so many books out there focus on the person with alzheimers and very few address the caregiver adequately. My ailing mother is caring for my father and her inability to do a good job was fodder for all sorts of of emotional issues - she needed more than a small chapter in the back of a book. This book was wonderful and validated all her feelings and let her know she was not alone. Too bad it's so difficult to find. It has a question and answer format with questions like "I feel so bad when I yell at him for not remembering. I know he's sick but I just get so frustrated! What can I do?". Practical, useful, and true to life.

This is a remarkable and extremely useful book for all caregivers and family members of Alzheimer's and Dementia patients. It utilizes principles of "RET" or Rational Emotive Therapy pioneered by Dr. Albert Ellis. Simply put, the concept holds that one's perception of events will determine the corresponding feeling or emotion. A deceptively simple but powerful concept in battling depression, anger, and frustration. In the case of Alzheimer's caregivers, this premise can be a literal lifesaver and Drs. Oliver and Bock use their own case histories of treating caregivers to demonstrate pratical, powerful "inner dialogues" that can be used when the daily stress and frustrations of dealing with this challenging condition come to bear. Specific chapters are devoted to: Shame,Guilt, Anger, Depression, and even Self-Pity. This book not only provides the means to lift the spirits and emotions of caregivers, but by doing so, potentially change for the better the necessary interactions between them and their stricken loved-one. Highly recommended!

Growing up we always got to have pizza for our birthdays. After reading this book I realized that I thought of eating pizza as being a celebration where I could eat as much as I wanted with no limit. There are so many foods that I thought of as being rewards I am shocked at my way of thinking. Food has always been something to turn to when I was upset or mad. Now I realize that I should have taken a walk to help me get over what was bothering me. When I think of all the special family get-to-gethers at my Grandma's I think of the good food there and want food to help me feel the way I did back then My common sense was hibernating before I read this book. It's a great book.

I have read sooo many books about eating right and exercising and it all comes down to will I do it or not?

This book is great because it explains why I am having cravings and how to do the inner work to put an end to the cravings. Many books tell you what to eat and then you are on your own. This one helps you to change where the craving comes from so that it is not just a battle of wills. I appreciate the cleansing section and the section on how to put food into categories to stay balanced. Something about how that is explained just makes things so clear. My advice is stop buying dieting books and go for the "Cure".

I have found the information offered here very helpful, and I haven't even used all of it. For me, the best info in this book has to do with looking at how you use food. The Craving Cure helped me see the power I was giving food that it really doesn't have - and I am steadily eliminating the mindless eating that resulted in extra pounds. The extra pounds are coming off, not because I am slavishly adhering to a diet, but because I am reorienting how I nourish myself. The author teaches that there are many other ways to do this besides eating! I am eating when I am hungry, and I am eating better. This is a great book whether you have a little or a lot to lose. Thanks for a wonderful, helpful book!

I love The Craving Cure! It really hits the nail on the head.

It really is amazing how The Craving Cure is just that....it cured my cravings for the sugar and empty starches that I thought I could never live without. I'm never really hungry like I used to be. Honestly I would be starving 30 minutes after I would eat my oatmeal every morning. Not anymore!

I have lost 10 pounds. I am so excited! I feel great. I have tried so many times to lose these 10 to 15 pounds and have never come so close.

Your book and program is incredibly inspiring and has changed my life.

It's funny because the whole concept of looking deep inside yourself vs. the outer layer of "chatter" (I believe was how it was referred to) is such a simple solution that I was somewhat aware of but your explanation brought the picture in crystal clear. Somehow it just all made sense - very simply.

I have experienced not only positive physical changes but my whole outlook on life has changed. I feel that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. I can't remember when I've ever felt this good! Thank you again. Because of your book my life has changed in so many wonderful ways!

Like most people, I've been on the merry go round with dieting for all my life. And - you guessed it - some things have worked but not for long.

In retrospect, there is a very good reason why this has happened.
This book is absolutely life changing. It puts the whole picture together and has you draw on your "wise self" to make decisions about food, exercise and your sense of well being. What's more important, is Rena teaches you step by step how to do this in a systematic way.

Working with her material has been a phenomenal experience for me.
In terms of effects, things have changed very steadily. The first thing I noticed was that I could sleep through the night. Then, the aches and pains started diminishing. Then, my energy came back and before you know it, I'm looking forward to walking my dog every night (and I used to hate being outside) doing Power Yoga and meditating.

They are no longer a struggle for me but instead have become an integral part of my daily life. Not to mention, I've been losing weight slowly and steadily. I highly recommend this book.

I have all the rest of her materials as well including her other book and CD set. Having all these tools at my disposal is amazing - I feel so supported and I don't even know her!

Thank you Rena. You've changed my life. . . . for the better!!

She gives useful and simple solutions to common problems women encounter regarding nutrition and exercise. She allows us to have our coffee and drink it too, you can even have a cocktail at that evening out with friends. She just tells us how to do it and still be smart about our nutrition. I applaud this little nutritional gem of a book - it is filled with accessible, interesting and wise guidelines, in a concise format. The authors words are encouraging and knowledgeable, without the additional baggage of so many "diet" books out there that espouse esoteric theories and their own personal "only" way to lose weight. This common sense, easily applied, nugget of a book would be so helpful to you. I am excited to have it by my side as I attempt to lose weight in a healthy and sane manner. This book was recommended to me by a nurse. I was having terrible side effects to cholesterol medication, and my doctor kept urging me to stay on it, despite the side effects. This book informed me that these side effects were nothing to mess with, and could cause serious harm to my liver and kidneys. I just hope I didn't find out too late. I use people to use this, when a doctor gives you a new drug, or one that doesn't agree with you. I really believe if I hadn't stopped the zocor when I did, I'd be dead.

A Balanced Examination of Drug Use
Helpful Votes: 50 out of 50 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-13
This is an important book for anyone who takes prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs or herbals. The first part examines the relationship between drug companies and the FDA, which has changed significantly since the early 1990's. Much of the funding for new drug review now comes from the drug manufacturers. The approval process is faster and testing time shorter. The author details how the public increasingly plays a role in "testing" in the form of "post-marketing surveillance" and that the adverse drug reactions encountered are under reported. Marketing includes massive distribution of "free sample" to physicians, many of whom may not be familiar with precautions -- and hence do not alert patients to warning signs and symptoms. Also, advertising of prescription medications has increased greatly in the last few years, which has greatly increased drug use and pressure on physicians to prescribe medications.
Other sections of the books discuss similar concerns with nonprescription medications (many of which recently required prescriptions) and with herbal medications.
The book is "spiced" with case histories that are real page turners. The author has done a real service to the public by describing the scope of the adverse drug reaction problem (#3 killer), and by describing several of the reasons why this has become such an overwhelming concern.
This review is written from the perspective of someone who has been in nursing for over 20 years and who has seen lots of people on lots of medications. The author, a physician, is not suggesting that people stop taking medications that may be important to their health. But he provides guidelines and tools to help individuals evaluate what they need, including the use of a pharmacist and internet resources.

When you go to your Doctor, one of three things are for sure. To treat your illness you will either be drugged, or cut, or hospitalized. Never mind Doctors are the 3rd leading cause of death in America (As reported by JAMA) we put a lot of trust in these people.

Most drugs are hostile to the body, and have very negative side effects, and have little more than a placebo effect on what ever your illness happens to be. Akind to going to a doctor with a broken leg, and all he gives you for a treatment is a pair of crutches. This instead of getting to the cause of your hypertension, or diabetes, or heart disease. They throw a bunch of pills at you.

The FDA has the manufacturer's best interests in hand, that is keeping the billions of dollars the snake oil garners each year flowing, regardless of whether it kills you or not. The costs have been weighed, and the patient loses.

This book "Tells It Like It Is", and everyone who takes prescription pills on a regular basis needs to read this book for your own well being.

Pharmaceutical companies hijacked medical knowledge
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-27
Billions of pills are swallowed every year in the U.S., and billions more are consumed worldwide. Yet, pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, and physicians downplay the risk. Many consumers, oblivious to the real danger, risk their lives each and every day by taking 2, 3, 4, or more drugs with potentially deadly consequences.

If you're taking prescription drugs - you need to read this book. If you want a primer on the inner workings of the pharmaceutical marketing machine - this book is for you.

The author's compare and contrast the role of the FDA before the 1990's and the 1990's & beyond. Before the 90's the FDA / Pharmaceutical industry relationship was adversarial, with drug safety dictating long, tedious clinical testing. In 1992, the world changed with the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA). Then in 1997, the Food & Drug Modernization Act (FDAMA) really blasted open the doors for the pharmaceutical industry. FDAMA allowed actively promoting off-label drug use and fast-tracking of trials.

Death by Prescription also breaks down the inner workings of the pharmaceutical marketing machine, whereby medical knowledge was hijacked by the pharmaceutical (and medical device) manufacturers. Statistics are skewed by blinding people through relative risk as opposed to the real picture shown by absolute risk.

Death by Prescription is an absolute page turner, peppered with case histories and heart-retching stories that blow apart the industry's efforts to conceal the real dangers posed by drugs.

Opportunity is in the air. Pharmaceuticals are facing huge uphill battles as they confront dwindling drug pipelines, devastating lawsuits, and are struggling to cope with the dawn of genetic medicine which will destroy mass-markets.

This is a good book to read for following your first detox. But I did find that my body needed some protein on the second day. So I added beans to the evening meal of miso the second night and it worked like a charm. This book contains some New Age mumbo-jumbo, but if you follow the dietary plans, you will see some amazing benefits. As the book recommends, I highly recommend you stick with a strict vegi diet the week before your detox to get the most benefits. I started on a Tuesday. By the following Tuesday I had lost 9 pounds and felt so great I hated going off the detox plan. Once you try a couple of different plans in this book, you figure out what works best for you. I invested in a Green Power juicer ..., the kind that juices wheatgrass, and I'm using it like crazy. You can also pick up a book of juicing recipes that will help you find ways to make the juices more delicious. Enjoy!

This would be a very helpful book for anyone who wants to improve her or his nutrition, regardless of whether they have cancer or not. The author starts out by teaching the reader how to have a well balanced diet - information everyone needs to know. One of the things I like best about the book is that she acknowledges that research on nutrition and cancer is incomplete, but then goes on to discuss how to include foods that have been shown to be possibly helpful in preventing cancer. The book is packed with useful information and helpful hints to make the dietary changes easier and more enjoyable. Reviewed by Patricia J. This book is wonderful. If you have received that dreaded diagnosis, your doctor is not going to give you as much advice as Diana Dyer does. This book tells you how to improve your diet to maximize your chance of surviving. If you are still healthy, try to stay that way by following her guidelines. I was struck by how far ahead of her time Diana Dyer was. She was making changes (some controversial) way before the research showed she was doing the right thing.

It stood out from others on the shelves as it was to the point, covering all the ground I wanted something like this to do, and it was in a bigger font than the other encyclopedias there! While following their eating and exercise guidelines to some degree, I believe their vitamin and mineral recommendations have attributed to my now having a passing grade cholesterol levels across the board. On that basis 5 stars...and I must try more of their recipes!

Excellent discussion of alternatives to drugs.

This is an excellent guide to the many things you can do to reduce your cholesterol and triglycerides. It is a bit thin, a bit too cute and a bit commercial (i.e. order our newsletter, buy our vitamins etc.), but if you can overlook these distractions you're left with a helpful pamphlet.

If your cholesterol problem is not 100% permanent because of genetics, you can probably benefit by trying this plan, or at least portions of it. One of the few books by a traditional physician who recognizes the contribution s which can be made by supplements, exeercise, and tempting recipes.

Clever food substitutions really worked

I was initially dubious about modifying my diet (which is one of the "Blitz" tactics the authors describe), but I tried their clever food substitution scheme and-believe it or not- my cholesterol plummeted. And my taste buds are very picky. Suggest give it a whirl.

I tried to get pregnant for 2 years, without success. I purchased Hendler's book and made a list of what vitamins and minerals my husband and I could take to help with fertility. After 2 months on the vitamins, I was pregnant! I have also used other formulas of Hindler's, and they really work! It's also nice that he gives daily recommendations for what you want to accomplish.

This book was an excellent resource for me to decipher between the hype and the scientific data on nutritional supplements. This information held a lot of credibility for me because Sheldon Saul Hendler is an M.D. and a Ph.D. I used the information in his book and mapped out a nutritional supplemental program. It worked!! I felt more energetic and healthy. I researched this book on Amazon.Com hoping that Dr. Hendler had updated the information because so much has changed since the book was written in 1991. So, Dr. Hendler, if you happen to read this, I hope you are updating your book as I would love to read about the latest research on nutritional supplements.

Very objective, both pro and con

This is a book that is written from the doctors view point, in other words you don't hear words about how a vitamin, mineral, herb is the next saviour of mankind. But when there is data supporting statements about improving memory or increasing energy or slowing the aging process etc, he will state it, and explore it. All in all, very informative, the only problem with this book is that it is 8 years old ( this was written at 07/98 ), although that does not detract from the data in the book a lot of things happen in this field in 8 years.

Well organized, excellent resource

As we are all ultimately responsible for our own physical well-being, objective data is imperative in making informed health care decisions. Dr. Hendler's book delivers just that. I share the sentiments of the other reviewers;I signed on to Amazon hoping to find an updated version of this excellant resource. During this "herbal explosion", I have found the availability of objective and medical data on dietary supplements to be severely deficient. So, Dr. Hendler, if you're out there, we need you!

This is another must have book. First the author has nothing to 'do' with fitness or bodybuilding so you get the straight scoop. The book is easy to understand and goes into great detail. Vitamins and Minerals are covered PLUS most supplements. Want real information, get this book. NBAF 'very best'. (Hope for a update!)
