Wow - its like condensed orange juice! Clearly explains the how, what, why of healing. The chapter and chart on Price versus Value of supplements was the clearest and easiest explanation in a few short pages, that I've ever read. The doctors and pharmacists involved in writing it, deserve applause - first time I got the whole picture, along with clear and easy to understand information about everything from herbs to vitamins, flower remedies and everything in between. Dr. Pettles one page description on his natural menopausal hormone replecment therapy and natural choices versus the drug approach, made getting the book worth every cent! I copied the page for a friend, who ended up getting the book and showing it to her doctor. She said it was so simple and clear, her doctor stopped trying to push the drugs and gave her a prescription for Dr Pettles natural hormone replacement therapy - on top of that its working for her. Not since I read Mindells Vitamin Bible, have I read such a clear, information packed book! A must have for anyone interested in natural remedies and supplements - fanstastic value for the money. Incidently, I am NOT related to the authors.

Outstanding reference text for those interested in the REAL evidence for/against herbal medicine and botanical remedies. The authors provide detailed information on the history, traditional usage, laboratory evidence and clinical findings associated with dozens of herbals. The result is quite an exhaustive body of information that should serve as an authoritative reference text for any health practitioner or scientist with interest in this area. if you want to know more about botanical medicines, this is the book to get.

authorative and well-researched

A modified version of one of the herbs discussed in this book, Astragalus, was featured as a CME (Continuing Medical Education) course for physicians in the International Journal of Integrative Medicine, which is nothing short of a stellar endorsement for the material found in this book. If you want the best in scientific and evidence-based information on herbal medicines, this authorative and well-researched text is the best choice for both doctors and the educated lay person. As a practicing doctor with over twenty years of clinical experience, multiple credentials in herbal medicine, the author of the book "Viral Immunity," and numerous academic papers on herbs, I highly recommend this book.

One of the problems in the natural medicines industry is the lack of peer reviewed, clinically proven information. The book is an excellent reference for anyone working in the natural medicines field. We find it especially useful in cutting down research time.

Scientific, Fact-Filled Alternative Medicine Handbook
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-20
This is one large book (870 pages!), filled with massive amounts of information regarding vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other nutrients, and their effect on various diseases. Keep in mind this is a reference guide, primarily for clinicians, so it is not a book one would read through cover-to-cover.

The first section consists of nutrients, listed in alphabetical order. After each nutrient Null lists different diseases that a particular nutrient treats, backed by summaries of various scientific studies. He also provides the references, so one can easily look up the studies for him or herself. The studies come directly from scientific journals. For instance, looking under Zinc, we find that Zinc is beneficial for acne, and Zinc Sulfate and Vitamin A "significantly reduced" the number of papules, pustules, and infiltrates within 4 weeks. This is from a 1977 study found in "Arch Dermatol," i.e. the "Archives of Dermatology" journal.

The next four sections are: Herbal Superstars (well-known herbs), Additional Herbs, Therapeutic Amino Acids, and Essential Amino Acids. These are laid out just like the first section.

The next section consists of various fruits and vegetables and their phytochemical content. For instance, cabbage has over three pages worth of chemicals listed, from 1-cyano-2,3-epithiopropane to Zirconium (at anywhere from 1.4 to 203 ppm). Then Null lists each phytochemical alphabetically referenced to its therapeutic properties. Then he lists different herbal properties (such as "antiviral") followed by herbs that fall under that category.

Appendix A lists anti-aging nutrients (listed in the same manner as section one). Appendix B consists of recommended dosages of various nutrients and herbs. Finally appendix C consists of studies showing the potential misuse of supplements, and what overdoses might look like.

Overall, this book will be useful primarily to the clinician, but others may be interested as well. I am not a clinician, but interested in alternative medicine and the science behind it. No other health book has satisfied my interest as well as this book. My only complaint is that Null sometimes overlooks negative studies, but appendix C does remedy this to some degree.

THE Alternative Medicine Book!

Books about vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other supplements, such as those Mindell and others have written, are great. But I've got thus-and-so problem; what should I do about it? This book answers those questions. You've just been diagnosed with arthritis? Try the items mentioned in this book, plus the other suggestions (including the dreaded "eat less and exercise" :) ) Mindell proposes. EVERYONE interested in healing with fewer prescription drugs should read this book!

Buy it because it is worth it.

I've gotten to the point that I just buy anything by Dr. Mindell. Everything he produces is packed with good information that is understandable and usable. He also doesn't fall into that trap of just repeating what he wrote in previous books. Each one shows thorough research and an understanding of how these nutritional supplements are an asset to our health. A site that I have found which dovetails nicely with Mindell's research is PapaNature. I have used Mindell's book to double check their documentation and between that and their good product choices I have been impressed. They must have Mindell's books in their own library. Everyone should.

The Best Kept Secret
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 31 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-08
Everything You Need To Know About Enzymes is a book written by a caring professional who understands the body and how enzymes promote better health. He's taken so much time to learn and create excellent chapters and sections that offer people real life solutions. You would think that enzymes only help with digestion, reflux and GI disorders. But what I love most about the book is that Bohager doesn't stop there. He offers real life solutions which are simple (because you use enzymes!) to help you beat allergies, canker sores, gout, shingles, migraines, hair loss...even Lyme disease. He doesn't miss a thing and I plan to keep this easy-to-read book for many years. I've already begun on one of his plans and feel better already. I trust his advice, it's not designed to pitch a product, it's truly designed to advance one's health so read it with an open heart. This book is like the best kept secret, I wish I had it 10 years ago and feel that the advice within is so much more useful than conventional drug approaches. I need to read it again, because it's one of those books where you learn something new each time you scan it.

Keep this book on hand-it's a great reference to have to help you and loved ones deal with sickness in the family--it delivers valuable information that's fairly impossible to find any where else.

A great reference guide that is still easy to digest, even for a non-health professional. I appreciate the straightforward approach and the fact that its peer-reviewed - it is often quite hard to find truthful & straightforward information about supplements, both pros & cons.

Could not put it down!

This is the perfect reference for anyone that is taking, thinking about taking, or helping others decide what supplements to take. It is the first book to analyze supplements in a clear, concise, and highly scientific manner. I have already recommended it to my university professors, professional peers, and clients. I also recommend it to you!

An excellent book with documentation on the abuses of the FDA. Another literal example of one thing that is very wrong in our country. I don't understand how after all the exposure to the abuse that goes on it "just keeps ticking". The only conclusion is there is an incredible amount of power and money behind keeping this system going. To read about the suppression of vital information that could halt aids and get people into remission in unbelievable but true. Worth reading and waking up.

Finally, an honest and gutsy expose on the FDA's deceit.
