About 10 years ago, I became very sick and thought I was going to die. I took several diagnostic tests which came out negative. So I decided that I will help myself and did some research. By some stroke of luck or miracle, I received a brochure of this book in the mail so being desperate, I bought it and tried what was suggested for my symptoms. Well, I did get back to health. My symptoms disappeared. Thanks a million Dr. Wagner. I think I will buy another copy of this book since mine has become very worn out due to use.

I would like to know where to obtain a purtaneous distcotectomy as outlined on page 236 by Dr Wagner, to enable me to write a review.
Would it be possible for me to talk to him either through yourselves or myself?

I have read the book and am very impressed with Dr. Wagner's belief and success in alternative healing. I live in Australia and would be most grateful if I could have an address to write to Dr. Wagner about a problem that is not covered in his book. Could you please e-mail a contact address, if possible. Many, many thanks.

I purchased "How To Stay Out of the Doctor's Office" several years ago, and I am convinced the book has saved me thousands of dollars in medical bills. Wagner's book helps you to diagnose common physical ailments, and he gives natural solutions for healing. He gives precise descriptions of problems like kidney stones, gallstones, high blood pressure, cholesterol control, thyroid problems, multiple sclerosis, gout, tinnitis, yeast infections, ulcers, and diabetes. I have read some sections of his book several times, and I am convinced that I have avoided/cured gallstones, kidney stones, gout, and ulcers by following his advice. I highly recommend this book to everyone. (jsoverton@excite.com)

Three years ago I read "How to Stay Out of the Doctor's Office" and was so impressed with it that I contacted the publisher to find out where Dr. Wagner was located. Several days later he called me directly and asked how he could be of help. Since then Dr. Wagner has become our family doctor, and we have come to appreciate his straightforwardness in telling his patients to ask questions, to become educated in making informed decisions, and finally, to "take control" of their own health. I keep his book with me at all times and treat it as my "medical bible". Each chapter is extremely informative and I have used many of them to help family and friends with common sense solutions to their medical problems. Easy to read, its format offers the layperson a basic understanding of his/her ailment, what causes it, the conventional treatment, problems associated with that treatment, and then a "no nonsense" approach to alternative remedies that include a good nutritional program, vitamin and supplement support, amino acids, herbs, adjunctive remedies, and exercise regimens. Dr. Wagner is located in Philadelphia, PA. He has a radio program, "The Dr. Wagner Health Show" which airs on Tuesday and Thursday at 2:00 p.m. on 1540am. He has written another book, "How to Stay Out of the Hospital" which addresses the problems of orthodox medicine and offers many case histories. With Dr. Wagner's permission, I am including his office number for those readers who need to contact him: (215) 455-0717.

I was watching James Robison one day and Janet Maccaro was his guest. She gave an extremely intelligent review of her book, Natural Health Remedies, along with examples of its contents. I picked up her book and found the most widespread uses of herbs and natural foods with cures for almost any condition. Dr. Maccaro has spent hours of time researching and testing different natural remedies and has written a book so easy to follow anyone can improve their health.
The book is so well designed, you can turn to any condition or any section and get results without reading the entire book first. I would recommend this book to anyone having health problems, or just wanting to stay healthy. Thank you for bringing God's remedies to light in such an easy to read format !

With so many possible side effects possible from traditional drugs and remedies, I believe the best answers come from nature itself. I found this book to be very helpful and I will use it as a resource for years to come. Why treat the symptom when God gave us natural answers to treat the root of the problem.

Finally an herbal remedy book without the New Age hype!

I have been looking for an natural healing book but so many of them have so much New Age spirituality I could not bring myself to buy them. This book will give you down to earth remedies and uplifiting Christian veiwpoints. I found it very refreshing and informative.

This book contains quite a bit of health information that you don't get from your traditional doctors, although it should be that they read these books. Janet Maccaro's book is written in a simplistic way. A way in which it is easy to read and to understand. She also writes in such a way that you can feel free and safe to incorporate her remedies in your everyday living. They are natural and safe remedies. Of course, some of them you might want to discuss with your physician just to let them know you are considering, or are doing, a certian remedy that you read from her book. I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in learing more about natural health remedies.

I read this book while waiting to get in to see the MS Specialist to see if I had MS. I had never really paid attention to MS, at least the details of how it effects a person. As a person in recovery from alcohol and drugs, I wanted to see what alternatives exist.

I found the book full of hope. Got a good explaination of the disease and what it is. I like the fact that Dr. Bowling gives both sides of the arguement for a particular treatment and explains the type of studies done on it.

Once I got in to see the specialist, he was aware of this book and open to listening to my questions and discussing different alternatives. The MS Center offered some CAM mentioned in the book.

I had gotten so tired of all the internet information on MS, my brain was burned out. I had stopped reading anything on the subject for quite awhile. But, this book is worth keeping handy with its sensible and knowledgeable information. It also validates in many ways the path I had chosen to manage this horrible disease.

I LOVE this book!

This book was actually recommended to me by my MS Specialist. I'm SO happy he did. Too often, I think people believe everything others tell them about what something might do. This gives actual medical references about studies done with alternatives. It doesn't make bogus claims about what might cure someone. Instead, it offers sound advice about what might help or hurt your body. Not only that, it recommends what amounts of vitamins and other supplements one should take if they are going to use them. I'm a research FREAK and this is by the far the best alternative medicine book I've read. It's also the book I reference back to the most as I'm eager to see what else is possibly out there that can help with my disease.

People diagnosed with an incurable disease are too-often targets of terribly unscrupulous or questionable methods of helping or curing them. When conventional medicine cannot cure us it is, to some degree, understandable. Dr. Bowling has put together a well-researched book that briefly discusses CAMs and various therapies, including yoga, tai chi, dietary supplements, vitamins and so forth. Each is briefly described, treatment method discussed, any known scientific research is summarized, side effects noted, practical information listed, and a conclusion and additional reading sources detailed. Dr. Bowling does note that some therapies, while not proven to help those with MS, may seem to help because of the "placebo effect." If it causes no harm, why not try it? However, some of these therapies can be detrimental to those with MS and it is wise to know what those are. This is a book for those who want objective and documented information. Some will claim it is biased against CAMs or undocumented therapies, but I did not find that to be the case. I found it very helpful.

I tried to get pregnant for 2 years, without success. I purchased Hendler's book and made a list of what vitamins and minerals my husband and I could take to help with fertility. After 2 months on the vitamins, I was pregnant! I have also used other formulas of Hindler's, and they really work! It's also nice that he gives daily recommendations for what you want to accomplish.

This book was an excellent resource for me to decipher between the hype and the scientific data on nutritional supplements. This information held a lot of credibility for me because Sheldon Saul Hendler is an M.D. and a Ph.D. I used the information in his book and mapped out a nutritional supplemental program. It worked!! I felt more energetic and healthy. I researched this book on Amazon.Com hoping that Dr. Hendler had updated the information because so much has changed since the book was written in 1991. So, Dr. Hendler, if you happen to read this, I hope you are updating your book as I would love to read about the latest research on nutritional supplements.

This is a book that is written from the doctors view point, in other words you don't hear words about how a vitamin, mineral, herb is the next saviour of mankind. But when there is data supporting statements about improving memory or increasing energy or slowing the aging process etc, he will state it, and explore it. All in all, very informative, the only problem with this book is that it is 8 years old ( this was written at 07/98 ), although that does not detract from the data in the book a lot of things happen in this field in 8 years.

As we are all ultimately responsible for our own physical well-being, objective data is imperative in making informed health care decisions. Dr. Hendler's book delivers just that. I share the sentiments of the other reviewers;I signed on to Amazon hoping to find an updated version of this excellant resource. During this "herbal explosion", I have found the availability of objective and medical data on dietary supplements to be severely deficient. So, Dr. Hendler, if you're out there, we need you!

I bought this book on a whim several years ago when I started working as a high school teacher and was concerned about my increased risk of getting sick. This book is well written, easy to understand and very informative. Rountree describes each supplement and its effects in detail and also has specific supplement regimines to treat certain ailments. I can say that I have not had a full-blown cold in the last three years. Although the supplements can be expensive, what he recommends truly work! Buy this book and you will not be disappointed and if you follow his regimine you will rarely be sick.

I HIGHLY recommend this book! I had a sinus infection that would not clear up after three rounds of antibiotics-the most severe bout I've ever had, including losing my sense of smell. I followed the doc's reommendations for sinus infections, and within one week, my sense of smell began to return, and the infection finally cleared! Dr. Rountree is a genius! I am very grateful I decided to get this book-it is now my number one health reference. And NAC is a supplement that I will always keep on my shelf. Much gratitude to Dr. Rountree.

The fact that Robert Rountree is an MD who has practiced for quite some time makes me reassured regarding his suggestions. It's also quite relevant not just for general immune function but specific illness issues one might have at present. The first section is a fascinating explanation of how our immune system functions in our body. I have been on his general adult suggested dose of CoEnzyme Q and Cholostrum for almost two months -- I believe I am starting to have energy at the end of the work day! This is a minor miracle as I started to feel tired about 17 years ago ...no thyroid issue, no diabetes ever id'd with repeated tests. I credit these changes to the CoQ and colostrum. This is truly worth the time and expense for the information!

I bought the hard cover edition of this book about a year ago because I am very prone to colds and sinus infections. I read it but did not follow the advice because you seemed to need to buy so much stuff. This past spring and summer (2001), I got an endless and particularly exhausting sinus infection. I was miserable and I remembered the book and went shopping for supplements. I warn you the advice is not cheap to follow, however, the results for me were excellent. It took a few weeks to see results but now I feel better than I have in years--greater physical and mental energy. I caught a chest cold (complete with green mucus) in September and threw it off very quickly (within a week) without antibiotics--a first for me. I would not part with my copy of the book. Olive leaf extract, NAC, coenzyme Q10, alkylglycerol etc.--I take a lot of supplements every day now but they work. I have a huge shelf full of health books and this is undoubtedly the best one that I own. I literally live by it now.

There is some potentially wacky stuff at the end of the book, as the publisher warns you. It describes herbal and dietary supplements that are basically totally unregulated. Nothing proven about efficacy. Yet still readily available at health stores. So the publisher made the pragmatic decision to include some information about these items.

If you are a layperson to the medical field, be aware that those supplements are really a walk on the wild side.

I am a Medical Transcription student who is building up her reference collection. As a former librarian, I have always used the PDR for any drug reference questions I had. Complete with a Manufacturers' Index, Product Name Index, Product Catagory Index, Active Ingredients Index and Companion Drug Index, it allows the user to easily find needed information about any OTC drugs they may take or want to try. It also contains a Product Identification Guide with full-color illustrations, non-prescription drug information, dietary, herbal supplement and generic drug information and product comparison tables that let the user compare the active ingredients and dosages of common brand-name OTC drugs. This is a valuable resource for anyone in the medical field and for those who want to have more information they can discuss with their physician. Remember to always discuss any drug with your physician before using any supplements or OTC drugs; especially if you are on prescription medication. Drug interactions can sometimes be fatal when mixed.

From reading the book, it is apparent that this author doesn't just have book knowledge, but has been helping people with nutrition for a long time. It is not a deep, scientific book, but I would say more of a common sense and laymans explanation of what nutritional products work and which don't. Even though its easy to understand, most of the things that I was interested in such as prostate health, did have the references to the studies that documented which herbs help, which I like instead of just anecdotal information. I passed along the book to a friend who recently had an angiogram, since there is a good chapter on heart disease and how to minimize it once you have it.

A very good overview of vitamins and minerals.

A friend at work recommended this book to me after her sister helped cure her 5-year old son of candida (when Western doctors couldn't). They were never believers in alternative health care, but seeing was believing for them. I just finished reading the book myself, and made a list of all the vitamins/minerals I would need for what ails me. I went to the health food store, where the clerk was genuinely surprised that I had all the correct items listed, along with the correct dosages. This book also gave me suggestions for other books to read, which I have just ordered. The only criticism I have is the title: it seems to have been chosen to "sell" the book. If this book had not been recommended to me, I would never have bought it based on its title. The book has so much more information about working with your body and nature to achieve good health.

A perfect book with all information one may need re vitamins. The author writes about the changes in medicine, our risky environment, the damages from free radicals and even how stress affects our system. Stress depletes the body of nutrients, Vitamin C, B-complex, zinc and many others. He explains everything about all vitamins and their purpose, as well as other nutrients, the quantities we should take and how; all information about fat-soluble nutrients, water-soluble nutrients, mineral supplements like calcium, chromium, iron and so forth and their role. Dietary fats and essential fatty acids, amino acids and herbs all are listed in this wonderful beautifully written book. He explains when to take those supplements, their combintations, how to store them and how long to keep them.

Later on, he shows you how to set up your personal dietary supplement program, adjusted to your needs and way of living. It has a treatment program, if you suffer from a particular illness, which suppplements to use more.

It is a perfect book, simply written, not boring, stuffed with medical terms and once you 've finished it, you won't have any question regarding vitamins. Everything is explained here. I believe every house should get a copy of this book.

Recently the American Medical Association has reversed its previous position and publicly acknowledged that Americans do not get enough vitamins and minerals from our food and need supplementation. Dr. Michael Janson has been well ahead of the AMA and has known and advocated this position for years. In this excellent book Dr. Janson discusses the role of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in human health and discusses each important nutrient in detail -- including valuable and detailed information about both food sources and nutrient supplements. If you read this book and follow Dr. Janson's advice you will almost certainly become healthier and may well also live longer and in good health. As a research chemist who is well acquainted with Dr. Janson and his understandable, common-sense approach to nutrition and health, I highly recommend this book.

This book is the best "bible" of supplements for the layman who wants to make informed choices.

I first heard Dr. Janson on the radio, on the Mark Scott Show in Detroit in the early 90s. Dr. Janson inspires and motivates audiences to change their lifestyles, and focuses on helping individuals to achieve their potential for vitality and longevity. He has a unique background with training in both conventional Western medicine and alternative therapies.

I am not as enamoured of vegetariansim as Dr. Janson is, because I don't think it's right for me, however, his book allows you to individualize a supplement program that will help you to reach YOUR goals.

Use this book to help yourself tailor a supplement program that is suitable to your unique needs. Along with the book, take a look at his website and monthly newsletter, and let him help to guide you toward a healthier lifestyle.

mentioning this book to a friend has not made my reputation any better. i have had 4 people falsely accuse me of using steroids. what puzzles me is that my performance is no where near good. yet, i've been told that some bicyclists in our group are using steroids. i have never even considered using since i'm an amateur level at best.

What does creatin or anything else exactly does? Stop having false and biased advises. This book is a reliable database with good bibliographic references. First starting point before heading to any supplement store is to get your hands on this book. Guaranteed to help you spend your $$$ better there!

Only "drawback" (may I use this word?) is that many of the supplements are so "new" in terms of scientific research that even this book being recent there may be drastic changes in the knowledge of the product. Make sure you do your own researches (the internet is a good point to start) on the "newer" stuff where this book may become incomplete or vague.

Mel Williams is regarded as one of the leading sports physiologists in the US, and this book shows why. I've read many guides to using sports supplements and this is the only one I've come across that's balanced and well-researched. By far the best book of its kind on the market.

Paul Bergner is so amazing and his knowledge is just unbelievable. I own 3 of his books and I am so impressed with the amount of information provided. This book is great. I recommend this book to anybody who is health oriented and want to learn how to use minerals, supplements... the right way. Nowadays, too many people use supplements, herbs....however without realizing that too much or not enough can affect your health even if it is natural.

Extraordinary documentation of the decline of minerals in our food

Paul Bergner writes and extraordinary book documenting how American produce has systematically declined in mineral nutrients over the 20th century. From the strip mining of factory farming to the choices of less mineral rich species for public consumption, our food no longer contains what it used to. Since the 1970s, when the last government comprehensive accounting of the nutritional value of foods was published, mineral content has tended to drop by a third. Bergner shows that an apple a day in 1929 was worth close to 30 today in terms of minerals. Colloidal minerals, mineral supplements and chelated minerals are dissected, searched for hidden aluminum and compared to mineral rich herbs like nettles. Highly recommended.

A surprisingly excellent scientific work

This is not just another shopping-list of chemicals but an outstanding dissertation of the basis for trace elements and other micro nutrients in our diet and the reasons for the universal lack thereof. Besides its value as a guide to nutrition, the book provides insights into our biological origins, as a species, and shows how far from our "natural home" we have strayed.

Still working my way through this book. I find it very informative and useful. I've read through "Nourishing Traditions" by Fallon and Enig but found that they relied a little too heavily on Price's work. I like that this book uses more independent sources to put together the information. Definitely worth adding to one's collection if you are a book addict, especially on the subject of nutrition.
