Most "low-fat" or "Healthy" recipes seem to be gummy, tasteless, or taste like animal feed. These muffins, scones, and other goodies are actually worth the trouble of baking and eating. And it's nice to have some decent-tasting desserts to serve when my vegan or diabetic friends visit.

What a treat! I'll admit, I was skeptical but wow, after the first recipe, my friends asked for more. I thought the stuff would be bland or dry or just not taste like the real thing but these recipes are the real thing and your waistline won't know the difference cause there isn't any! Thanks Krystine!

I have only tried three of the recipies, and they were excellent. I have only been a "chef" for a few years, but I consider myself an old pro at desserts and these were beautiful.

I read the recent review by booklist and agree with some of their thoughts. Although I must add some of the authors ideas are extremely innovative, especially when it comes to the recipes calling for tofu. I was amazed how wonderful these desserts tasted. When it came to the aspartame I myself had some difficulty with it but after a couple tries I found there is a technique that cannot be deviated from. I'm happy to say that my sugar-free pumpkin pie turned out terrific! I found the recipes not intimidating, very simple to understand. It's a definite must. I have no doubt it will become a classic.

The book was slow for me at the beginning because I've always hated science. There was a great deal of thorough explanations about how our bodies function and what functions indicate that something is quite wrong. Because of the scientific info which I usually avoid, I continued reading the book until every piece of information filtered in. I have a Dominican culture where the food diet is very heavy starting with breakfast, midafternoon lunch and evening; So it's interesting to learn what NOT to eat, and/or what eat to make our bodies function properly, and simultaneously loose weight without starving to death. And the best about the book were the recipes suggested as samples at the end of the book! I was so used to heavy meals that I couldn't figure out how to make it lighter. The book helped until I got used to it.

My email address is jaime@warwick.com and/or jaimeisaac@sprintmail.com, please reply if this book is available in English because I've been recommending it and most of my friends are not Spanish.

The book that changed my life

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS BOOK IS THE SPANISH TRANSLATION VERSION OF FIT FOR LIFE.

I started on this diet 18 months ago and boy, what a difference.

I am sharper, brighter, more alive, better at my work, more energetic, can eat as much as I like, suffer no ill health or pain and discomfort...I could go on all day but I think you get the idea. This book is not a diet fad, it is a life changer.

You may think that a book talking about fresh fruit and vegetables, air, water, sunshine and exercise is just common sense. Well you would be right, it is. Unfortunately with all the different opinions we receive from health advisers and food companies it is easy to get confused about what we should eat.

I would suggest trying this diet for 10 days and see how you feel. I suspect you will notice an improvement in well being very quickly and any way the money you spend on the book will be paid back by a lower grocery bill (fresh produce is cheaper than cooked or processed). What have you got to lose?

Well done Harvey and Marilyn Diamond for speaking the truth, and thank you.

As soon as I started reading I put in effect all the knowledge acquired in the book. I immediately noticed how my body reacted in a very positive way.

This book is an incredible amount of knowledge for all people of all ages with sufficient conscience to start a new way of eating, not dieting!

Simply you don't need another book on diets and antidiets in fact. This books tells you all about your "system". I personally think that the human body is a nice machine, the only problem is that comes without manuals. This book is the digestive aparatus "manual", it simply changed my life. Now I'm not fully vegetarian, but I learned to eat well, and practically forgot what means stomach problems. A must read book if you have enough will force to order your eating habits.

The way the author takes you in simple to follow steps, you feel as if he is sitting in front of you telling you how you can really do it.
Both my self and my elder daughter worked on his “system” and within two weeks I lost 16 pounds while she lost 22 pounds. Amazing!
It is the Best health book I’ve read so far, Kudos to Mr Mazen.

most amusing fashion read I've ever found
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-22
Too many authors of fashion/costume history get really stuffy, even pedantic in their published expertise. This is not that kind of author - she presents in a conversational format historical facts, quotes, a general timeline, and many reprinted photos, drawings and paintings showing fashion or something interesting to do with our favorite topic. Since it's written more like Vogue than any textbook, it's easier to digest and remember, and wholly entertaining at the same time. After all, what is fashion history but a record of the everyday clothes people wore during their lifetime, the same way we look at our bluejeans. This source of endless fashion trivia was a surprise gift from a friend and has become one of my favorite rainy day reads. And there's something for everyone: clothing colors of Egypt - the popular and the magical (p. 50), a medieval recipe for toothpaste (p. 138), a credit for the first owner of black satin sheets in the 1570's (p.177), Madame de Pompadour's deathbed act of cosmetic vanity (p. 227), the origin of men's trouser cuffs (p. 273), several references to fashions inspired by the silver screen (p. 348), the Edwardian revival of the early 1970's (p. 392), and a zillion more bits of tid. You'll find yourself saying "hmmm! never knew that!" pretty darn often. This book provides justification for saying "everything old becomes new again" and a fun perspective on constantly changing fashion through the ages. Especially appropriate for younger readers who couldn't make it through a textbook approach to clothing, or for those of us who like to read in bed without dozing off. Keep an eye out for this volume and snap up as many copies as you ever find.

This is it; The Book, the one that made me fall in love with the history of clothing and fashion. You have to take everything with a grain of salt, but the easy-to-approach format with the pages divided into `articles' sort of like a newsletter, the fun graphics, and interesting historical tie-ins make this one of my favorite fashion history books. If you're looking for an in-depth historical study this is NOT for you. However, if you are looking for a fun, irreverent frolic through the togas, doublets, and surplices of times past pick up a copy of this when you find it, it's well worth it.

Why do people wear what they wear? This book tells all! Did blondes have more fun in Ancient Rome? In 40 A.D. laws were passed requiring Roman prostitutes to dye their hair blonde. Ever wonder what the Gauls wore into battle? They died their mustaches blue, put on their horned helmets and went off to war stark naked from the neck down! Why did LOuis XIV make high heels and stockings an essential for the well-dressed man? (He wanted to show off his great legs!) This book is a riot... buy it!

This book is extremely humorous, and yet informative.

40,000 Years of Fashion: Let There Be Clothes is one of the most humorous costuming books it has been my pleasure to read. It is a campy romp through the history of fashion from the prehistoric fur bikini to the hottest and hippest of the retro 90's. 40,000 years is not to be used as a serious research book, but it's fantastic for the vintage fashion enthusiast that is looking for the short take on a long subject. Fashion tips and social quips relevant to each century gives this book its charm

Light On Yoga is my favorite book on yoga! With today's many Western teaching modalities and variety of teaching styles, it is nice to come back to the this book and review the traditional alignment for the many different asana's in yoga.
This truly is a reference book with in- depth description of the pose's along with photos of Iyengar demonstrating each asana.

As a yoga practitioner and teacher, this book has been a wonderful companion for many years. It would be very unusual indeed for a teacher to have either not heard of or own this book. The serious student would benefit from owning a copy also but for people new to yoga or who have physical restrictions, they may be better off looking at what people call "Therapeutic Yoga" these days. Hatha Yoga has always been a therapeutic discipline for over 5000 years but today we have the advantage of looking for specific areas that focus on a particular bias. Everyone should have the opportunity of learning how to master the mind-body complex. Camella Nair RYT author of "Aqua Kriya Yoga"

This is the book for anyone who takes asanas seriously. There are so many variations and each asana properly explained.
If all you want is 1 yoga book, this is the book.
Note that this is Iyengar style yoga focusing on detailed alignment.
It is impossible for anyone to improve on this book as far as Iyengar yoga is concerned.

Fabulous book - a must for all levels of yoga practitioner!

This book has a wealth of information for any practitioner of yoga, from beginner to advanced. The content is concise and practical, and the poses are sequenced in a way that allows for a gradual and safe progression in the practice. There are also dozens of practice sequences given for both improvement and how to treat common ailments through yoga. The introduction is especially valuable, as it offers a no fluff in-depth commentary on the philosophical thought behind the asana practice. I pick it up again and again and am still referring to it after nearly 15 years of owing it. My copy is dog eared and loved, and was well worth every penny.

An earlier reviewer mentioned that the photos and layout were not user friendly, and only gave the book two stars, which is a shame. This book was first printed in the mid 1960's - over 40 years ago! It was the first yoga book of it's kind to ever be printed, and it's content is timeless and as relevant today as ever. Mr. Iyengar even had to struggle with his then publisher to be allowed to include so many photos, as it was so expensive in those days to print such a book. I say hats off to the man who brought yoga to the west long before it was ready. He's a pioneer and a virtuoso of his craft, and his marvelous work should never be over overlooked just because it doesn't come in some glossy package fit for the masses.

One of the most complete books on asanas. And B. K. S. Iyengar don't just show you the picture. He goes on with explanations, benefits, variations, sequences, etc. If you are a serious practioner of asanas, this is the best and most complete reference. It goes well beyond what your asana hatha yoga teacher can do. For me, I find it a good reading to expand my knowledge on asanas, especially when I want to find something new to challenge my body. there is always something in this book that I cannot do yet, may be forever! This book is not intented to be a textbook on yoga, though. If you are beginner and don't intent to challenge your body too much, then this book may not be what you want. Try taking classes, and have a books such as " Yoga: The Iyengar Way" by Silva Mehta instead.

I am personally interested in asanas, but not so much as in doing all of the feats here. It all depends on why you want to do yoga. Don't forget that asana is only a small part (one of the eight limbs) of yoga. Even if you do asana with a meditative mind, you still miss what deep meditation can offer¯peace, health, a focused mind, and eventually bliss. And don't forget pranayama too. This book does contain some basic instruction on pranayama. But it's not comprehensive. And some long-time practioners of the Iyengar pranayama have reported undesirable side effects.

For a comprehensive and effective, non-sectarian approach to meditation and other advanced techniques in yoga, try Advanced Yoga Practices: Easy Lessons for Ecstatic Living by Yogani. Supplementing Iyengar yoga with these missing pieces will give you the best techniques you have for your body, mind and spirit.

I am a personal growth coach who is educated in biology, biochemistry, biofeedback and psychology. I give workshops on stress management, coach executives on this topic and also do workhshops that combine these techniques with biofeedback. This gives you some background on me and my perspective that I'm writing this review from.

As someone who works with these techniques and sees the results via biofeedback with myself and others, I highly recommend this very inexpensive book as a brief overview and introduction to the topic. The author covers a lot of ground in a small space and the instructions are clear and simple.

If you practice these exercises as they are explained, they will cause effects in your physiology. Regulation of the breath is very tied to the nervous system and to heart rate variability which correlates with resilience. If you buy this book and get serious about a practice, I would pick up some additional material to augment this text such as the SCIENCE OF BREATH and THE LIGHT ON PRANAYAMA. The first of these is a more Western explanation by a respected yoga institute and the second is a classic text with a lot of detail.

I also highly recommend getting a home biofeedback program such as FreezeFramer or Healing Rhythms. You can read the descriptions of each and determine what is best for your needs. However, this additional step will really heighten your awareness and help you to develop more control over your internal states.

Excellent.

Instead of wasting money on Iyengar's books, this is safer, simple way of doing PRANAYAMA. This book is worth it's weight in gold.

Alternet Nostril Breathing is the best for weight loss, however Ujjaini works, too, but little slowly.

Following are two techniques:
Alternate Nostril Breathing
(Anulom Vilom Pranayama with no breath retention) This pranayama (control breathing) is done with alternate breathing from the left and right nostrils for cleansing of Nadis. (energy meridians). Seated in a convenient posture, start off with slow inhalation from the left nostril first by closing the right nostril with the middle of right hand thumb ,and after fully filling the lungs, (not the belly breathing) breathe out slowly from the right nostril by closing the left nostril with the two ( left hand middle and ring) fingers. Now breathe in from the right nostril by closing the left nostril in the above manner and exhale from the left nostril by closing the right nostril with the right thumb. It completes one cycle. Do this for three minutes for two months then gradually increase to 5 minutes.

Do it two hour after eating or drinking. (Do it on empty-stomach) Do not eat for 15 minute after you are done. Better to lie down for five minutes after you are done. If you limit practice to maximum of five minutes, it will be the best.

The very first sign you will experience is lightness in the body and clearer thinking.

The practice of this breathing for a period of three to four months can open up thirty to forty percent of the heart arteries' blockages. This pranayama alleviates all the diseases of the body, leads to the state of joy, enthusiasm for living , fearlessness, peace of mind and deep meditation.

Benefits:
-Hair will regrow within two months of practice.
-Body will go to it's ideal weight by itself.
-Face becomes bright and luminous.
-Lost vision will return.
-Removes fear/anxiety of any kind.
- Aligns both hemisphere of the brain for full brain functionality
- Creates a deeper sense of well-being and harmony
- Helps alleviate migraines and headaches and frazzled states of being
- Works great in situations where you find yourself anxious, board and need grounding
-Blockages in the arteries of the heart are removed and the arteries become clean, making circulation unimpeded.

Ujjayi Pranayama

1. You can do this sitting, standing or walking anywhere anytime.

2. Inhale slowly through both nostrils, keeping the throat slightly constricted so as to make a gentle sound that will help you to feel the breath in the throat. The sound will remind you of ocean waves washing up the beach. Concentrate on the feeling of the breath moving in and out through the throat.

3. During inhalation do not allow abdomen to bulge out, let the chest expand.

4. After completing inhalation slowly exhale. (Either by both nostrils or by left nostril) During exhalation chest should go inside and abdomen should remain steady.

Remember :-

1. While doing Ujjiayi air should touch the throat.

2. Breath must be mentally locked in chest area. (Do not do belly breathing)

3. After practicing it for few days, knowing your limitations, keep the ratio between inhalation and exhalation 1 : 2.

4. In easy Ujjiayi Pranayama, inhalation and exhalation can be practiced by both the nostrils.

Benefits:
This simple practice has a subtle influence on the whole body. It calms the mind and has a soothing effect on the nervous system. Ujjayi is very useful for people with high blood pressure as it slows down the heartbeat. It has subtle effects on the flow of life force in the astral (energy) body and helps you to be aware of its movement within the sushumna (astral spine).

This little book is an excellent guide for yoga breathing. You don't have to dig through long texts (although interesting as well) about eastern life philosophy and can get straight to work. Several breathing techniques are explained in a couple of pages each and categorized per purpose, e.g. concentration, energy etc. definitely recommendable, especially when you're `a starter' and just want to experience some techniques.

I purchased this book because this is a subject that is very close to me. The premise of the book (a food addict attends a clinic to help her understand her food addiction) was of great interest to me.

The use of food addict was also something that drew me to this book, as I have believed for a long time that there is such a thing.

This book does not disappoint. The author is very honest in her detailing of her experiences. From the beginning when she felt that this clinic stay was of no use to her, we can feel the pain she was in. The story simply gets more fascinating (and candid) as the author reveals herself more and more. In the end, you are cheering her on.

I have found this book to be extremely helpful in looking at the whole body image, wellness issue in a totally different view. If you are hoping for a quick fix, this would not be the book for you.

But if you believe that you can achieve wellness by better understanding your body and mind, this is the book for you.
Excellent purchase!

For anyone concerned about an older parent

This book is written for anyone concerned about an older parent, grandparent or other older adult who has a problem with alcohol or mood-altering medications. It is the only book I've found that covers this topic so completely and, not only does it explain the problem clearly, it offers practical steps to help the older person get the right kind of help and live out the rest of their golden years sober -- able to, once again, enjoy family, grandchildren and friends. Best insight: many of the things attributed to aging can be a result of addiction. With sobriety, many or all of the problems go away.

This book gave me what I'd been searching for -- a guide to help my 67 year old mother who has a serious alcohol problem. She didn't remember conversations, slurred her words, had falls during the night, had bruises on her face and arms, ate poorly, isolated from us and her friends, and refused to see a doctor. I slowly watched my wonderful mother change before my eyes. I couldn't even trust her to babysit her grandchildren. This book not only gave me the information I needed, but helped get my reluctant brother and sister to finally agree to get our mother help. I give this book my wholehearted endorsement and recommend it to anyone worried about an older parent who has an alcohol problem. I haven't found any other book like it.

I thought this book showed the seriousness of the disease of food addiction. I appreciate Debbie's honesty and willingness to share with us all just how cunning, baffling and powerful food addiction is. Food addiction is real! I appreciate those who are willing to share the pain and misery and most important the recovery aspect of food addiction.

A very unique book!

Not a quick fix

This book has got to be the best I've ever read on the topic of weight loss. It addresses the actual issues behind being over weight, treating the over weight as a symptom of deeper issues. Beware, its not for any one that is looking for a quick fix, but it is the only book I've ever read (and I've read many!) that can actually offer a long term solution. Probably more for the person who has done many diets and is ready to consider the root of the problem. Its very exciting and gives real hope for an over haul on your entire life.

Absolutely fantastic, having been fat and having tried all of the fad diets, I'm relating to every word, relationships, respect, clothes, self worth, virtually every word applies. It's almost like the book was written to 'boost' me at this exact time in my life, I will keep losing weight, my epiphany was clear, the paradigm's have shifted, and I've run in to some resistance from society, not that they wanted me heavy, but the new energy level is not always going over too well. I'm down 66 pounds. Health, energy, everything about size and self worth is improved.

I am a 40 year old male who has been using (what I have always called) the "Journal" method for the past 12 years - something I thought I had "invented" myself. The secret is having the Journal (writing down such things as "had a "quarter-pound bag" of jelly beans" etc. was, for me, more than I could bear!). Self discipline is essential. Anyone who is disciplined and who uses a Journal FAITHFULLY, Will succeed. When I would contemplate a chocolate bar, and then remember that, later, I would have to enter that in my diary, it just was not worth the effort for me to eat, and then write it down. At 40, I am in better physical shape than ever in my life. The Journal and Self Control ... it does work.

I love it and to my astonishment it is so truth and real. As I was reading this I thought of various ocassions that I went into our cafeteria here at work and saw skinny people getting anything they wanted on the menus and I thought "Why can't I eat everything like they do and still look great", but then I went off getting my soups and salads and other "healthy" items. It's like finding a light bulb that was in me turn bright and shiny, but throughout all this time It was just off. Yesterday I thought "this is easy" but even this morning I had a difficult time starting out the day and rating my hunger between 1 and 10. To my amazement I found out that it is not as easy as I thought because first of all I have no concept of this feeling (the hunger and full levels). But everyday I will 1)think of 3 agreements and try to keep them 2)Be active for 20 minutes and watch my pulse rate 3)rate my hunger from 1-10 4)Take 10 minutes each day to relax and destress my self. I feel that a new me just arose and for the first time I was yielded in the right direction. Thank you.

Very thought provoking. No magic fixes or 'secret formulas' -- just getting to the root of the matter within. I liked the question about "Would a thin person eat that?" Of course, they would! The big difference is "Would a thin person eat this NOW, and THIS MUCH!" Honest answers will product honest results. I was sitting across from a thin co-worker at a company outing when a package of big cookies was passed our way. My old paradigm said "They are free, they taste good, everyone is alloted at least one etc." So,I took one. My thin co-worker said "No thanks, I'm good." After all, we had just finished lunch. THAT'S the difference......

There is so much valuable, pragmatic and helpful information in this book! The woefully underestimated value of listening, the best way to handle a patient complaint, creating a "patient -friendly" environment. It's all here...presented in an engaging, well organized and insightful manner. Satisfying patients goes far beyond taking surveys. I recommend this book to all my clients!

Susan Keane Baker has so much knowledge in this important area of health care and she shares with us her many insights and suggestions in an interesting, easy-to-read manner. This is definitely a book for all health care professionals and executives to keep on a nearby shelf as a ready reference over the years. Susan covers so many topics that are essential for patient retention, such as anticipating patient needs and preferences and making sure that patient complaints are dealt with in a timely and caring manner. As a longtime consultant in patient communication myself, I can testify that my colleague Susan has done a superb job with this book. Its all there - which makes this 5 stars for sure. It's easy to see why this book is a top seller!

This book offers practical information and advice on dealing with individuals in a healthcare setting. It is an excellent tool for the direct healthcare provider, as well as for those working behind the scenes. Reading this book reminded me of why I entered the healthcare profession in the first place - to make a difference. I think this book will also have great appeal to the patient who wants to be more knowledgeable about his/her healthcare and what to look for in a physician/patient relationship. Healthcare providers who pay attention to service excellence are destined for future success, and the information in this book will help you attain it!

I bought this book after Press Ganey recommended it in their October 1999 client advisory newsletter. It's full of practical ideas that anyone working in a health care setting can use. Excellent!
