Valuable reference work

Review Date: 2004-07-10
This book provides practical advice on the most effective nutrients to prevent or alleviate ailments, their best food sources and the daily nutritional needs. It also explains how vitamins and minerals work in the body and the symptoms of their deficiency.

The introduction explains in detail how they work, how to maintain optimum health, the particular nutrients that various groups are most likely to need, healthy eating and the ins and outs of taking supplements.

The next section deals with individual Essential Nutrients under the headings of how it functions, what ailments it can remedy, the deficiency symptoms of that nutrient, vital food sources and the recommended daily allowance. Vitamins and minerals from Vit A to Zinc are covered here.

There are also short sections on other supplements like Amino Acids, Co-Enzyme Q10, Acidophilus, Bioflavonoids, Boron and various herbs. Then follows an A - Z of symptoms and their remedies, from acne and allergies to varicose veins. It recommends which vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to use or to avoid for every particular symptom.

This very valuable reference work concludes with a glossary and index. I recommend it as a reliable and easy-to-use guide to help the reader combat ailments and maintain health and balance.

Biased and innacurate

Review Date: 2008-11-27
Hurley's book is poorly researched and full of innacuracies. When the FDA banned Tryptophan in 1989 it was because of problems caused by a single tainted batch made by one Japanese company. Up to that point Tryptophan was one of the most popular supplements sold in the US. It is very useful for treatment of insomnia and obesity. It is also very inexpensive since it occurs naturally and can't be patented. For decades Tryptophan has been included in baby formula--If there had been any problems with Tryptophan itself we would have known about it a long time ago. Recently, in the face of overwhelming evidence of Tryptophan's safety, the FDA has finally allowed it back on the US market.

As he does throughout his book, Hurley ignores the scientific evidence and crafts his own fictionalized account of History.

I spent a lot of money on vitamins and minerals before I red this book. It was an eye opener for me. Not so much that one shouldn't take any supplements, but to seriously look at their effectiveness and possible side effects. Easy to read and lots of information about the supplement industry that you might not know.

do your own research!!!!

Before condamning vitamins et supplements you should do your own research instead to read and digest a book without researching yourself.
I have a CHF (congestive heart failure) for which I was taking a bunch of drugs like Coreg, Altace, and others..... I was always feeling bad with no energy. My blood pressure went from 210 to 169 with these drugs. One day the doctor added one more drug and I did an allergy to it (throat closed up) and almost died. Since that day I refused to take any medication. I did a lot a research on vitamins and supplements and take ONLY THEM.... COQ10, L-CARNITINE, D-RIBOSE, FISH OIL, REVESTRATOL, DHEA, and some others.... GUESS WHAT..... NOT ONLY My heart disease is REVERSING, but My high blood pressure is NOT HIGH ANYMORE 128/78!!!!

So before thinking that because it is not approved by the FDA, vitamins and supplements dont work , THINK again ....

A Lot of Drugs approved by the FDA kill people everyday!!!! But they are approved ..... Why because if more people are cured than killed it work!!!! yeah great... but what if you or your love ones are among the killed????

THERE IS NO ONE MEDICAL REPORT AT TODAY WHICH CAN SHOW 1 VITAMIN OR 1 SUPPLEMENT HAVING KILLED DIRECTLY ANYONE!

FOR EXAMPLE:COMPARISON BETWEEN GINGER AND "CELEBREX"

Ginger's anti-inflammatory properties heal pain and mitigate the inflammation associated with arthritis, muscle spasms and rheumatism. This has been confirmed by research conducted at the University of Sydney in 2001. The researchers had stated that ginger may be an alternative to painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.

BUT :

Celebrex, similar to Vioxx, was approved by FDA in May 1999 for the relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and for the management of acute pain in adults. Similar to Vioxx, Pfizer (the manufacturer of Celebrex) has enjoyed multi-million dollar sales due to their television and print advertising for the drug Celebrex. As a result, serious concerns have been raised in recent months regarding the use of Celebrex, as well as the Celebrex side effects on cardiovascular health and the increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
According to Dr. Garret FitzGerald, a cardiologist and pharmacologist at the University of Pennsylvania and his team of researchers, the COX-2 inhibitor painkillers suspected of causing fatal heart disease may act by starting the process of hardening the arteries.
_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+++_+_+_

THIS DRUG WAS APPROVED IN 1999 BY THE FDA!!!!!! And now there is a class action against it

There is dozen of drugs like that........

I am not A DOCTOR and have no interest in any drugs or/and vitamins/supplements labs. I JUST WANT PEOPLE KNOW THAT VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS WORK!!!!! But dont buy the cheapest one over the counter. TAKE only naturals Ones. There is a lot of difference among vitamins and supplements so do your research.....I put some books underneath which can help you.....

Sensationalism sells books. It sold "Natural Cures" on TV direct media campaigns, and it sold this book - at least to me. Both are at extreme opposite end of the subject and both are misleading. Take your supplements. Do your research, don't over do it, just as you should not over do OTC meds and prescription meds.
I've been taking supplements for most of my life and exercising. At age 51 I look younger, feel better, work longer, and enjoy life so much more than those that have not followed this path. I would suggest that you continue to take basic supplements, avoid any Muscle and Body Building magazine recommendations (if you are stupid enough not to know that the results are from Steroids and not fat burners and whey, then uh, well you should read more). Be careful with herbs, but know that there are herbs that predate the pharmacy industry and are proven safe, effective and we know how they work. Look at Lunesta vs. Valerian for example. Do your research be smart, buy vitamins from a reputable store and a reputable company.
BMX Extreme sports are dangerous, but I still ride a bike. I have lifted for 35 years, but have never touched steroids. A few people died from taking ephedrine based supplements, it's speed people! Don't exceed the dose and don't take it if you think it's going to melt your beer gut away by itself! Pick up a "Pill Book" or another medical book and become informed about everything before you put anything in your body. Look up the top 10 prescribed pills and be amazed at comments like "not sure how they work", "they may increase X production, but also they may limit Y production" We just know they work.
Vitamins are safe, many herbs are safe. If you are trying to regulate a mood with herbs, be careful. Sensationalism sells books, be it Barack Husein Barry Obama or Vitamins.
It's true it's a business. There is a profit motive duh! So buyer always beware and don't take everything on the aisle, just as you wouldn't take everything on the cold formula aisle.

Once I started writing in the Journal the effects were amazing. The daily reports motivated me to stay on the program and the results, noticable with every passing day have been wonderful. I've lost weight, feel great but best of all feel in control. I can honestly say that Dr. Perricone has changed my life for the better.

His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect)

It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.

His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.

And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.

Handiest and my best nutrition tool!

The Perricone Prescription Journal is the best tool I have ever used for a nutritional program and it has become as essential to my day as my home keys!! Not only can I follow a daily menu at a glance, but I can keep track of my progress as far as skin and body condition: (my weight, of course but important details too like my pore size and my stress level) as well as jot down my impressions and my feelings every day! Plus I love the fact that the book is light weight and spiral-bound. Extremely handy, full of zen-like sensible advice, I recommend it to anyone with a will to win the anti-aging battle!

I devoured Dr. Perricone's Wrinkle Cure book, so I was ecstatic about his latest book, The Perricone Prescription. His advice is so logical and easy to follow it was no wonder I shed weight and felt great, not to mention looking younger, too! His menu plan and anti-aging research is not to miss! The journal was such a helpful tool to follow my progress. That is why I have previously given up on other diet plans. This was easy to follow and successful, too! Thanks Dr. Perricone!

This book calls itself the "bible," and is listed under alternative health, but succeeds only in listing "cures" and remedies that have plagued Americans since they first started believing that everything has a cure. Read "Forget The Cures, Find The Cause," instead, and begin there before going to the "bible" on herbs and vitamins.

This is an excellent reference, written by a competent and unbiased MD. Though the source material is going on 6 years old in a field of daily change, this is an excellent (and inexpensive) starting point. For what it's worth, all of the material (now updated) with extra entries is now online via a link on the principal author's website [...].

Personally I enjoy holding and folding real books more than gazing into CRTs for the kind of study this material requires. For what it's worth all of the References for the older book and updated material are included in the online version. (Some earlier reviewers were quite affected by the omission of References in the print edition.)

What I liked about this text was its level of granularity. By this I mean, it wasn't too fine as you might find in a medical text, nor was it too coarse as you find in so many second hand texts these days. By second hand texts I mean books that are restatements of other books (rarely including the rigorous primary source material searches/reviews as the author did in this case). Thumbs way up!!!

Without the references, this book is useless

This book, theoretically, presents a compilation of the results of research studies carried out on a variety of natural substances. The simple idea of offering an assemblage of objective material resulting from investigative research is solid enough; the individual can then draw his or her own conclusions.

The problem is the lack of research credentials. The authors states that the references are not included in the edition because of their magnitude, but can be accesed online, or by a mail request. I found neither route viable. At the Website, I found that only a very few references were available for perusal. I sent an e-mail asking for clarification, and received no response. I sent another to the e-mail address given for the mailing request, and received the same silence.

These research studies are the driving force of this text, the whole backbone of the project. If the source material is not accessible, this work loses its professed value. Moreover, when did reference citations become discretionary? If background material is quoted, an available listing of that information bank is obligatory; if their inclusion creates a heftiness problem, perhaps a strength-training program should be an advised prerequsite for potential buyers.

While the information in the book is (supposedely) backed by a number of clinical studies, the references aren't included. The book notes that "so many" references were used that you must access them through a web site, which is no longer valid, making the material virtually useless when trying to compile a referenced piece. The administrator of the web site offered no explanation or apology (or any way to access the numerous references used). For that reason, I would NOT recommend this book. There are plenty of other resources on natural medicine that include their clincal references in the book.

I had been searching hard to find honest reviews of popular nutritional supplements. I learned far more from The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible than expected. The most helpful part was reading the hundreds of first hand experiences that honest, unbiased consumers have had while using popular diet, weight loss, and muscle building supplements. Plus, there are tons of reviews of just about every nutritional supplement on the market today. I now only buy a supplement after reading reviews of it in The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible. This way I know that it works before I try it and I am getting much better results.

The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible is an amazing resource that tells you the good and the bad about supplements through the experiences of people who actually use them. So much of the supplement information out there is thinly disguised sales pitches from companies trying to sell you a product, but this book is different. There are hundreds of reviews from real supplement users on everything from Creatine to Ephedra to St. John's Wort.

The book is organized alphabetically with dictionary-like headings at the top of every page, so finding the information you want is a breeze. You won't believe some of the horror stories people have had with supplements you can buy at any drug store. I can't tell you how much money I've saved by referring to The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible before buying a product. If you want to know if a supplement works as advertised, you need this book! I recommend it highly.

This book is definitely NOT worth the $. It has opinions of readers without concrete scientific facts, or even names to back up what they say. It is like being in a chat room. You really do not know what you are getting. I am angry as I blew $30 on a book that should be priced in the $9 range. My favorite supplement book was written by The EAS founder, Bill Phillips.

I have read most of Dr Klatz boks concerning human growth hormone and have tried many products over the past 7 years. I have used the injectable HGH called saizen i purchased from International Antiaging Systems online cheapest and most reliable source, and found it to be amazing stuff. For best results i normally use the injections every other night and on the odd nights i use ghr platinum antiaging formula available on Amazon. The ghr platinum works almost as well as the injectable. I tried doing injections every night and it caused mild side effects i didnt like and found i got zero side effects doing the injections on odd nights. When i run out of the expensive injectable hgh i just take the ghr platiinum every night as it is almost as potent plus i dont have to do the needles. The ghr platinum is the most potent capsule formula i have found as i have tried em all. Also use DHEA as it increases testtosterone. The GHR store online sells the platinum and dhea.

As the title suggests, the book's subject is protate problems and nutrition. However, the book is much more. It is actually an excellent reference on the use of nutrition and alternative procedures related to men's health. The author covers numerous supplements by describing what they are, what is known about them and based on available data if and how they should be used. He anticipates questions by providing information without excessive detail. The book is easy to read because of a logical layout with great use of type and color. I purchased the book looking forward to following their suggested eating plan, however, the receipes do not contain any information with respect to number of servings, calories, sodium content, fat content, etc. You never quite know if that Spinach Pie you just wolfed down was meant to be shared amongst 2 or 6 people. Because of this, I had to give up as I just don't have the time to calculate appropriate servings size, etc.

While the information in this book may be valuable, the poor arrangement of information and almost non-existent editing make it a difficult read. This undermines the potential validity of the information the author is trying to get across. I am left wondering if I can trust the message, given the poor quality of its packaging.

Sentences are missing words, or say the opposite of what they apparently are meant to say. The impression given is that the author is not a native English speaker but the bio in the back suggests that he is. Important information about nutrition as it relates to hypertension and to Dr. Braverman's program is scattered somewhat randomly throughout the book and it is up to the reader to pull it all together so that it makes a cohesive whole. The reader who is prepared to ignore the poor writing may get something of value out of the book if he is willing to work at it.

Braverman has done a real service to the millions of Americans being hurt by blood pressure drugs. He correctly points out that, while they do lower blood pressure, the side effects end up INCREASING mortality. Braverman gives good practical alternatives including nutrition, vitamins, and life style changes. He tries to be fair to the heart drugs and points out that the calcium channel blockers are the safest drugs and probably OK. Well, since he published in 1996, studies have shown that some of these drugs double your risk of cancer and increase the rate of heart attacks. Mark Kroll, PhD, FACC
