I've heard the rest and now I've read the best. Mr. Spiess's knowledge and understanding of the human condition is remarkable. His plan for living is so simple, but yet, profound in its effectiveness. I cannot wait to share my story with him at one of his book signings.

I hit 300 pounds and frankly was lazy. Jeff got me off the couch and doing what I needed to do! After 6 months on his plan I have dropped over 50 pounds. His plan is now my plan and I don't even feel like I am on a "diet" anymore.

Jeff, I freakin' love you, man!

When I picked up this book, I knew right away I was taking advice from a genius. I was 260 pounds in October of 2003 and I am proud to say that because of this life changing book I am 185 pounds in September 2004. Jeff helps you tackle cravings, overeating, and overall life issues. Part of the reason his methods work so well is because he was there, he knows what it is like to be out of control and consumed with personal demons. His formulas are simple, yet complete. The steps included are like a wonderfull teacher that lets you learn on your own. Great Read.

I saved over $100 on food the first week alone. Reading these words has set me free. Jeff, you are my hero and an inspiration for the masses. How did you do it? Where did you come up with it? You have empowered me to see beyond the fat and face the truth. Everyone should be required to read this book....the truth is powerful.

This book is an easy-to-read and easy-to-follow guide for healthy eating. The many lists, boxes with pertinent facts, and personal anecdotes from the authors make it very interesting. I like that the authors are both credentialed nutrition professionals with many years of practice in the field of nutrition. This book is sound advice that can be practiced for a lifetime - it is not a fad or something that you can do for just a few weeks and then it will be impractical. The plan described in this book is based on scientific literature and is sensible. If you are looking to make a permanent change in your health and eating, this is the book for you.

I've been meaning to pick up a copy of this book for a while. I always hesitated because I figured it would be just another one of those "diet books" that would end up collecting dust on my bookshelf. Not this book. This is any excellent book that actually makes eating better fun. The first thing you do is take a quiz which helps you figure out your main personality type + sub-types. You then follow an eating plan that works best for your personality. The amount of calories you can eat also depends on some various factors such as age, activity level, etc. and another small quiz is provided to help you to figure this out as well. I like how the author recognizes that we're all different. Some people need to eat mini-meals all day long where other folks need a diet made up of sensuous meals or gourmet type fare. Whatever your inclination, you will find a plan that will work for you in this book.

THE BEST TOOL TO RE-TEACH YOURSELF HOW TO REALLY EAT.

I LOVE THIS BOOK. IT COMES WITH ''POP-OUTS'' THAT HAVE HELPED ME TO ACTUALLY SEE WHAT I'M PUTTING IN MY MOUTH. THE FIRST WEEK I USED THE "POP-OUTS", I FOUND I WAS EATING FROM 500-1000 CALORIES PER DAY(NO WONDER I WAS STEADILY GAINING WEIGHT!). I WAS SURPRISED AT HOW WE LET FOOD MANUFACTURES, RESTAURANTS, AND OURSELVES OVER- INDULGE BY EATING THE WRONG PORTIONS. I NO LONGER SUPERSIZE MY FOOD, AND I TAKE HOME AT LEAST TWO PORTIONS IN A DOGGIE BAG WHEN I EAT OUT. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO HAS FORGOTTEN WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO EAT THE CORRECT PORTIONS. THIS BOOK IS FILLED WITH EXCELLENT INSTRUCTIONS. TIPS, AND YUMMY RECIPES. BUY THE WAY, THE SECOND, THIRD, AND FOURTH WEEKS OF USING THE ''POP-OUTS'' (TO RETRAIN MY MIND TO EAT THE CORRECT PORTIONS) I LOST A TOTAL OF 15 POUNDS.

This book helped me to lose 55 pounds!

I've read many diet & nutrition books over the years, looking for help in overcoming my life-long battle with excess weight. This book finally did it for me! While the eating program included in the book is similar to other healthy, low-fat diets, it was the REST of the book which got me inspired. Using a series of questionnaires, Wiatt guides the reader to an identification of his or her own "eating personality." The premise is that different personality types face different challenges to healthy eating, and need to structure their diets accordingly to succeed. This book is fun to read, and quite compelling. I not only enjoyed the read, but I've also enjoyed putting the plan into action...the first diet I've ever been on that doesn't FEEL like a diet!

I happened upon this book after my mom bought it and it's been one of the first pieces of comprehensive eating advice I've ever encountered. The author sets you up with tips for how to eat sensibly, and I've become a lot leaner since following her advice. The personality styles thing is a bit corny at first, but the approach is so gentle and effective that it's become my little food bible. Most importantly, the author enables you to make healthy eating second nature in a very enjoyable, uncontrived way.

A very refreshing look at eater personalities!!

I found Carrie Latt Wiatt's book lastnight and had to pick it up. I am a sucker for any kind of diet plan or panacea. So I bought it and started to read it right away. Immediately, I felt a sense of relief in reading what I read on each of the different personalities of eaters. Mrs. Wiatt doesn't try to fit everyone into one category because she knows, from years of study, that everyone eats differently and therefore relates and uses food in different manners.

I do hope to be able to use the simple to follow plan she has formulated for my "food personality." Many people have been successful by following Carrie Latt Wiatt's advice and I am inspired to believe I will be successful too!!

I love this book and believe it will help relieve other people who get stressed out by their personal battles with food, weight, body image and the diets that don't work.

This is not a diet book. It is a book that deals with the heart of why we eat the way we do and re-directs our focus on HOW to eat for nourishment and rejuvenation, as well as, complete health and well-being. END

For Anyone with Weight Issues

I generally do not admit that I am obese and have been for most of my life nor do I write reviews. I do not think of myself as having an eating disorder as I am definitely not anorexic nor am I bulimic. However, I noticed that binge eating was included so I purchased this book.

Having read it from cover to cover, I would recommend it to anyone with weight issues. At a time when the news reinforces guilt in regards to obesity, this book does just the opposite. The author is compassionate and obviously knowledgeable. She examines the issues behind the eating (or non-eating) without blame and many of her points resonated for me. I was left feeling I could find an easier way to deal with life. That it would take work and committment but not dieting or will power.

It's been nearly two months since my first reading and I have found myself continuing to think about why I am eating and what I might do about why I am eating or, at least, instead of eating. I'd like to thank Susan Schulherr and let her know I'll be looking forward to another book.

If you're suffering from an eating disorder, care about someone who is, or even happen to be a mental health professional like myself, who'd like a state of the art sense of what's happening in the world of eating disorders, you've come across a gem of a book. Extremely comprehensive, practical, realistic, user friendly & hopeful, this book is a real find. The only thing that doesn't feel right about it is the words "for Dummies" in the title. Although she's wonderfully clear & easy to understand, the author is no dummy. And anyone who appreciates the wisdom of years of experience & even handed presentation of helpful information, as well as the wealth of resources, is no dummy. One of the many great aspects of the book is it's consciously designed so you don't have to read it from cover to cover, you can easily pick & choose what is of interest to you & feel like you've gotten exactly what you wanted from the book. If you could only select one book on eating disorders, this would be the one to choose.

Down-to-earth Wisdom on Eating Disorders
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-22
This book is not only filled with practical down-to-earth wisdom on steps to take if you or a loved one suffers from an eating disorder, but the author makes us smile and laugh in the process. For example, she compares the person with an eating disorder to a magician--"who gets us to look over here" (at the food behaviors and fixations) "when the real action is over there" (with the difficult emotions or life problems the ED person vainly attempts to soothe or solve with food). Or, "it takes a village to create and eating disorder"--the author's way of introducing us to the cultural forces encouraging women and more and more men to become thinner and thinner contributing to the rising toll of eating disorders. Or, "what happened to make us think being thin is naturally superior?" Great question!

The author helps us visualize recovery as a process of integrating balanced eating without 'forbidden foods' or food restriction diets, attention to enjoyable exercise and your body's own set-point, and avoiding the mental minefield of thoughts like "everything will be better when I'm thin". She's not afraid to tell us that willpower "never works with eating disorder symptoms".

As a pychotherapist who often encounters eating issues in my practice, I wholeheartedly recommend Ms. Schulherr's book to anyone who wants to find hope for recovery from an eating disorder, and also to professionals in the field who would like a comprehensive guide to eating disorder symptoms, and treatment options.

What a superb and greatly needed book this is !! Ms Schulherr has written a complete, comprehensive, thoughtful and incredibly well organized explanation and exploration of eating disorders. Her book is easy to read and anticipates every possible question one might have about all aspects of eating disorders. Although she is direct and does not soft pedal the facts, she also presents her information in a form that is digestable (no pun intended) and useable. The serious scholarship employed in writing this book is evident. Clearly, an enormous amount of research and experience went in to writing it. Yet, it is human and reassuring; you feel Ms Schulherr is holding your hand and walking you through your reading. This book is a must for anyone with concerns about eating disorders or who is concerned about someone who might be struggling with one.

This book was very instrumental in helping my husband and I lose 45lbs and 70lbs, respectively. The recipes don't take any more time or any more equipment than regular meals and they explain what they are replacing and why. The tips are fantastic and many of these dishes can be made ahead of time and reheat well. My favorite pleasure is the strawberry frozen yogurt (made directly in your food processor and ready to eat!)

I've barely gotten into the book and I'm already impressed. The book is organized by course, salad, soup, pizza/pasta, etc. Each tip is accompanied by at least one recipe. There's a lot of great ideas I never thought of. Some are pretty standard, like using evaporated milk to substitute for cream, but she also suggests using roasted eggplant or garlic to replace a lot of the fat in recipes. I'm not really working on getting rid of all the fat in our diet, but my husband and I are trying to replace a lot of the animal and dairy products with more veggies. Cutting out dairy alone has helped me lose almost 20 pounds. But even if you're a confirmed dairy/meat eater, there's still lots of ways to cut the fat in this book. I really recommend it.

I have to say that as far as "diet" books go- this is the best one out there. A lot of the books just talk about how much weight people have "lost" and what have you, but this one actually explains how the body works and you can understand how you're losing weight. Every time I pick it up I learn something completely new. It's pretty brief, however. I think there needs to be a second edition with about 100 more pages.

Food for work, food for play, food for the rest of the day

Review Date: 2006-01-04
This catchy phrase was a quote by one Evolution Dieter as reported in the section called "Appropriate Your Diet." It is a perfect explanation of this common-sense diet that challenges the reader to deny cultural and physical influences and return to a healthier, more natural style of eating.

The premise is simple: eat the way our bodies were designed to eat. To do this, we must know a little about the human body and what it needs to function properly. The author explains this without getting bogged down with scientific terms and equations. We must also know how our culture influences our diets, in large part so that we can know how not to eat. Morse shows us what a `culture-less diet' would look like and then shows us how such a program can be followed.

The Evolution Diet excels where similar historical diets fail in that it emphasizes not only what to eat, but when and how to eat those foods. For instance, if we're preparing for bed, there is no reason to eat a large bowl of ice cream and chocolate syrup. That kind of food is designed to energize and if one eats it before bedtime, sleep will most likely be hindered. Eat that before working out if you have to eat it at all. At night, eat a hearty steak that is designed to rebuild exhausted muscles and bones, a process that consequently makes you tired. Throughout the day, keep the metabolism going (and avoid falling asleep at work) with low sugar, high fiber ("LoS Hi-Fi") foods like crackers, grains, or some vegetables. In short: "food for work, food for play, and food for the rest of the day."

It's a formula that just makes sense and, after a few weeks of eating this way, makes you wonder how in the world you used to eat five strawberry waffles and syrup before sitting in front of a TV all day.

I have a pretty good diet so I've never really been interested in diet books. I picked up the Evolution Diet because it promised to be more than just a way to lose a few pounds. It didn't let me down.

I found the Evolution Diet to be filled with bite-sized nuggets of fascinating material that kept me inspired to live healthy and laughing throughout. Of course, there are the typical easy-to-use concepts for weight watchers, but I think the main benefit of this book is the wisdom the author offers on what the body is, how the body responds to the foods we eat, what makes us eat what we eat, and good reasons for making your own diet a healthy one. More than a diet book, The Evolution Diet is a complete and still brief tour of the cognizant, healthy lifestyle.

This book is second only to having Steve Halls as a coach, and with the same practical realistic approach and a touch of the humour. Many people will benefit from this book with its mixture of advice on food, lifestyle and exercise along with a structured exercise programme you can adapt to suit your situation. I found good reminders of what I know and forget as well as new information. Just imagine how much money you'll save by buying this book and following the exercise programme instead of paying for a gym membership, or how much more effective your gym membership will be... either way it's an excellent companion that will help you make the transition from couch potato to your fittest state in three months

Steve Halls served in the British Army for over 23 years. He also gained a Premier Diploma in Fitness and Traing and Sports Therapy. Later he began a career in Personel training and working with people with special medical needs. Steve Halls can even brag about being a Fitness Director of The Academy of high Achievers. Along with that, Steve Halls is using some of his time passing his teachings on through public speaking all over the country. Steve Halls is definitely the kind of person this world can benefit from.

"The FBI (Fit Body Initiative)" book was brought to my attention via the author himself, due to my involvement in regards to self-esteem issues and fitness."THE FBI" book is very well written and easy to follow for every walk of life or level of fitness. Which in turn makes this a very compatible book to live by. The pictures used to illustrate the instructions are very clear and easy to understand. Steve Halls manages to get back to basics in his teachings of fitness and diet. He pulls no punches and creates no illusions. Steve keeps his book real and possible for all. A must these days with all the unrealistic expectations out there. "The FBI "book definitely does what the author has set out to do. Steve Halls brings the importance of fitness and positive self-esteem together through his teachings. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is searching for a way that will help them stay their course in motivation and success. "The FBI" is available for purchase. Click the book cover below.

Steve really knows his stuff and I have a lot to thank him for, as my personal trainer. I have lost two stone with his help and I'm currently preparing for the Potteries Half Marathon.
I couldn't have contemplated doing that without Steve. His enthusiasm and expertise translates perfectly to the pages of this book, so I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their general level of fitness.
I know people who have lost weight just by reading it! That's because it also offers advice on diet and nutrition.
It really is an all-singing, all-dancing fitness guide, and it would make the perfect gift for anyone who doesn't want to fork out hundreds of pounds for a gym membership they'll use once or twice in a year.

This is an outstanding fitness book. It is very comprehensive and very clear. The photos and the way in which it has been written make it very easy to know how to carry out the exercises and the encouraging comments along the way and the 'hard truths' that are put to you straight really help you to keep your mind on where you are going.
I recommend this book as a 'must have' for anyone serious about increasing their health and fitness to live a long and happy life.

As usual, Annemarie Colbin's voice of reason brings hope to a field of health awareness where hype and misinformation dominate. This book is fascinating and, like her other books, forces one to THINK about the things we put into our bodies every day. The approach she proposes is unconventional to most Americans but please don't dismiss it. Remember, osteoporosis is thriving in the countries (like ours) where dairy products are freely consumed by the majority. Give this book a read and you won't be sorry!

This is well documented and extremely well written, very fluid. I'm a veg so I would have wanted a meatless book, so I have to skip over the blood & bones parts to get to info I can use. I see a lot of meaters with the endless broken hips and bones so I can easily do without the traditional way down that rat hole. I have a few other books of hers which are more oriented in my direction and am hoping her next book on bone health coming in Feb is more on my wavelength.

Excellent resource for strengthing our bones!

I feel very fortunate to have found this very enlightening book about the very serious ailment facing, mostly, the women of our society: OSTEOPOROSIS. Relying on her own family's years of natural bone health, she gives the reader many facts and field results on the "Nutritional Aspect" of treating, and improving our bones throughout our lifetime. Her 60+ recipes are original and sometimes very unique, giving a very encourageing start to, hopefully, a new awareness and lifestyle. I have greatly enjoyed reading, learning, and following her many examples and suggestions, and fixing her recipes...I know I feel better already. Please read this book, you owe it to yourself, and the ones you love!

Finally something I can believe and follow

I am thrilled to discover this book by Annemarie Colbin about such an important issue for me and many other women of my generation. I have a heart problem so when my Kaiser physician told me I should take Fosamax for my osteoporosis I decided there must be another way. When you take Fosamax, it sends calcium to your bones. But, your heart needs calcium too. So, how do you know if you are doing more damage to your heart and other tissues if you take this drug? What's more important - my heart or my skeleton.

With the information from this book, I have a way to improve both my skeleton and be good to my heart. I like the way she writes - with good data, lots of resources and references, but in a way someone not very technical, like me, can understand why things work the way they do. And the recipes look great. I haven't tried any of them yet, but plan to, once I get my own book (I found this in the library). To me one of the most important points she makes is that calcium isn't the entire answer - it's all nutrients and the amounts of them that are so critical. And, every body is a little different in the way it needs to receive these nutrients. If your ancestors didn't traditionally eat milk products, milk probably isn't the best way for you to get the needed nutrients for your body.

I learned that maybe my joint and back pains might be from eating too many tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and peppers - these are nightshade vegetables and have 'alkaloids' which mess us the calcium metabolism. If cultures included a lot of these foods in their diets, they typically also included a lot of dairy products because "dairy and nightshades are opposite and complementary; if you eat one, you need the other".

I also learned that chocolate and "caffeine consumption increases the excretion of calcium (away from the bone) as well as magnesium through the urine, which indicates bone loss. Young women seem to be able to compensate for this loss and make it up faster through increased and more efficient calcium absorption from the intestines. Older women, on the other hand with age- and hormone-related calcium imbalances, do not seem to be able to compensate as efficiently, and are at higher risk for thinning bones, especially if their calcium intake is low." P34 - 35

She goes on to talk about studies of how much is too much, and if de-caf is an alternative (it isn't). This information is fascinating.

I plan to give a copy of this book all my friends and family.

Annemarie Colbin has writen a wonderful, concise and palatable manual for understanding the relationship between lifestyle and bone health. She systematically details the causes of bone deterioration and establishes a course of action to counteract its progression. I would recommend this book to anyone, practitioner or patient, who either has a family history of osteoporosis or will be older tomorrow than they are today. I guess that includes us all. Great job Annemarie!

I'm going to make some significant changes to my diet! I was quite surprised at the ratings on some of the food that I've been eating! This is an excellant book. It grades the nutritional value of the food you're eating and provides guidelines, based on what kind of diet you are trying to maintain on how much of a particular food, based on its grade, you should eat. It takes into consideration cholesterol, fats, salt fiber, vitamins and other factors that can effect your health.

The Food Report Card

Deciphering labels can turn food shopping into a real hassle for many of us. Thomas Yannios, M.D. makes it easier to decide which products to purchase in The Food Report Card. Dr. Yannios has analyzed the labels of thousands of foods, and compiled his results in a simple grade of A, B, C, or D.

"You can make an enormous impact on your long-term health, and even on your appearance," Dr. Yannios writes, "if you do nothing else during your normal food shopping but select the A- and B-rated foods, and leave the C's and D's on the shelves back at the store."

Dr. Yannios believes that atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is the number one health problem for many Americans. He says that "food significantly impacts" atherosclerosis, and that we can reduce the negative impact by carefully choosing what we eat. "People are confused," Dr. Yannios says, explaining that he wrote The Food Report Card to help eliminate confusion and enable people to choose foods that are good for them.

He has grouped foods into categories, such as beverages, cereals and grains, milk and dairy products, and meats. Each food within a category is then listed in alphabetical order, such as chocolate milk and vegetable juice in the beverage section. Foods are then evaluated by brand name. For example, five brands of vegetable juice are analyzed and graded. He maintains that pattern for each food category, analyzing 12,000 foods altogether. All you have to do is look up a specific food to quickly determine whether it is an "A" food that you want to consume or a "D" food you want to avoid.

People who want to choose the healthiest processed foods, but don't want to spend a lot of time calculating nutritional values from confusing labels, will find The Food Report Card informative and helpful.
