"Coping with Chemotherapy and Its Effects," and "Lymphedema and Infection" tie for the second-most-depressing chapters. You may find "Facing Death" even more dismal. (...)
Even though this book is biased toward the stories and treatments of younger women, I think those of us who are post-menopausal will still benefit from reading it. I just skipped the sections on becoming pregnant during or after treatment, and grief counseling for children.
One other caution: my oncologist says that the chapter on bone marrow transplants is already out-of-date, even though this book was published in 1993. Use "The Breast Cancer Companion" as you would use advice and sympathy from a friend who has survived her disease for ten years. (...)

Highly detailed, emotionally wrenchingReview Date: 2001-12-02
"Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. It continues to be a major health care problem in the US and worldwide. The lifetime risk of a US woman developing breast cancer is 1 in 8 and the risk increases with advancing age--1 in 54 by age 50 and 1 in 23 by age 60 (National Cancer Institute, 2000). Over 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are age 50 or older."
Okay so I'm part of the 75% over 50 years old, but one of the really scary things about this book is the youth of the women who were diagnosed for the first time. The author was 37. My sister was 36. Many of the women whose stories are told in "The Breast Cancer Companion" were in their twenties or early thirties when they first discovered a suspicious lump. Some of the worst stories in the book (for me) concerned women who discovered their cancer during pregnancy.
"Coping with Chemotherapy and Its Effects," and "Lymphedema and Infection" tie for the second-most-depressing chapters. You may find "Facing Death" even more dismal. Not me. Not now, at least.
Go to the Internet for more up-to-date information on risk factors, treatment options, and outcomes. Some sites I found especially useful were sponsored by The American Cancer Society, Imaginis, The National Cancer Institute, and BreastDoctor (although the latter site has some gory photographs---not for the weak of stomach!). The American Cancer Society site even has a `wizard' to help you through your treatment options (you'll need a copy of your pathology report to use the wizard).
Good luck to you. If you've read this review and plan to get a copy of "The Breast Cancer Companion" (or do other research), then you're obviously beyond denial, and I think that's a very positive sign.

I was wrong thinking it is too much of fat food only. Now, I'm reading this book and learning so much and, finally, know more why my cholesterol is 270 and triglycerides are 575.

This Book Has Saved My Life!Review Date: 2005-06-03
I am a 5'4" 50 year old woman and was weighing 194 lbs. at that time. My doctor immediately prescribed Lopid. I was very upset after reading on the internet the effects of these drugs.
I immediately took action. I followed all recommendations and I never cheated for 6 weeks.
I lowered my triglycerides to a normal 149 and my cholesterol to a normal 192. At that point I was weighing 170 lbs.
My doctor couldn't believe that I did this without the Lopid. Even she asked me what diet I followed!
I am now weighing 155 lbs and have dropped from a size 18 to a size 10. I will recheck my lipids again.
I am so happy and I look 10 years younger!
My Triglycerides Down From 558 to 88Review Date: 2007-12-09
I did what he said, but I have never been one to take prescription drugs, especially those with side effects. I took only ten pills.
I was so happy to find "Bring Your Triglycerides Down Naturally."
I read the book. I began walking (fast) 60 min. every day. I changed my diet completely. I used this book as a guideline to form my new eating habits and meal plans, and change my nutritional supplements.
My routine lab results were:
Triglycerides: 558
Cholesterol: 257
HDL: unable to measure
LDL: unable to measure
Weight: 153
Three months later:
Triglycerides: 88
Cholesterol: 143
HDL: 63
LDL: 67
Weight: 137
When I started reading the book I was a bit skeptical. Now, I will follow this program for the rest of my life. I'm surprised to say that...
Highly Recommended ReadingReview Date: 2006-08-02
First of all, it is the work of someone who speaks from experience. Therefore, all of the information is very practical and easy to understand and remember.
When you read that "high triglycerides are bad for you," the author does not stop there. He does his best to let you know what can be done about it. Or more precisely, what YOU can do about it.
Indeed, this book clears lots of existing confusion on triglycerides (and the other blood fats) by telling you things your doctor is not going even mention to you.
Of course, you may find some of the more demanding dietary recommendations in this book uncomfortable, but you know that they have been made keeping your health and well-being in mind. And that counts.
It is a highly recommended reading.

Perhaps the best book about the best mind-body method out there!Review Date: 2007-01-27
However, having been developed by a physicist with a profound knowledge of kinetics and neurophysiology, neither the practice nor theory is particularly accessible. This book remedies the situation, simplifying the entry point without losing the essential flavour. The author, Frank Wildman, is a genius practitioner. I have personally witnessed him achieve the seemingly miraculous with a number of people suffering severe difficulties.
If, like them, you've been there and done that, yet still feel there must be something more, this could be it. The trick with this method is learning to do less, not more. It took me years to learn and I'm a practitioner!
Do give this book a try. It will at least make you question some commonly held assumptions about health and well-being. It may even change your life!

I already loved the calcium-rich ingredients that this book relies on (dark leafy greens, tofu, almonds - to name a few) but the recipes are creative enough that they can hopefully win over those who do not.
Many of the recipes take quite a bit of time to prepare. That is the primary reason that I do not use this cookbook more often. However, if you plan ahead you can prepare some of the ingredients while others are cooking to save time.

A Psychotherapist's ViewReview Date: 2001-01-11
I referred one of my counseling clients to attend one of Fred Burggraf's series of four CAMP sessions after we had been working on her weight difficulties for quite a while. She had all the intellectual understanding but the principles outlined in this book helped her to begin to really practice mindfulness in eating -- plus the other parts of the program -- and she says, "that has made all the difference" -- her pounds are coming off and she knows this time, they will stay off since this is definitely not a diet program but a "quality of life for a lifetime program."
So much of this practical, easily understood book is directly related to learning to think about and experience food in a new way and to eat differently.
I also see this approach as a metaphor for a mindful and certainly spiritual approach to living each day to the fullest. Yes, it is primarily about achieving balance and harmony in the eating arena but if one follows the authors suggestions, it will lead to balance and harmony as a way of life.
Lastly, the author serves as a role model in the best sense of that term. He depicts his own struggles with his weight and the illness that was made worse by the weight. The "participatory" development of his method is truly his special gift to the world -- by transforming his own pain, mental and physical, into health and creativity, by changing his attitudes and habits, he invites others to follow in his footsteps. Bravo!
Addendum: The CAMP of the title is an acronym representing the four primary hubs of Mr. Burggraf's method. It is only an interesting synchronicity that I share the name of this book.

Is wheat making you ill? Read this book!Review Date: 2006-11-11
I have multiple food allergies and sensitivities. I have avoided wheat for over ten years and have read extensively about food allergies and nutritional therapies. This is the first book that explains clearly how gluten sensitivity leads to other dietary problems such as dairy intolerance. Now I wish that I had known early on that I should not consume gluten (which is in wheat and certain other grains). Perhaps my long list of food allergies would be much shorter.
Rosenvold also explains how gluten sensitivity can worsen the symptoms of a number of other conditions include MS, schizophrenia, and dementia. Recent news reports on a study of dementia proved him correct on this count.
Readers who have a relative with celiac disease should read this book because they may have the disease too. Avoiding gluten is not really terrible - just shop the perimeter of the supermarket (produce, meat, dairy), check out the rice products and the health food aisle, skip the convenience foods (sorry!), and read the labels. New label rules have made it MUCH easier to avoid gluten.
This is an excellent book for consumers, nutritionists, and even doctors - especially doctors! Celiac disease is not as rare as once thought. Rosenvold does not sensationalize the subject or make outrageous claims as many writers do on diet-related topics.
A great gift for skeptical family members and/or friends.Review Date: 1998-11-16
Researchers continue to find immunological evidence to support Dr. Rosenvold's claims. This heroic work was published before most of these researchers were willing to grant more than a coincidental genetic association between celiac disease and autoimmunity.
The alcohol soluble proteins from wheat, rye, barley, and perhaps, oats appear to begin many of the associated illnesses in celiac disease. Rosenvold's suggestions of the incidence of health problems arising out of immune reactions to these proteins are very similar to those numbers revealed by very recent reports of serological screening.
If a hero is a person who is well ahead of his time, then Dr. Rosenvold is just that .......a hero of modern medicine. His book offers information, guidance, and insight into the complex problems induced by dietary gluten in those without the ability to properly metabolize these relatively modern foods.
Loved ones may come to understand the importance of compliaince with the diet, as well as considering the possibility that the diet might help with some of their health challenges.
best wishes, Ron Hoggan
It points the way to solve many problemsReview Date: 2000-05-28
In my case, I had been feeling so week that I was contemplating asking my children to come get me and take care of me because I just had no energy to work any more. I had been waking up with an eletrical discharge from my brains every morning. It was terrifying. My muscles were weak and sore. One morning I knelt by my bed and asked God to please show me what was wrong with me if I still had a mission in this world.
It was than that books like Dr. D'Adamo's and Dr. Rosenvolt's fell in my hands. Dr. D'Adamo mentioned the problem with gluten and made me interested in knowing more about it. Then I was ready for Dr. Rosenvolt's book.
I could see my story and the story of some other members of my family in his accounts.
I immediately cut gluten out of my diet and began fo feel more energetic and the short circuits disappeared. Now, two and a half year later I'm fifty three and work 50 hours a week as a teacher.
My daughter lives in the USA and I in Brazil. Soon after I began to feel better she, pregnant of about 16 weeks, called, very up set because the doctor had said that she was going to lose the baby because her liver had stopeed funtioning and the toxins were building up fast and she may have eclampsia at any time. I mentioned to her what I had read and that to me had worked wonders, but she didn't see much sense in it. A week later she was desesperate and upon my insistence she decided to try a gluten free diet. In only three days she eliminate four pounds of toxins and her liver began to funtion again.
Although her doctor was very happy and told her to keep the diet, he never even asked her what kind of diet it was. When it was about time for her to have the baby and I was already there, I heard him say: "Young lady you are fine now but for a while there, I thought you wouldn't get here." It is thanks to God, Dr. D'Adamo and Dr. Rosenvolt that I can work again, have my daughter without sacrificing my grand daughter.

LICENSED NURSE WITNESSED VIT. C THERAPYReview Date: 2004-03-25
I still don't believe it and neither did the neuro surgeons.
This book explains why the A.M.A. and how the A.M.A. discredits vitamin c trials and their results by pointing out the discrepancies in testing, misleading language, and a total lack of objectivity which should always be prevalent in any scientific discussion. Really, if a therapy is safe, cheap, and provides hope, what's the big objection?
A real eye opener! Extremely informative! A must for all cancer patients!
Significant increases in life expectancy with vitamin CReview Date: 2001-03-05
