. Barnard shows you how you can eat foods that are good for you, foods that will make you feel good, and in the process, you will lose weight and keep it off. This is not a "diet" in the sense that you must restrict your calories. This is a diet in the sense that you make intelligent, sensible food choices, EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT, and lose weight without ever feeling hungry. It's true! After eating the way that Dr. Barnard recommends in this book (no animal products), I lost ten pounds in several weeks, and I have kept those pounds off, without ever feeling hungry. I eat as much as I want, and I don't gain weight. Try it out for yourself, and see that it works. If you don't see a change after trying this book out, write me an email and tell me what happened. I have many good tips for eating this way.

I have actually only made one recipe from this book, but it is so delicious it it a constant standby on my fall and winter dining room table. It is braised red cabbage which sounds rather boring, but with this recipe, it becomes really wonderful. I have never had red cabbage in any restaurant that tastes this good. I always wanted to try other things, but unfortunately (or fortunately for me) I have too many cookbooks and magazines to contend with and get easily distracted.

Pierre Franey takes you all over Europe to 1, 2 or 3 Michelin starred Chefs, and actually cooks with them to create low fat recipes, or use some that they have already. You will not be sorry.

The Big Picture

Well worth reading if you want to understand how our society conspires to make us all over-fat and unfit. Direct, uncompromising, and humourous, Susan bursts the balloons of the food and fitness industries and shows how it's possible for anyone - no matter how unfit they are - to take control of their own health.

I'd advise reading this to inspire yourself towards wellness (and it is inspiring, considering Susan lost 130lbs and has kept it off for 20 years) and then, if you want some practical information about how to ACTUALLY DO IT - get Covert Bailey's "Ultimate Fit or Fat". These two books together are ALL you'll ever need to know. The Ultimate Fit or Fat

I see no one else said anything yet but something has to be said. This book is ... it's exactly what I needed to know to get healthier. This book tells you the basics you need to do and know. It's not a restrictive diet book. It's what you have to know/do to lead a healthier life. And what you have to do is not difficult AT ALL. It's not a exercise book or a cookbook. But you do have to exercise and you do have to eat better. And you have to think and boy does she give you lots to think about.

I took the class that used this book last semester, and I really love this book. It's easy to read (although at times it goes into a little too much detail), doesn't sugar-coat anything, has great pictures, and has labs at the end of each chapter to help you apply the information. From proper nutrition to cancer prevention to strength training to STD prevention, this book has it all covered. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in health.
