You'll be delighted to find out you can throw words like "determination" and "willpower" out the window and replace them with "commitment" - and when you are ready to make the commitment to become a healthier person, you'll really find yourself making those changes.
This is a very sensible approach to health and fitness, and is not a diet or fitness plan - you'll find no menus or exercises in here. This book is great for mentally preparing for your journey to health and wellness.

My newly svelte dogReview Date: 2005-09-17
That was twenty years ago when I was a young pup myself and hated society's pressure on me to be thin. I have a bit more perspective now. I also have a dachshund. I've read that dachshunds are prone to back problems as they get older, and that excess fat aggravates this unhappy condition.
But it's so easy to slip him a little extra dog food or drop a bit of my dinner into his dish after I eat. He loves people food. He also loves training snacks, and the mini-treats in the car, and the food stuffed into his kong to keep him busy when left alone.
He began to expand. I knew I had to take steps. To paraphrase that notorious radio psychologist, Dr. Laura, "I am my dog's owner." I bought this book to help me be a better guardian of my pooch's girth.
It's a very nutritious book! My favorite tidbit is how to know if your dog is really fat of just, ahem, "big-boned." And I also know how much food to feel my dog, and how to read dog food labels. No more dumping food in his dish according to how hungry he looks or how especially fond I am of him at that moment. I guess one of the things I need pounding into my head is that overfeeding is not the same as love. If I want my dog to live long and prosper, I'd better control his diet and give him enough exercise. The author gives lots of ideas on exercise for all kinds of different types of households. Just do it! It matters.
Halfway through the book, there's a startling picture of a fat daschshund with my dog's face and coloring but a lot more pudge. I look at my dog and see his still boundless energy and healthy spine, and I know that picture is what I want to avoid.
I'd like more discussion of different theories of nutrition, because a perusal of the Internet discloses fierce argument over this point, and it seems hard to figure out. But so is human nutrition.

If you are looking for the new Atkins diet for your dog, steer clear. But if you want to help your dog improve his or her overall health for, as the title says, "a long and happy life," you should absolutely buy this book.

You need to follow the special diets religiously. Your LIFE depends on it.
Forget about just beating cancer with Radiation therapy and Chemo. You need to attack cancer from all fronts. Learn as much as you can about YOUR specific type of cancer. Follow a diet like the ones laid out in this book (It's more of an eating lifestyle change), go to a Nutrition therapist if necessary.
There are also medical doctors who have studied alternative therapy and can provide anti-cancer injections.
My sister has stage 4 cancer which spread from her Esophagus to her back and thigh bones. We were devestated and used this book and a doctor who had studied alternative cancer therapy in Switzerland. Her cancer has stopped spreading at last.
VERY GOOD BOOK. VERY HELPFUL. EXCELLENT RESOURCE TO USE ALONG WITH YOUR CONVENTIONAL CANCER TREATMENT.

I shop according to the pantry lists in the book and find that my family's overall food costs have decreased - along with my weight, thanks to the "bigger bodies" meal plan sample. Also, it gives a couple of different nutrient profiles (% cho, % fat, % pro) to choose from. I like the Paleolithic profile (Caveman), personally.
I like most of the recipes in the book and am able to change them a little to suit my tastes while maintaining the nutritional integrity of the dish. The food is not dull or boring. I really like the meal suggestions - they teach me what my meals need to "look" like. The authors even included a meal planner suitable for kids, which is great, since Type II is a hereditary condition.
Best of all, I have been able to reduce my bg levels to a normal range, lose weight and have A LOT of energy to get the execise in that completes my lifestyle goal.
There are couple of recipes that sounded like something I would like, but turned out not very tasty, so I scored the book a "4". Still, I highy recommend this book.
I am a skeptic, turned believer.
Very easy reading. Very understandable for the layman.Review Date: 2006-03-09

PRACTICAL QUICK REFERENCE GUIDEReview Date: 2004-08-08
This is an excellent quick reference guide to find your way amongst all the food and health products and the profusion of supplements available these days. Each entry provides a definition in plain language, i.e. what it is, where it comes from, the form it takes, how to prepare or take it, the medicinal and health benefits and the recommended daily use.
Not only foodstuffs are discussed, as the entries include related matters such as for example the acid-alkaline balance, allergy, antibiotics etc. The entries run from acacia to zinc. The book includes a list of helpful addresses and herbal suppliers in Australia, the UK and the USA and concludes with an index. I also recommend The A o Z Guide To Supplements by Phyllis A Balch and Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible.

The second section of the book covers how you can ensure that your child can have optimum health by discovering environmental and nutritional problems and fixing them. The section on a diet that can be used to determine your child's food and chemical sensitivities was especially useful. Using it anyone can work through the system to determine what he or she and their children should be avoiding. It also includes nutritional support regimens for athletes and children. Finally, the appendix details some safe household product alternatives to ones with more toxic chemicals.
"Our Children's Health" is a recommended read for anyone concerned about nutritional health of their self or their children. It is also recommended for those who want to seek alternative holistic approaches to some common problems of childhood.
Everyone should read this book!Review Date: 2002-09-16
Bonnie Minsky and Dr. Lisa Holk share their years of experience and knowledge on a broad range of health issues. After reading this book, I feel empowered by the natural, wholesome alternatives available to the most common ailments of our society.
I highly recommend reading this book. If you have children, or are thinking of getting pregnant, this book is a must!

Recipes Designed for Your PhaseReview Date: 2007-03-29
Simple ingredients to find (not so with other low carb books, i.e. South Beach, as I had to go to three stores before I got all ingredients for one dish)!
Recipes are easy to follow, and simple enough to make for the novice cook.
Items are visually attractive, tasty, not dry, bland and uninviting as some low carb recipes tend to be.
The fats included might be a bit high for those following diets that sharply cut fats along with carbs, though one can adjust them to suit with little effort.
All of the recipes I have made were so tasty, that even some non-low carb dieters requested them when I made them for potluck dinners!!!
