This is one of the books you'll read and then you put it somewhere where you can easily pick it up again and browse in it, to remind you of the many "do nothings".
There's one exercise that personally helped and still helps me a lot: when showering try to not think of anything else but cleansing your body. While I still rarely manage to not think of anything while showering, I am now restricting myself to positive and creative thoughts only and it WORKS :) The good ideas are coming!
The little book is full of energizing ideas, presented in a new, fun, appealing way. And now I am off to browse in it again...

There are 10 do-nothing exercises to calm you down quickly plus darling comments and quotes.

Actually they're not exactly do-nothing they're more rethink yourself to calm down, be happier and enjoy whatever you're doing or do the best at looking foward to what you want to do next.

Do nothing - zip - nothing - nada. Yes, often the key to changing your life isn't in doing more, more, more...but doing absolutely nothing but appreciating life. So don't just stand there and do nothing. Read this book...and start really doing nothing! (from the back of the book).

Remember I have just found out I have cancer on my lip and it has to be removed and find out if it's spread - there is NOTHING that is more important than enjoying your life while you can!

WOW! Buy this book NOW!

I've always been interested in meditation and mindfulness. This book was a great tool to get me motivated to practice mindfulness/meditation on a daily basis...and it was easy to read and understand...explaining the benefits for mind, body, spirit...and giving realistic exercises to incorporate easily into your life! I recommend this book not only as a self purchase ...but as a great gift to give a friend who's been complaining about being stressed out. It's terrific!

This book is a quick read and reread. The authour mixes up the presentation of the book. It is simple and basic, easy to understand and do. The author not only tells you why doing nothing works but tells you how to do it. Alot of books I have read leave that part out. The author doesn't speak down to you either.

I bought another copy for a friend and am considering future purchases for other friends. Well worth the money. I have also purchased 2 of her other books after having read them in the bookstore.

Good luck doing nothing.

I was given this book after my wife and I had our first son. We read this book from front to back and still use it as a reference. By using what we read, our son doesn't enjoy a lot of processed foods, but loves to eat fruits and even vegetables! This is quite a change from my sister-in-law's kids who love chicken nuggest and MacDonalds. Also, because we have changed the diet for our son, my wife and I have found ourselves eating better. If you have friends or family with children, or who are expecting, I highly recommend this book for them.

The book is a terrific guide and reference source for nutrition and creating healthy eating habits. It spans a child's needs from birth to adolescence. The sections on Environmental Bad Guys and the Antioxidant Good Guys are very informative yet not overbearing with scientific terms. It is so important to create healthy lifestyle for children and this book does it by teaching you the parent the fundamentals.

A MUST for every parent

I bought this book shortly after the birth of my daughter, now 15 months old. My family has a history of weight & heart problems and I wanted to break this cycle. I don't want my daughter to face these issues as an adult. I read this book from cover to cover and continue to refer to it on a regular basis. My daughter doesn't eat sugar or processed foods. My family & friends can't get over the fact that she eats tofu, fruits & vegetables. They can't understand why their kids won't. As a result of establishing a diet for my daughter, my husband & I have had to make changes ourselves. My daughter is extremely healthy & happy. I have learned so much about the benefits of organic foods & a diet rich in fruits & vegetables. You'll also be amazed at what kids DON'T need in their diets (hot dogs, chicken nuggets, chips, soda!) I buy this book for all my friends that are expecting. If you truly want to give your child a gift, give them the gift of good health. This book will guide you, simply & thoroughly, in that process. I know my daughter has gotten a healthy start in life because I've applied this information to our lives.

How to Get Well

This is not one of the regular "health books" which flood the current book market. It is the first practical, authoritative manual on proven and effective drugless treatments for our most common ailments. Never before has such an incredible amount of vital, reliable and useful information on the drugless approach to health and disease been assembled in one volume. A complete program of treatment for all the major diseases and ailments is outlined in detail - including diets, specific vitamins and supplements.

Leading experts on nutritional and biological medicine, notably Alan H. Nittler, M.D., H. Rudolph Alsleben, M.D., and Barnet G. Meltzer, M.D., have collaborated with the author in reviewing and determining the most effective nutrional and biological treatments for each ailment.

Her's what Dr. H. Rudolph Alsleben, M.D., writes about this book:

"Your book is sensational! I'm impressed with the way in which you conceived and constructed it, with your fabulous and expert presentation of the philosophy of biological medicine, and with the common and academic sense it makes... There are but few informed and courageous leaders who have not only dedicated their lives to helping their fellow men, but who have the sufficient knowledge and qualifications to accomplish this. I am proud to tell you that I feel you to be one of those few. By writing this book, you rendered a great service to a disease-ridden mankind."

How To Get Well is destined to become the most treasured and used reference manual not only for doctors, nutritionists and researchers, but for all those who are earnestly seeking information leading to better health.

This easy to read book has got an amazing amount of very practical information. It's written in such a manner that you can easily find an ailment with it's corresponding therapeutic program (specific foods, supplements, herbs etc.) Dr. Airola also gives in my opinion the best lacto-vegetarian diet around. I've never been ill and feel great every single day since implementing this diet and his other health-boosting recommendations in my life. Bluntly said, this book covers everything you need to know to get healthy or get healing - the natural way.

In a time when one mostly sees the popular books written by armchair herbalists and sycophantic ND's, I found seeing Dr. Airola's book still in print a distinct pleasure. Dr. Airola not only writes and presents the material well, but he also transmits a charm and a positiveness that is healing in and of its own self. Dr. Airola practiced what he preached--what is in his books are the results of his clinical experience. No Bravo Sierra here.

I'll offer my testimomial here. What is in his book worked for me and worked in three weeks. The M.D.'s failed after three years. The experience moved me enough to study natural medicine in depth to the practitioner level. Dr. Airola's book were the first textbooks. Despite being layman's books, they are chocked full of knowledge.

Should you use this book, be prepared to juice. You need to either grow your own herbs or find good sources since the capsuled stuff in healthfood stores is garbage.

In this book, you will see a diet that is the progenitor of the some of the more recent popular diets, except that Airola's worked and has stood the test of time. The treatments for specific disease are complete, comprehensible, and usually on one or two pages.

One of the beauties of this book is that one who knows nothing of natural healing can take this book and get started right away to heal themselves, gain a strong backbone into natural healing, and turn their live's around.

To the negative, there is no information given on how to make herbal preparations. There is more to herbalism than eating a weed and Dr. Airola just gave the principle herbs for a specific treatment. In most cases, that would fine, however I suggest a good herbal or a practicing herbalist who makes their own brews to help in the preparation.

This book is an excellent first book for the prospective student of natural medicine (or biological medicine as Dr. Airola called it). It would be my first choice if one asked me for a guide to curing themselves, and it should be found to be an indespensible addition to one's library. It is the only book I loan to people and I have been through 3 copies as it gets worn out and stained over time.

About 10 years ago, I became very sick and thought I was going to die. I took several diagnostic tests which came out negative. So I decided that I will help myself and did some research. By some stroke of luck or miracle, I received a brochure of this book in the mail so being desperate, I bought it and tried what was suggested for my symptoms. Well, I did get back to health. My symptoms disappeared. Thanks a million Dr. Wagner. I think I will buy another copy of this book since mine has become very worn out due to use.

I purchased "How To Stay Out of the Doctor's Office" several years ago, and I am convinced the book has saved me thousands of dollars in medical bills. Wagner's book helps you to diagnose common physical ailments, and he gives natural solutions for healing. He gives precise descriptions of problems like kidney stones, gallstones, high blood pressure, cholesterol control, thyroid problems, multiple sclerosis, gout, tinnitis, yeast infections, ulcers, and diabetes. I have read some sections of his book several times, and I am convinced that I have avoided/cured gallstones, kidney stones, gout, and ulcers by following his advice. I highly recommend this book to everyone. (jsoverton@excite.com)

Three years ago I read "How to Stay Out of the Doctor's Office" and was so impressed with it that I contacted the publisher to find out where Dr. Wagner was located. Several days later he called me directly and asked how he could be of help. Since then Dr. Wagner has become our family doctor, and we have come to appreciate his straightforwardness in telling his patients to ask questions, to become educated in making informed decisions, and finally, to "take control" of their own health. I keep his book with me at all times and treat it as my "medical bible". Each chapter is extremely informative and I have used many of them to help family and friends with common sense solutions to their medical problems. Easy to read, its format offers the layperson a basic understanding of his/her ailment, what causes it, the conventional treatment, problems associated with that treatment, and then a "no nonsense" approach to alternative remedies that include a good nutritional program, vitamin and supplement support, amino acids, herbs, adjunctive remedies, and exercise regimens. Dr. Wagner is located in Philadelphia, PA. He has a radio program, "The Dr. Wagner Health Show" which airs on Tuesday and Thursday at 2:00 p.m. on 1540am. He has written another book, "How to Stay Out of the Hospital" which addresses the problems of orthodox medicine and offers many case histories. With Dr. Wagner's permission, I am including his office number for those readers who need to contact him: (215) 455-0717.

An excellent consumer guide on how to use medical services.
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-25
This is a good manual about the medical establishment written by an insider, Pamela Gallin, M.D. First, she describes in detail how the medical world works. Second, she tells you how to obtain the best medical care.

The medical profession is organized around teams. The teams are hospitals or medical centers. There are three leagues. At the top are hospitals providing tertiary care. These represent the best city hospitals. They deliver the widest array of specialized medicine services. Their specialists are often among the leading authorities. If you have a complex medical condition that is where you should go. Next are hospitals providing secondary care. They have very good resources but for the rare diseases mentioned above. Finally, you get hospitals providing primary care. These are good for mundane conditions only. For others, they will refer you to the nearest hospital that delivers secondary or tertiary care.

The medical profession has a military like hierarchy. At the bottom are several ranks of nurses. Above them are many ranks of doctors with different level of experience and specialization. There are also hospital administrators who are doctors who got promoted upstairs into managerial roles.

There is a key defense line among doctors that consist of the radiologist, anesthiologist, and pathologist. The author calls them the invisible doctors because they have no patient contact. But, their work is key. The radiologist gives others the broad road map of a disease by interpreting X-Rays. After reading the chapter about the anesthiologists you appreciate their importance. If a surgeon makes a mistake, you are typically ok. If an anesthiologist does, your dead! The pathologist is the true scientist who analyze the disease at the cellular level. He is the one that advise the surgeon if he has cut enough cancerous tissue. These three "invisible" doctors, together are more important than the surgeon.

The main advice the author gives regarding how to get the best care is original. The most important issue is to select the best hospital or medical center. The best hospital will have the best team of doctors, including the key invisible ones mentioned above. Only then, should you focus on choosing a primary doctor. And, she gives good advice on how to select both a hospital and a doctor.

My only issue with the book is that we often can't choose a hospital as she suggests. Employer sponsored health insurance (HMO/PPO) restricts you to a given hospital. Yet, her advice kicks in when you are referred to a hospital outside of the HMO/PPO network. Overall, this is still an excellent insider's view on a hermetic profession.

A must for one and all

Dr. Gallin has created a tool for everyone to be able to navigate the medical system. I wish that I had read this book before my recent foot injury as I would have known how to better handle my medical care. In fact at the time of injury, I didn't know what to do when I injured myself. Since I didn't know that I was allowed to make choices on my behalf or choose specific doctors I wound up getting inferior care.

The best part about this book is the simplicity whith which complicated matters are explained. The infusion of real world examples not only exemplifies the topic that is being described, but also allows you to grasp how situations that are not properly monitered can go wrong. You know that if this can happen to a doctor or someone in their family, it can happen to anyone. I got this book from a friend and feel that the future of my health is better and safer for having read this as I will know what to do when there is a problem.

This book is a must for one and all!

This clearly written book has helped me in many ways. I never realized the importance of choosing the hospital first and then choosing your doctors from one center. Dr. Gallin made me understand how important that can be if you need to be hospitalized. I also came to appreciate the value of second opinions and understand that this is not a slight to doctors.
I feel better prepared to navigate the medical system as a result of reading this excellent book.

Dr. Gallin's book was my roadmap during my mother's recent illness and hospitalization. It showed me how to negotiate the very difficult path after her complex surgery, and how to deal with careless mistakes that made her recovery more challenging. This book gives important focus to all of us who are caring for and worried about ill loved ones, no matter how informed or sophisticated we are. I have given it to several friends who have family members with significant health issues.
It is easy to read, very direct and upbeat.

This book is FABULOUS if you want to learn about Ice Cream as well as make it. The author provides the background information that many a cookbook leave out so that you can understand and even troubleshoot your creations. She explains what stabilizers, emulsifiers and other ingredients do for ice cream and even includes a section the various machines available.

She includes ice cream recipies for those with dietary restrictions, soy milk, rice milk, yogurt, ices etc. as well as sherberts, sorbets, gelatos etc. There is an exhaustive "chart" which will cover just about any ingredient you can think of adding to your ice cream which gives you quantities for you to use. The author tested recipes are simple and easy to follow and those that I have tried are great.

I own many ice cream books, but if I were to recommend one book on ice cream, this would be it. This is the true bible of Ice Cream books, there is no other so complete.

Elaine Smitha has accomplished the near-impossible with her book "If You Make The Rules, How Come You're Not Boss." She's given us a book which combines user-friendly science with the power of spirit--and teaches us how to utilize both in enriching our lives.

Packed with revealing personal stories that will make you laugh, cry and deeply ponder--Elaine's book also reveals how to go far beyond what the medical profession is currently offering us--and explains in clear, concise language how to become our own body's doctors.

And this book goes far beyond the typical new-age "foo-foo feel-good" hype. Rather--Elaine gives us the leading-edge knowledge we need to self-heal and self-help ourselves--knowledge she's gleaned from decades of research (she's also personal friends with many top scientists and is a frequent guest on Gary Null's radio show).

If you're fed up with illness, disease and the monthly trips to the pharmacy; if you're tired of living a life of conformity and complacency; and if you're looking to attract and create lasting health, wealth and abundant joy in your life--this is the definitive personal-growth book for you--hands down.

Who Is Antoine Priore??

Elaine Smitha is not only the author of this in-depth, informative, plain-speak, very good, and easy read, she is also the years-long "Television Host/Producer" of her own show, "Evolving Ideas", as the book cover announces. Over those years, she's most effectively interviewed some of the most interesting people on the planet, many of them on Health, Diet, Healing, and the Envoronment; and many others on the most provocative, forward thinking concepts around. Ms. Smitha does not merely rehash what she's done before in this book, she's actually created something of her own; and in the doing she shows herself as sister, mother, wise-woman, shaman, expert, coach, inspirer, and self-healer. When Elaine needed new information she got it; and she tells us here who Antoine Priore is, and Robert O. Becker too. That alone provides some of the most fascinating material I've seen, and there's a wealth of information more. For anyone seeking knowledgeable new insight, guidance, inspiration, and the distant touch of a kind healer's strong intent, try this one.

Elaine Smitha has written a book that will touch many lives. Its central message is that our health and well being is not dependent on the drug industry and medical community's propaganda and belief systems. There is a better alternative path which puts the control back with the individual.

Have you ever tried to turn your life on and nothing happened? Have you ever said to yourself, "Let's get busy," amd there is no response? Have you ever missed doing something you really wanted to do?

Don't panic; help is at hand! Many of life's problems are easily solved, whether they are physical imbalances, invasive procedures, or psychological, social, or excessive behaviors. We just need to know how to solve these problems.

Elaine Smitha has written a book that gives examples of how the internal process can be self-controlled, and how one can obtain a balanced, happy lifestyle. The book will guide you through her awakening experiences to defeat limitations and allow her body and life to heal.

She discusses that the stimulus-response is a learned behavior, and how it will forever run your life - for good or bad unless addressed at the conscious level. The book emphasizes that you are in control, and what occurs when you realize it. Over the years, it was thought that genes were in control. At that time we were not in charge, but were simply the receivers of information about how to live and behave. It has now been discovered that genes alone do not control the self. No matter how it is stated, we are the products of our environment and characteristics acquired from our parents and peers. By loving one's self and taking control over these outside influences, a happy, fulfilling life can begin.

This book is an excellent starting point for the many people who wish to change their lives.

Yoga Guidebook

This is a book I can grab onto as a guidebook for developing my Yoga practice, as well deepening and expanding my practice. The photos allow me to have a clear vision of each posture and modifications of the pose. That really helps me and answers the questions of how to do the poses correctly. Everyday, when I roll out my yoga mat I open Sarah's book as a security blanket and a guide. Sarah has a way of helping me to learn about myself on all levels, by being curious and continually inquisitive. She invites you to experience mini-meditations in the yin yoga poses, stimulates your mind by explaining Chinese meridian lines and how we can affect them; and she offers creative ideas for a flow series to compliment the long, slow holds of yin yoga.
Sarah clearly reveals her development and passion for yoga. She invites the student to create a practice that can stir deep feelings of what being vibrantly alive really means.
Learning about the Chinese meridians and how yoga poses can clear, open and increase the amount of energy moving through the body, is invigorating and calming at that same time.
This book is terrific. I like that there are poses and sequences of poses, Chinese Meridian and organ health theory; and a collection of Pranayama breathing techniques to work with.
Sarah's explains mindfulness training clearly and gives guideline including the Four Foundations of Mindfulness explained in depth. This book is a MUST in your yoga library and yoga studio and by your yoga mat. It weaves an understanding of Yoga, Chinese Medicine and Buddhism into one guidebook that is a joy to open and explore again and again I learn something new every time I open Insight Yoga.. It is a wealth of practical and personal information for increased healing and well being.

Sarah Powers takes us to the next level where yoga can truly impact many aspects of our lives. Her intelligence, eloquence and beauty shine through on every page in simple, clear text alongside informative pictures of her innovative poses. Central to her Insight Yoga are the connections between our body, emotions and mind. Through a customizable mixture of yoga -- Yin (invented by Sarah and Paul Grilley which targets joints, tendons and ligaments and is more passive with poses held for about 3 - 5 minutes) and Yang (Hatha which targets our muscles and is more active) as well as Mindfulness Meditation, she makes it easy for us to self-regulate our energies and self-heal physically and emotionally. For anyone who wants to radiate from a core of well-being, Insight Yoga is a must.

I highly recommend Sarah Power's insightful and lucid guide to the practice of yoga and mindfulness meditation. Her clear explanation of the different threads of Hatha and Taoist yoga, as well as, the foundational ideas of Buddhism and mindfulness meditation are poetic and inspiring. She has the ability to translate Eastern thought without loosing the spirit of the teachings. In fact, she has a wonderful knack for making such teachings more accessible to the western mind. This book is great for beginners and experienced yogis alike.

Sarah Power's long awaited book is well worth the wait. Throughout the book, the written word matches her clarity, precision and depth that is so evident in her teaching. This is a wonderful, clear practical guide for anyone who wants a profound and integrated approach to the practice of Yoga. And yet it is much more than that. It is a text that integrates the subtle and complex workings of chinese medicine, Taoist thought and the understanding of the energy meridians in the body
Sarah explains and demonstrates through pictures and text how different yoga asanas and sequences are beneficial for the main meridians in the body and for the overall health of body, mind and spirit. I found the individual chapters that outlined a yoga practice for each of the meridians very helpful, clear and thorough. Not only is her writing lucid but the beautiful photos make it very easy to follow her asanas and sequences.
Throughout the book Sarah shares her depth of wisdom that she has developed through her broad study of Buddhism, Taoism and yoga. Her approach to asana practice is very refreshing because she is able to explain the deeper spiritual dimensions of yoga and how it is not just a path for physical health but ultimately a path to awareness, insight, wisdom.

Excellent book to consult on health issues!

I ran into this book by chance. I got it by mail from those book clubs that sent out stuff, and you can either pay it or return it. When I got it, I thought it was weird to receive such a big medicine book on such promotional campaigns and I was almost positive to return it, but I didn't because the book was so big I decided to keep it.
This Book is one of my favorites!! It has all the information of all illnesses, so you can read and consult any health related issue. It is very clear and encourages you to read more about how your body works and keep a healthy lifestyle.

The best of its genre

I have used this book for about five years to do introductory and background research. I own or have examined the leading competitors (Harvard, Cornell, Mayo guides). The Johns Hopkins guide is consistently the best. It provides concise and precise information and is clearly written. It is written for the intelligent and literate reader, and is less illustrated than some of the competitors, but the information content is consistently superior.

There I was able to compare it with several others in its class, anddetermined that it was the most complete and best organized for myneeds. This book contains 17 chapters dedicated to understanding different parts of the body, and the symptoms, treatment, and prognosis for any illness I have checked for so far. A 48 page insert of color pictures helps you diagnosis certain kinds of rashes, sore throats, etc. The book also has recommendations on what can be treated at home and when you should consult a doctor. There are also sections on staying healthy, first aid and emergency care. END

"The Johns Hopkins Family Health Book" is well-written, clearly organized, and very informative. I am finding it to be a valuable addition to my home library.

It gets four stars instead of five for being a bit dry, and not terribly reassuring; but on the other hand, I suppose that would be a different kind of book.

Don't hesitate to choose this work as a staple in your reference pantry!

As a father and a physician I have seen many guides written for new parents. I have been disappointed in most because of their redundancy and, often, lack of practical informatioxn. This book stands out as absolutely unique both in the quality and clarity of the writing but also because of its intuitive and almost uncanny relevance to the actual experience of being a parent. I would recommend no other resource to people who find themselves in this joyful and terrifying situation.

Being a teacher I have often utilized the KidsHealth website and found it to be an excellent and trustworthy resource. Now that I am an expecting parent I was pleased to find that the KidsHealth pediatricians recently published a guide for parents: pregnancy through age 5. The book is wonderful. The text is clear and easy to understand and the information is current. I especially liked the section on breast-feeding. I highly recommend this book to any parent or parent-to-be!

The KidsHealth Guide for Parents is a comprehensive and user-friendly guide that is a must-have for parents (the grandparents like it, too). It's filled with practical information that cover everything from basic baby care, breastfeeding & sleeping to routine health care and safety for kids through age 5, common illnesses, behavior and development, play, parenting tips, and more. A pleasure to read, and nicely organized - lots of interesting sidebars, charts, and brief sections that make the book easy to browse through and read in between feedings and changings (and the occasional nap!). Thank you!
