I found this cookbook to be a lifesaver for me. It gave me ideas on diet and nutrition I hadn't thought about before. Yes it tells you to reduce fat but not only that but exactly how to figure your grams of daily fat according to your calorie intake you need in a day's time, although extreme calorie restriction doesn't seem to be a factor here, but it emphasizes the importance of healthier ways to prepare your food and ways to substitute, probably ways you may have never thought or read about before. Some cookbooks out there are so harsh on fat and calories that you won't stick to making the recipes a part of your everyday life because well, the recipes are so bland and who wants that? I know because I've tried many and this one is different in that way. It also lets you know just how important some fat is in a diet and why. Fiber is also mentioned and if you get this book, which I highly recommend you'll find out just how important fiber really is to losing weight, etc. It even has a list of High Fiber foods, making it super easy to do.
I use this cookbook constantly for quick and easy meals. They obviously were tested for taste and texture. Isn't that something we're all looking for in a diet? You really feel like your cheating, but if your starting to watch your fat intake and exercise as I've started doing, these recipes in this cookbook, "Trim Waist-Not-Taste" by the way I LOVE the name of this cookbook, will help you see that is not really that hard to cook healthier meals to start to make a difference in your diet. The smoothies are great in the mornings as they're a meal just by themselves & I use splenda sweetner with these with great results! Most of the smoothie recipes are for 1 & 2 serving, which has been convienent for us. It also includes the nutritional data of calories, fat, and fiber and if your on the W.W. diet you know this is very needed to figure those points up. My sister-in-law has a copy and uses this book for that.
I've tried many of the recipes with great shock just how good they really are! Libby's Zesty Chicken Twist recipe is so colorful and pleasing to the eye and simply delicious. It's a meal worth savoring, beats the socks off one of those frozen dinners that we all who are dieting seem to be used to. This freezes beautifully and I take it with me to work and heat up in the microwave and everyone wants to know what smells so good. Only 15 % fat are from calories too. I've found many of the recipes freeze very well. The MARINATED POT ROAST is a recipe I use to make in my slow cooker while I'm at work and it's so tender and refreshingly good at dinner. If your into salads for lunch the TANGERINE SALAD is supreme with lots of fruits, lowfat yogurt and yes even some sliced almonds. I made it and shared with some of my coworkers and they wanted to know how to get the book! I also love the Grilled Chicken Kabobs, which I make on my George Foreman Grill & only 9% of calories are from fat. There's also a Non-Fat Topping for Veggies recipes that my whole family uses on Baked potatoes instead of butter now. The Lemon Fried Rice is a winner in my opinion. I've made the SPAGHETTI SALAD a lot this summer using lots of fresh tomatoes from our garden, a real treat on those hot days. Oh yeah the Fresh Fruit Trifle is Yum, Yum and so is the BANANA SPLIT DESSERT, it only has 87 calories a serving with 9% calories from fat and 5g. of much needed fiber. My whole family loved it! There are still many recipes I am going to try but so far I've been very pleased with the ones I have made!
Our doctor has recommended we follow a better diet and this book has been helpful and a realization to my husband and I that eating lowfat can be delicious and fun. I've lost a total of 12lbs so far while cooking from this cookbook and exercising 3 times a week on my glider machine, and my husband has lost about 16 lbs. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this cookbook, because of all the variety. I've found many recipes to use in my diet for a lifetime without feeling deprived. Some of them I know by heart now and use them all the time! I LOVE IT!!

I'm so excited to write this review to let others know these recipes in this cookbook are really delicious, without a whole lot of time and effort to make these lowfat recipes. I've been reducing my fat intake and I've tried quite a few of the main dishes and found them to be very easy without a lot of complicated ingredients, most I already had in my pantry. My cholesterol level is slowly coming down and I've even began to lose some weight. You just gotta try the recipes to know how simple and easy they really are. It's real easy to figure up weight watcher's points too. Without these recipes and the great tips I've began to use in this cookbook, I don't think I'd be doing as well in my weight loss plan, because my family likes a lot of the recipes too, so I usally don't have to make 2 different meals, because these recipes not only satisfy me but my family too. It's a healthy way to go. There's no guesswork about how much to eat because the fat and percentage of fat calories and calories in each serving is listed for each recipe. I recommend it to anyone looking for some quick and easy lowfat recipes to add to their lowfat menu.

There are so many good cookbooks on the market today that I assumed this one would be up to the contemporary standard. It is not. This may have some value to someone who has never seen a cookbook before, but if you're committed to improving your diet and have any experience at all, you won't find much help here. Just one example of what you will find: The way to lower fat content of foods? Use lower fat ingredients!

Many recipes seem quite high in calories, though perhaps they are "reduced fat." One recommended breakfast was a "Morning Sunshine" muffin and a Smoothie, total 570 calories. That's a lot of calories for a diet breakfast.

I bought this as a gift to my wife based on the recommendation posted by a nutritionist and one other glowing review. I was misled.

I've lost 34 pounds in 5 months, and have found the recipes in Volumetrics of greatest help; I am also addicted to Rachel Ray's turkey burgers and a few of her other lower calorie offerings in 30-Minute Meals. But just about anything professionally published that comprehensively lists nutritional information would be a better choice than this one.

"Walking in Divine Health" By Dr. Donald Colbert

Dr. Donald Colbert is the most educated and experienced doctor Ihave ever know in the areas of spiritual, emotional, and physicalhealth. He saved my daughter and my life more than once, and we bothlove him. The book mentioned above is only one of the many he hasauthored. They are written not only from a highly researchedstandpoint, but from a spiritual and emotional standpoint also; for weall know that our spirituality and emotions greatly affect ourhealth. Read and use this book. It could not only save your life, butit could change your life. Dr. Colbert can also be seen on histelevision show, "Your Health Matters" on the Golden EagleNetwork (web or satellite). My daughter Angie and I are traveling alot now, and we no longer see the doctor - but "We miss you,Dr. Colbert!" Sincerely, Pamela Lee Gibb...

My opinion on this book was great! It is full of valuable information, ideas, things you should know and do and what to avoid. The author came from a spiritual aspect and shared how to avoid cancer and heart disease, how to combat it if you have it, and how we get it, as well as staying fit and eating to good health. I have recommended it to many people who have picked it up and are reading it.

I find this an excellent book of recipes that take very little time. They are not only healthy, but tastier than most of my other recipes. I have been losing weight and eating great food following this cookbook - it is also easy to use if you are following the zone diet, or the Atkins diet (just add more oil), fits well into low fat diets as well.

Good tasting, good-for-you food.

My mother used this book and two others by Harriet Roth to help my father lower his cholesterol four years ago. My son was three then, and he loved the food, too. Lots of tasty recipes in Roth's books, along with some interesting commentary and common sense about eating and preparing food. Some of the recipes can be pretty labor intensive, especially for the two week diet that helps dramatically lower your cholesterol, but it does work - my father's level dropped significantly in that two weeks, and he lost 10 pounds, too.

I'm sorry that it's only available via used book sources (but at least it's still available). I've since moved to a vegetarian diet and can adapt many of the recipes to my current standards.

I ran across this book in a used bookstore and thought, "$4, no big deal." I'm currently ordering it for my family for Christmas. I'm not much of a cookbook reader yet I find myself picking this book up as I head to the bathroom for a long soak in the tub.

I've tried a handful of dishes and have been pleased with each creation. In fact, the left overs I bring to work result in comments such as, "what smells so good?" I love admitting I'm the humble (yeah, right!) cook.

One draw back has been that I didn't have many of the spices and grains as staples in my kitchen which has resulted in a bit of an investment. Additionally, some of the items I've never seen, tasted or heard of and I find myself frustrated as I comb the shelves of the whole foods store. But, I don't want to discount the sense of accomplishment when I do find an item. And, I must remember that all adventures take a bit of work.

If you are looking for a cookbook that will excite your taste buds, support a healthy life and spark your creativity, this is the book for you.

Nutritional Values Way Off!

Review Date: 2008-01-13
First, I like the format of the book as well as many of the recipes. However, when figuring out my menus, I do like to get a general idea of calories, fats and carbs even though I am doing low carb, simply because it is all important to me. I found the nutritional value to be off.

For example, Filet Mignon is something I make for special meals. The recipe as listed called for: 2 fillet mignon (no ounces listed) 2 strips of bacon and 2 tablespoons of Holandaise sauce. The calories per serving listed in the book were 1899.2!! So I logged into fitday.com and entered in all of the info for a 6oz filet with a thick slice of bacon and 1tbsp of sauce. For a calorie count, the site showed 680 calories. This was quite a discrepancy!

I have found many other caloric innaccuracies in many of the recipes. I give the book 4 stars due to this. Having to look up the corrrect nutritional breakdowns is iconvenient. Other than that, the book lists many good recipes.

Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook is chock full of very easy-to-make recipes of delicious low-carb meals. My only problem with this book (and most cookbooks) is that some of the recipes are for up to 8 servings (most are 2-4 servings), which is a bit much when you live alone. Otherwise, I will say that the recipes I have tried so far are great and I look forward to more of the same.

This is my all time favorite low carb cookbook. I use it more than all of my other low carb cookbooks combined. I've had great success losing weight on the Aktins diet mostly because I use this cookbook. There is a lot of variety and most of the recipes are quite simple and quick to prepare. I love the helpful hints in the beginning of the book. Some of my favorite recipes are the Mock Mashed Potatoes, Hasbrowns, Florentine Breakfast Squares and the Seafood Newberg, yummmm! But there are many many more that I prepare on a regular basis. My husband is even losing weight (and he is not dieting)just because of the great low carb dinners I prepare for us every night. If you are living the low carb lifestyle, than I highly recommend this cookbook.

I love how simple and tasty most of these recipes are. The Breakfast Squares are such a wonderful idea. They are helping me get to work on time while sticking to my diet. And the Beef Stroganoff is the best I have ever had. Every recipe is under 10g total carbs, which is awesome.

I bought the e-book version of this cookbook on AllRecipes.com and it's the best $7 I've spent on a cookbook. What a great deal! And I can automatically scale the recipes to the number of servings that I desire ... very convenient.

My only complaint is that the dessert recipes are made with Sweet-n-Low. But I've converted most of them to Splenda by using 2 tsp Splenda for each packet of Sweet-n-Low and they have all turned out just fine. The crustless Pumpkin Pie is fantastic.

I'm buying one of the author's other cookbooks today, Low Carb Creations From Lauri's Kitchen, which a friend tells me is even better. I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone eating the low carb way.

I started trying low carb living for my husband and I since we both wanted to eat leaner. So far this is the best low carb cookbook that I have been able to find. Some recipes are a bit high in fat, but you can substitute ground turkey for ground beef and the like. I know that you're not supposed to worry about fat with low carb diets, but I think that it only makes sense to stick with lean turkey, chicken, and fish when possible. Also, the author tends to recommend Sweet-N-Lo as a sweeter, I have used Slenda instead and had successful results. Overall, if you're a beginner or advance with low carb eating, you can probably find some helpful recipes from this book.

The recipes look good, and I enjoy the comments the author makes to each recipe.
However some improvements could be added to the next version:
1.It will help if some pictures of the dishes are added to the book to enhance the cook's appetite.
2.It will be useful to include an index at the end of the book and page numbers to each recipe in the Table of Contents.
3.It will be useful if each groups, and subgroups are organized in alphabetical order.
4.It will help a lot if the author adds at the end of each recipe some ideas of what else to serve with each dish, especially for the spouse that NEEDS the extra carbs, or just to complement the specific dish.

Possibly good for a beginner or non-cook...

But for a gourmet like myself, this book was a waste of money. For any gourmet LCers out there, I would recommend Deborah Chud's "The Gourmet Prescription".

I happen to object to the use of ingredients like flour or phyllo leaves. I am aware that in very small quantities, these items are "low carb", but I am also aware that refined grains are a very big problem for a lot of people who follow an LC way of life, causing insulin surges and/or cravings out of proportion to the actual quantity consumed. I am also aware that there are LC alternatives that could be used, and the exploration of those alternatives would have made this book less of a waste of money.

Additionally, the extensive use of cheese makes it difficult for anyone who is sensitive to dairy to make these dishes without major alterations. I know that most low carbers rely a lot on dairy products, but they don't need to be in every dish of every meal.

I have kept the book in the event I have a friend who may benefit from it. However, I do not use it myself... it sits and gathers dust.

Overly simplistic & over-priced

After reading all the reviews I picked this book hoping to get some ideas for low carb. meals/side dishes for my Mom. I was extremely disappointed.

Many of the recipes are very simple and obvious to anyone who does basic cooking. For example, cheese tortillas= cheese + buy (brand name) low carb tortillas. There is only one recipe per page and in at least 2 cases the recipe was repeated + one other ingredient and took up another page as a seperate recipe. Every other recipe book I have just tacks that kind of thing on at the end as extra serving ideas.

Many of the recipes also use Splenda (which was my reason for NOT buying one of the other books I read the reviews of).

There are some interesting dip and dessert recipes but little in the way of actual meals or side dishes for those on low-carb diets and looking for alternatives.

Basically this book is terribly overpriced for what it gives you. It's a $5/$7 value at best and if I'd looked at it in a book store I'd have only bought it from the $2 bargain bin. I ended up using 2 or 3 recipes and then giving mine away to my fast-food, non-cooking friend.

Overpriced, beginner book.

I own a bunch of low-carb cookbooks, most of which are bigger than this one, but the recipes in here are ones that I keep using over and over. Some readers have complained that there isn't enough variety, but when I look at the bigger and more expensive cookbooks I own, I realize I may only use one or two recipes from them, while this one has a bunch of yummy, realistic recipes that don't taste fake. (By realistic I mean recipes that don't call for odd specialty ingredients or for tiny amounts of some perishable item you'll end up throwing out.) Actually, if the only two recipes in it were the cauliflower with cheese and the kung pao chicken, it would be worth the price. For anyone past the Induction stage of the Atkins diet, this cookbook could well become the mainstay of your cooking repertoire.

Putting Together the Peices

Review Date: 2008-12-14
Robert Brown is a 'big picture' thinker. He takes hundreds of scientific studies on the essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6) and tries to put them into a logical framework that explains their effect on human health. What emerges is the hypothesis that omega-3 and 6 fats are fundamental controllers of many bodily processes, which we evolved to respond to as a signal of environmental conditions. Having looked at some of the same literature myself, I think he's right, at least on the first count, and possibly on the second as well.

The book is a mix of fact and informed speculation. There is a lot of both, which I believe is what the author intended. He is clear that his ideas are not all proven, but they are nevertheless thought-provoking and generally consistent with the evidence. Omega-3 and -6 fats are the precursors of a huge family of signaling molecules called the eicosanoids. The amounts of omega-3 and -6 in the diet determine in part the amounts of different eicosanoids in the body. Thus, the fat composition of the diet has a major impact on many bodily processes. Our current industrial diet is far richer in omega-6 than what our bodies saw until about 100 years ago, and it's probably wreaking havoc on our health.

This is what Brown points out, drawing from an immense body of literature written by people who have largely failed to connect the dots. I am a scientist by trade and I see this all the time-- people doing great science but being too stuck in their niche to understand the big picture. That's why people like Brown are so valuable.

The editing leaves something to be desired and sometimes the book can be repetitive, but you know what-- the author found an important issue, studied it extensively, and wrote a book to get out the message. I think it's a meaningful contribution to our understanding of nutrition and health, and I recommend it to anyone who has a basic understanding of biology.

Pseudo-Scientific Ramblings

Review Date: 2008-12-07
If you balance your omega 6 to 3 intake, you will solve most of your health problems. That is the hypothesis that the author tries to make into a fact. There is no question that proper intake of omega 3 oils as well as limits to omega 6's produces positive health effects. My dismay about this book is with the pseudo-scientific approach the author takes to make his hypotheses into facts. He takes information from tiny studies involving a few dozen people and proclaims such ideas as omega 3:6 ratios (and fructose?) being responsible for paedophilia, homosexuality, aggressive behavior, selfishness and uncooperativeness! The title of the book (... the devils fat) is typical of his style, he deals with the subject in a quasi-religious fashion, e.g. as beliefs. The book is basically a compilation of literature quotes, interspersed with the authors beliefs and weird hypotheses. The author is not critical of many issues. For instance dwellers in arctic climates with extremely high omega 3 intake should have little disease, homosexuality, paedophilia etc. whilst topical residents with extremely low omega 3 intake should mostly be aggressive homosexual paedophiles. Another thing that really annoys me is the author's showing off with complex chemical formulas. Two of these pages are totally unreadable as they are printed in extremely small type. This kind of information adds only confusion to an already complex subject. I'm sorry I wasted my time (and emotions) on this book.

Vegetable oils are the leading cause of the current dismal health of Americans. These oils, which are prevalent in just about every food you eat, break down in your body into a myriad of inflammatory and blood-thickening compounds which wreck your health. Every time you take aspirin all you are doing is trying to stop the damage done by these Omega-6 compounds. Read this book, follow its advice and get healthy. The facts and information in this book will truly make you think twice about what you put in your mouth and body. Misinformed on Chia Seeds and Chia Seed Oil.

I am not a scientist and my comment is based only on my own investigation using the internet and several books that I have purchased on this and other related subjects. I have also made it a point to seek out information from known reliable sources. I have recently been told that Chia Seeds and the oil from Chia Seeds are better than Hemp seeds or Hemp Seed oil, because they contain more Omega 3 fats and a better ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 and 9 than Hemp Seeds. I am not putting down Hemp, but from everything I have learned this is a true statement. The author, Michael Schmidt seems not to have discovered this or (I believe is misinformed). There is very little reference to Chia Seeds, and where they do exist, it seems inaccurate. Having said that, I do feel that the book is of value and he seems pretty knowledgeable in general, so I am still recommending the book.

I would be curious to know if others (perhaps more knowledgeable than me) would care to comment on the use of Chia and if the book accurately reflects it's true nutritional values. At the very least, you should do your own investigation. Salba Super Grain (100% Pure Salvia Hispanica L) - 1lb.

This book is a nice effort - very low-purine, low-fat recipes for ordinary people (without specialized tastes) who wish to minimize their recurrences of gout through diet. There are some odd features - an unnecessary avoidance of egg yolks and caffeine for instance.

But most importantly, there is new research on gout, published a few months ago in the New England Journal of Medicine and reported various places, such as Parade Magazine and Jane Brody's column - that suggests that the book is not really necessary. The research confirms that animal protein - especially seafood but also meat - is dangerous for gout sufferers. But it also suggests that vegetable foods such as beans, spinach, whole grains etc. DO NOT contribute to gout. This is very important information, as previous ideas, represented in this cookbook and other sources, have led gout sufferers to avoid very healthy foods unnecessarily.

What the new findings mean, in terms of cookbooks, is that gout sufferers would do well to explore the whole range of cookbooks for lacto-ovo vegetarians - a huge, wonderful literature. The highly restricted diet represented in this somewhat banal cookbook is no longer supported by science.

The charts for food that are high, relatively high and lower in purines is very comprehensive. The four tips that follow are interesting. The advise to consult a physician about diet is pro forma. After that, stop reading. The receipes redfine the terms bland and boring. The use of frozen vegetables is at best appalling.

I thoroughly enjoyed the information and the recipes. You don't have to suffer from gout to enjoy Cherry Freeze, Mexican Rice Cooler, Potato Chili, Almond Crisps - many recipes are simple wholesome fare that can become family favorites, repeated again and again. Tips for small changes that make a big difference, quick snacks and other tips come in handy. Indexed with a lengthy bibliography, sources of information and tables of foods. This is not for gourmet chefs, it is for ordinary folks who want to manage their disease by diet - simple, varied and delicious.
