This book reachs out and touchs your very heart and soul, dealing with my breast cancer I felt so alone despite a tremendous support system. Musa's book reached out and showed me I was not alone, she spoke so down to earth about feelings and fears. This is a do not miss book.

I've found many of the published, first-person accounts of women dealing with breast cancer to be superficial and/or self-congratulatory. This book, however, is just FULL of information and deep insight. So many of the thoughts and feelings echoed my own. The narrative flows smoothly from personal experience and intense emotion to important, accurate technical information. Each topic is presented with clarity and objectivity. Every woman diagnosed with breast cancer should put this book at the top of their "must have" list.

When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I wolfed down this book, for it reflected back to me my own feelings---anxiety, intense loneliness, wild uncertainty, fear of the disease and fear of the treatment for the disease, the weeks and weeks of living in that strange land of chemo and exhaustion---and also the "good" part of learning that I had a life-threatening illness: the sudden and sharp clarity of the value of life itself, the quantum leap in perspective, finding the fortitude to endure, and being supported by the wonderful travelers in the treacherous land of cancer.

After treatment, I read the book again, slowly, and discovered even more--not about treatment choices and pathology, but about growing in strength and knowledge through true, deep self-examination. The author is at times frightened, angry, disgruntled, searching, tired, relieved, elated and always honest. The writing is precise and engaging, the author always going a little deeper than most other writers to get to the truth of her experiences---and therefore finding what is common to us all.

I have recently discovered that the author donates all the profits from her books on cancer to cancer research and treatment.

This book is indispensable for women with breast cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the reminders are everywhere - it's practically trendy. Even Murphy Brown has it. Almost exactly one year ago, I had a mastectomy, and I checked Musa Mayer's book out of the library along with many other volumes on breast cancer. As I read it, I kept thinking, "This is me," and "I could have written this book!" She describes diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, and recovery vividly and convincingly. I was relieved to find out that she even scanned the newspaper's obituary columns, just as I did, in a morbid search for women who had died young of cancer. She went through the fear, uncertainty, self-blame, depression, and shifts in relationships that most women with breast cancer experience, as I know now. She assuaged her anxiety by seeking information; she dabbled in alternative healing methods; essentially she just went forward with her life on a new basis. As soon as I returned the library book I bought a copy of Examining Myself, to re-read and le

The FBI is brilliant! If Amazon did 90 stars I'd give it one for every day of the programme. This book is second only to having Steve Halls as a coach, and with the same practical realistic approach and a touch of the humour. Many people will benefit from this book with its mixture of advice on food, lifestyle and exercise along with a structured exercise programme you can adapt to suit your situation. I found good reminders of what I know and forget as well as new information. Just imagine how much money you'll save by buying this book and following the exercise programme instead of paying for a gym membership, or how much more effective your gym membership will be... either way it's an excellent companion that will help you make the transition from couch potato to your fittest state in three months

Steve Halls served in the British Army for over 23 years. He also gained a Premier Diploma in Fitness and Traing and Sports Therapy. Later he began a career in Personel training and working with people with special medical needs. Steve Halls can even brag about being a Fitness Director of The Academy of high Achievers. Along with that, Steve Halls is using some of his time passing his teachings on through public speaking all over the country. Steve Halls is definitely the kind of person this world can benefit from.

"The FBI (Fit Body Initiative)" book was brought to my attention via the author himself, due to my involvement in regards to self-esteem issues and fitness."THE FBI" book is very well written and easy to follow for every walk of life or level of fitness. Which in turn makes this a very compatible book to live by. The pictures used to illustrate the instructions are very clear and easy to understand. Steve Halls manages to get back to basics in his teachings of fitness and diet. He pulls no punches and creates no illusions. Steve keeps his book real and possible for all. A must these days with all the unrealistic expectations out there. "The FBI "book definitely does what the author has set out to do. Steve Halls brings the importance of fitness and positive self-esteem together through his teachings. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is searching for a way that will help them stay their course in motivation and success. "The FBI" is available for purchase. Click the book cover below.

Steve really knows his stuff and I have a lot to thank him for, as my personal trainer. I have lost two stone with his help and I'm currently preparing for the Potteries Half Marathon.
I couldn't have contemplated doing that without Steve. His enthusiasm and expertise translates perfectly to the pages of this book, so I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their general level of fitness.
I know people who have lost weight just by reading it! That's because it also offers advice on diet and nutrition.
It really is an all-singing, all-dancing fitness guide, and it would make the perfect gift for anyone who doesn't want to fork out hundreds of pounds for a gym membership they'll use once or twice in a year.

In the late '70s, an earlier version of this book changed my two-year old daughters life forever. I believe that then the title phrase was "hypoactive" instead of "hyperactive". I had an adorable, sweet, little girl that would suddenly go into uncontrollable rages. A neighbor happened to be watching the Phil Donahue show and told me about the cookbook that was discussed on the show that day. I bought it on Tuesday and by Saturday I had a new child. I explained to her that certain things were poison to her and that sugar would make her have what we called a "sugar fit". She, at age 2 1/2, became a helper in the process and would refuse any candy, etc. that was offered to her. She's now age 30, and still is careful about intake, staying aware of how foods affect her. She has never, ever had another "sugar fit". I'm looking for the book again for my son's little boy - age 2 1/2 - who has the same symptoms.

I am a mum from the Uk. My 17 yr old son has a diagnosis of ADHD and Asperger's syndrome. without Dr Feingold's diet my son would not have a life. He is not a straight A student, though being very intelligent. This diet helps al kids with challenging behaviours, some become straight A students and others get their lives back - either way this diet is incredible. My son would obviously prefer a meal out sometimes to his gluten free, dairy free, salicylate free diet but he knows that his behaviour will change and therefore all the things he does in life will also be affected. I really truly do not know what I would do without Dr Feingold. In the UK, his diet is not popular, it is not recommended by the experts, so parents know very little about it. If only one parent in the UK read this article and tried it, it is well worth writing it. UK mum

I have followed this cookbooks recommendations since 1983. My son is ADHD and my husband always said if you can't read it don't eat it. It definitely made a differnce in my sons actions and he is now graduating from college and we all still eat much healthier than we would have. The recipes in this cookbook are delicious and I would like to give atleast two of these for Christmas presents and I need one l for myself since whoever borrowed it never returned it to me. They must of liked it too.

My son was diagnosed last year through his elementary school with ADHD and they pushed medication however I was not about to go that route until I had dissolved every other possible alternative. I purchased the Feingold Diet cookbook and surprisingly the recipies are delicious! I was skeptical at first because my son is 6 years old and I was afraid he would put up an argument to eat these foods but to my surprise we all have liked the recipes we have tried. We have only been on the diet for about 4 weeks in which we have seen some changes in behavior (I think the first couple weeks he was rebelling about having to be on a "special diet" plus when he visits his dad everyother weekend, he has gotten food not approved on the diet which sets us back a couple days). Also to our surprise, my husband has experienced positive changes in his energy level and overall general health. You are what you eat!

For parents of children who have been labled ODD, ADHD and other hyperactive and behaivor disorders, this book could change your lives. Dr. Fiendgold has come under critism for his ideas concerning the effect of cemicals in food and their effect on an individuals' nervious systems. When I decided to try Dr. Fiengold's diet I was desperite to help my ODD son and wanted to help him without putting him on drugs. Our whole family tried the diet for six weeks and the results were amazing! Our son is now 20 and a straight A student at the Univerisity of Wisconsin on a music scholarship! He still has to follow Dr. Feingold's guidelines for his diet, but he is a very delightful and productive young man today and has never been on drugs to control his behavior! Thank you DR. Fiengold! We love you!

"The Fitness Factor" should be a bible for women of all ages. "It is never too late to start" is Dr. Callahan's message. She details concrete and gradual steps, free from fads and quick fixes, to follow in order to achieve realistic goals. Dr. Callahan gives hope and encouragement, especially to older women and those who have never made fitness an important part of their life.

I knew it was time to think about adding to my exercise routine when my daughter started playing with my developing triceps wattle. I've hiked and biked regularly for many years, but it clearly wasn't giving me whole-body fitness, and wasn't enough to counteract the effects of moving through middle age. So when I saw this book reviewed and strongly recommended in the New York Times, I thought I'd give it a try.

It definitely was a good choice. The most important things I have gotten from this book are:

(1) Motivation. Callahan stresses that, as with housework (my little addition here), doing *something*, however little, is always better than doing *nothing*. This mindset helps overcome the 'all-or-nothing' perfectionist attitude that if you're going to exercise, you must go all out and learn everything there is to know about it before even starting, which inevitably leads to procrastination and excuses. Callahan gets an A+ in motivating her readers and patients to just get on with it, and to stick to a regular program.

(2) Method. I wanted to know where to start, and what to concentrate on. Callahan focuses on the needs of women in various situations (e.g. more or less athletic to start out with), particularly as we grow older. She recommends specific exercises for flexibility, strength, and endurance training, all of which are important in an effective fitness program. Clear and attractive line drawings are a big aid in picking up the how-to quickly. There is also lots of useful information on equipment, clothing, and shoes.

(3) Benefits of exercise. The author explains clearly why fitness is important not just for weight loss, firmness or improved appearance, though these are welcome benefits as well, but for a healthy heart, dense bones (exercise can help prevent osteoporosis), and to maintain strength for things like being able to get out of a chair when you're older.

(4) Dealing with injury. Several chapters are devoted to how to avoid atheletic injury, and how to deal with it if you do get injured. This includes important warnings like not to keep exercising when you feel pain, and not to leave an ice compress on too long.

(5) Diet. Callahan talks a lot about diet, though there was less that was new here for me, since I already try hard to follow a healthy diet, and am a vegetarian cookbook junkie. But I appreciated her comment on how overdoing vegetarianism can be unhealthy if it limits one's food choices too much.

Callahan cites anecdotally several case histories of her patients, which add interest to the point she's making, and help make the connection with real-life needs and situations of real people.

In her closing chapter, Callahan reminds the reader of how a woman's attitude towards health and exercise can set the tone for better fitness for the whole family, just by example. Kids definitely are more likely to do what you do rather than what you say.

This book was very carefully produced; I found no typos, and only a bit of repetition at the end. It is nicely bound, with a pleasant dust jacket design - the photo of the author reveals her to be in excellent shape and very attractive herself. Best of all, the font style and size is large and comfortable to read, the paper snow-white and glare-free, and the margins generous.

In short, I highly recommend this to any woman who wants quick, to-the-point, quality information that won't overwhelm you on how to become more fit. And make sure you pass this one onto your daughters when you're done.

The Fitness Factor's appeal is in its use as a tool for the development of a personal health and wellness plan. It is based on sound eating and exercise principals and provides insight and ideas for its readers.

Great information for women from a woman
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-25
This is an excellent book for educating women about the benefits of fitness. Author Callahan makes a compelling case for why exercise should be a priority in every woman's life, regardless of the many obstacles which might get in the way. She does a particularly skillful job in explaining exactly how cardiovascular exercise provides health benefits for the heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, and other functions. She then lays out specific steps for developing your own cardio plan, from determining the type/frequency of exercise to choosing the right fitness shoes; subsequent chapters provide the same breakdowns in terms of flexibility and weight training options.

This book is not designed for beginning exercisers alone, however. In Part 3, Callahan begins to concentrate on the issue of taking fitness to the next level, including battling boredom, progressing with weight training, and conquering various fitness challenges. She also includes a section on nutrition, emphasizing the importance of eating in weight loss and shifting to a focus on eating as a means to fuel the body. She also touches on the issue of eating disorders/disordered eating, sadly a real concern amongst health-conscious women. The final part of the book addresses sports injuries, providing very helpful information for recognizing, preventing, and treating common injuries.

Although I think that women from all levels of fitness are likely to derive some benefit from this book, it is probably most relevant to those who are fairly new to fitness and/or who have not yet educated themselves in this area. As a regular exerciser for years, I was already familiar with much of the information presented, although I did find the section on injuries to be particularly helpful. Overall, this is a very useful reference manual which I would not hesitate to recommend to other women.

This book is a big help in starting a walking program with (almost) all the information you need. The author has color coded the workouts to fitness level and difficulty. I could use a little more information about self-evaluation but otherwise a very nicely written book for the purpose. Beginners to early intermediates will find the book quite helpful (experts probably won't need it.)

Excellent Resource for Walkers

Review Date: 2006-08-13
This book is a great place to obtain walking workout knowledge for the beginning walker, or the advanced/experienced athlete who would like to add walking to their routine. It dispells many of the myths surrounding the jogging-vs-walking debate (i.e. which is better for you) and provides ample research showing the amazing benefits of walking.

Chapters include information on preparing to walk, purchasing shoes, walking the correct way, warming up/cooling down, stretches (with photos), and various self-tests to determine where your starting level is.

6 chapters are divided into different stages of walking workouts (from beginners to highly advanced) and each chapter contains 10 different workouts for that walking stage.

There is not a lot of difference between the 1995 and 2005 editions of this book - the photos are updated and the scientific references and other resources mentioned are updated. But if you don't mind an older copy, most of the information provided in the 1st edition is the same.

Highly recommended for everyone - even when I did not use the suggested workouts in this text, I learned a lot about how to improve my own walks (with my dog!) and get more benefit from them. I also found great responses to give people who say, "Why don't you go jogging instead" -- there are many reasons walking is the most body-beneficial workout out there and this book will explain them.

Nice, Mellow Self-Help for Athletes

Review Date: 2007-02-14
"Fitness Walking" by Therese Iknoian is very helpful self-guided instructional to help folks get started in those activities know jointly/separately as Fitness Walking, Health Waling, Power Walking etc. This reviewer had no choice getting involved, since his knees were burned out after 30+ years of running on concrete. The tone of FW is genial and gentle throughout. Perhaps the most useful advice is printed very early in the text where the author lists her "Technique Summary". These 7 points encompass all the basics the new athletic walker will need to get started. There are more helpful admonitions, given lightly in a big sisterly fashion: > Walk using only one earphone for safety> Warm up, stretch AND cool down after each workout > Avoid injury and muscle stress by cross training via other athletic activities including bicycling and swimming >Use the hard/day easy method to give tired muscles recovery time. Most of the foregoing was not new but this reviewer had long since forgotten or dispensed with these tactics -for no good reason. FW is definitely not limited to the basics, there are charts and programs for the more ambitious to follow. Even formal racewalkers will find material they can use. This reviewer spent $50.00 on a racewalking class sponsored by a well known road runners club here in NYC, complete with overbearing instructor. The mere $12.00+is a vastly better investment. Though FW is recommended without reservation, it should not be read once and put aside. As with any self help text, athletes should keep it handy, referring back to it for reinforcement of the basics.

Great for Treadmill Walking Too
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-19
Although the author promotes outdoor walking more than inside treadmill workouts, I find that the book is perfect for use with the treadmill. There are beginning programs all the way up to athletic ones, and you can start with the one that suits you and include any others that you want by customizing your own workouts. Actually, my treadmill calculates the miles, distance, pace, etc., making it really easy to follow the programs. The book is very thorough and covers a lot of useful information regarding walking as a regular routine. This is a must-have for anyone considering walking - rather it be for health or fitness.

Just got this one and I'm finding it really useful. It's not the most comprehensive book on the subject, but what it does have is really well done. Only briefly mention of the Bach flower essences, focusing instead on less well known flowers, mainly from Australia.

I love this book, the "energy" of it is wonderful, in the sense the intention of the book as it was written and the wonderful colour pictures, case histories, wide variety of essences, indexes and information is brilliant. I adore it. Can't wait to get my hands on her larger book The Complete Illustrated Encyclopedia of Flower Remedies, sadly out of print even though it was published in 2000.

An excellent guide for the visually-minded

This book is an excellent introduction to flower essences, or flower remedies. It's strongest point is the visual way it is laid out, with a case study, photos of the flower, historical snippets, and general information on each remedy. It's very well-organized and a real pleasure to read, especially if you want to shy away from dense, overly-technical reading on the subject. This is immensely readable, yet still accurate and true to the subject. The one confusing point is the selection of remedies seems random or arbitrary. There are remedies from many different sources, or makers of remedies, with out a complete selection from any company. This is interesting, but in no way complete. Some remedies are included, others excluded, for no apparent reason. Still, I enjoy this book and it's nice just to leave out for browsing in the waiting room of an office, or coffee table in your living room.

This is an outstanding introduction to flower essence therapy giving the reader a clear and concise picture of each essence plant. The simplicity of the format and the accesibility of the text belies the huge amount of information packed into such a compact book. I could not recomend this book more highly as an introduction to a fascinating therapy.

I find this book to be thoroughly useful because for each flower, it lists the ways it can be used: as an herb, a homeopathic remedy, and as a flower essence. The photography is astonishing! Being able to see how the flower really looks, is very helpful when I'm working with clients. The photos and illustrations really convey the true nature of the flower. This is a blessing of a book!

This is an amazing book. It talks about herbal uses, the history and how to identify many different flowers. There are beautiful photographs or drawings of each flower. I would definitely recommend this book to any flower lover, and also to people that want to learn more about using common flowers for herbal healing.

This book is very comprehensive, covering herbal remedies, essential oils, flower essences and homeopathy. The pictures of the flowers are beautiful and interesting to meditate on as one works with a remedy. It's very well written, appealing to both novices and experienced healers. I've learned so much from this book, and I continually turn to it for guidance and information.

As usual, Annemarie Colbin's voice of reason brings hope to a field of health awareness where hype and misinformation dominate. This book is fascinating and, like her other books, forces one to THINK about the things we put into our bodies every day. The approach she proposes is unconventional to most Americans but please don't dismiss it. Remember, osteoporosis is thriving in the countries (like ours) where dairy products are freely consumed by the majority. Give this book a read and you won't be sorry!

This is well documented and extremely well written, very fluid. I'm a veg so I would have wanted a meatless book, so I have to skip over the blood & bones parts to get to info I can use. I see a lot of meaters with the endless broken hips and bones so I can easily do without the traditional way down that rat hole. I have a few other books of hers which are more oriented in my direction and am hoping her next book on bone health coming in Feb is more on my wavelength.

I feel very fortunate to have found this very enlightening book about the very serious ailment facing, mostly, the women of our society: OSTEOPOROSIS. Relying on her own family's years of natural bone health, she gives the reader many facts and field results on the "Nutritional Aspect" of treating, and improving our bones throughout our lifetime. Her 60+ recipes are original and sometimes very unique, giving a very encourageing start to, hopefully, a new awareness and lifestyle. I have greatly enjoyed reading, learning, and following her many examples and suggestions, and fixing her recipes...I know I feel better already. Please read this book, you owe it to yourself, and the ones you love!

Finally something I can believe and follow

I am thrilled to discover this book by Annemarie Colbin about such an important issue for me and many other women of my generation. I have a heart problem so when my Kaiser physician told me I should take Fosamax for my osteoporosis I decided there must be another way. When you take Fosamax, it sends calcium to your bones. But, your heart needs calcium too. So, how do you know if you are doing more damage to your heart and other tissues if you take this drug? What's more important - my heart or my skeleton.

With the information from this book, I have a way to improve both my skeleton and be good to my heart. I like the way she writes - with good data, lots of resources and references, but in a way someone not very technical, like me, can understand why things work the way they do. And the recipes look great. I haven't tried any of them yet, but plan to, once I get my own book (I found this in the library). To me one of the most important points she makes is that calcium isn't the entire answer - it's all nutrients and the amounts of them that are so critical. And, every body is a little different in the way it needs to receive these nutrients. If your ancestors didn't traditionally eat milk products, milk probably isn't the best way for you to get the needed nutrients for your body.

I learned that maybe my joint and back pains might be from eating too many tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and peppers - these are nightshade vegetables and have 'alkaloids' which mess us the calcium metabolism. If cultures included a lot of these foods in their diets, they typically also included a lot of dairy products because "dairy and nightshades are opposite and complementary; if you eat one, you need the other".

I also learned that chocolate and "caffeine consumption increases the excretion of calcium (away from the bone) as well as magnesium through the urine, which indicates bone loss. Young women seem to be able to compensate for this loss and make it up faster through increased and more efficient calcium absorption from the intestines. Older women, on the other hand with age- and hormone-related calcium imbalances, do not seem to be able to compensate as efficiently, and are at higher risk for thinning bones, especially if their calcium intake is low." P34 - 35

She goes on to talk about studies of how much is too much, and if de-caf is an alternative (it isn't). This information is fascinating.

I plan to give a copy of this book all my friends and family.

Annemarie Colbin has writen a wonderful, concise and palatable manual for understanding the relationship between lifestyle and bone health. She systematically details the causes of bone deterioration and establishes a course of action to counteract its progression. I would recommend this book to anyone, practitioner or patient, who either has a family history of osteoporosis or will be older tomorrow than they are today. I guess that includes us all. Great job Annemarie!

At last - a way of eating that works

I love this book. It is a v. common sense approach and fits in with normal day to day living. Over the last three years I've been slowly cutting sugar, refined carbs and saturated fats out of my diet and going back to basic wholefoods. BUT, it's sometimes very hard not to reach for that slice of bread or a biscuit. And it's sometimes very hard to find inspiration from basic foods like eggs, yogurt, salads, meat and vegetables, potatoes and rice. This diet is what I've been trying to do, but just couldn't quite get the inspiration or the know-how. It takes all those basic ingredients and adds a lot more interesting ones and puts them all together so that the diet is no longer boring.

I've tried Atkins, and also mostly raw food diets. But they get a bit tedious after a while because they're not varied enough. This diet is based on common sense and eating sensibly. I started with the 7 day diet and really enjoyed the recipes (all very easy to make). My clothes were loose by the end of the week and it wasn't even hard to do! Now I follow the recommendations of how to eat healthy, and it's great. I always have something good in the fridge to snack on. The diet part is also a bit like a 7-day simple cooking course in that it shows you how to use herbs and spices to liven up your meals. The recipes at the back are very easy, but v. good and interesting. It has really expanded my repertoire of things that I now reach for every day. I've just bought the book for my sister, as she has some food intolerances, so she's going to give it a try too.

This book well deserves the Bestseller slot it holds in the UK but despite it's claims to be suitable for vegetarians I'd advise looking over Mr Marber's shoulder.

They say behind every great man there's a great woman.....check out Yvonne Bishop-Weston BSc Dip ION MBANT at The Food Doctor.

If you have leanings towards vegetarianism then try her recipe book by Hamlyn (Vegan) ISBN 0600609154 - fantastic healthy recipes. It's based on the same kind of higher protein, lower or rather better carb, lower GI / GL (glycaemic load) type principles that have made Ian Marber so famous recently whilst battling out on British TV with other nutri-celebs.

It's also on special offer at Amazon! Enjoy

...then it would be this man. This is a highly sensible and helpful text that aims to address a lot of the dietry and digestive problems that have become a common part of modern day life. Don't assume it is about loosing weight, the word "diet", seems to have come to mean that and yet it so much more of an embracing word. This is just a good book about the most sensible kind of medicine, food and good food at that.
It should be in every home and in every Doctor's consulting room right next to their prescription book!

This is an excellent work on the classic problems faced by people of all ages-at some stage of life. Namely; the collective
impact of parasites, yeasts and sugar can be very damaging to
the gastrointestinal tract and the inflammatory processes in
the body. The author provides a menu of fruits, veggies and
herbs to help deflect many of the most painful problems
of the gastrointestinal tract. The book is well worth the price
of admission. It should be in every health library.
