This book is great for moms who really want to have healthier kids and isn't that a mother's main job in life? to raise healthy happy kids? I searched for 10 years, always believing that there was something out there that was out of my view, alas, I finally found it. If we accept our own divinity then we can understand why homeopathy works.

For moms who want a more than "medicine" can offer

Are you frustrated by traditional medicine and tired of your children being put on antibiotics all too often? Are you considering homeopathy? If you answered "yes" to these questions then the book Medicine Moms should be a reference book on your shelf. Uhl is not a doctor but a mother. She and others like her had grown weary of treating their children's ailments with risky traditional medicine. These "medicine moms" discovered that ages old homeopathy really did work for their kids and began to research it, learning more about its application. While the author states clearly in the book that a certified homeopath should always be consulted in the uses of homeopathic remedies, in this book she explains clearly and in lay people's terms why homeopathy works, how it works and for whom it works. I learned more from reading this book than from going to a homeopath for the past two years. I now understand many of the remedies he suggested for me for various conditions, just based on what I read in Medicine Moms. As I read about how Medicine Moms came to be, I was reminded of the founders of La Leche League International. Mothers in search of information about and support for nursing founded what is today an international organization dedicated to breastfeeding. "Medicine Moms" is a term used by the author for mothers wanting a better course of action for their kids than traditional medicine. Through their own research and support, they began to share what they knew about homeopathy and watched in amazement as their kids responded to homeopathic remedies for various ailments, without the side effects of prescription drugs. This book is easy to read and gives the reader a basic understanding of the workings of homeopathy, its history, its philosophy and its successes.

Why are so many parents using homeopathy for kids? Medicine Moms isn't written by a doctor, but by a parent who became frustrated with conventional treatments for common childhood ailments. From earaches and allergies to avoiding antibiotics and preventing colds, Medicine Moms provides detailed information on not just herbal applications, but how to make the transition from conventional treatment to homeopathy, how to use both together, and when to choose one over the other.

I got what I expect when buying this book. I like the organize of the book. However, I feel like it misses something (maybe it is my fault). I am new for the smoothie kind. Therefore, I am not familiar with the ingredients to make a smoothie drink. The book does not have figures or details of the ingredients, so I am not sure what they look like or where I can buy them. But overall, I enjoy the book.

Great purchase!

After mixing up a batch of her `Power Vision' (page 61) and taking a sip, I had a brief delightful flash, which made me feel as though I was basking in the actual healing presence of Ms. Chace herself. Indeed, the next day, after sipping some `Pure Joy' (page 209) I realized that by following the nurturing advice inherent throughout her Smoothie's book, Ms. Chace has made me feel richer than any Manhattan Bank. Perhaps I should try next, Daniella's `Brain Food' (page 252), to help me straighten up and fly right, since up until discovering this book, I've been sipping too much from my old family recipe, `Smoothies for Stooges': Six parts gin, 5 parts vermouth, a dash of alum, top with unfettered artichoke, Shake like dynamite, chug like a maniac.

I am thirsting for Daniella's next deliciously curative book.

Morning Yoga Workouts

Review Date: 2008-10-09
I've always liked the idea of doing yoga. It seems so serene. Over the years, I`ve tried doing yoga in a variety of different ways, all with the same unfortunate results. I start out very eager. I push myself to do the poses and find myself becoming competitive. Within two or three days, I've hurt myself and that's about the end of my attempt.

I got Morning Yoga Workout, hoping that this time might be different. Surprisingly it was. It's been two weeks and I've only missed one workout (on the third day). I feel pretty good.

Even though I am getting up earlier every morning to do my workout, it doesn't seem to be a big chore. I think it's because the author puts a great deal of emphasis on breathing. Therefore, instead of getting overwhelmed with worries that I might not be doing a pose quite right or moving to the harder positions before my body is ready, I simply focus on my breathing. It's pretty easy to get up and do a workout when you tell yourself that your sole purpose is to breathe. The book includes light, moderate, and intense15-20, 30-40, and 50-60 minute workouts for any fitness level and schedule.

This book offers several levels of energizing morning yoga routines. You can choose a shorter easier routine when running short on time or a longer more challenging one. It also allows a beginning student to progress through the levels at their own pace. The instructions are easy to follow and the accompanying photos further illustrate the point. Great for home practice or for teachers looking for some routines to energize their early morning classes.

This book is by far the best I have ever had. The directions are clear, right to the point. He is very clear about breathing and how it's all connected to the movement. My advice is the following: give yourself the time to read the instructions and then do the asana as described. What a concept! very very very good book!!!

I'd been looking for a simple, straight-forward yoga exercise book and I checked several out from my local library, including this one. Kurland's book was the clear winner. I regretted having to turn it back in and I'm definitely getting my own copy.

Pros:
+ Easy-to-follow directions with photographs - not too cluttered
+ Exercises are grouped into sets divided by intensity (light, moderate, intense) and workout length (15-20 min, 30-40 min, 60 min). This lets me choose day by day what I'd like to work on given the time and intensity.
+ Each set includes a variety of poses and exercises with a nice focus on balance and motion
+ Exercises do not rely on other equipment like mats, balls, or bolsters
+ Exercises do not need a lot of room or floor space
+ Book includes warm-up exercises that can be used before any type of exercise
+ Includes meditation exercises, too

Cons: I can't really think of a down side to this book. I have had previous in-class yoga experience, so I'm not sure how easy it is for an absolute beginner to grasp the concepts and to feel when a pose is correct.

Finally, despite the word "Morning" in the title, these exercises are perfect for any time. I'm not a morning person, so I perform these exercises when I get home from work - a nice way to recharge my batteries!

Chris Freytag has taken all of the complicated fitness and diet programs out there and traded them in for some common sense! She spells out things that ANYONE can do to improve their health and fitness and does it in a way that is not intimidating or too complex. Her exercise and diet ideas are so helpful (and not hard to do). This book taught me a lot about healthy eating habits and how your body responds to exercising. I highly recommend it!

Nothing very new - but she is knowledgable and motivating :-)

Chris Freytag knows her stuff. I have many of her workouts on dvd and so knowing how good of an instructor she is, I knew she'd have good stuff to say in her book. She does. She is well educated in health and she is certified by the American Council on Exercise. While she doesn't really add anything new to what we all already know, she does add insight to what she sees with her clients. She talks about their motivation or lack thereof and how to deal with all of that. Then she goes on to talk about ditching myths, excuses, building better body images, and then goes into the nitty gritty about diet and exercise.
It is a good read. It's choc full of information and hopefully enough motivation for people as they struggle with doing workouts and eating right.

Highly Recommend!

It seems it's always about 2:00 a.m. on a weekend that a family member suddenly awakens with a common ailment that nevertheless requires Dr. Mom to "do something" now! The "Complete Guide To Safe Herbs" provides indispensable knowledge needed to prepare for these times and others - what to have on hand, and then explains how to use the Creator's all natural "pharmacy."

Additionally, this marvelous volume provides descriptions of herbs, "Don't mix with," "Do take with," and "Keep in mind" comprehensive sections. There are "Herbs for special cases," "Buyer beware," "Drug-herb interactions" and potential interactions, plus a host of other types of hard-to-find but easily understood info, and all in one place! (Dr. Meletis has done the extensive research for us.) Of course, it also includes an essential, inclusive index.

Also importantly, the book's scientifically sound truths lay to rest some perhaps unsafe "old wives' tales" and factoids.

I treasure my gift copy of this gorgeous, impressive hardback. It is appropriate for the young as well as the young at heart. Lovely for display in any room, "Complete Guide To Safe Herbs" makes learning about herbs a joy!

With Allopathic medicine (regular medicine) proving to be miraculous in some situations. At the same time in other situations its proving to be too strong, too much and causing too many side effects. Welcome in herbal medicine as kind of a similar but more sensitive way to treat many of the same problems.

Welcome in a book like this which keeps it simple. Yes simple, yet has very valuable information about herbs and drug interactions and even talks about which herbs are safer than others. A fantastic book to have on hand if you are interested in the wonderful world of herbal medicine.

I'm so pleased to tell readers that this book was so pleasurable to read that I read it cover to cover the day it arrived. I started on an herb regiment four months ago (thanks to webmd.com), much to the dismay of my rheumatologist and cardiologist as I was already on fifteen prescription pills a day. With the help of the herbs I've been able to cut those pills in half. But I, too, was concerned about my ignorance as to the possible incompatibility of my newly found herbs with my doctor's advice and pills. Thanks to this book, we can all rest assured that I'm not messing with a dangerous mixture. Absolutely one hundred percent of my prescriptions were listed in the book and found to be safe with the herbs I'm now taking daily. The book is beautifully written with colorful pictures and easy-to cross-reference drugs, herbs, foods, etc. and their interactions with one another. At the end, a bonus that I had not expected: a long list of ailments offered to the reader who may have he or she's own agenda for wanting to try an alternative path to wellness. The mystery of these age-old remedies, that our ancestors probably used, is quickly unraveled in a written format simple enough for a child to understand. And, if I'm not mistaken, the author never once promised to cure cancer, etc. That would have been a giant signal to me that I was dealing with a quack. It is what it is, a guide to herbal usage. It's my new favorite book! P.S. Thank you to the previous on-line critics who lead me through the maze of self-help books to this very special one.

This is the quintessential canary handbook; easy to read and understand, filled with excellent photos and advice, with a good section on genetics if you should choose to breed these marvelous little birds. Vriends is a wonderful writer, well-organized on all the chapters in the aspects of canary breeding; his love of the birds comes through on every page. I have raised canaries for several years, and recommend this book to every person who has ever procured a bird from me---in fact, if they have not had a canary before, I always tell them to buy THIS book first, read it and THEN call me back. It is an invaluable resource tool.

Very clear. Covers feeding, housing, breeding, and genetics,as well as common diseases and household medicines that can be used to treat various conditions to which canaries are susceptible. However, an owner who does not want to breed might grow tired of the focus on breeding. Also, owners with canaries who were not handfed as babies may assume there is something wrong with their bird because the book discusses relatively tame handfed canaries and neglacts state that their tameness and willingness to be handled is not true of birds who were not hand fed. So be aware that if your bird does not like to be handled, this is normal. In fact, a non hand fed canary who does not struggle when caught may be ill. One final note: Information and medicating are fine, but misdiagnosis can occur,so it is good to also be have the name of a vet.

Great book!...Everything you need to know about canaries!

I recently started weightlifing as my primary sport. In the past, I had only strength trained as part of a conditioning regimen for other sports (basketball, rowing, volleyball). At age 35, I decided to start working out again, with the focus on my shape and muscle size and tone. Of all the books I looked at to start my workout regime with, I chose this one. Dr. Vedral covers all of the angles -- diet, motivation, what exercises to do, how to do them (with pictures!), how to do them at home or at the gym, how often to do them, and when to fit in your cardio workouts. It is clear that she knows her stuff, and from her photos, it works. I also have Dr. Vedral's 12-minute workout, which I had pretty good results with. My goal - to look as good as Dr. Vedral! (I have a ways to go....)

I was looking for a program that requires only dumb-bells, but this one uses dumb-bells, bar-bells, a few kinds of benches, and other equipment. Since I don't have a home gym or access to a commercial gym, this book has not been useful for me. But it looks very good for someone who has the proper equipment and wants to use very heavy weights.

Also one of the first book I added to my now extensive collection of strength training/ body-building/ weight lifting/ fitness references. She is a very inspiring author and the before and after photos (especially of herself) are worth a thousand words. I have changed my weight lifting routine countless times over the past 14 years and this routine is by far the one I use most. It gives proven results and keeps me from "plateauing".

I believe those who would enjoy it most are those who are ready for training that packs a wallop! I thought I was fairly strong (for a middle-aged female) before I started on this weight training program. I was surprised at the increase in strength this program gave me. I now use fairly heavy weights (no I can't quite bench press my weight...YET!), but it keeps the compliments coming. What a great feeling to have total strangers comment on your great (and still feminine) muscles and ask you WHERE you work out (not DO you work out?)! This book really kicks up muscle tone and strength by leaps and bounds! You just need to make the time commitment to do this for yourself.

If you would rather not work with somewhat heavier weights, Joyce Vedral's "Bottom's Up" and "Definition" books would be a better bet.

As much as people dont think that nutrition is important to the serious athlete, they are wrong. One of the keys unlocking your potential is what you put into your body. Before i had read this book, i had a few ideas/thoeries about what i put into my body and what foods i should eat and this book backed my ideas and gave me new ones. This book is one of my favorites, and serious athletes should follow it to a T.

Best book I've read for the "semi serious" athlete. Although I don't compete anymore, I'm 74, I thought the info. for nourishing food and meals very helpful to me . Also,I never realized that hydrating after exercise was also important.

Dan Benardot's book 'Nutrition for Serious Athletes' is a must for the coach or athltete who desires to cover every base when it comes to athletic performance. Fundamental topics discussed include proper nutrition, hydration, supplements, timming of meals, good diets/bad diets, and sport specific diets. But what also adds to the immense value of Dan Benardot's book is the excellant index of meal plans, and nutritional values of foods.

What is of great importance in gaining knowledge is the issue of authority. It is something that is very important to me, for there are many individuals who claim to actually know something about athletic performance, yet they lack proper training and education. It is clear that Dan Benardot is not one of those individuals. Not only does he have PhD and RD distinction, but the text is also clear, logical, insightful and based on scientific evidence.

Dr. Benardot's text, Nutrition for Serious Athletes, is essential for both coach and athlete. It lays out in clear and precise fashion what is required, with regard to nurtition, for athletic success. Crucial topics, for athletic success, that are comprehensively discussed include: proper nutrition, hydration, supplements, meals for anaerobic and aerobic activities, and timing of meals. What also adds to the immense value of the text is the massive index of food sources of essential nutrients located at the end of the book. If you want to achieve your best athletic results, i.e., to maximize and actualize your true athletic potential, then this text is for you. It will not only show you how to fuel your body for the particular athletic you are training for and competing in, but also help you to understand why you should be fueling your body in that particular maner. All in all, this is an excellant text for the athlete, coach, or even the individual who just wants to have a clear understanding of proper nutrition.

One Bowl: A Guide to Eating for Body and Spirit is interesting and inspirational. In reality, it is very difficult to follow.

Start with one meal per day: No mindless, emotional, frantic shoveling of food into your face. Eat what calls to you, eat with attention, and you will be satisfied. Take the time to appreciate what you put into your body: the flavors, textures, and nourishment. I searched for my "one bowl" [...]

This was an interesting book. The premise is that by eating all meals in a mindful manner, while holding the bowl in your hand and eating alone, you will transform not only your food intake, but other areas of your life. I think that there are many lessons that can be taken from this book, especially for those attempting to eat more intuitively and live life with more consciousness. I don't see being able to adopt the one-bowl method as a lifestyle unless you live alone or have a family who does not mind doing the same. Many of the books that the author recommends for further reading have been out of print (he acknowledges this in the book) since the 70s. This whole book just kept reminding me of something that might have come out of the Esalen Institute in the 60s.

So, will this totally work for the majority of people living in modern society in the new millenium? Probably not. Can you get some good ideas and find exercises that might help you on your journey to more mindful living? Yes, I think so. It's definitely worth reading.

I second hal's review - i had this book when it came out in the 70's. Don't know how it got away from me - probably loaned it to someone. But I've followed its advice, loosely, over the years and through 3 or 4 treasured bowls that got chipped, cracked, or whatever, and replaced. Now and then I've told people about it - "...there was this book, called One Bowl....". today it occurred to me to check Amazon to see if it's still available, and, Yay! It is! Into the ol' cart!
PS - my current bowl is an Oxo - Amazon carries them in Kitchen. White plastic doesn't have the ambience of raku, but I'm not one who looks down on plastic - matter of fact I'm grateful for it! As with everything, if you want it to have nice vibes, GIVE it some!

Excellent method with philosophical and spiritual overtones to assist you to gain perspective and "control" of your eating and your entire point of view about food and meal times.

Well done.
