Simple, easy, feels great. Of course different people will enjoy different yoga styles. Most of these postures are lying down or sitting. This book is definitely worth adding to your understanding.

This book appears so simple, yet everytime I read it I find something new. It is the perfect companion for practicing. The format is excellent, the illustrations well done and the instructions are clear. 8 progressive practice plans in the back of the book include proper timing, correct sequences and drawings of each posture. Beginning breathing practices ( Pranayama ) and relaxation techniques are also included. Are you interested in practicing traditional Classical Yoga? Then begin with this book. Practice and have fun!!! Lauri

I purchased this book two years ago to familiarize myself with Yoga. I could barely bend and had back problems. After six months my flexibility tripled and I was hooked. I now take classes. I've since purchased this book for many relatives and friends who have expressed a Yoga interest. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

I bought this book on the advice of a friend who knows a fair amount about Yoga. Just to make sure, I compared it with other books on the shelves of a New Age bookstore. I saw dozens of books about Yoga, some big and lavishly illustrated coffee-table books, some detailed treatises with clinical/anatomical exegesis. There was even an "Idiot's guide" to Yoga.

This book was not only the simplest, but also the most authentic one, without a lot of hi-tech jargon, and with clear illustrations, and speaking from a true love of the tradition, exemplified by a photo of Patrap's distinguished teacher on the flyleaf, followed by the introductory quotation: "Let wellness and prosperity be bestowed upon you."

The book consists of individual descriptions of 27 poses, followed by a collection of several multi-pose "practise plans" geared to different levels of difficulty. There is also a glossary of Indian technical terms.

I have been doing the most beginner-level practise plan for about 6 months now off and on, and it always does make me feel much better. When I first began to do it, I had to look at the book a lot to remember what to do, but eventually I learned it by heart and it became much more fluid, so that it's easy and relaxing to do, and I really do feel like doing it when I need to relax and stretch out. But the benefits of this exercise go beyond just stretching out - there's something about the sequence of poses that not only stretches your muscles but also establishes good circulation and restores stressed-out nerves. The result is not quite as powerful as going swimming, but you can do it in your bedroom!

This book is so much fun! I love it because Rania describes how to do different bellydance moves in detail and the pictures are excellent. She has great bellydance fitness DVD's too. She was a winner at the Bellydance of the Universe contest. She went to the contest to make friends and ended up winning in one of the competitions. If you are in the area, she owns a dance studio in Huntinton Beach, CA.

A must for all levels of bellydancing!!!

I have been bellydancing for over 2 years now and I own dozens upon dozens of bellydance DVDs and a few books. I absolutely love this book and the cd is just fantastic. I am constantly recommending this book and all of Rania DVDs to everyone I know who is interested in bellydance. Everything about this book is informative and encouraging! Because of her DVDs and book, I am so proud to say I bellydance!

I just bought this book yesterday. I am very happy with my purchase; more so with the purchase of her videos. What made me pick the book up off the shelf was the vivid color pictures on the front and back covers. That is was also made me buy it. Rania manages to overcome the hurdle of trying to teach dance moves from a book by having 3 or 4 serial shots of her performing some of the moves. She also demonstrates the importance of proper posture by showing several side views of herself performing.
What I also liked is the fact that she devotes a chapter to describing the aerobic benefits of Bellydance, then underneath the title of each move she demonstrates, she gives a brief description of what the benefits are for that particular move.
She also demonstrates the Khaleegy Head Toss and the Zar Head Roll, mentioning that that the head roll should only be done once or twice, lest you hurt your neck.
There is a short chapter on the history of Bellydance, her own introduction to the dance, layering movements for a routine, balancing and floor work, use of a veil, warm-ups, and a glossary of terms.
She lost one star because the included music CD was so-so (some of it was a repeat from the Bellydance Divas dvd), and the fact that she says in the book that she tells people all the time that Bellydance is her only workout; she does not lift weights. Then she mentions in another part of the book that she used to take gymnastics when she was younger. That gave me the impression that she was never overweight (like I am now). So I think that she has no knowledge of what it takes to "Shimmy away the fat"
However, I am happy that I bought this book.
CHALLENGE: I would like to challenge Rania or another certified fitness trainer/dancer to take an overweight person and slim them down and get them fit with bellydance and diet alone.

The creator of the wildly popular "Bellydance Fitness for Weight-Loss" video series presents Bellydancing For Fitness: The Sexy Art That Tones Your Abs, Butt, And Thighs, a straightforward introduction to bellydance moves that can be incorporated into a solid and beautiful exercise workout. Full-color photographs clearly illustrate warm-up stretches, basic movements and poses, and offer suggestions for putting it all together into a dance routine. The texts describe what to do and how to do in detail, and an accompanying music CD offers 40 minuts of modern, enthusiastic bellydance music to get one started shaking the fat away! A delightful and effective guide to enhancing physical fitness and sex appeal alike.

This is a great book, with tons of gorgeous pictures and info about starting bellydance. Rania is also gorgeous, but not in an intimidating way, so you feel like you could be just as sexy as she is by bellydancing. This book and the one by Tamalyn Dallal definitely have a place on my bookshelf now, and the CD that comes with this book, which is full of great songs to get you started, has an almost permanent home in my CD player.

This book is like a bacon lettuce and tomato sandwich - Tasty and not overly filling - A Classic! It provides basic advice on health matters from a good old fashioned positive perspective. Moderation and prevention are stressed. It offers no miracle cures and it is not an encyclopedia of technical information. Rather it is a well balanced approach to healthier living written with insight and a refreshing light hearted wit. Just what the doctor ordered!

Better Health not only makes a lot of sense, it is an enjoyable read. The author has treated subjects that often are tedious to read with common sense and humor. The format of specificsubjects done in short chapters is conducive to being picked up when you have a few spare minutes. Keep it on your nightstand. I've already picked up a few good ideas and have given a copy to a friend. Try it, you'll like it and benefit.

This is just my type of book. Well-written, concise, intelligent and informative. I've been looking for quite some time for someone to navigate me through the confusing maze of health information that is thrown at us every day. This author is able to distill the medical complexities into practical and timely advice. It is clear that he has done a great deal of research and has talked to many of the leaders in the fields that are discussed. But he has taken all of the detail and simplified it. He talks to the reader in the way you would like a good general practitioner to give advice -- to the point, constructive and non-judgmental. The book stresses moderation, not extremism. Best of all, the author has a great sense of humor that helps to make these serious subjects easier to digest. I recommend the book highly.

A great book on Bhakti & Karma Yoga

This book is one of the very few books that we have on the topic of bhakti and karma yogas that explains very clearly what they actually are.

The science of devotion or bhakti is constant love for god, through which one reaches enlightenment. The path of liberation through one's actions is the path of karma yoga.

Yogani explains very well the differences and similarties between these two paths and how they relate to AYP system of practices.

I also highly recommend to everyone another book written by Yogani which explains all the spiritual practices of ancient times which were hidden to the modern world till now. This book is considered and rated by many as "The BIBLE of Spirituality" and I highly recommend this to every spiritual aspirant who wants to make progress on the path. Here is the link...

Bhakti and Karma Yoga is the 8th book in the AYP Enlightenment series and a definite read for those who seek self-realization.

I've never found any other books by anyone else who lays out a more clear, effective and easy to follow path to self realization or enlightenment than Yogani. Many like to talk about what self-realization is like but few understand and effectively communicate the practical and easy to apply methods that will take you there as fast as possible. This little book is easy to understand, well-written and contains lot's of new material by Yogani.

I highly recommend Bhakti and Karma Yoga and will only add to your understanding of what is required on the path to self-realization.

The sparkle of a life of actions powered by love

Nothing is as sobering as facing oneself.

Our actions and their consequences are themselves devine teachers. This is what life is! Everything you need in order to realize your true nature is right here.....in every instant. You don't have to move, nor extract yourself from an ordinary life. When greater awarenes saturates our being (through deep meditation or other spiritual practises) it follows that desires transform into a conscious longing for the devine. The implicit intelligence that is life itself wants to know itself fully. So we long for this "coming home to ourselves". When your heart is turned towards the devine, it becomes obvious that your actions are powered by love. You then become even more aware through allowing life to live you. Through this great little book, Yogani explains the simple - yet profound - principles that together form the key to living in the lucid, loving freedom that is our true nature.
Read and enjoy!

Nothing is as joyful as being a conscious expression of this love.

Review Date: 2008-06-11
If you aren't familiar with Bhakti or Karma Yoga, this is probably the best introduction you can get. If you are familiar, it's great review, and great inspiration. That's a pattern with Yogani's books: good introduction for the unfamiliar, good review and inspiration for people with some familiarity!

Bhakti and Karma yoga are roughly the 'yogas' of DEVOTION and ACTION. However, no yoga approach is fundamentally isolated, rather, they all belong to a bigger unified system whose common purpose is human spiritual development -- Yoga. Yoga is in a sense a system of tools for spiritual development. ( I mean 'tool' very broadly -- even a way of looking at things can count as a tool. ) The mind likes to usefully put these tools into boxes, and two of these boxes are called Bhakti and Karma yoga. Sometimes a tool fits in either box, and that is fine and to be expected. In fact, all the tools are related and have a common purpose -- spiritual carpentry.

You'll get one of the best explanations of Bhakti and Karma Yoga (and any of the types of Yoga) from Yogani, simply because yoga can only be properly explained by someone who really understands it intimately, as a master practitioner --- and he does. If you read the book, you'll understand the carpentry, and once the carpentry makes sense, the tools make sense, and once the tools make sense, the way all the tools fit together make sense.

Like all of Yogani's books on yoga, the book is aimed towards helping people practically on their spiritual journey. They keep to the essentials, emphasize the fundamentals, and clear away a lot of clutter, and in some cases, clear away a lot of confusion. But even though they are aimed for use in personal practice, they'd be great reading too for anyone who wants to really understand yoga from a Religious Studies perspective.

Pssst: I hear Yogani is publishing 'Eight Limbs of Yoga' soon (or some similar title) soon which will surely be another 'must have' for the shopping cart!

All recipes are easy to do.

My Husband was shocked on how wonderful they all have been since they came out a DIABETIC Cookbook.

Highly recommend this item and the price fair.

I purchased at a well known bookstore.

After graduating from college, my skin broke out (I'm a late bloomer). I thought the acne would scar my face forever. Too poor to see a dermatologist, I decided to look for hope in a home remedy. This book saved my face! Within two weeks of following her suggestions for basic skin care routine, my face cleared up completely. I have passed along her regimen to my other friends and family who have encountered acne issues, and they too, have seen magical results! Try her suggestions BEFORE you spend too much time and money at the dermatologist's office!

I have had a slight breakout (3 or 4 noticable eruptions) since my teens. I am now 40, so this was a long time to constantly look in the mirror and see zits. About 4 years ago I checked your Blue Eyeshadow book out of the library. In reading the chapter about breakouts I "pulled" advice from different areas and changed some of my daily routines.

I started washing towels and sheets in perfume and dye free detergent. I stopped using dryer sheets on towels and sheets. I started using a gentle cleanser (I use Alpha Hydrox Foaming Face Wash). And I started using a moisturizer with Beta Hydroxy (I useOlay - age defying protective renewel lotion).

The change in my skin was unbelieveable. Within two weeks, it cleared up completely. A breakout is rare now, and I finally have the skin I wanted in my teens. My skin feels smoother and I have even noticed that a few lines here and there seem lighter. I have told this regimen to any friends that ask and they have tried it. Everyone who has tried it has commented on the change in their skin. I have been using it for 4 years now and am still as happy as when I started using it.

This last Winter, my skin felt drier than usual, so I tried the new Kinetin moisurizer by Almay. I really like it a lot and was wondering your take on it. I am still using the Olay at night. I cannot thank you enough. If not for you, I would someday be ordering Oxy 10 from my bed in the nursing home. Thank You for caring.

Review Date: 2007-12-18
Alan Davidson is an inspirational writer as well as a keenly tuned guide to better health (physical and mental) through his detailed and well-illustrated exercises and modes of meditation. What sets Davidson apart starts in his introduction: he shares a moment from 1987 when he sat in a waiting room for the results of his HIV test. His thoughts and observations of the others in that frightening room set the stage for his discovery that, even though he had every reason to believe that he would be 'positive', his test results were negative - a moment of reality testing that forged his path to work with himself and with others through discipline and training to celebrate the body and the joy of being completely alive. What followed is culminated in this very fine book BODY BRILLIANCE.

Combining philosophy with physical dexterity Davidson leads the reader through all manner of exercises and positions. As the subtitle of the book suggests, these contemplations or attitudes are based on the FIVE VITAL INTELLIGENCES: The Physical, The Emotional, The Mental, The Moral and The Spiritual. Accompanying Davidson's path to wellness are excerpts from famous minds, drawing upon ancient as well as contemporary wisdom. In this setting he invites the reader to participate in a series of exercises that when combined have as a goal to wed all five Intelligences, the result being a state of Harmony.

Davidson even makes this an art book by using photographer Victoria Davis to demonstrate each of the verbally described positions and movements. Davis has selected extraordinarily beautiful male and female models, placed them in near negative space so that the 'brilliance' of each body is celebrated. The combination of caring, intelligent thinking and writing, sound physical judgment in approaching exercise, and beautiful photography make this book far more than just a another self help book (though it certainly is that!). This is a book that treats the body and mind and soul and life as art. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 07

This is a wonderful resource for everyone who can benefit from massage. We all need an "occasional tweeking" to keep ourselves feeling great. This book helps you figure out what massage is best for you!

Extremely well-written and well-organized book.

I am a teacher, and so when I read a book, I'm always very aware of how well-organized and well-written it is. I picked up "Bodywork" because I've had lower back pain off and on for years. I was interested in trying some hands-on therapy to help it. Bodywork helped me find some relief for it. My pain is not completely gone, but I am better able to alleviate and manage it than with pills.

What struck me most about "Bodywork" is that in addition to being very informative, it is extremely well-organized and well-written. This makes it a very handy reference book. I found it educational and inspirational, without being "preachy". I recommend this book to any other readers who are interested in learning more about how hands-on therapies can help them.

We are certified massage therapists in the San Francisco Bay area. When clients ask us about lesser known or unfamiliar modalities, this is the book we reach for. It is concise, well-written, easy to understand from the layman's point of view. It has even helped us in the enhancement of our own practice by providing a guide to further studies and research to improve our practice.

OUTSTANDING OVERVIEW OF THE FASCINATING WORLD OF MASSAGE

This is an excellent overview of the fascinating world of massage and body-mind healing therapies. I've always been interested in massage, but had a hard time figuring out what all the different types are. Thomas Claire's BODYWORK helped demystify this world for me. I especially liked the fist-hand account of the experience of different kinds of massage -- they were really helpful. For instance, the first-hand account of a reflexology session helped me understand what foot massage is all about, and to know that I would like to try it.

BEST BOOK ON BODYWORK

This is the best book on bodywork I've read. I love massage, but was confused by all the diffrerent styles that are out there -- Swedish, Alexander, Reiki, Shiatsu -- to name just a few. I've read a lot of books on massage, but it was Thomas Claire's BODYWORK that helped me find the massage that was right for me -- and make the most of it. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in finding out more about massage and bodywork.

THE BONUS YEARS DIET: A CONTRIBUTION TO CULTURE
Ralph Felder's diet book is a lifetime labor of love. Felder, a practicing physician and scientist who holds M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford, and is the author of a book on magnetic resonance imaging, is exceedingly qualified to address the science of health. He handles the interaction between chemistry and health, and the aesthetics of cooking and eating, with an affection that will win your heart. There is enough science here to keep you informed, yet not so much as to lose the thread of health and its by-product, happiness. There are enough recipes to open four successful restaurants serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meticulous attention given to flavor, variety, appearance, and budget (both of time and of money), make The Bonus Years a milestone in human culture.
The idea of Bonus Years is that people want to live longer, and stay healthy when they do; and that diet is the crucial component that can make that (statistically) possible. The book has an easy-to-read, open style that invites you in. Felder's information comes from controlled studies; and he includes a list of references for anyone interested in learning the chemistry and epidemiology at first-hand. The strategy is that certain medicines, aspirin, folic acid, statin, and blood-pressure medicines, which reduce the risk of heart disease and debilitating high blood pressure, can be obtained more pleasantly by eating the right foods. These are red wine, dark chocolate, fruits and vegetables, fish, garlic and nuts. These, combined with such irresistibles as sirloin steak, olive oil, honey, turkey, whole-wheat pasta, and many others, offer about as pleasant a way of staying healthy as can be imagined. If one of the core foods doesn't appeal to you, you can omit it without much penalty. The statistically demonstrable extra six years of life gives The Bonus Years Diet a scientific foundation that is unique. The recipes are inspired. Even if you don't believe in diets, you should read The Bonus Years Diet to see the place in human culture of the humane interaction between science, cooking, health, and eating. --Bill Abler

An incredibly useful and informative book. At last something about lifestyle which makes sense and is fun at the same time. I congratulate the author for making such complex stuff so understandable.

My daughter bought this book for me after reading about it in Oprah magazine. Dosing food like doctors dose pills. A great idea. Dr. Felder gives us menus for an entire month and that makes it so easy to follow this diet. The recipes are great. He is a chef and knows his stuff! My husband loves chocolate so his new favorite dessert is the chocolate risotto pudding. I love the stuffed french toast. I just saw Dr. Felder on tv and as he says "this is a diet we cal live with."

I own many cookbooks but this is absolutely one of my favorites. I love the healthy aspects of this book. I appreciate all of the research put into it---delicious dishes based on science, but wow do I thoroughly enjoy the recipes. Dr. Felder's Chefs hat shines through here. I love the pan-grilled salmon with frisee salad lyonnaise--excellent!! The black bean chili is delicious and the crab salad with creamy dressing is the best. Another favorite is the salmon with shanghi red sauce. What a grerat combination, a MD and Chef. No wonder this book is so good.

Overall this book is a wonderful picture of how one should eat. My family and I are pretty healthy eaters already but I just had my third baby and trying to loose the last few pounds. So after I saw this book in the O magazine I picked it up and loved it. I can't put it down. The recipes are so yummy. My husband loves garlic so this fits in perfectly with our lifestyle. The only thing that I would comment on is, for being a pretty new book, it sure is not up to date on the correct serving for fruits and vegetables. Back in 2004 they uped the recommended servings from 5-10 to 7-13. Big difference. I mean if you aren't eating your fruits and veggies already then going from none to 5 is a great start. But for those of us who already are eating the recommended servings this was kind of sad that that's all that the book recommended. But I still love the book and would recommend it to anyone just ad that major key factor.
