This is a great book. I had already done a lot of research online and by going to seminars, and I still learned a lot from this book! The author presents the information in "chronological order" - and covers what you'll need to know about the standard pre-op processes, the surgery itself, the recovery time, and then the rest of your life. And everything in between too! There are even sample diets for what to eat in the weeks after surgery.

Each of the sections is highlighted by personal stories from others who have experienced what he is talking about. They make the book easy to read and you will look forward to seeing what some other "real person" experienced. There are also highlights from psychologists and others who give a good perspective for why the process works how it does.

You will learn a lot from this book and it gives you some good perspective for the whole pre-op process. For the money, this is a great bet! It's easy to read and you won't regret it.

The Eating Plan That Replaces Dieting Forever!

Review Date: 1998-03-05
Mary & I were introduced to the Zone when on March 31,1997 Mary's Doctor gave her a prescription which read,"Get & read a book called the Zone". When I discovered that our county Library system had 82 people on a waiting list for their 22 copies I went to a local book store where I found 2 Zone books both on the Top 10 list, #6 & #9 I bought both books and went home. After about 2 hours of reading in "Mastering The Zone" I did 3 things: 1.From the more than 150 scientific zone recipes I chose 7 which appealed to both my wife and I and using the ingredients from these 7 recipes created my new grocery shopping list. 2.I boxed up all the food in our house that failed the zone test and gave it away, which was 95% of it 3.I then went shopping with our newly designed grocery list. On April 8,1997 We entered the Zone and and by the end of April Mary had lost 11 lbs and I had lost 11 lbs plus 4" off my 42" waist. The lbs and inches lost were nothing new as we had both done that dozens and dozens of times over the past 30 or more years, but we both lost something this time that we had never ever lost before, our cravings for food and the greatest part of what we feel was at least a small miracle was that we lost our cravings for food the very first day in the Zone. Two examples: Mary dropped excessive coffee drinking that very day and I dropped excessive mayonnaise eating also the very first day. As we say,"No desire for it so why drink it or eat it?" And we don't miss it nor do we feel the slightest bit deprived. Within less than 90 days I had lost 25 lbs and my 42" waist had slimmed down to 32" where it has remained.Mary has been consistently losing 6-8 lbs a month. IT'S TRUE: STAY IN THE ZONE and you will: A.Think better, because in the zone you are maintaining stable blood sugar levels. B.Perform better, because being in the zone allows you to increase oyxgen transfer to your muscle cells. C. Look better, because in the Zone you are shedding excess body fat at the fastest possible rate. D. Never be hungry between meals, because staying in the Zone means your brain is being constantly supplied with it's primary fuel, blood sugar. E. Never have to experience that stuffed, overeating feeling again, because in the Zone there is never a need to over eat, because hormonally balanced eating completely satisfies your body with less food, and F. Every bite you eat tastes better when you are in the Zone, because that's just the way it is when the food your body is getting is balanced hormonally. We don't understand it but we love the results. Living in the Zone is Fun...Easy...And You will love it and never will you be able to keep it to yourself!

Barry Sears has created a common sense approach to properly balancing your diet. I personally have lost 50 lbs using the Zone and highly recommend it in all of my lectures and seminars. Following the Zone will allow you to feel invigorated, have more energy, sleep more peacefully, and, most importantly, improve your health. This book is an excellent review of the newest technology in eating. Dr. Sears explains how to eat and why. His explaination of how food affects your body is an explanation of human physiology than anyone can understand. I recomend it to my friends, patients and colleagues almost daily. Jason N. Cox M.D

Barry Sears' milestone publication is more interesting than any diet book I've ever read. I admit to a bias--it is also the most effective diet I have ever tried! I recall Martin Katahn's books ("The Rotation Diet" and "The T-Factor Diet") fondly, but Sears' style is really more to my taste, my 20-pound weight loss notwithstanding. Dr. Sears explains the dietary regimen of balanced protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake in as much detail as you can stand, but if you just want a jump-start on increased energy and weight loss, he directs you to the "How To" chapter early in the work. I got right on the diet, as recommended by a friend, but went back to peruse the research which led to the findings, and found it very readable, even for a layman. The book includes a few recipes, but the dominant strategy is to discover for yourself what a balanced, energy-efficient diet is all about. As you might guess, I love the diet--I've lost weight steadily without changing my sedentary lifestyle, and I've also managed to curtail my 10-cup/day coffee habit to an occasional cup (i.e., two or three per *week*). The best part is that I was able to refer back to the book to find out why things were working out so well (or when they weren't). I recommend this book to everyone who ever wondered why they fall asleep after lunch, or why they aren't losing weight on a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet.

Like almost everyone else these days, I'm trying to eat right and stay healty. Thanks to this great book, I'm finding it easier to cook low fat meals. This book offers over 1000 low fat soup and stew recipes such as, chowders, different chilis, vegetarian soups, soups made out of fruit, seafood chowder, and my favorite chicken stew. Aside from the american recipes, this book contains popular recipes from countries such as, Asia, the Caribbean, Africa and Europe. The recipes are very detailed and easy to follow. For good tasting and healthy soup recipes, this is definately the book!

Even if the recipes weren't low-fat, I would still enthusiastically recommend this cookbook. I have yet to try a recipe out of this cookbook that hasn't been a breeze to prepare and also tastes wonderful.

Who cares if it is low-fat? It won't occur to you as you try the various soups and stews. Simply enjoy it for the delicious meal that it truly is.

i really love this book, it's a very fun read and quite informative. Every morning I follow her recipe for the "green drink". It's one cup of pineapple juice, 1 cup (ish) of raw spinach leaves and 1/2 of raw curly parsley, then in a blender on high till smooth. It is so incredibly yummy - it basically just tastes like pineapple and parsley. SOOOO good for you. I will drink one every morning for the rest of my life. Thanks Lalitha! Most of us who want to improve our health can benefit from Lalitha's entertaining, friendly, non-technical explanations of why we should incorporate these ten foods (or their substitutes) into our diet. She doesn't preach, but writes from an ordinary person's perspective. Her passion for health is obvious and I found it inspiring. Plenty of practical tips for using the ten foods, a few recipes, lots of good references and anecdotes about her experiences. An enjoyable, educational experience. Lalitha is not a doctor or scientist and tells you up front where she is coming from -- a refreshing book of common-sense advice!

Dr. Weisman's diet is the answer for me! It doesn't require portion measurement and is quite satisfying! I've lost weight on conventional low calorie diets but I've really suffered.

I've known Dr. Weisman for most of my life. He is my friend's dad and is oh so brilliant. I am so excited to see that he has written a diet book. I just saw him the other day, after years and years, and he looked so thin. (And had a great haircut, too.) As soon as I finish writing this little review, I will buy this book. He looks fabulous. I can't wait to look fabulous myself.

Harry Weisman is an endocrinologist who has finally published his long awaited contribution for patients suffering from obesity, thereby opening his ideas to a wider audience. His approach is different to conventional medical thinking however it works!. As an interventional neurologist I see many patients with back pain herniated discs and neuropathy from diabetes and obesity.I have applied his principles with great success in my practice as well as on myself (I am diabetic!). His approach is not preachy yet he is fully cognizant of the addictive nature of food cravings. i recommend this book highly. It is readable and well researched.

As with one of the commentators, I too think that Ainsley Harriott is one of the best-if not the best-of the TV chefs. In Australia we are privileged to see him frequently on the ABC and Diane and I are avid watchers. As a result I have purchased all of his cookbooks and because his recipes are so good, these books get a regular workout in our kitchen.

This particular book is perhaps better than Gourmet Express 1 and 2 if only because he has reworked some more familiar recipes and taken the fatter cooking methods or ingrediants out of this collection-the same great tastes are still there but without the fat content. For instance a recipe we have recently tried is his version of "Light and crunchy fish cakes".
Rather than shallow frying them as is traditional, Ainsely bakes them for 30 minutes-fat eliminated, taste remains-simple but effective.

His book is full of these wonderful old and new recipes that he has reworked to eliminate the fats and I believe he has done it wonderfully.

I recommend all his cookbooks!

Finally, low fat doens't equal low taste anymore!

Ainsley has always been my favourite chef, but most of the times, his recipes are dripping with the bad stuff, like fat, butter and chocolate. Being on a diet to loose weight, I have been waiting for ages for him to come with a book on low fat recipes and itr is great! Really tasty foods, dips, desserst, snacks and full meals to make a great impression or to just enjoy yourself, but without the most fattening stuff. You won't loose pounds on end with this book, but it gives you good low fat ideas for a special occasion!

Gourmet greats that happen to be low fat!

I say 'happen to be low fat' because eating these recipes, you don-t feel like you're missing out on the pleasure of eating fine food. All the recipes i-ve tried so far have been terrific (e.g. the bang bang tofu wraps) and the flavors are sophisticated and satisfying. These are recipes you could serve to guests as well. The quantities are in both english/american measurements and metric, full nutritional info is provided and Ainsley provides additional guidance on how to substitute low fat for full fat ingredients. There are many seafood and barbecue recipes included too. Some of the recipes are traditionally English but a wide variety of cuisines are represented (Asian, Indian, Italian, Cajun) I wish this book was even longer! One caveat - many of the foods are quite spicy hot, though sensitive eaters could probably reduce or eliminate some of those ingredients. Brilliant book and I highly recommend it!

Ayurvedic Zone Diet

Review Date: 2008-11-07
Stress, it seems to be something we all have in common these days. Each day, we physically and emotionally push ourselves to the limit. Then, we eat additive filled foods, breathe in stagnant air, and work in unhealthy perhaps even toxic environments. Then, we wonder why we get run down or sick.

At some point, we realize that something has to be done. We start to exercise and look to losing a few extra pounds. Talk about stress, trying to wade through the hundreds of diets on the market to find the right one is quite a challenge. Every diet claims success but what works for one person may not work for other.

Ayurveda is an ancient method that divides people into three types: vata, pitta, and kapha. People with vata characteristics tend to be ectomorphic (delicate, thin, restless, cold hands, etc). On the other extreme is the endomorphic kapha with a large frame, slower, more peaceful person. In between is pitta, mesomorphic with an average frame, moderate weight, and good appetite. Individual typing is defined through comparison of various characteristics and then used to determine the proper nutrition for optimum health.

Dr. Thompson presents an ancient wisdom in an easy to read fashion. His presentation of the material is both insightful, well organized and entertaining. Which is quite a feat given the subject matter he has taken on here! The book includes a concise description of the background needed to understand the premises, a set of questions which gives the reader instant insight into his/her own typology, and suggestions for how to improve the quality of their lives based on that typology. I enjoyed reading the book and look forward to applying its principles in my new quality life!

All I needed was a ratio adjustment

Review Date: 2003-07-15
Traditional Ayurveda teachings are very valuable, and can help you learn a lot about your food choices. However, it really never went into the caloric ratios a certain body type needs to consume to find balance.

I'm a vata-pitta, but primarily a vata. I was following a high carbohydrate, low fat diet, which I read in this book was definitely the wrong thing for a vata to be doing. I needed more fat. 40% of my calories as a matter of fact. I'd tried everything else, so I gave the 40/40/20 ratio a shot. All I can say is, "WOW". Upping my fat intake way the key to finding balance through diet. Not to say everyone should eat 40% of their calories from fat. Only the vata type. The Pitta (or fire) type should eat 50% or more from carbs, 30% protein, and 20% or less from fat.

If I would have read this book 2 years ago, I would have missed out on a lot of unnecessary trial and error. Excellent book!

Reviewed by Carol Hoyer for Reader Views (1/08)

"Be Ye Encouraged!" carries a theme that is not new to most of us -- how to lose weight and become healthier. However, the author Leeda Bacon has the ability to motivate even the most unmotivated dieters by her honesty and stories of her own struggle with weight loss. She does not browbeat individuals for being overweight or pass judgment -- she provides encouragement. Ms. Bacon also gives ample information on how to eat out, cravings and choosing our own lifestyle goals. She states, "What works for me may not work for you."

The beginning of her book asks the readers several questions, such as "Why are you starting this diet in the first place? What is your motivation?" She also lets the readers know that dieting should be for the individual and not for others. She also states one should be comfortable with who they are. Ms. Bacon also affirms that cheating happens and if it does, get right back on track.

One of her comments in the book stated, "I am your cheerleader, this book is for you to pick up when you feel that urge coming on or are feeling down about yourself." I really liked that statement because so many other diet books encourage you to buy their products or books. They also make you feel if you didn't buy them you couldn't lose weight. Ms Bacon doesn't do that.

Anyone who is considering a diet, or are on a diet should read "Be Ye Encouraged!" It is serious but with a very light-hearted tone.

This is a terrific little book of - you guessed it! - Encouragement! We all need that push to keep on our path of eating right, focusing on our spiritual life and sometimes just that 'wake up call' about our life's direction. Leeda's book shows the joy that shines through her in finding that the sensible 'steady as you go' approach to weight loss and eating is the right way we should all approach our lives. I recommend you take that journey with her and see if it doesn't encourage you to approach your lifestyle in a more positive way.

Sophie and Audrey are not the first people to come out with a non-diet approach; in fact, intuitive eating and listening to your body has been advocated for a long time (e.g. Cherie Martin's book "Naturally Slim" from 1995, or any of Geneen Roth's publications, or similar books written by the German psychologist Doris Wolf). However, I really like the no-nonsense and no-pressure approach that these two sisters apply. They say it as it is, and make it easy for readers to identify with the subject matter. Sadly there are no workshops here in the US (yet), but their book finally got through to me and I have at last decided to ditch the diet mentality and to really try and live more intuitively and freely. Thank you so much for the wonderful inspiration!

Very interesting book, but Ann Wigmore books always are. I'm now back to making Rejuvalac, and fermenting vegies. I've bought, since reading the book,
A 5-1/4 gallon new crock, and two one gallon fermenting jars for making pickles and pickled Vegies such as Kim Chee. The book has been an inspiration.

This is the best source of blended juice recipes I've found yet, easy to use and make. Of course the author is famous for curing all types of diseases. I have been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and have been drinking blended juices since I was discharged from a weeks hospital stay. At my 6 week check-up the doctor said I was doing very, very well with a tone of amazement in his voice. He, nor any gastrointerologis, doesn't believe diet has anything to do with this disease, but it does and I will cure it and they will ask me how when they perform a colonoscopy next and I will share my treatment with them. Perhaps if more do this then more doctors will realize the benefits of raw/living eating and start recommending this instead of perscription drugs that do more harm to other vital organs than good! I don't care to live the rest of my life on medications, they just don't taste as good as blended juices or lovely vegetables!
