Finally a book that tells the truth about losing weight and getting healthy. Deep down haven't we always known that most diets don't work because no one diet can work for everybody? Metabolism and lifestyle are as unique as fingerprints. When you understand why you gain weight, it's easier to lose it! I read this book from cover to cover and now I keep it handy in my kitchen for inspiration. The meal plans and recipes are easy to follow. There is even a list of healthy fast food choices. Knowledge is power and this book is empowering!

An excellent aide to help lose weight.

This is a large book filled with lots of information about diet, health issues and dieting. The authors have presented this information in a logical, organized manner. The essence of this particular diet is "balance your carb intake with how active you are" as carbs are necessary for energy and good health.

I can certainly recommend this quality publication to those interested in their health and to those who want to read another book about dieting. The authors have included a 30-day meal plan to assist you in trying their program. It is always interesting to read another diet plan to help us over weight Americans find some balance in our lives.

I have had this book for several years. Some helpful remedies include treating and preventing the Flu. It states that VITAMEN C, GARLIC, TEA AND HOME-MADE CHICK NOODLE SOUP HELP WITH the FLU. I've personally tried the Garlic, and it gets rid of a sore throat almost immediately after eating it. I found out that it has to be fresh garlic, not minced and not flavored with, like powder or salt. I usually eat some garlic pods in my potato soup or fried potatoes when I notice a cold or the flu coming on. Usually the garlic shortens the duration of which the cold would have lasted on anyone else. Like most people will get a cold for 2 weeks, I might have it for 3 days. Also B6 relieves carpal tunnel, migraines, and stress.

It gives not only the name of the vitamin and what it relieves but it also gives the sources of foods that this vitamin is in like VITAMEN E is in asparagus, barley, cherries, nuts and wheat.

As far as KIDNEY STONES which I still had pain after I had them. This book tells you what triggers the pain...which is very nice to know. Stay away from oxalate rich foods-black tea-chocolate-nuts-spinach-strawberries. I've found that Spinach really makes my kidneys hurt and I can only eat it if I drink lots of water with it-to dilute the potency of the oxalates.

This book lists just about every disease or symptom that I can think of. ARTHRITIS-ASTHMA-BLOOD PRESSURE-CANCER-COLDS-CRAMPS-DEPRESSION-DIABETES-EAR INFECTIONS-FATIGUE-GALLSTONES-HEADACHES-HEART DISEASE-INSOMIA-MACULAR DEGENERATION-MENOPAUSE-MIGRANES-OSTEOPOROSIS-ULCERS-URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS-YEAST INFECTIONS-
....................JUST to name a few.

Excellent Resource - I think every book shelf deserves this book!

This book has a compendium of foods for weight loss, cancer
prevention, management of arthritis and a whole host of
health problems too numerous to list here. For instance, Vit. C
levels, Zinc, garlic and produce help with the common cold.
Did you know that olive oil is a good source of Vitamin E?
Foods to control diabetes are noted; such as, multiple servings
of fruits and veggies, high fiber, calcium rich foods and beans.
This book is a solid value for the price charged. It will be a good addition to your personal health library collection.

I purchased Prevention's Your Perfect Weight: The Diet-Free Weight Loss Method By The World's Leading Health Magazine for my mother-in-law. I think it is the perfect gift for the older man or woman. In her case, she wasn't eating enough. We all forget a little as we age so a lesson in proper nutrition could do everyone good. She really loves the book! Being healthy is more important than being rail thin. This is a great book! It is not expensive and would be a good gift for any elderly parent. I can easily give it 5 stars.

Best book that I have. It motivates me and to educates me.

Your Perfect Weight gives you a 52 week planner for your weight loss. Alot of questions that I never thought to ask are answered in this book. It gives charts that are easy to read, examples of how to plan your food each day, and motivative ideas for when you are in the middle of a plateau and not lossing weight. It gives examples of how to change your exercise routine when you get bored, and meal plans for when you are bored of the same foods. This is definitely the best book that I have bought to motivate me and to educate me all at the same time.

Essential reading addressing the long-neglected topic of "Disordered Eating"

This is an extremely well-written, thoroughly researched, and carefully argued work, and the topic is important and has been neglected for far too long. I consider it essential reading for anyone interested in furthering his or her understanding of "Disordered Eating".

Dr Kraatz probably intends for his work to stand on its own, but nevertheless potential readers may be interested in his qualifications as a writer and researcher, so I offer the following: Dr Kraatz holds a BA in Philosophy and Psychology, an MA in Philosophy, and a PhD in Philosophy. He has been a teacher for nearly 18 years, and is currently a Senior Lecturer with the Philosophy Department of Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to his work as an instructor, Dr Kraatz has championed under-represented and disadvantaged groups for many years.

This book is filled with statistics that are actually accurate! I've done plenty of personal research and none of the studies publshed in the last 30 years have come even close to what I have seen. As someone who has the "inside track," I know how financially and logistically difficult it is for someone to seek treatment. There are government-run agencies to track every problem from the most common cold to the more rare mental illness (one of which my child has) and all of them have an office at NIMH and NIH and the CDC to track both! But nobody is bothering to track what is no longer a white, upper middle-class, female, over-achievers' problem. It is crossing every single "boundary," such as it is. This book calls for an organized and well thought-out political movement to achieve the medical research and treatment that is so sorely needed. As things stand at this time, I myself was only able to receive treatment because my grandmother was willing to help with costs. The absolute lowest price I was able to find was $13,000 down with payments lasting well into the future. This is completely prohibitive for most people and it shouldn't be that way. As a result of this book and my own recovery, despite this government, I am trying to carry through with this book's suggestions~ a sound political movement. I'm trying to bring positive body image classes into the middle schools and educate the educators about how kids who have an eating disorder think. I applaude this author for putting himself "out there" and calling for what some would think is such a RADICAL idea!!!

Dr. Kraatz' book is not only filled with research and relevant facts
on the pervasive, yet primarily ignored, epidemic of eating
disorders, but it also offers his personal perspective and experience
with the problem. This combined perspective makes the book a 'must
read' for not only those who treat, but also those who struggle with,
eating disorders.

Kraatz says "...it is more healthy for me to affirm who I am than it
is for me to think that my unhealthy outward behavior indicates an
inner defect." Being sensitive to, and dissatisfied with, matters in
the world can be affirmed as rational (and not, as often implied,
'mentally ill'), then only the disordered behavioral ways of dealing
with that dissatisfaction can be treated as in need of correction.
Kraatz suggests that through affirmation of the legitimate root
causes of those emotions, a sense of pride can replace the feelings
of shame, and those emotions can find positive, and productive,
redirection.

This was the best diet I had ever tried! My sister and I went on this diet back in the mid 80's. She chickened out after a week or so, but I stuck with it and I actually lost 13lbs in the first week. I was so shocked and thrilled that I stuck with it - even though it was TOUGH!! But in the end I lost 65lbs within a year and kept it off until I had my first child in 1992. Five years later I had another child and still haven't lost the weight from the first pregnancy. But that's okay. I loaned the book out and have never gotten it back. I'm doing an out-of-print search for it now and when I find it, I will back on the road again. If you are optimistic about diets, try this one first. You will change your mind quickly and happy weight lost!!!

The Rice Diet book helped me to drop 65 pounds eight years ago and keep it off for four years (until I got pregnant again and gained 40 extra pounds!). Now that my baby's weaned, I can't wait to go back on this diet! It's safe, and unlike other diets which try to make food more delicious, this bland diet helps you distance yourself from the love of food (as the author says, we already love food too much or we'd all be thin!). Really well-written and thought-provoking--a good snippet of information on every page.

Finally, a book that has tapped into "How" and not why I need to make changes in my life. This is exactly what I needed out of a book. It was like Dr. Klapow and Dr. Pruitt were right next to me the whole time cheering me on. I absolutely tore through the pages the more I read it. I've known why I need to make changes in my life, but never had the drive or guidance. I do now! It was so simple. Who needs Tony Robbins when you have Dr. Klapow and Dr. Pruitt.
Like SO many other people, I've fallen off of the healthy lifestyle wagon. Since reading this book, I've realized how important my health is for me AND my family...and now, how to make the changes!

A complete wellness approach

Review Date: 2008-06-08
I have always believed that there is more to fitness than just weight loss. It's intriguing that some individuals appear to have the 'perfect body', but are not 'well' in the real sense (may have other stressful life factors). Then there are those who may not have rock hard abs, but live a relatively stress free life. Where does the balance lie? In fact, are we are Americans out of balance? Does technology and our way of life foster the seeds of an inactive, disconnected society? The book opens up pandora's box and stimulates thought about the question "What exactly does wellness mean for the average American?". The word 'Total Activation' presents a new spin on this subject and I like, in particular, the way Nitin breaks down the subject of 'activation' into 5 components. The book suggests that we learn from the wisdom of Eastern cultures like India, and this is a good attempt to 'solve the puzzle' about health and wellness in the west compared to the east. The engaging dialogue between the two main characters makes it an easy and informative read. It's almost like reading 'The Secret', but for fitness and wellness.

Interesting perspective on fitness and weight loss in America. It's not a 'run of the mill' approach or a fad, but a balanced system of wellness that originates in Indian culture. I like the comparison between East and West - an eye opener. The 30 day plan at the end of the book helps put all the pieces together. The book advises that Americans live life in a simple way - less food, less meat, more physical activity, meaningful goals and enriched social lives. It's an all inclusive 'life' - Total Activation. I am in Day 5 of the 30 day plan and it feels great."

Everyone wants to improve in at least one, if not all aspects of wellness. I like the way this book talks about life and existence beyond weight loss and compares American culture with Indian culture. Our society is so geared towards weight loss and dieting that we have forgotten what it means to live healthy and happy at the same time. I have tried many fitness and diet plans, and learned from my mistakes each time. More often than not, I have been disappointed with my results. In my experience, you must be happy with who you are, have someone to help you and be committed to reach your goals. This book talks about your attitude, environment, fitness and life goals and intertwines them into this nifty concept Nitin calls 'Total Activation'. Although I approached this as a skeptic, I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of information. I tend to get bored with fitness and self help books, but this book has an easy flowing style and is a breeze to read. It takes a while to become a true believer in EPSSI - emotional, physical, social, spiritual and intellectual wellness, but this dissection of 'wellness' as Nitin calls it has stimulated thought after putting the book down. The strategies are fundamental, yet deep. It takes days or even weeks to digest and apply these strategies but its well worth it once you incorporate them into your routine. I got a lot out of this book.

I am from a family of four distinct age group and four distinct workout levels and this is the ONLY book that deals with ALL of our distinct goals. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to obtain an increased level of productivity, whether physical or mental! While there are many exercise books out there, this one has a very unusual yet welcome spin on east vs west health patterns and can be enlightening to both! The author has done a phenomenal job putting all this together and I can't wait for the follow-up book!

This book is a newer version of Dr. Reading's "Your Family Tree Connection." Your Family Tree Connection: The Family Tree Way to Better Health
As a recently diagnosed gluten sensitive person, I read "Trace Your Genes" and was amazed at the correlations in my family, including my brother's celiac, my cousin's colon cancer, my father's obvious (but never discussed) gas and indigestion problems and my mothers anemia and heart attack, to mention a few, and not to mention the many tell-tale signs and genetic markers he outlines in his book that reinforce his theories. It all started to make sense and helped clarify past experiences in my health. I wish I had this knowledge 20 years ago when it would have mattered to my parents and cousin.
Fortunately for you, this book was written by a medical doctor (and psychiatrist), so it will be more credible to (and help dismiss doubt from) your doctor. This book can very likely help you and help your doctor help you on your road to health. I hope you will not only read it, but also pass on copies to your loved ones and friends. I know I will.

Fascinating, well-reasoned reading

Review Date: 2003-08-13
"Trace Your Genes to Health" is more than anything else an examination of the current state of the study of heredity and medicine. The author, Chris Reading, is a physician in Australia. After graduating from medical school he became qualified in psychiatry and specialized in organic psychiatry. From this point he began to notice the relationships between vitamin-mineral deficiencies, food allergies, and genetics as they affect neuropsychiatric disorders. Soon he was able to compile data to show that there are genetic factors in many, many problems that are not generally thought to be genetic in nature. Dr. Reading has distilled his years of experience and knowledge into this book.

It is not a book designed for self-diagnosis of problems and that is good. The book does an excellent job of explaining the basics of genetics and how the various types of dominant/recessive, autosomal, and X-linked factors work together to create a genetic pattern of inheritance. Throughout the book Dr. Reading builds a persuasive case for examining the family tree as part of a more holistic approach to health than just treating a symptom that occurs in your generation. Looking at the family history may reveal many clues as to how to treat a problem as well as how to avoid it altogether.

After discussing genetics and how it works Dr. Reading goes into the details of how to make a medical family tree. It includes the information you should be looking for, how to get the information, how to diagram it, and even how to approach your doctor with your findings. This is followed with a section on various illnesses and how they might have a genetic factor. The multiple appendices include information on Illnesses, categorized for family trees, symptoms and signs, congenital defects, phenotypes, sociological data, and recommendations to help you deal with problems.

"Trace Your Genes to Health" is a guide to help you take control of your health through investigating avenues that are generally overlooked. This would be a recommended book for anyone who has noticed a pattern of medical problems in their family and wants to know what can be done to help their doctor treat them. If you suspect that your family has had a pattern of medical problems and want to deal with it before it becomes a problem for you then this book will help you build the information necessary to determine if you need to be concerned or not.

This book was recently featured in Dr. David William's newsletter, Alternatives. Dr. Williams finds Dr. Reading's work essential to creating a health plan for ourselves. I think everyone should read this book and get an understanding of how disease is created through the generations, what clues we can find from our family trees, and what we can sanely do about our health futures!

A must have orthomolecular resource book!

Dr Readings Book is work of a pure genius. Getting patients to track family illness to determine proper treatment is what is lacking in the current medical practice. Not only can the cause of disease be treated and identified but prevented in the newer generations. The book contains excellent case studies of those who have recovered from serious mental/physical sickness from using the knowledge of the family tree. I would recommend it as a must orthomolecular resource book.

I have read quite of few books on this subject. This book not only covers they how and why but offers real tools for dealing with this issue, which I have never seen. This books has changed my life and has helped in a lot of other areas I was not accepting. I better understand why I ate my feelings and all the things that were really eating at me. I strongly recommend reading this book and doing the exercises she recommends. I am confident that I will never regain my weight again without ever having to diet again! I can enjoy eating. Thanks Jackie and Diana, you have changed my life by writing this book!

I am a fitness professional and I always end up disgusted and disappointed when I get asked to look at yet another dieting book. This book contains 1) solid information in regards to eating and calories; 2) an enlightened approach to viewing yourself! What a pleasure to read. Thank you Jackie and Diane!

This book is fantastic. It espouses a philosophy about living life to its fullest. Jackie's book helped me realize that Anger, Jealousy, and all negative emotions can make you fat. Who could have guessed that emotions have calories? So, I stopped eating my emotions.

Thanks to her book I saw the reason that I kept getting fat and why NO DIET ever seemed to help me in the long term. Thanks to the wonderful insights in her book, I have lost 45 pounds and am halfway towards my goal of 100 pounds. Thank you, Jackie.

For years I had been trying to figure out why I could not seem to be successful in my weight loss efforts. I seemed to be always "shooting myself in the foot". From the very beginning of "Un-Dieting", it became very clear that these two women had shared some of my own problems and questions. I have never read a book that addressed my needs as this book did. It may be a small book but it is very powerful. It got my thinking straightened out and I now know that by keeping it near me and re-reading it I will finally achieve my goal and get my weight under control. It is an answer to a prayer. I cannot recommend it too highly. I think it will prove to be a welcome aid for a lot of people.
