Prior to purchase, I was concerned this might be too "outdated" to be useful. I was wrong. Dr. Atkins was a brilliant man who shares in a personable way what is safe and what isn't--based on years of clinical practice, as well as personal study. Dr. Atkins years of experience can help you implement the plan that is going to work best for you far more quickly than starting from scratch. Dr. Atkins even shares a few pit falls to watch out for along the way, again from experience on a large client base over a number of years of practice. After owning this book for some time, I find the detailed INDEX in the back of the book is most helpful to look up that forgotten nugget.

First thing I do whenever my health isn't what I want it to be is look up what vitamins Dr. Atkins recommends and it what dosages.

It's never failed me. May not work as quickly as prescribed medication, but in the end has the same effect and a lot healthier.

Cannot recommend this book more strongly.

This book covers uses for various supplements that are not always covered by other vitamin books.
The information is very helpful, but a few things are a little out of date, mostly because of what was or wasn't available when the book was written.
Overall, a good addition to your nutrition library if you're interested in using supplements or knowing more about what certain nutrients do.

This book is still the best one out there....

I am a professional who has been reading and studying the field of supplements. This book is the best that I have come across. Not only is it the most complete, but the supplements in it were used in Dr. Atkin's clinical practice. This is were the rubber hits the road, and the concrete real life information that gives this book credibility. If I were to buy only one book on this subject, it would be this one, even over the encycolpedia type books.

This was an interesting read which covered healthy, and unhealthy habits for your brain. It is also a good resource for what supplements are helpful for your brain, and their recommended quantities and uses.
I have used many of the suggestions from this book to add supplements and adopt healthy habits for my brain.

Dr. Perlmutter is a board-certified neurologist and yet he writes in language we can all understand. If you really follow what he says, it works! And it is not a difficult plan to implement. So get the book, don't let it sit around and get dusty, read it, do it! "Try it, you'll like it!"

Here's one of the few board certified neurologists who will tell you he thinks cell phones and other electromagnetic fields are very likely bad for your brain. Too many others buy into the official pronouncements, and accept that it's OK to keep using your cell phone until the proof of harm is overwhelming.

This book has more useable information than any other I've seen. The remedies recommended are all impemented with ingredients you either have around the house anyway or else you can easily pick them up at the local grocery store or drug store. No eye of Newt or powdered antelope horn needed. The advice is sensible, simple and easy to follow. I love mine and plan to give some as gifts for Christmas.

It is easy to breeze through and then decide where you will focus and what are the best treatments.

This book provide a wide review about basic concepts that help us to understand suplements utility for each case. If you know why it is important, then you can believe that is important.

I recomend, specialy for those willing to prevent age related cognitive decline!

Good Information

Review Date: 2008-02-22
This book has good information, mostly on the supplements widely available in the U.S. (i.e. things you will find in supermarket vitamin isles). Some potentially useful substances -- specifically pyroglutamic acid derivatives, Rhodiola and other supplements that have extensive testing in Europe but not U.S. -- are not mentioned.

Also, despite referencing studies, dr. Sahelian relies on patient observations and his own experiences to a fairly significant degree. This is not necessarily a minus -- it is necessary when double blind, placebo controlled trials are lacking -- but it is something the reader should be aware of.

Overall though this is a solid introduction to the topic with a nice basic "brain science" primer.

Finally, I should note that one of the problems with health/supplements in the US is that there are essentially battle lines drawn with big Pharma on one side and the "Alternative" medicine field on the other. Unfortunately, both sides have many quacks among their ranks. Against this backdrop Dr Sahelian is one of the less biased sources of information on supplements, so it is easy to recommend his book.

This book has saved me hundreds of dollars, since I always cross-check claims by commercial companies that sell complementary products--and who usually provide artfully deceptive ways to make it appear as though vitamins, herbs, and other supplements are the "answer" to everything from arthritis to herpes zoster. Clearly presented with an impartial and reasoned conclusion regarding the efficacy of a vast number of natural healing consumables. It provides recommended doses when a product is given the thumbs up, and warns against common assumptions many of take for granted owing to media overexposure. When research is presented that purports to support the medicinal qualities of a product, the authors provide a careful analysis of the strength of the reserach, whether its been replicated, and whether other research has been done that has had less stellar findings. A brief history of natural products is provided whether its an herb used for thousands of years or a current fad that is prevalant in other health care systems, particularly in Europe. I do have ONE MAJOR disappointment, however. Where is the UPDATED edition? This book is now six years old; much has happened in the world of conventional and natural medicine in that time, and without such a reference guide it would require endless searching to learn of newer findings.

Truly an indispensable reference!

I feel it is very important that I have a good source of information aside from that which is available from the company for which I sell natural supplements. I'm often frustrated by the limited acceptance of herbal supplements and remedies in the U.S., especially those which are widely used in Europe, China, and other parts of the world. This book states "principal proposed treatments" (those which have been tested successfully in the U.S.) and "other proposed treatments" (those not tested in the U.S., but are often used in other countries). It gives details about recommended dosages, safety issues, medical interactions, etc. So far, it has provided me with information about almost every ingredient I've searched for, and has made me feel much more confident about recommending the products I sell! There is a section regarding health problems and the recommended products for treating them, then another section of herbal substances and their recommended uses. The information is alphabetized, with shaded tabs on the edges of the pages for quick look-ups. It is so organized and easy to use, it's not only the first book I reach for when I need information, often it is the ONLY book I need!

Robert A. Schulman, M.D. is well qualified to write on this important subject. I know that his knowledge is based on formal training, extensive research and continuous clinical experience.

The clear format makes it easy to read and quickly find the information I am looking for. For example, the defined supplements listed by title in part two are further divided into subheadings "What It does", "How It Works ", "How To Take It", "Look Out For This" and "What To Avoid". The medical issues in part three are briefly defined and the recommendations are divided into two sections, "What Should I Take" and "My Supplement List".

As an obstetrician and gynecologist, I can see referring to this source of information as I would other sources such as "Up To Date", the "PDR" and "Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation " by Briggs, Freeman and Yaffee. As a point of criticism, or perhaps more so a point of recommendation, a quarterly or at minimum a semi annually update of his work is essential. Perhaps Dr. Schulman can post these changes on his web site. An example of this is the absence of the more current information on cervical dysplasia, such as HPV typing and the most current information on the HPV vaccine.

This work has become a sorely needed reference for me. I keep it handy and use
It frequently. I have purchased several copies to give as gifts to family members, close friends and colleagues.

After reading this book I threw away my Colgate toothpaste and Listerine mouthwash, replacing them both with the Closys brand from Wallgreens. And the sores in my mouth disappeared! The book doesn't mention any of these brands specifically, but it tells you how to read the labels to select products that won't harm you. The book is a short, easy read that lets you know more than most dentists seem to know about how to keep your mouth in perfect condition.

This book takes center stage in our reception and treatment rooms! Instrumental in my clinical practice as a dental hygienist are the very points made in this ground breaking and prevention oriented guide to oral health. No more will I struggle to explain the connection of the health of the mouth to total body health. My treatment and home oral health recommendations have been aligned with those in this book for over 15 years. And I have witnessed the positive difference with my patients especially when the top 10 nutritionals for oral health are taken and irrigation with the Oxycare 3000 becomes a daily routine. Read it - Study it - and most importantly - Do it! Thank you Drs. Bonner and Mindell for helping us learn how we can improve oral health, practitioners and people alike!

The connection between dental health and several infectious diseases, plus heart attacks and strokes, is still not commonly known. Dr. Bonner's book clearly and accurately makes the case, as well as providing the remedies for those and various dental conditions. Dr. Bonner doesn't hesitate to list products and techniques he and others have found through years of dental practice to be safe and effective, and many that are neither. It's good seeing so much vital information packed into a compact, easily understood book.

This is the best book there is on nutritional supplements, and well-documented to boot. Buy one for yourself and give one to your doctor and any other health professionals you work with who have not caught on to the real power of nutritional medicine. This healing modality can no longer be tossed aside, as the 100 pages of research summaries in the back of the book show. I teach nutrition to physicians, and if there is one popular press book I insist they all read, this is it. Superb.

What's nice is that she gives you sample recommendations, so you don't end up feeling totally at sea. And you can take what looks like the right amount, not too many pills. Even so, if you are in bad shape, it's likely to be a couple of small handfuls.

It's possible that I am alive because of the earlier edition, after environmentally caused asthma made me really quite ill for a while. But good grief, I hate taking that many pills. And I was fairly smart about buying combinations.

Review Date: 2008-09-24
I purchased this book based on the high reviews that it received. Although it contains a lot of useful information on supplements, there is no mention of food allergies, which is curious, as they can cause malnutrition and discomfort, causing people to purchase books like this in the first place. There is a lot of valuable information in this book, but it does not stand by itself. I'd recommend a book like Dangerous Grains: Why Gluten Cereal Grains May Be Hazardous To Your Health or a recent food allergy book in combination with this book.
As a mis-diagnosed celiac, with autoimmune disease, I found out the hard way that wheat has no place in vitamins or medications.
I have gone on the advice of books like this in the past and if you go to the vitamin store and look at the fancy mega or ultra packs, you'll see that some of the most expensive ones contain wheat, and if you didn't know you were allergic to it, you'd think that you were helping yourself out by buying them. You might even feel better for a week or two, but unless you address the food allergies, you won't sustain it.
So arm yourself with the information in this book, but it is not complete information, and if it is your only source of information, you might not feel as good as you can.

Review Date: 2008-06-01
I bought this book based on the stellar reviews on Amazon. I'm very happy with it and refer to it constantly. I particularly like that the doses recommended are above and beyond the RDA, which is the MINIMUM needed for optimal health (the book cover says: RDAs "are designed only to prevent the most obvious deficiency diseases -- they are the 'minimum wages' of nutrition. RDIs are not adequate for anyone looking for optimal health." The book has handy tables for each vitamin and mineral and breaks down the maximum doses for optimal health. It also lists side effects. Turns out most vitamins are not toxic unless taken at levels that most humans really have to try hard to attain. Most side effects are completely reversible by simply not taking the vitamin any longer.

I trust this book over other sources because it has data backed by clinical studies from reputable organizations such as the American Medical Association and New England Journal of Medicine. Fro example, the book says it's okay to take 400-800 IU of vitamin E daily for heart health. I've seen other sources say it's too much -- presumably based on a study that the media jumped all over that said high doses were unsafe, but the study was flawed by several variables as they were not comparing apples to apples. I think when others recommend daily doses, they are referring to the RDA, the "minimum wage" needed, and not the dose needed for optimal health.

A Bully Grows Up: Erik Meets the Wizard

As the baby boomer generation reaches the 'new middle age' we search for new information to assist in creating a more healthy and viable future for us, our parents and our children. The connection between our daily environmental and personal stressors and our overall health is important. Studies have proved that stress has a significant effect on our longevity. As an author of a children's book regarding bullying behavior and frequent speaker regarding the topic of bullying and stress, I am keenly aware of this connection. This book offers a vast understandable quantity of information regarding our predisposition to DNA damage and offers easy to follow steps on how to hold on to or improve our health. A great navigational aid for our journey into the future.

This is a very good reference for nutrition freaks like me. It does contain a lot of practical examples, so it's much better than Dr. Atkins' book in that aspect.

For your health's sake - buy this book!

I can not say enough great things about this book! I have recommended it to several doctors and to many of my patients.

I only wish that it was one of the rec'd reading texts at school. Any new doctor would benefit from reading this info, and because it limits it's scope to the 20 things you most commonly see in practice, it is both pertinant and memorable. The info can easily be assimilated into practice, and does not require excessive patient compliance.

For the layman, this is worth having in your library. Many of your chief complaints are not treated well wih traditional medicine, and this book gives you the info you need to treat yourself.

Highly readable book with good information for everybody.

As an osteopathic physician easing into the arena of nutritional medicine Dr. Firshein (another D.O.) gives some great guidelines for me to follow. I have started some of my more difficult patients on some of the nutrients that he wrote about and I have had some good results. Nutritional medicine is a complex and developing field that Dr. Firshein does an excellent job of clarifying his top 20 hits. I have not come across a better book in this field...including Dr. Weil's work.

SUPERB author!

This is a highly readable book, chock full of the latest research on a large range of neutraceuticals, and includes numerous anecdotes of Dr. Firshein's patients' firsthand experiences with the curative aspects of these nutraceuticals. Read this book if you have any interest in herbs and/or vitamins and nutritional therapies. THE NUTRACEUTICAL REVOLUTION contains fascinating accounts of the healing and restorative impact of many substances -- glutamine, milk thistle, quercetin, lutein, flaxseed, ginko --- just to name a few!

If you think you will always have to suffer with PMS - read this book. If you have been unable to lose weight - read this book. If exhaustion has become part of your everyday life - read this book. If your family has a history of heart disease, eye disease, diabetes, cancer or osteoporosis (to name a few), and your worried that you will eventually be next - read this book. The amazing information in this book details how Dr. Richard Firshein applies nutraceuticals to the vast range of conditions that he encounters every day in his practice. He explains how the systems in the body work, and how by matching specific nutrients to the needs of the body, also impacting on the mind and the emotions, we can achieve new levels of health, regain our health and prevent disease. Many of these nutrients are available in the foods that we eat, but if we become sick, the nutriceutical (concentrated) form can be the best way to regain health, since the quantities of food required would be taxing on our digestive systems.(That's just one of the reasons.) In addition, there are herbs that are not part of our daily diet that have a wide range of healing properties for specific illnesses. This book is a great way to become truly informed and knowledgeable about the multi-faceted, powerful, healing world of nutraceuticals, and how they can help you and those you love achieve good, and even great, health.
