The Don't Go Hungry DietReview Date: 2008-10-01
Stop beating yourself up and listen to your bodyReview Date: 2008-10-01
This book was the relief I needed. Dr. Amanda's principles made sense and were backed by science. The thing that struck me the most was her explanation of how we can be so good on a diet and then suddenly binge like we had never eaten food before. I have struggled with eating disorders since I was in grade school (I'm almost 40 now) and have overcome most of my harmful behavior, but could not figure out why those binges would still grab hold of me. Once I started applying Dr. Amanda's principles, the binges stopped and so did my beating myself up. I realized that depriving my body for so long only leads to a craving. That it isn't something uncontrollable. I have control by listening to my body, eating healthy foods most of the time and allowing myself treats without guilt. I still have my days where I overeat past fullness, but if I truly listen to my body the fat brake kicks in and I typically eat less the next day, I still track my calories because it helps me, but I'm no longer obsessive. I have lost 2 lbs towards my 10 lb goal and know it will take time, but I am OK with it because I"ve learned a way I can live with.

The Only "Diet" Book I'd Ever Recommend Review Date: 2008-09-01
This is the first "diet" book which truly gives you the information (power) back to make your own decisions. This book helps reconnect you to your body and its signals of hunger and satiety. We live so far from what our bodies are telling us, that its no wonder we're having such difficulty with weight issues. We crave nutrients, not volume.
Don't ever read another diet article about will power or motivation. You won't need it. Don't ever read another about counting calories. Just read this book and take back the ability to listen to your own body. I've already shared my copy with friends. Work with your body, stop beating yourself up, and be patient. This is the guide to a lifestyle you have been looking for.
The Holy Grail is here if you are looking for itReview Date: 2008-09-01
If you are struggling with your weight you must buy this book immediately.
Grab a highlighter and read it until you understand the content well enough to teach it. Once you learn how to tune into your body's signals you will be on the road to success. Readers will also discover that if you arrive at your goal weight by sheer willpower you will have inadvertently turned your body into a super efficient fat storing machine. You may win the battle but will lose the war big time. In other words you will ultimately get fatter and fatter. Not surprisingly, as determined as you may be to stick to your "diet" when you go up against millions of years of evolutionary development you will ultimately fail.
The book will show you how to prevail by working with your body rather than against it. No fuzzy new age theories here. The author is not a celebrity trainer to the stars, she is a is a molecular scientist with a PhD from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, who has spent her professional life in this area of research. This stuff is all backed by hard science and based on how our bodies actually work.
A word of warning. The primary concepts taught in this book are very simple but can be easily misunderstood by anybody simply skimming through the book. Yes, you will never go hungry on this diet but first you must get back in tune with your own physical signals. Some chronic dieters have lost touch with their natural signals and re-acquainting yourself with them is a key component of Dr Amanda's approach.Detailed steps are provided.
The book is clearly written, thoroughly researched and referenced. If you want to lose weight all you have to do is read it thoroughly and apply the method diligently.

A must have to help prevent cancerReview Date: 2000-04-19
Not only do Drs. Gaynor and Hickey explain what foods are good for you and why -- they also break down how you can get each of the nutrients and antioxidants in supplement form on pages that immediately follow entitled "Pharmacist Corner."
After being diagnosed with malignant melanoma I immediately started to hunt around for resource books on how to lessen my chances of reoccurances and so far this is the best. It is an uplifting resource book filled with information on the subject as well as success stories that will be an inspiration to all who read it.
Well worth reading.Review Date: 1999-01-10
Book starts where others left off----Review Date: 1999-01-14
Perhaps that is the value of the recent release of a book whose packaging and theme so closely resemble Dr. Oliver Alabaster's "What You Can Do To Prevent Cancer," 1985; Simon and Schuster. Both authors are physicians and leading research oncologists. Dr. Gaynor at the Strang Cancer Prevention Center and Dr. Alabaster at The George Washington University.
The book is well written, easy to read and at times gives the reader more than an adequate dose of optimism in what the media often portray as a never-ending battle against this country's most feared killer. Specifically, the book seems to give the impression that one can easily "detoxify" the body by choosing a variety of enzymes and other chemicals to aid the liver in its work. Would that the job be so easy! It is an interesting idea, and one loosely based on some body of medical research, but as a concept it might be a bit more optimistic than practical.
The research that the "detoxification" approach is based on is generally valid and promising. In a sidebar in one chapter Dr. Gaynor lists supplements which are certainly of value and would at worst do no physical harm. These include the antioxidant glutathione, whey protein (which contains glutathione, but is seemingly only documented in one Canadian study), broccoli, green tea and selenium.
Dr. Gaynor brings to the reader a wealth of current information almost unavailable in the popular press and which is both useful and necessary.
He succinctly explains what cancer is, how such cells develop, and some of what can be done to prevent cancer in most individuals who are not already strongly predisposed by genetic factors. He correctly states that some 70% of all cancers can be avoided or by prevention but almost glosses over our largest and most constant exposure to the environment -- the very food we eat and the dietary choices we make on a day-to-day basis.
While his emphasis on phytonutrients and supplements is exciting, far too little attention is given to natural sources of these promising chemicals. Less attention is given to the preventive role of dietary fat reduction or restriction. Instead the author develops and promotes a program which relies mostly on supplements and/or foods which for many might seem initially odd and could too easily be avoided.
This is both the strength and the weakness of the book. So strong is the case to use these supplements that the casual and overly-optimistic reader might want to delve into a world of supplements immediately but might soon be disappointed by a lack of understanding, motivation or even in some cases taste. For example, he recommends a number of combinations in the juicer which some who are overly accustomed to high fructose corn syrup might not enjoy. On the other hand his recipe for a combination of apples, carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli was tasteful and left no hint of the "cruciferic" taste that some people try to avoid. This recipe alone might make the book a good investment in future health dividends.
Dr. Gaynor's research is current, sound and well presented. The use of a nutritional pharmacist Gerry Hickey, R.Ph., gives the book its strong emphasis on phytochemicals and other food-based cancer prevention chemicals. The book includes an appendix that is a good source of supplements and other cancer prevention products mentioned which will be of particular benefit to those who live in areas where such products are not easily available. Another appendix lists references of solid peer-reviewed journals for much of the book's information. Of particular curiosity in this regard is a chapter promoting Japanese mushrooms. A highly regarded National Academy of Science Publication, "Diet and Cancer" showed that mushrooms when uncooked contain one of the most potent cancer promoting chemicals known to man. Dr. Gaynor not only leaves this fact out but fails to mention whether or not these types of mushrooms need to be cooked in order to "detoxify" them.
This book is an excellent buy, full of current and useful information. It picks up where Dr. Alabaster's book left off and indeed given that book's emphasis on diet both books should be used in together. A good read, a better source of health information. Highly recommended.

A dream come true: The most sensible approach ever!Review Date: 2003-02-23
Why? Rather than offering a once-size-fits-all formula for quick weight loss, it helps first pinpoint the possible causes of our diverse, individual struggles and then offers sensible, logical and healthy lifestyle changes I wish I'd "thought of" before: No longer do I feel like I'm on a diet, but by following Dr. Kushner & team's expert guidelines, I've adopted changes that are not only manageable in everyday domestic, social and business situations, but ones that can easily last a lifetime.
Ever since I found my "personality type" after completing the quiz, made lots of the recommended changes, met with great success (and compliments from others!) I've been thinking "Why don't people ever talk about this 'novel approach' even though, as I now see, it makes the most obvious sense in the world?"
Moreover, Dr. Kushner not only seems to understand every single one of us, but he also recognizes the human reality of our situation--that deprivation and strict dietary dictates aren't what are going to give us the long-lasting results we've all been seeking, and instead offers us valid, sensible advice and tools we all can use to fit our varied lifestyles and thereby get control of our weight once and for all. In addition to all of this, I loved the tone of the book because it seems like he's actually talking to you, doing so with warmth and a sense of humor. So apart from being enormously helpful, it's also enjoyable to read.
I feel like buying this book as a gift for every single person I know who struggles with their weight. I also feel like nominating Dr. Kushner for the "Hall of Fame of Medical Professionals who Really Understand and Care about You & Me."

Book DOES NOT Advocate Drinking Beer Will Make You ThinReview Date: 2004-10-20
To the reviewer who posted this...the book is about moderation. There is not one bit of advice in the book that advocates that drinking beer will make you thin. How do I know? I'm the author. By listing the carbohydrate counts of over 350 beers---something that Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power, etc. does not do, and pointing out how the MODERATE consumption of beer can be worked into a low-carb diet, the book adds another piece of information to the low-carb scene.
BTW, Atkins, Protein Power, and now---even South Beach, say the moderate consumption of beer is okay. They just don't give you the carb counts for beer. Duh! This book does.
Works For Me!Review Date: 2003-09-18
The list of beers with their carbohydrate counts in this book opens up a whole new side of controlled carbohydrate eating. The key is moderation. You make the decision how much beer you can incorporate into your daily carb intake. With the beer/carb numbers listed in the book, you now have full control to enjoy regular brewed beers while dieting.
BTW, I've dropped 25 pounds and still enjoy a beer or two a couple of times a week.
You Can Drink Beer & Still Lose WeightReview Date: 2003-06-24
Don't bother looking for the carb counts of regular beers on cans or bottles. The author points out that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms doesn't allow it though a nutritional analysis is mandatory on all "light" beers. Skilnik claims it took 2 years of telephone calls, e-mailing and faxing to put this book together, probably helped by the fact that he's a certified brewer with a degree in Brewing Technology from the Siebel Institute of Technology, the oldest school for brewers in the U.S.
There's lot of micro and regional beers here and imports too plus the typical American stuff. You can also go to the book's website for updates and additions to the carbohydrate counts of even more beers as they become available.

A very refreshing look at eater personalities!!Review Date: 1998-05-13
I do hope to be able to use the simple to follow plan she has formulated for my "food personality." Many people have been successful by following Carrie Latt Wiatt's advice and I am inspired to believe I will be successful too!!
I love this book and believe it will help relieve other people who get stressed out by their personal battles with food, weight, body image and the diets that don't work.
This is not a diet book. It is a book that deals with the heart of why we eat the way we do and re-directs our focus on HOW to eat for nourishment and rejuvenation, as well as, complete health and well-being. END

She advocates whole, healthy food that is readily available and has simple tips like, eat plenty of fruit and veggies, eat a wide variety of foods and reaquaint yourself with what your body wants; she also says don't panic if you slip and don't punish yourself. When I moved to the US I carried my copy of The Don't Go Hungry Diet in my luggage so that I had it as soon as I arrived. Her recipes are also great.
Thanks Dr. Amanda.
