As a complete and utter novice to Macrobiotic dieting & lifestyle, I couldn't ask for a better definitive guide! This book avoids the lofty, philosophical language usually associated with natural & so-called "alternative" diets, and you don't have to drive a 1970 Volkswagon van to be in sync with its format! The staple foods are clearly explained (along with detailed definitions of the Asian foods, which may be fairly obscure to most Americans, me included). I became interested in this diet when Madonna brought it mainstream, but had reservations about my ability to manage it myself.... would I need a staff of professional celebrity-worthy chefs, like Madonna probably has, or could I follow its format on an every-day basis, including shopping & stocking the kitchen? With this book, the answer is "yes". I recommend it not only for a macrobiotic diet, but also for vegan dieters (as it excludes dairy & eggs, as well as meat).

This book is life-changing.

This book includes some useful cognitive therapy techniques for behavioural changes, and several interesting case-studies. It is not a source for specific nutritional or exercise information...more a guide to techniques to help change unhealthy habits. It's a very refreshing change from fad diet books that advocate unrealistic diets or exercise routines. Read this book if you are serious about changing your health for the rest of your life. Pick up a copy of Dr. Atkin's (or similar) if you feel like losing 20 lbs. for a couple months, then reverting to your old habits and gaining it back.

I have only just begin to read this book but can already tell that it is what I've been searching for. Susan Cantwell writes in a very understandable fashion, and she makes things MAKE SENSE! It is behavior modification at it's finest, and I can't wait to get home and read the next section! You will NOT be disappointed.

Definitely Worthwhile!

In her clearly written book, with its positive and supportive tone, fitness trainer Susan Cantwell comes across as the coach who really believes in you and your ability to make positive, lasting life changes. The book discusses 6 major stages of change, from initial resistance through termination; the latter stage occurs when the changes you've made become permanent, and you are no longer tempted to resume unhealthy behaviors. This is the one I'm aiming for! According to the author, the stage most often omitted is that of planning/preparation. Thus her book includes useful planning exercises, such as committing time in your schedule in advance for exercise, menu planning, meal preparation. Another helpful exercise asks you to anticipate potential obstacles to your new healthy lifestyle and write down in advance your plans for handling them. One very minor criticism: the food chart on p. 12 is totally inadequate. If you can fit everything you eat in a week on this form, chances are you don't have a weight problem! So you may want to adapt or develop your own. Still, I highly recommend this book as a motivating, helpful, and practical tool in your journey towards making permanent healthy lifestyle changes.

My fitness trainer loaned me this book and before I got halfway through it I knew I had to own it. I will be referencing it again and again and recommending it to everyone I know who is seeking a healthier lifestyle. What a refreshing change to all the books that promise you can become healthy with little or no work or planning. Do it the hard way (gain, lose, gain, lose) or learn to do it the right way, using this book as a guide.

You'll be delighted to find out you can throw words like "determination" and "willpower" out the window and replace them with "commitment" - and when you are ready to make the commitment to become a healthier person, you'll really find yourself making those changes.

This is a very sensible approach to health and fitness, and is not a diet or fitness plan - you'll find no menus or exercises in here. This book is great for mentally preparing for your journey to health and wellness.

Although weight-loss in dogs involves common sense more than anything else, such as reducing caloric intake and increasing activity, this small book offers most of the tips that will ensure safe weight-loss in any dog. The book is easy to read, and is medically accurate. But perhaps the best lesson to be learned is not to let your dog get fat in the first place. It's easy to succumb to giving your dog that extra treat or table scrap when you see see those pleading eyes, but this temptation should be resisted for the long-term health and longevity of your dog.

My newly svelte dog

The first time I met a dog on a diet, twenty or so years ago, I felt nothing but pity for the poor thing and scorn for its owner. How dare she enforce human standards on her sweet, good-natured lab? Sure, he was a little barrel-waisted, but so what? Let the dog be free!

That was twenty years ago when I was a young pup myself and hated society's pressure on me to be thin. I have a bit more perspective now. I also have a dachshund. I've read that dachshunds are prone to back problems as they get older, and that excess fat aggravates this unhappy condition.

But it's so easy to slip him a little extra dog food or drop a bit of my dinner into his dish after I eat. He loves people food. He also loves training snacks, and the mini-treats in the car, and the food stuffed into his kong to keep him busy when left alone.

He began to expand. I knew I had to take steps. To paraphrase that notorious radio psychologist, Dr. Laura, "I am my dog's owner." I bought this book to help me be a better guardian of my pooch's girth.

It's a very nutritious book! My favorite tidbit is how to know if your dog is really fat of just, ahem, "big-boned." And I also know how much food to feel my dog, and how to read dog food labels. No more dumping food in his dish according to how hungry he looks or how especially fond I am of him at that moment. I guess one of the things I need pounding into my head is that overfeeding is not the same as love. If I want my dog to live long and prosper, I'd better control his diet and give him enough exercise. The author gives lots of ideas on exercise for all kinds of different types of households. Just do it! It matters.

Halfway through the book, there's a startling picture of a fat daschshund with my dog's face and coloring but a lot more pudge. I look at my dog and see his still boundless energy and healthy spine, and I know that picture is what I want to avoid.

I'd like more discussion of different theories of nutrition, because a perusal of the Internet discloses fierce argument over this point, and it seems hard to figure out. But so is human nutrition.

Straightforward and sensible

This book is exactly what it advertises itself as - simple. But that does not stop it from being a very valuable source of information on ways to improve your dog's life. There are no high-tech, high-expense suggestions for how to treat your dog just like Paris Hilton treats Tinkerbelle. Instead, Ms. Garvey uses a straightforward approach, giving detailed and specific information on how to improve your dog's general living habits, from diet to exercise and much, much more.

If you are looking for the new Atkins diet for your dog, steer clear. But if you want to help your dog improve his or her overall health for, as the title says, "a long and happy life," you should absolutely buy this book.

I am the author, and I hope you like this book. I was inspired to write both My Fat Dog and My Fat Cat because I had a fat dog, and I know, first hand, how easy it is to overfeed and underexercise your pet...and how it can affect your pet's health and life span. (Our dog is now 12 pounds lighter and lots healthier.) I tried to make the book fun to read, and offer a lot of ways to get your pet started on the road to good health. It can be done, and I want to help. Please visit me on the web at http://www.myfatdogbook.com, and share your stories.

But I also want to tell you that I will be donating a portion of books' proceeds to organizations involved in rescuing and sheltering pets in the devastated Gulf Coast area. Every little bit helps.

This book is an excellent way to kick start your immune system in the fight against cancer.
You need to follow the special diets religiously. Your LIFE depends on it.
Forget about just beating cancer with Radiation therapy and Chemo. You need to attack cancer from all fronts. Learn as much as you can about YOUR specific type of cancer. Follow a diet like the ones laid out in this book (It's more of an eating lifestyle change), go to a Nutrition therapist if necessary.
There are also medical doctors who have studied alternative therapy and can provide anti-cancer injections.

My sister has stage 4 cancer which spread from her Esophagus to her back and thigh bones. We were devestated and used this book and a doctor who had studied alternative cancer therapy in Switzerland. Her cancer has stopped spreading at last.

VERY GOOD BOOK. VERY HELPFUL. EXCELLENT RESOURCE TO USE ALONG WITH YOUR CONVENTIONAL CANCER TREATMENT.

I purchased this book after a friend passed away from caner (within days of finding out, he was gone). In speaking with some others and doing some internet research, I kept hearing about this book. It seems that our society is really working against us, as most things have caner causing properties in the contents. This book is an eye opener and I suggest it for those that would like to make some better food decisions and desire to have a greater awareness of what they can do for prevention.

I bought this book for a friend with cancer and after reading the preface and first chapter just couldn't put it down! Verne Varona writes with an amazing clarity, insight and entertaining style while demystifing all kinds of nutritional myths. His information about acid and alkaline is the best I've read anywhere and his sugar craving information has allowed me to challenge what was a formidable addiction. It seems like he's taken the best of numerous cultural medicines and combined them into a practical and refreshing melting pot approach. Best of all, after five weeks on this program I feel better than I have in 30 years! I have as much kitchen savvy as kangeroo, but his recipes are easy-to-follow and absolutely delicious. Whether you have cancer, concerned about cancer or just in search of good health, this highly motivating book is a must read for anyone wanting to improve or recover their health. That's my take!

If you are a person who wants valid, clear information on how to take care of yourself for the rest of your life whether you have cancer or not, this is the book for you, I healed my cancer fifteen years ago using these principles and there never outdated, like so many diet trends out there!! this is a keeper. Thank you for your hard work, in putting the book together. L.K.

The Single Most Effective Eating Plan I've Ever Seen
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-20
I first discovered the Glucose Revolution series almost 9 years ago while working to lose the last few pounds of baby weight. I'd been up and down the scale for many years and had tried dozens of weight-loss plans. After reading the original Glucose Revolution Life Plan, I tossed out the calorie counter and started watching the glycemic counts for foods. I never looked back. I've maintained a svelte figure ever since and I eat regular meals and snacks (including dark chocolate with nuts!), both at home and while dining out. I subsequently used the Glucose Revolution books extensively while researching my own books and often take it to my presentations so audiences can see it when I address weight loss and blood sugar control. This is one of the most essential books you can read for longevity, health and weight loss, and this new version is better than ever.

I was very skeptical about this method of blood glucose control, but after a friend tried it and lost five pounds, I thought I'd give it a try.

I shop according to the pantry lists in the book and find that my family's overall food costs have decreased - along with my weight, thanks to the "bigger bodies" meal plan sample. Also, it gives a couple of different nutrient profiles (% cho, % fat, % pro) to choose from. I like the Paleolithic profile (Caveman), personally.

I like most of the recipes in the book and am able to change them a little to suit my tastes while maintaining the nutritional integrity of the dish. The food is not dull or boring. I really like the meal suggestions - they teach me what my meals need to "look" like. The authors even included a meal planner suitable for kids, which is great, since Type II is a hereditary condition.

Best of all, I have been able to reduce my bg levels to a normal range, lose weight and have A LOT of energy to get the execise in that completes my lifestyle goal.

There are couple of recipes that sounded like something I would like, but turned out not very tasty, so I scored the book a "4". Still, I highy recommend this book.
I am a skeptic, turned believer.

Too many people focus on nutrition only when they are feeling run down or ill. To maintain good health at all times, one needs to pay constant attention to the fuel that you provide to your body. The immune system relies on what we eat for the essential nutrients that it needs to combat illness. Good health is a strategy that everybody ought to employ to prevent illness and provide the body with the resources to protect itself.

This is an excellent quick reference guide to find your way amongst all the food and health products and the profusion of supplements available these days. Each entry provides a definition in plain language, i.e. what it is, where it comes from, the form it takes, how to prepare or take it, the medicinal and health benefits and the recommended daily use.

Not only foodstuffs are discussed, as the entries include related matters such as for example the acid-alkaline balance, allergy, antibiotics etc. The entries run from acacia to zinc. The book includes a list of helpful addresses and herbal suppliers in Australia, the UK and the USA and concludes with an index. I also recommend The A o Z Guide To Supplements by Phyllis A Balch and Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible.

I've read a few books on nutrition as it relates to health but few compare with this one. In "Our Children's Health" author Bonnie Minsky details the "nutritional crisis" of America's children. She does an excellent job of discussing allergies, food intolerances, asthma, immune system dysfunction, ADD and other learning and behavior disorders, autism spectrum disorders, vaccines, osteoporosis, eating disorders, depression, and violence and how each of these may be affected by nutritional or environmental factors. With lots of charts, descriptions, suggestions, and other detailed information this first section is easy to follow and use.

The second section of the book covers how you can ensure that your child can have optimum health by discovering environmental and nutritional problems and fixing them. The section on a diet that can be used to determine your child's food and chemical sensitivities was especially useful. Using it anyone can work through the system to determine what he or she and their children should be avoiding. It also includes nutritional support regimens for athletes and children. Finally, the appendix details some safe household product alternatives to ones with more toxic chemicals.

"Our Children's Health" is a recommended read for anyone concerned about nutritional health of their self or their children. It is also recommended for those who want to seek alternative holistic approaches to some common problems of childhood.

Everyone should read this book!

His story has made a very large impact on my life. It's been a number of years since I read the book yet I still refer to it on occasion. Don't be misled by the title and think that only those with severe mental health problems can benefeit from the book. I feel that people from many backgrounds and differing levels of emotional and physical well being can create great benefiets for themselves with the help of this book. This is a book for those who want to take full responsibility for their health, who are not afraid to look honestly at there lives and who beleive that what they do in the present helps create their future.

Phase 1 Low Carb Diet Cookbook as well as Phase 11 Low Carb Diet Cookbook by Better Homes and Gardens, are geared for every kind of cook.

Simple ingredients to find (not so with other low carb books, i.e. South Beach, as I had to go to three stores before I got all ingredients for one dish)!

Recipes are easy to follow, and simple enough to make for the novice cook.
Items are visually attractive, tasty, not dry, bland and uninviting as some low carb recipes tend to be.

The fats included might be a bit high for those following diets that sharply cut fats along with carbs, though one can adjust them to suit with little effort.

All of the recipes I have made were so tasty, that even some non-low carb dieters requested them when I made them for potluck dinners!!!

Loved the recipes in this book. Has beautiful pictures of the food that make you want to try various recipes. Who would have thought that Crheese-crusted Cauliflower could be a diet food? Grilled Bass with Strawberry Salsa, yum!! Lots of good salsa recipes you can use for fish, chicken or just dipping with fat free chips. Loved this book!!!

The Pocket Guide To Macrobiotics is the perfect start to understanding the yin and yang of the diet. It explains the meaning of macrobiotics, the basic ideas behind the diet, how it can be used in everyday life, to heal, to gain energy, to help keep the body healthy. While published in 1997 it still makes total sense. It is flexible yet I have to warn you it will not be an easy regimen to follow at first.

Don't miss this small, pocket-sized volume if you need a thorough introduction to the principles and philosophy of macrobiotics. Without including any recipes, author Carl Ferre has done an excellent job condensing the most important aspects of marcobiotics into this handy book. An easy read, keep it in your purse or jacket pocket to peruse when you have a few spare minutes.

I'm so glad I found this!

This book provides a great deal of information on beginning and sustaining a macrobiotic diet and is written in a clear, concise manner. It speaks positively about small dietary changes and never stoops to belittling other diets. When I bought the book, I knew absolutely nothing about the macrobiotic way of life. When I put it down, I had a good working knowledge.

Although it doesn't include any recipes, I think this book is excellent.

Best Expression of the macrobiotic way of eating to date

This small pocket guide outlines food choices in diagrams displaying the relative positions of food rather than in terms of nutritional data. Nutritional quantities and percentages of food are misleading in that the imply accurate descriptions of food before it is eaten and digested. Each body is different and the macrobiotic way of eating requires considering the condition of the eater as well as the food eaten. For anyone who has encountered strange or misleading information of this grain-based diet would benefit from reading this small guide. It is well written in an easy to follow format that persuades rather than dictates. The resources and references are excellent and the price is right.
