I am a family nurse practitioner. I found the book to be very clear and comprehensive. If you're male and over 40, this is required reading!

The most important book you many ever read....

This book could very easily save your life. While it reaffirmed things I know about fiber, insulin, and exercise, it gave me a lot of new information about how to keep from getting prostate cancer (like my father had), and other important information. It also described "insulin resistance", which is something that I have and has baffeled my doctor for well over a year! Dr. Bob, thanks for writing this great book.

This is a serious step in the right direction to minimize the possibility of developing Prostate Cancer. Many volumes have been written on dealing with the disease after detection but nothing notable of taking preventive measures. This should be must reading for every man!

Great on nutrition but biased & simplistic re: surgery

Review Date: 2001-02-19
This book is entertainingly and enthusiastically written and gives excellent information on how to eat to avoid prostate cancer or counteract prostate cancer--help slow or stop its growth--once you have it. I was apalled, however, at how Arnot started his chapter on "surgery," describing two groups of couples in which the men had prostate cancer. The one, happy giggling group was composed of couples where the decision was to "watch and wait" regarding the prostate cancer--in other words, not have radiation or surgery for the present. In the other group, the men had had surgery within the previous year and "These men appeared morose, even depressed. Many complained of the need to wear diapers. Months after the operation, many no longer had any sex life at all."

This picture is biased, black-and-white, unrealistic and I beleive cruel to people who are trying to decide what to do about prostate cancer. Surgery IS the gold standard treatment for younger men with cancer detected early--men who might die prematurely and very painfully if they did not have surgery, which has a better than 90 percent chance of curing them. And certainly men like Bob Dole, General Schwarzkopf and thousands of others who had surgery are not morose and feeling as if their lives are over--in fact they probably feel a lot better than the 30 percent of those who watch and wait and after ten years have cancer spreading throughout their bodies.

People have to make their choices as best they can, and both watchful waiting and surgery can be appropriate. Arnot's description painting surgery as totally black was neither good journalism nor good medicine, and as the wife of a 59-year-old-man who will probably have surgery, I did not appreciate the depiction. Less than 8 percent (some say 2 pwercent) of men wear diapers after recovery from surgery and all who have surgery are certainly NOT MOROSE compare to all who wait being giddy and happy. For the fifty to thirty percent who cannot have natural erections, there are several good alternatives that will make the penis errect--and the nerves that cost erections DO NOT hinder sensation or orgasm in anyone--men may not get errect but they can feel and have orgasms! Many people take the lemons of this experience and the surgery and make lemonade, glad to be alive and have a chance at a cure. Making a blanket and untrue statement that suggest surgery leads to moroseness is neither helpful, accurate or true. The next edition of this otherwise very good book should correct that.

I book this book back in 1973 and then lost it in a flood but was able to get a copy at a used book store. These were the real champions and pioneers of bodybuilding; Arnold, Nubret, Columbu, Zane, Corney, Waller, Katz etc.You rarely see training photo's like this and heretofore, never saw bodybuilders depicted as real people as Gaines and Butler did with this work and the movie that followed.Pumping Iron and a Mega-Superstar German with a hard to prononunce last name literally took bodybuilding into the mainstream and turned the stars of our sport into household names. While I was lucky to find a copy of this book at a used book store, I really feel that Gaines and Butler should have a reprint for people who would like a new, first class copy; perhaps even a revised version showing where those champions are today.Great book Mr. Gaines and Mr. Butler.

The Dirty Little Secret

Review Date: 2005-09-09
I agree with all above that this is a fine book. I wish there were more such insightful forays into other sports. My one quibble with Pumping Iron is that whistles past the graveyard of the great dark evil, steroids. One reading this book would get the impression that all of the bodybuilders within had sculpted their physiques with weightlifting, diet, dedication, and genetics. The truth is, all the stars of that era relied heavily on steroids, as subsequent admissions by such as Arnold Schwarzenegger have revealed. That, and the near-death disaster to Steve Michalik from steroid overdose (the book attributes his great "sea change" gain of muscle mass to heavy weight training and eating a lot of chicken and tuna fish) are crucial facts for the reader to know. To ignore the dirty little secret of big-time bodybuilding is dishonest, and presents a disservice to the readership. I would enthusiastically welcome another edition of Pumping Iron, as suggested above- it's a fine book- but I would repect Messrs. Gaines and Butler the more if they would address the steroid issue.

Intriguing Look At Subculture Of Competitive Bodybuilding!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-09
It is no overstatement to attribute to the publication of this book much of the fitness revolution that first began in the 1970s. It lionized the then relatively obscure sport of bodybuilding, and in particular made much notice of the then only marginally known figure of a relatively young Austrian muscle freak with the unlikely name of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The book proved such a trenchant and penetrating look into the shadowy subculture of fitness freaks and muscle-heads that it created a boom in the gym business, which previously existed only in a few locations where the numbers of bodybuilders reached enough of a critical mass to allow such a commercial venture. In fact, as Gaines points out in the narrative, most of the gyms were owned by guys like Joe Gold, who weren't in the gym business to make a profit, and who merely managed to eke out a living, and who rarely made much of a return on their original investment.

Of course, this affectionate and knowing look at the life and lifestyles of several serious competitive bodybuilders was so successful that it encouraged the photographer, George Butler, to try to find backing for a film version of the book. And it was a difficult sell, for the movie mavens had little appreciation for the degree of public interest in muscles and muscle men then. Indeed, the movie was never released for wide commercial viewing, but was rather relegated to showings at art cinemas and other venues. Yet the book was a resounding success, and was on the best-selling trade books for months and months.

The book can still be found in used bookstores, and is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in the history of bodybuilding or the lifestyles of the most famous musclemen of the late 1960s and 1970s. I have several copies, although I lost one in a fire last year. It is a shame it is now out of print, for the book (and the subsequent movie) capture the essence of the exotic little world of competitive bodybuilding as it existed in the days when the sport was marginalized, before it became big business, and before eager young men who want fame and riches got involved for that reason rather than because they just wanted to be bodybuilders. Ah, the good old days! Enjoy!

Before this book, bodybuilding was an obscure sport that nobody cared about or was interested in. Pumping Iron changed all that with it's realistic look at the sport with many pictures of the champions of the 70's & early 80's at work and play. Shattered many of the myths that people believed about bodybuilders and presented them as ordinary people with an intense drive and competitive will.

This is certainly the best book on nutritional healing that we have found in Spanish. I own all four editions of this book on nutritional healing and we have successfully used all of them over the years. Now our friends who only read and speak Spanish can benefit from the sound advice found in them with this translation of the second edition. We anxiously await the translation of the latest edition. A few names of herbs and nutritional supplements are still in English. A little annoying, but we help our friends with their questions in Mexico where we live.

I read this book as a favor to Elaine's neice. It took me two hours and I couldn't put it down. I met Elaine. She is a spunky and vivacious woman whom I can't believe was on the doors of death just a few short years ago. Her tale of strength and personal power is a lesson to us all. Her desciption of alternative medicine is easy to understand and is a guideline for anyone conisdering an alternative medical lifestyle. It is more than the power of the mind. I have given this book to many people whom I know have been afflicted or have family members that have cancer. It is an inspirational story that even those that are healthy can learn from.

Don't give in to Sarcoma- Cancers! There is Hope !!!

Hi ! My name is Yasmin and I am writing this review to anyone who is in anyway affected by sarcoma cancer. My message is - don't give up ! Let me explain ... My mother (76) was diagnosed with uterine sarcoma-carcinoma in December, 2000 and subsequently underwent a radical hysterectomy, six regimens of chemotherapy during which an abdominal secondary was found and radiotherapy was halted because of its adverse side-effects. For those that do not know - sarcoma is a rare, nasty and aggressive tumour and the medical outlook is very bleak.
I ordered Elaine Nussbaum's book as she seems to have had a similar type of tumour to my mother. Elaine takes you through her initial diagnosis, her treatments, her suffering - the cancer had spread to her lungs and bones and she was confined to a wheelchair. The morning I received this book via Amazon, I read it in the bath - I was engrossed and interested and accompanied Elaine on every stage of her illness. Sarcoma seems to be a dirty word in the medical profession. However, I am writing this to let any Amazon readers know that Elaine became cancer-free and recounts how she took to the platform and spoke to an audience about how she had cured herself of cancer with aid of a macrobiotic diet. I would like to add - her body healed itself using the macrobiotic diet as a tool.
This story shows that can one fight a sarcoma cancer and one does not need to give in and accept death. I do not know Elaine nor am I a macrobiotic pratitioner, but I do know, that this book shows that one does not have to give in to this disease and feel abandoned by the medical profession. Where there is Life there is Hope.
My mother is currently in a hospice and has been told by the medical profession to resign herself to her fate - that of a certain death at the hands of this cancer which spreads like a fast-growing ivy plant. I am going to bring her home...I am going to give macrobiotics a try ...I do not know whether I will succeed ... every case is different ... my mother is old and her body is oh so weary...I will do what I can out of a deep love and because my soul asks me to...
Order this book if you want Hope and if you want to fight your cancer wherever it is) because the Human Spirit (never mind how ill and weary it is) will do all it can to fight this disease - Cancer.
Thank you, Elaine, for giving us Hope...

Yes, sarcomas are nasty and the medical profession has (as yet) very little to offer its 'victims' and that is why this book is worth reading. Whilst one shouldn't hope in vain, one shouldn't resign oneself to this disease either ! Anything is worth a try - Elaine believed in this diet and her positive thinking is a valuable and necessary tool in regaining health.

The exercises presented in this book are effortless, simple, and effective. They are more like neurological lessons than something to rote memorize and do. Through slow, easing, and mindful movements we can learn about our body and how it works. Our subconscious mind starts to reorganize our movements and we feel ourselves functioning with more ease. There are further lessons than these basic ones, but these basic ones can carry you a long way in the process and are a necessary foundation for what comes next. I would recommend some of the cassettes or CDs that verbally guide people through the exercises. It is a little more direct than reading something and then doing it.

I bought this book because it was given to my rolfer by a doctor who treated her for injuries she suffered in an auto accident and she felt I could benefit from doing these exercises as well. She was so right! I have had back and neck injuries resulting from years of heavy lifting as well as several auto accidents in my past. Over many years, I have sought relief from my medical doctor, physical therapist, massage therapist, chiropractor and rolfer and although had improvement, I still had stiffness and low back pain and discomfort every single day. The day this book arrived, I read through it and did a few exercises and from that first day, the pain and stiffness greatly receded and is now gone for the first time in years! The most amazing part is that I received the book less than 2 weeks ago! The exercises are so easy it's hard for me to believe they could work especially since I have done thousands of hours of yoga exercises over the years but it has not accomplished what these exercises have in 15 minutes a day for less than 2 weeks! Amazing!!

This set of exercises has been the only thing that has proved beneficial to my trigeminal neuralgia. On days when I could not do even yoga; when I could not even brush my teeth, my Feldenkrais exercises were what helped relax and reorient my muscles so that I could function.

Easy, relaxing, you can do some of these exercises anywhere--even in the choir loft or on the train--with nobody knowing but yourself, and the benefits are noticeable immediately, but progressive. I love this book!

I've read Amazon reviews for years, but never bothered to write one. I have to write a review of this book to tell people how wonderful it is. I own many Feldenkrais books, and this one takes first prize for ease of use and effectiveness. It really works! The instructions are so simple and well-illustrated - and the exercise so short and easy to do - you'll never want to stop doing them. Look, the proof is in the pudding, and I've used this book religiously for over 6 months! It has helped straighten my scoliosis and I feel, move and look like a brand new person. Please, if you don't like it, send it back, but spend the money if you're at all interested in learning about the brilliant Feldenkrais method. It'll be the best $15 you ever spend. It was for me.

I have recommmended this book to clients after they have finished their Medical Doctor and Physcial Therapist Interventions. I believe it assists traditional medical interventions to be even more effective by naturally restoring lost mobility and movement patterns.

While Dr Guns has written an extremely motivational book for the stroke survivor (and caregiver), the absolutely best thing about this book is that it provides a road map to success: actual, practical steps to follow that will make a difference. It is not a feel good book, some of it is hard, and forces one to face reality- but that is the first step to progress. I believe that this book would be useful to a larger portion of the population than just the stoke survivor community. Many people with some form of physical disability or limitation can use some of the steps to make real improvements in their everyday abilities. Even more important than physical improvement is the chance to sharpen and focus one's view of one's situation, even if the final determination is that improvements are not physically possible.

Dr. Guns has an excellent view of how to approach a new idea to the stroke survivor and empathy for the caregiver, as he is a survivor himself.

He and his program RAISE the hopes and help to revitalize the survivor's outlook on life.
Using basic concepts of Reflect, Analyze, Identify, Start, and Evaluate (RAISE) emphasizes thinking and preparation for obtaining a goal or goals for the stroke survivor, giving both the survivor and the caregiver the written tools, which they themselves create, to follow and remember/review. The key in the program success is for the survivor and the caregiver to create their own plan, not have it pushed at them by someone else.

This program can be used by anyone struggling to set goals along the way to overcoming a challenge.

Having used and continue to use/update the program and my goals as a survivor, it still continues to amaze me at how much these simple steps have improved my life.

Dr. Bob provides a practical "How to" that will enable you to improve if you do the work.

It is much more than a handbook.

It is way more than what I was expecting. It is much read for stroke survivors and caregivers alike.

How to Have a Long-Distance Cycling Adventure--Witty, Practical, Inspiring Read!

From the first glimmer of the idea--"Why not ride the entire coast of California on my bike?--!" to the practice rides and training, mishaps, the sign-up for--in this case--the AIDS LIfeCycle Ride, the fundraising, the day by day on the route, the apparel (what-- me worry about how I look in spandex?), the gear, the people--everything you need to know about taking on a long-distance cycling challenge in this practical, accurate, observant and witty memoir. Talented author Russell Mendivil's book is a how to--but so much more. Funny and fast-paced I couldn't put it down--except when I got out there on my bike! For anyone thinking about taking on a big physical challege (eg., the big birthday denial adventure) or anyone who knows someone who is doing the AIDS ride or anything similar--this book is a must read. Loved it! (Full disclosure: I'm not his wife; I don't even know him.).

I just finished the book and thought it was fantastic! In five weeks, I will be riding in AIDS/Lifecycle6 to L.A. This book was recommended by a ride leader, and it was worth every minute spent reading and every penny buying it. Russ is a great rider and he captures perfectly the emotional and physical process getting ready for the ride can be. I laughed so hard reading parts that I woke my husband. I also cried at the touching perspectives on why we are riding - to end AIDS! After the 80 mile 'Day on the Ride' (practice day for the real thing) last weekend, I met Russ and he is as genuine as they come.

...absolutely inspirational

I just finished reading Russ's book. Wow! I could not put this book down. He truly captures an experience of a lifetime -- riding your bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles for seven days to support people living with HIV/AIDS. He vividly describes the full range of people, places and happenings with wit and compassion. In the process he brings the reader into every phase of the AIDS Lifecycle event -- from the motivation to sign-up, the nervous jitters of the first training ride, the ups and downs of training, the thrill of the ride itself and the comaraderie of a community of fellow cyclists and roadies along the way.

As I read, I was moved to tears one moment, then a few pages later, I was laughing out loud. If you are looking for a book that shows you what human beings are capable of when they work together and support each other through tremendous challenges, then this book is for you. It is absolutely inspirational! A must read!

This book will inspire you.

Russ captures the difficulty of accomplishing something extraordianary with wit and wisdom. He shows us how something that seems impossibly difficult can be achieved with will and training. If you are in need of inspiration this is a must read.

I read Russ's book which I bought on Memorial Day this year. I read it in about two days since I was going on this year's AIDS/Lifecycle5 Ride June 4th and wanted an up close and personal look at what I was going to experience as a first time rider. Not only was it great in capturing the experience but it was inspirational to me to feel like I could actually do the ride. I also identified with the author in the circumstances of being middle-aged, recently trimmed-down, and a recovered heart patient. The subtitle, "How to Ride Your Bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles Without Even Dying," was exactly the guidance I wanted!

His descriptions of cycling the 2005 training rides in the Bay Area were extremely true to my experiences cycling the same 2006 training rides. And now that I have completed every one of the 585 miles in the 2006 AIDS/Lifecycle 5 Ride, I will attest to the fact that the chapters about the Ride itself are also right on target, including descriptions of camp, interaction with the riders, and crazy things that happen along the way.

More than just a documentation of what happened, the book stands on its own as an entertaining and absorbing piece. Russ's humor comes through big time. His style is funny and down to earth. I thoroughly enjoyed the fluid pace and breezy delivery.

Whether or not you are a long distance cyclist, are planning on experiencing the ALC ride, or are just someone who enjoys upbeat experiences vicariously, this book is a great read.

Here's a book I highly and repectfully recommend of AAs, 12 Step recovery people, and Big Book and Bible study groups. If you want a suggestion for what to use in reviewing early A.A. spiritual principles, renewed mind Bible segments, and further Bible study, this is the book or you. Dr. Bob used it regularly and recommended it highly. Its great virtue is that it fits early A.A. needs and practices to a "T." It ranked high in topical Bible study. SeeThe Good Book and the Big Book: A.A.'s Roots in the Bible (Bridge Builders Edition). It ranked high in the books that A.A.'s cofounder Dr. Bob studied, recommended, and circulated Dr. Bob and His Library: A Major A.A. Spiritual Source. It was the type of study guide that followed the lines of Christian Endeavor groups who had Bible studies, prayer meetings, conversions, Quiet Hour, and reading religious literature. These were the principles Dr. Bob learned as a youngster in Vermont.Dr. Bob of Alcoholics Anonymous: His Excellent Training in the Good Book As a Youngster in VermontAnd it certainly belongs in the library of those observing morning quiet times Good Morning!: Quiet Time, Morning Watch, Meditation, and Early A.A.

I LOVE this Bible. I first came across it when I found a very old version from 1913. My old one is very small in size and so old it is falling apart. I did a search to get a new one to carry and a few extras to share others. Even in the newer version it is still the same word for word. It is very easy to use and just what you need if your on the run! The title couldn't be more PERFECT!

This book from 1910 does exactly what it describes by providing a quick-start for devotionals. By selecting a verse or two by subject or at random, you have a meaningful focus for reflection, meditation or prayer immediately. It is not surprising that my experience is that God uses my selections for current issues in my life. This guide works easily with other disciplines, because you can adjust the time for reflection or prayer to the time you make for it. Just like Oswald Chamber's My Utmost for His Highest, devotions from the early part of the 20th century seem to be as timeless and eternally important as the Bible.

I found this book while looking for some history in the
kind of meditation books for recovering alcoholics. People
who have proved that their lives have changed miraculously
by the practice of principles and living on spiritual basis.
This little book is amazing. Just a few lines of encouragement
each day. Spirituality is indeed a feeding of the mind on the
wholeness and beauty that comes from God. Many basic principles
learned here add peace to my life. The combination of scriptures

with little commentary is especially good for those of us looking
to feed ourselves spiritually in a short time - on the run.
Sometimes you can find a real gem. This book is so simply but
edifying and uplifting. To meditate on my heavly Father (from
whom all blessings flow). Use it. I'm thankful I found it.
My husband didn't read much scripture -- but he does read this
little book.!! Thanks to the Author!!

I found some of the techniques employed in the recipes of this low-fat kosher cook book to be particularly helpful and time-saving. It is very informative with respect to Jewish dietary laws and the tempting-looking color photographs are an additional bonus. The results obtained were excellent so I have to say that it's my kind of cook book.

An incredibly unique kosher cook book.

"Secrets Of Fat Free Kosher Cooking" is an incredibly unique cook book. It's well written and arranged. Each page includes easy to follow illustrations and prepartion directions. Whether you are an experienced cook, or just starting out you can be successful with the recipes. I like the fact that the ingredients and directions are on the same page. The book includes metric conversion tables, not to mention facts related to nutrition and healthy eating.

The book is full of traditional recipes...chicken soup, matzoh balls, guiltfree hamentaschen, latkes, kugels, cholent...and much more. On the comtemporary side I found, tex mex cholent, buffalo wings, chili, burritos, chocolate chip cookies....there is something for everyone in this book.

I showed this book to my dentist, at the time he was doing the family cooking. He asked if he could take the book home and try some of the recipes. I said sure. The follow week he told me he was ordering three books. One for himself, one for his rabbi, and for the temple library. But...could he keep my copy until his recieved his.

I also sent copies of Secrets Of Fat Free Kosher Cooking to both of my sons. My older son is a bachelor and does all his own cooking. He loves this book. Using this cook book is easy and fool proof. My favorite is "chiken with potatoes lyonnaise." Thank you Dr. Bernstein.

In "The Secrets of Fat-Free Kosher Cooking", Deborah Bernstein, M.D. provides us with a large variety of mouth watering, lowfat recipes which essentially are quite simple to assemble. In addition, the author clearly explains all recipes while giving the reader background information and amusing stories, relating to the importance of the recipe, and which also bring balance to the wonderful illustrations. Among other timely tidbits, the reader will also learn about the laws of Kashrus. To sum up, this recipe book is an attractive, compilation of facts, and pictures, that will find a wide and appreciative audience. A very laudable effort.
