Alternative medicine works for alcohol abuse

And this book proves it. Finally someone has let the cat out of the bag that alternative medicine has been used for centuries to conquer alcohol craving and alcohol abuse.
I'm happy drinkers have more options with this book. Now, in addition to cutting down or stopping, they can get a little extra help with the herbs and supplements in this book. Every drinker should own this book.

this book sends an important message . . .

that message is we have to start thinking out of the box when it comes to
alcohol abuse treatment. i gave this book to a friend of mine who has a
drinking problem but was dead against stopping or going to AA. he was
receptive to this book because it gave him some organic alternatives to
drinking less. in other words it got him started doing something about
his drinking.

some people just need a little shove to do something about their drinking
and this book provided that little shove.

Brilliant! Why hasn't anyone written about this before?

I'm a drinker who has struggled on and off with booze for years and I'm ecstatic someone has finally written about a more organic approach to problem drinking. This book gave me a different perspective. I was especially interested in how chinese and ayurvedic medicine treat drinkers and the concept of "balancing" my life so booze becomes less important and I drink less.

This book opened my mind up. I guess no ones written about alternative medicine to address alcohol abuse because the disease concept and AA are so deeply ingrained in the US.

I am so happy I came across this book at amazon. It's the only book I've
found that talks about how other alternative medicines and other cultures
view alcohol abuse and how to treat it. I was thinking about getting
prescription medication to cut the desire to drink but after reading this
I don't need to. There are lots of herbs to do that at the natural food
store. I've read Cornett's other book, 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking:
How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Intake, and she always covers
interesting things.

For me the vitamin and supplement part was the best. It talks about things
you can buy over the counter to cut craving. The Chinese and Ayurveda
medicine parts were really interesting too.

I realize this is only one take on problem drinking. But if you take these
suggestions in the book, along with her program in her other book to
improve your drinking habits you can cut craving and consumption without
prescription medicine.

Unique Book!

This is one of the most interesting books I've read about alcohol abuse - it really offers a different take on problem drinking and how to fix it. It's the first book I've found which discusses how different alternative medicine approaches have treated alcohol abuse for centuries - long before AA came along.
Homeopathic, Chinese and Ayurvedic and western herbs are covered - explaining how each of these systems views alcohol abuse, how it develops and the best ways to treat it. Another major theme of the book is balance. If one's life is a balance of physical, mental and spiritual components, the less need there is for alcohol. Truly a fascinating read and helpful to me personally.

I didn't lose the weight I should've because I cheated but still lost 20 lbs. and I'm still following this menu as it is good and easy to do. I'm hoping to lose another 10 lbs. yet. This is a great book. I have lost many pounds using the methods in the book. But I replace his Nautilus routines with my own free weight and other routines. The only quibble I have with the book is that there may be too much sugar in the diet. Darden states that the diet is not for everybody but I believe there is too much sugar for anybody. It doesn't seem to harm anything for the normal individual but it does encourage a sweet tooth.

This method really works

I first did the Nautilus diet about 3 years ago, and lost the first 20 lbs during the 10 week regimen, then 20 more lbs after the regimen ended because I kept up the healthy eating and exercise routine. I kept this weight off for 2.5 years until I moved home for 6 weeks before my wedding! Since then I have probably gained 15 of the lost pounds back, but it is b/c I stopped exercising and eating properly. I have just started the diet again, and know (REALLY KNOW) that in 10 weeks I will look fantastic again. This book gives you a menu for each meal, recipes to follow, and a grocery list. It really couldn't be easier. When you think about it, 10 weeks is only 2 1/2 months. That surely isn't long to wait for a new body and a new lease on life. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone needing an easy and effective diet.

Essential b.s. eliminator

After reading countless magazine sales pitches couched as articles and opinionated arguments among body builders on the Internet, this book is a welcome, refreshing source of understandable factual information on what to eat, how to eat it, and when to eat it. Simple.

Since it is by and for the U.S. Navy it is not trying to sell you the latest supplement or training video, so you might be left wondering what the catch is--there is no catch.

Large text, many tables of reference information, clearly written in a commonsense way make this indispensable for body builders or athletes, not just military personnel. I can't recommend this manual highly enough.

Simple and Concise Nutritional Information

Review Date: 2007-02-03
I have bought nutritional books in the past and just been swamped with their language and theory. As a incredibly busy graduate student (people with similarly busy lives can relate) I just didn't have time to sit down and battle out the information, let alone in one sitting. Upon getting this book, I cracked it open and already found myself zipping through the worksheets giving myself quick access to important nutritional information. The authors have broken the subject down into easily understandable segments (though this book probably isn't for the more advanced nutritionist). It is important to note that the book is targeted towards Navy SEALs and other military personnel. Consequently it does give information that is important to them and may not be relevant to the average reader (i.e. - information on military rations and mission recovery nutrition). The chapters covered are:
1. Energy Balance = Energy Expenditure - Energy Intake
2. Carbohydrate, Fat and Protein: The Energy-Providing Macronutrients
3. Micronutrients: Vitamins and Minerals
4. Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
5. Fiber and Health
6. Fluid Replacement: Water and Other Beverages
7. Healthy Snacking
8. Restaurants, Fast Foods and Eating Out
9. Nutritional Considerations For Endurance Activities
10. Nutritional Considerations For Strength Training
11. Nutrition for Optimum Mission Performance
12. Nutritional Interventions for Mission Recovery
13. Food for the Field: Military and Other Rations
14. Nutritional Considerations for Adverse Conditions
15. Ergogenic Agents - Looking for "The Edge"
16. Ergolytic Agents - "Going Backwards"
Plus all the appendices and worksheets you could ask for!
I highly recommend this book for someone who just wants to get healthy and wants quick access to the information to do so. I ESPECIALLY recommend this book for military personnel who don't have the time in the field for the insane calculations found in other books, but who find it absolutely vital to stay in shape (their lives may depend on it!). Hopefully that was helpful and good luck in your searches for good health!

Clear and concise nutrition information for high perfomance

Review Date: 1999-08-10
This volume provides clear and concise information on nutrition taylored to the need of the U.S. Navy SEAL operators and is as such equally valuable to all military personel. Although much of the material covered can be found elsewhere, this book cuts to the core and deliveres the information in context of the various missions undertaken by SEAL's and SEAL trainees, garnished with results from research conducted by the U.S. Navy specific to SEAL's and their operational environment.

Written in a workbook format, it provides tables and work-through examples to let you easily determine your own diatery needs. The book also covers the contents and nutritional value of the different military rations (MRE, LRRP etc.) and their usefullness for various missions and climatic conditions. A chapter on healthy eating in (fast food)restaurants and on eating for post-mission recovery adds to it's usefullness outside of field missions.

This is really a one-stop source for the military community. A very easy read and highly recommended!

As I began to read, I had a sense of deja vu - and no wonder, it was published in the UK as The Driving Force in 1989. I lent my copy to some miserable bastard who never returned it and it's now out of print, so I'm delighted to have re-acquired it, albeit inadvertantly; I recommend it highly. Don't be put off by any philosphical excess here, theories of our origin don't matter nearly as much as the biochemistry set out in this book which can literally restore your health if you have a Western degenerative disease. Crawford and Marsh elucidate an emerging paradigm.

This book was co-authored by David Marsh. Please ring 0044 171 460 2027 for details of other publications by D.Marsh. As co-author I wish to point out that the heterodox content of our major thesis as set out in this book has lead to severe academic ostracization of Michael Crawfurd in the intellectually impoverished and narrow milieu of biochemical nutritionists. Assuming that you, the potential reader, are not constrained by narrow academic rivalries may I invite you to enlarge your conception of the processes that have shaped our development and that of all the species with which we share this planet.

Essential reading: myths smashed, eyes opened.

Review Date: 2004-04-04
This wonderful book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in evolution or high level nutrition. You will soon see clearly that evolution is not fully understood. The case is made that evolution is constrained by nutritional requirements as much as a car is by the highway (my analogy not theirs). The myth of the boundless potential of evolution is destroyed forever, and sobering limits are imposed.

Don't blame Darwin- they make it clear that he saw the "highway as well as the car", but we have deified his theory and overlooked the limitations that he actually wrote about. One feels somewhat chastened after 30 years or so of blind worship to find that evolution is not the magic amulet taught in school, but merely a powerful tool with quite mundane limitations. These limitations must be understood if one wishes to have any scientific credibility. Sadly only a minority of scientists understand these limitations, and this little book makes the opinions of many seem peurile.

The philosophical and thought provoking discussion is most stimulating- the many interesting facts and anecdotes making it most most worthwhile reading. Like a kitten, my eyes have been opened. Thank you Crawford and Marsh

Confirms nutritional links with man's mind and shape

Review Date: 1999-09-18
While Crawford and March do a good job of presenting documented information, the data appears to confirm creation rather than evolution. Certainly nutrition can affect the size of man's brain, body and mental capacity. But had anthropologists written this book they would have falsely concluded that modern man is a different species. Mankind can progress or regress depending upon nutritional factors. Mankind appears to be in regression at the present time. Population expansion may force famines and disease, lest we forget the earth's human population has gone from 1.5 to 6.0 billion in just a couple of centuries. Good reading for the serious reader.

I know quite a bit about nutrition and the problem with our modern diet, so I was mostly interested in their theories on how nutrition has shaped evolution.

The authors present some truly astounding theories on the evolution of humankind, and argue their case well. The book is a bit slow in the beginning, but once they start talking about the evolution of life from the algae onward, hand on to your hats!

I went on the zone diet for years before going raw....I read this while researching a weight loss book I am writing. I wish I had read it years ago! The valuable insights about how vegans and mothers and AMERICANS in GENERAL are deficient in DHA, a critical fat for memory and eyesight, is astounding! The most fascinating part of the book is how Sears gives credit to fish oil for the evolution of man to Cro-Magnon 40,000 years ago. But now we are DEvolving as we have less DHA than ever in our diet. I am now on a mission to make people aware of this nutrient.
I wish that Barry would give vegan or at least vegetarian options for his meal plans, as eating meat is simply not sustainable for the masses, nor is it necessary. At least he does mention algae as an alternate source for DHA.
As usual, the book is filled with scientific nuggets to educate the reader. I love how he details the importance of getting pharmaceutical grade fish oil as opposed to the kind you might find at a health store or Costco's.

I have survived a most certain terminal cancer. In fact the MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston Texas, says that I'm the only one to have survived in the whole world.

But, as an aftermath, I have severe chronic pain because my brain has rewired itself due to the horrible pain I went through fighting the cancer. The condition is referred to as the Gate Theory. It now can be seen on MRI's. It took me 6-months to find the right doctor to treat it. He's been a pain specialist for 17 years and belongs to a group of doctors who rely on "MD Evidenced Nutrition" to understand what "natural" things work.

He put me on a heavy dose of Morphine to counter the pain, but he also put me on Fish Oil, not just any fish oil, but the oil referred to in this book, and I started thinking better and have taken on some minor work as a result. It's almost been a miracle.

Long_chain-fatty-acid-3, pharmaceutical grade, has done wonders. Because of this book I now understand why.

Many doctors assisted Dr. Sears in the writing of this book so that civilians, like me, can understand it. It's not a "fad" book at all. Just look in the back and you will see over 100 pages of clinical references backing up what Dr. Sears states in the book.

It's a must have to stay well and a must have to survive a serious illness.

excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production

The Omega Rx Zone, by Barry Sears is an excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production. Dr. Sears successfully translated volumes of leading edge biochemical research into an explanation non-researchers can comprehend, with some sustained effort.

Other books explain the fundamental Omega 6/Omega 3 essential fatty imbalance, but most fail to explain how increased Eicosapentanoic Acid (EPA) can inhibit excess inflammatory prostaglandin production, by down regulation of the 5 delta desaturase enzyme. In addition Dr. Sears explains how decreasing Arachidonic Acid levels reduces production of numerous inflammatory leukotrienes, produced by LOX 5 and LOX 15.

More importantly, Sears explains how increasing EPA and Decosahexanoic Acid (DHA) can dramatically reduce symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder, Depression, Osteoarthritis, Emphysema, Alzheimers Disease, High Blood Pressure, Atherosclerosis and other disorders. Sears provides many anonymous case histories illustrating patient improvements with high dose, pharmaceutically distilled fish oil.

Sears also explains cultural variations in essential fatty acid intake which correlate with depression and suicide rates. The Omega Rx Zone is a surprisingly readable explanation of some complex biochemistry and immunology.

Excellent omega-3 research

Review Date: 2006-01-08
This book gives a complete and easy to understand of the complex way in which the EPA&DHA long-chain fatty acids influence the hormonal system, and how their lack in the diet affects the body. The author explains why eating fish is not the best way to get omega-3's, mainly because of the heavy chemicals that fish accumulate in their tissues. He describes the differences between different types of fish oil and why (in his opinion) pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is the best way to supplement omega-3. He explains which blood test will tell you how healthy you are.

There is also a very interesting hypothesis on how a diet rich in omega-3 helped the development of the human brain in its early stages of evolution.

There are detalied explanations of how diseases such as cancer and auto-immune illnesses are related to long-chain omega-3's. The author explains how "silent" (cell) inflammation is the cause of many (if not most) major diseases today, especially chronic conditions.

There are explanations of the relationship between omega-3's and emotional well-being, as well as how they improve mental abilities.

As a sidenote, apparently there is currently only one brand on the market that satisfies the author's standards. They have a comparison table on their website showing how their brand offers the most omega-3 per dollar (to convince that it is worth the high price)--but they only compare with certain brands--and I know of at least another highly respected fish oil brand that offers even more omega-3's for half the price. So the only argument left is that pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is completely free of contaminants, whereas other types of oil are not. This argument is in my opinion not very strong, because there are enough brands (such as the one I was talking about before) that have levels of contaminants so small that they are not detectable in a lab--therefore which are really of negligible risk (compared for instance with the toxic substances found in our tap water).

Nevertheless, the in-depth analysis on the remarkably positive effects of EPA&DHA's on health is excellent, and I highly recommend this book.

Picked this up in the airport on yet another frenetic trip. I'd been having problems with memory loss: work very stressful, home very stressful - the usual. Thought, "Hmmm, Maybe all the chips and chocolate isn't the answer."

This book put it all in perspective. It was easy to dip in and read the bits that applied to me. I made some basic changes - just one at first (gave up coffee) then more (more fish, better vitamins, less fried food). Years of poor nutrition had made me forget what it's like to feel good.

Highly recommended - clearly written, easy to understand, this book could really make a difference in your life.

HUGE eye opener/ easy to understand

If you have tried to read other nutritional info books & got overwhelmed and frustrated, this is one for you. I've actually READ much of it and I'm retaining a lot more from this book than I could from others.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to the real scoop on all the garbage we're putting in our bodies (and our kids' bodies).

Life changing.

A must read for everyone

This book and the book "Optimum Nutrition For Your Child's Mind" by the same author are fantastic. They clearly outline how your brain works and what it needs in order to function at top level. In the U.S. people tend to pop a pill for whatever ails them but all they are doing is covering up the real problems and creating new ones. These books will open your eyes to how ridiculous it is for doctors to prescribe a potentially dangerous pill without first testing your biochemistry and searching for a cause that can be treated naturally.

I purchased this book because a friend of mine suggested it. She thought that it went right along with the Body Talk and Essential Oil book that I had been using. I thank her every day that she had suggested it.
I found this book so fascinating that I couldn't put it down. So I finished it on the day that I received it. It makes so much sence of why it is that we put on weight. It helps you to analyze what has triggered the weight gain that you have. And gives examples of how we can overcome the triggers.
This book has been a real eye opener for me. It made me look at myself differently and how I can improve on myself.
There is alot of self analyzing that you have to do but it gives you the tools that you need to do it with.
I would heartily recommend this book for someone that wants to do serious weight loss for life.

This is an excellent book that really explains just how complex obesity really is. It goes into great detail regarding the various physical and emotional reasons for the condition. The author talks about super-confident women (the book is geared to women) who have managed to overcome the odds and lose weight and keep it off. What the book does not do is offer any specific dietary guidelines. Instead she says it is best if each woman works out her own diet, taking her own needs and desires into consideration. She says you need to become a "scientist of your own body" and experiment to find what works and what doesn't for your particular situation. I thought the book was informative. It gives good guidelines about certain medical conditions, what tests you should have etc. but, in the end, it leaves the reader without any real guidance.

Finally! The complete truth about weight loss with no gimmicks, no hype. Sue Ellin Browder is a wonderfully honest investigative journalist with no pet theories to promote,no clinic to fund. She has talked to the world's leading obesity specialists, read the medical literature (more than 4000 studies!), talked to women who've been there (the weight-loss winners), and then written a guidebook any woman can use to achieve a healthy weight for life! This is a book for smart women who want to take charge of their weight and their lives. Rather than giving us a one-size-fits-all prescription (which, as we all know, never works), Browder gives us a list of options that have worked for other women and a bunch of questions you can ask, so you can make your own clear-headed decisions and make the choices that work best for you. I've already lost 12 pounds in three weeks just by becoming the "scientist of my own body" and achieving MY weight, MY way. Take charge. Buy this book. Strong, independent women have been waiting for these answers for years!!!!!

How Stress Makes You Fat

I'm telling everybody I know about this empowering book because it's helped me so much. It's the most refreshingly honest diet book I've ever read. All the studies the author writes about in the book are listed in the notes at the back so you can look them up for yourself and show them to your doctor if you want to. As we all know, it's impossible to take charge of your weight if you don't have all the facts. You begin clutching at straws. This book is called The Power because accurate information is power, and this is the FIRST REPORT telling women about all the new, cutting-edge research coming out of the biggest, most well-equipped fat labs. The most important surprise is how stress makes you fat. The big secret is a stress hormone called cortisol. Cortisol opens the unhealthy fat cell doors so the fat can go in. Cortisol can cause you to store more unhealthy fat even when you don't overeat! (That helps explain why I gained nearly 70 pounds when I really DON'T eat that much.) Scientists have now linked high cortisol levels to Depression Fat, Anger Fat, Binge-Eating Fat, Night-Eating Fat, Polycystic Ovary Fat, Lazy Thyroid Fat -- in all to 11 different ways you can gain unhealthy weight. Options. Making your own choices and finding your weight, your way. That's what The Power is all about. Buy this book. It will change your life. I've lost 60 pounds so far. Only 10 more to go!

MORE THAN A DIET BOOK, A HEALTHY WEIGHT BOOK

The author of this excellent book boils down all the latest research about weight. She then includes a bunch of quizzes so you can diagnose yourself, find out what fat type you have, and then figure out how to solve it. The author makes the point (and I agree with her) that most diet books disempower women by giving us ironclad "rules" to follow, even down to telling us precisely which foods to eat. Don't you just hate those little sheets of "the right foods" that doctors hand out. Women aren't stupid. We know the difference between a brownie and an apple. What we don't know is why we feel compelled to eat the brownie instead of the apple. This book tells us WHY WE GAINED WEIGHT and how we can use this information to get thin. A refreshingly honest book that's long overdue. I'm already becoming the scientist of my own body, I've lost 23 pounds in two and a half months -- and this time I'm keeping them off because I have THE POWER. My husband (my best cheerleader) tells me, "You go, Girl!" And I have!!!

More Than A Dieter's Cheating Guide

In addition to being a wonderful Dieter's Cheating Guide, this exceptionally well written book presents a very practical real world diet. I define a real world diet as one that is:

Easy to follow, practical and safe

Based on correct principles

Results in lost pounds in the near and long term

Compassionate and understanding of human nature

Some facts of life are not pleasant, such as the fact that a gram of fat contains more calories than a gram of protein or carbohydrate. Yet within such constraints Dr. Widroe offers the reader a way to manage her/his eating habits without sacrificing one's favorite foods and without the tedium of counting calories or taking on boring tasks. Further, the book is downright interesting with realistic accounts along the way that help solidify your understanding of his points.

A thoughtful, step-by-step guide to reforming one's eating habits

Psychiatrist Harvey J. Widroe, M.D. presents The Smart Dieter's Cheating Guide: Eat and Watch Pounds Melt Away, a guide to losing weight on a long term basis - rather than short-term dieting, which simply forces the body into starvation mode and prompts it to quickly regain any lost pounds. Chapters address how to use "controlled cheating" that substitutes small, regular filling snacks for out-of-control binging; which foods should be avoided and what to substitute for them; why weight control clubs don't work (they fail to take into account that dieters are inherently and biologically cheaters); why all-protein diets are extremely harmful; and much more. A thoughtful, step-by-step guide to reforming one's eating habits in a manner that not only encourages good nutrition but also takes natural and sudden cravings to "cheat" into account.

Finally, a diet book that lays out a sustainable plan and gets to the roots of the psychology of, first, overeating, but more importantly, learning to eat properly! The Smart Dieter's Cheating Guide provides powerful and specific psychological tools for controlling your food intake. It starts with the premise that all dieters are cheaters, and there's no use fighting it. What Dr. Widroe proposes is a fundamental shift in perception that helped me to burn calories instead of emotional energy. "Effective cheating" might sound like an oxymoron when applied to dieting, but this real-life approach carries the heft while you lose it. I really found it very helpful, and as a food writer, I'm constantly in the way of temptation.

This is the "diet" book I've been waiting all my life for--easy to read, informative and above all, practical. Dr. Widroe confronts the myths and dilemmas that face a dieter. He is an author who understands human nature and gives examples on how a dieter can cheat smartly in a variety of social situations. I highly recommend this book.

Diet Cheaters Go to the Head of the Class

Finally, a diet book that punctures the myth that the countless stream of diet books are full proof methods for weight loss. Psychiatrist Dr. Harvey J. Widroe, after many years of studying diet programs his patients had been following, invariably found that success was fleeting and failure the norm. From that starting point, he conceived a down-to-earth and sensible pathway to dieting.

"The Smart Dieter's Cheating Guide: Eat and Watch Pounds Melt Away," by Harvey J. Widroe, M.D., with Ron Kenner, makes the case that people are only human and easily given to temptation. Widroe's innovative approach, with a focus on the mindset of the dieter, allows the dieter to cheat-- but cheat smartly.

This is not a crash program that excludes any one food group. Widroe allows you to have your cake and eat it, too; in lesser portions of course. But his strategy is anything but simplistic. It involves such things as shrewd restaurant ordering, and planning rewards in advance. In one chapter, How to eat Effectively, the reader is given space to write in his or her current cheating list and then devise a new, improved cheating list. There is fun to be had in candid confession. Perhaps most unique to this work are the human vignettes, where we get into the lives of husbands, wives and friends, as they confront the diet challenge and learn how to reap the benefits of smart cheating.

This is a diet book for the thinking person who doesn't want to obsess over calories, nor suffer the sin of giving in to temptation. In appealing to our ability to conquer weight loss through the use of our own psychological tools, Widroe has turned an old axiom on its head: Cheaters can prosper--but only by being honest with themselves.
