This man and his book (along with his web page) saved my family. My daughter had been suffering with gall bladder disease and hypothyroidism for at least 4 years. Her symptoms became so bad she would not eat due to the stress it caused her. Slowly she was exhibiting anorexic symptoms and I knew she was slowly starving and not because she was psychotic. She was hungry and would eat only 4 or 5 safe foods as they were not a distress to her system. Needless to say, I got this book, read it in a night, emailed Dr. Smedley at 6 am. After he personally called me back, we were in his office after a 2 hour drive to see him by that afternoon. Long story short, she had gall bladder surgery and is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT GIRL. The truth has to get out for those that are suffering -- he is brilliant and the most compassionate man I ever met. Those aren't my words, they are the words of the technicians he sent us to, that tested my daughter.

Even though I was able to get the gist of this book on WebMD, I liked being able to read a little more in-depth on the article Dr. Smedley. had written. I have the info at my finger tips anytime I need to reference it and I have some food prepration ideas.

All tests negative? better read on.

I am a professional pilot for a major airline. I have been to over 5 doctors. I have been sick for over 3 months. EVERY test that I have taken came back negative. here is a small list. CAT scan, 2 sonograms, hida scan, 2 complete blood work ups, 2 barium swallows. I read DR. Smedleys book and started on the no fat diet, within 3 days I felt considerably better. If you have the same problem that I have(diseased Gall Bladder) this program will work for you. As stated in the book The FINAL test that that you MUST GET to determine your illness is the CCK test. I had to fly to Kingston PA to get mine. In my opinion I feel that Dr. Smedley is an absolute genius in his knowledge of human body.
This book contains a lot of other gastro. info. This book saved my life and my job. I have the highest regards for Dr. Smedley

I had given in and met with a surgeon, for fear I would end up in the emergency room facing gall bladder surgery without a surgeon of my choice. It was a year ago and I was having constant gall bladder attacks, the gall bladder seriously inflamed each time. I found Dr.Smedley on the internet and got the book via Amazon.I felt completely better in a very short amount of time.Apart from the info regarding types of fatty foods to eliminate from the diet, I was surprised to find out that it was crucial to eliminate apples, because the pectin is a gallbladder irritant. Dr.Smedley is a lifesaver and a truely caring physician willing to share crucial knowledge.I unequivically recommend this book .

This book changed my life.

I had been to many doctors in the last five years and none could tell me why I was having these symptoms so perfectly described in Dr. Smedley's book. I had had an MRI, colonoscopy, EEG, complete blood work, Upper GI, and the list goes on. All of them turned up negative for any disease. I was desperate because no doctor would believe me when I told them I was sick. None of these doctors, whether GPs or specialists, tied these symptoms together as indicative of gall bladder and thyroid disease. My GP wanted me to see a psychiatrist, and that is where I would have ended up, had I not had a gall bladder attack, which I thought was a heart attack at first. Fortunately, I live near Dr. Smedley's office and a friend recommended him to me. He diagnosed me immediately and gave me this diet to follow. Within three days, I was feeling much, much better. Dr. Smedley is a life saver.

Food Planning

Review Date: 2008-09-09
A theme of the work is to plan healthful food
choices. Food preparation is covered in detail.
For instance, proper food portions are discussed.
An increased waistline is associated with
myeloid leukemia.

Increased muscle mass helps to burn calories
more efficiently so athletics are critical.
Model activities include walking the dog,
gardening, painting, car washing, home repairs
and vacuuming. Readers are warned not to rely
on a good metabolism alone.

A variety of healthy choices are extolled. i.e.

o fruit
o non-fat yogurt
o baked potato
o plain aired popcorn, nuts and lentils

Food content is discussed at length. For instance,
pinto beans have selenium (Se. ) . Kidney beans have fiber.
Black beans contain magnesium (Mg. ). Chick peas
contain folate and black eyed beans are high in
calcium (Ca. ) content.

The author indicates how a single sugared soda a day
may add 15 pounds or more per year. The book is an
excellent reference for trim people and dieters alike.

So far this book is giving really good advice. It isn't a page turner, however it does give you sound common sense advice about what should be in your families food choices. It makes you think, "well duh, I knew that but just wasn't applying it"!

I have been overweight most of my life and heard about this book on the radio. This book is so informative and very encouraging. I like that she doesn't make you feel like you have to do this strict plan to lose weight. She just shares a wealth of knowledge that helps you learn to make better choices. She also makes you feel like even with small changes you are making a difference for you and for your family. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend this.

In the dedication of her book, Amy brought to light her mom, "who so struggled with her weight and her happiness."

She is very honest with the term, "Fat Families, Thin Families", however, she does look to our best life collectively with our family.

In March 2008 I met and spoke with Amy at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, California earlier this year. There she let me know I could pre-order the book on amazon.com. I ordered the book from Amazon and I'm happy that I did.

Do you think/worry about the future of your children/family based on your own health?

Amy challenges us to move the target to family team lifestyle rather than on the crisis of our own personal weight loss for a season. The book challenges us and re-challenges us to think tomorrow for ourselves and generationally.

The framework of the book is the 4 P's: Plan, Prepare, Portion, and Play. The book is a vehicle to help us move together in the right direction and shifting habits to Healthy Families for Life (HFL).

Request Amy's Health Pearl For The Day on the book's website, there's a lot of great information to keep you on track.

"You'll always fail on a diet but you cannot fail on a life style change" were words spoken to me by Amy Hendel 3 years and 45 pounds ago. These words changed my life and my weight forever. I dared to believe her and put the HFL plan to the test. I had tried every diet out there with some initial success only to resort to my old style of eating which always resulted in additional weight gain. The HFL plan really does work. You will not feel hungry, you will have success, and your health will improve. You will love going shopping for clothes and will like what you see in the mirror - even the 3 way mirror in the store dressing rooms.

If you're looking for an exercise regime to complement the Fat Flush Diet Plan, then this is the book for you. Besides recommended exercises for the three phases of the Fat Flush Diet, Ann Gittleman and Joanie Greggains go into other information that is just as important as exercising for the diet to succeed. These are: dry brushing for the lymph system; proper sleep; using essential oils for your bath. They also discuss cellulite, and how best to diminish it. I found the book very useful and informative. I love using my rebounder! I recommend this book very highly.

As usual, this book is very informative, so I give her three stars in that respect. Her books in general paint a splendid natural way to eat for health-conscious people that harkens to a time when organic food was the norm. Sometimes I slap myself when I realize what brave new world we exist in now when eating organic food is a luxury. Who knew that one day we would have to pay ridiculous prices to avoid eating hormone-pumped chickens allowed to sit and fatten in cages under artificial light while being fed animal byproducts to boot? "Organic" food now costs two to three times more than conventional food.

I have nothing but appreciation for nutritionists now. When I was young and couldn't comprehend death, I've been known to shew away nutritionists with one hand and with a candy bar in the other. Now they're my mystic advisers who are themselves advised by science; this regimen is a reliable and sound one. I have been on this plan for one week. I have already lost six pounds.

Most importantly, I have gained mental clarity and stability. I have recently been severely depressed and was prescribed antidepressants. This regimen was my last hope that I can reverse the problem myself. I believe, as a result of this diet (flaxseed oil in particular), my moods are not so strong and intrusive. I still feel frustration, but it's no longer overpowering and I can usually persist through my problems. I also feel energized. So that desire to oversleep is almost completely eliminated. And there is still more to come as I walk toward that horizon of more possibilities -- exercise!

Works for Me!

As a veteran dieter I am slow to jump on new diet plans. However, I quickly learned that Fat Flush is not just a new approach to weight loss but an attempt at a higher standard of nutritional health and well-being.

I found this book and the plan it outlines to be exceptionally beneficial toward my weight correction goals and toward general health improvement efforts. I think the menus are tasty and satisfying. I find Ann Louise Gittleman to be very thorough in her concerns for the overweight and addresses many more issues than just what to eat. I find her book and the resources she offers in it to be very helpful.

I wholeheartedly recommend the book to anyone struggling with weight problems. I wholeheartedly recommend the book to anyone concerned with their health.

This book was well written and easy to read. Finally a fitness plan that works in harmony with your body and your total overall health. I like that the book not only goes in detail (including pictures ) about the fitness plan but also includes important information about cleansing our lymphatic system, reducing stress, eating well and giving us the knowledge and tools to create a healthy body from within as well as being fit on the outside. It complements my other book the fat flush plan, lost 45 lbs. Thanks for turning my size 14 body to size 5!

Ya hafta love a book (Fat Flush Fitness Plan) that advises you to take a long, scented, therapeutic bath three times a week as an aid to appetite suppression! (I'm sooooooooo there!)(page 165)
And dry skin brushing! I mean, who knew?! Since starting this regimen, my skin is soft as silk AND I have the added smug knowledge that this routine aids the lymphatic system in flushing fat!
Add to these activities some yoga, stretching, rebounding, and cardio workout and you have a varied, supportive exercise regimen that seems more like fun than a chore. (Let's face it, there's no such thing as a too tight [rear]!)
Bottom line: this is a smart book. You NEED this book! You WANT this book! You DESERVE this book!

This cookbook is excellent! The food tastes great, and can be made with ordinary ingredients that are at any respectable grocery store. Many soups can be adapted to crock pots, making them easier yet, and I just love that the recipes are all very healthy and easy to make. Even the desserts are healthy (but really good) and to many you can add a serving of ice cream if you want to.

Dr. Streissguth is one of the pioneers in the identification and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the entire spectrum of congenital damage arising from in-utero exposure to alcohol. 25 years after the identification of this common and devastating disability, most efforts in the academic community still focus on definition and diagnosis, with relatively little attention paid to treatment. Dr. Streissguth stands atop the heap in extending her basic science research into the actual lives of affected individuals, their families, and the communities in which they live. I consider her the foremost authority in the academic community on exploring pragmatic options for helping affected individuals, families, and community.

This little volume is jam packed with useful information.

After reading Dr. Streissguth's book on fetal alcohol syndrome, I feel this book should be given to every parent or caretaker who receives this diagnosis about their child. This is the most thorough book I have found on this subject. Dr. Streissguth's knowledge in this area is so extensive and her book offers a step by step approach and guidelines on what you will need to know to in raising a child with FAS. I truly recommend her book and am so grateful for her insights.

Dr. Streissguth's Book is the best explanation of the effects of alcohol on the unborn child, that I have ever found. For years, I did not know what was wrong with the beautiful little girl that my husband and I adopted. Twenty-seven doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, school counsellors, guidance counsellors, religious leaders, police or addictions counsellors over the past 16 years never once, suggested that FAS/E was the problem. For every person in those positions dealing with troubled children, "Fetal Alchohol Syndrome: A Guide for Families and Coommunities" should be compulsory reading!
I cried over and over while I read the book when I saw how my community, my family and I had let my daughter down, because we didn't know. I wrote to Dr. Streissguth and thanked her personally, and I am doing my best to help my daughter and to educate others, so no one has to fail their child the way we did. Thank you again, Dr. Streissguth!

I got the book, Fit and Fat, and read it from cover to cover, stopping several times to conduct certain "tests" (surveys, questionnaires, fit tests) on myself. When I completed the test on myself, I did the tests on my husband, my mom, my best friend and in some of the classes that I teach! I found the tests the funnest part in the book. But what I like to tell others is that you really can be fit AND fat, and I want people to look "inside: at the heart muscle" to determine how fit they are. In fact, just look at the mortality table to make the point that if you are Fit and Not Fat, you will die at the same rate as someone who is Fit and Fat (read the book for the research studies on this one!). Get it and share it with someone you love. It could save their life!

And another thing...has anyone else noticed that on the cover of most women's magazines you are given teaser titles on how to loose 10 pounds fast, and than in the bottom corners, pictures of cookies and 19 layer chocolate cakes?

Keep Fit & Healthy... Even While Traveling!

Review Date: 2008-09-03
A few years ago, Americans were stunned one night to learn that David Bloom, a well-known and popular thirty-something reporter for NBC News, had died suddenly while covering the war in Iraq. The cause of death was reportedly "deep vein thrombosis," a blood clot brought about by immobility. In Bloom's case, this seemed to mean repeated immobility from cramped spaces in small vehicles into which he squeezed daily while traveling throughout the war zone.

The shock of Bloom's death led Maggie Melanson to commit herself to finding a way to educate others about the importance of keeping fit and healthy even while traveling. In "Fly Fit: How to Travel and Stay Agile" (HRD Press, 2007), she fulfills her promise, outlining health and fitness tips that can be observed and practiced even while trapped on a long plane flight or waiting endlessly at an airport terminal for the signal to board.

"Fly Fit" tailors its fitness recommendations to the restrictions of such travel conditions. While boxed in on the plane itself, readers learn how to manage resistance exercises. While waiting in the terminal, they learn suggested yoga poses. Whether on the plane or stuck at the gate, readers will acquire details aerobics and stress reduction techniques. All of these can be done quietly, carefully and unobtrusively, yet effectively.

Author Maggie Melanson comes to her book's subject matter with a wealth of personal experience as her guide. The founder of a successful "healthy foods" catering service, she once determined to change her own unhealthy ways by revving up a personal exercise and meditation regime as well as shedding fifty excess pounds. In "Fly Fit," she reveals her own personal challenges during this transformation as she advocates the value of toting healthy attitudes and practices alongside our suitcases even when traveling far, far from home.

I love this little book. Ms. Melanson offers so much sound advice that seems easy to follow in an airport or sitting on an airplane. I can't wait to try it out when I go to Chicago next spring. The book, although small enough to fit in a purse or even a jacket pocket, is packed with practical tips and concise instructions on how to get the most out of its advice. A great stocking stuffer or office grab gift. I sure could have used this book on my trip to Italy last year!

This book is an excellent informative book, on how to use food, diet and herbs to get well. Unfortunately in the United States we seem to be lacking in the food education department. With the simplistic, dated food guide pyramid that many of us base "healthy" eating choices on, we still don't know what to eat, to keep us feeling well, and healthy. For example a "grain is a grain" at the base of the pyramid, our starting point, gives us so little information to keep us healthy. Is eating a piece of chemical ladden, processed fluffy white bread the same as eating a piece of luscious, rich whole grain pure bread? According to our Food Guide pyramid it is.
Dr. Khalsa helps us get back to the basics of nutrition. It was such an interesting book to read. He made it simple for someone like me who doesn't like veggies that much. He gives excellent statistics, and recipes. Later in the book he gives specific nutrient and food information, as well as suggestions for herb use in specific diagnosis related illnesses. He has chapters on gender specific nutrition, and some excellent Resource ideas in the back of the book. It is worth it!

This is a an excellent, informative book about the importance of food for a healthy body. Written by a doctor and kundalini yoga practitioner. Backed by legitimate research and self discovery. Delicious recipes in every chapter. This book is not just for yogis, but for anybody interested in a long, healthy life. NO scam diets. No false promises. Just the facts. The book will open your eyes to the importance of using food as medicine. Read and eat well!

This is a tremendously helpful book. The author is a physician who's also a believer in the spiritual aspects of health and nutrition. As a result, the book is as practical and grounded in science as you'd expect from an M.D., while providing an enlightened underpinning for what he teaches. Best of all, you can just look up what ails you, or what part of your physiological being could be improved, and find exactly which foods to eat to treat yourself well. Even if you don't buy the spiritual stuff, the nutritional advice is flawless and easy to use. This book goes on the shelf right next to Dr. Andrew Weil. I recommend it that highly.

"Your body has the ability to heal itself if you just give it a chance. Using food as medicine gives [you] the greatest chance of all to heal....What you eat can either prevent cancer and other chronic illnesses or help cause them....My number one recommendation is to eat a rainbow of fresh fruits and vegetables every day." Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D.

FOOD AS MEDICINE is a must-read for all, particularly those who dislike fruits and/or vegetables but want to be healthy and prevent diseases because the doctor explains clearly and succinctly what each food can do for your body. He also has a chapter about each common illness and what he recommends eating to overcome the illness. He reminds us that by cutting down on total calories consumed while eating nutritionally dense food, we can increase our life span by as much as thirty percent.
Dr. Khalsa writes a chapter about each of his seven principles of yoga nutritional therapy to help you restore balance to your body, mind and soul. They are:
1 Detoxify your body. (If fasting isn't for you, you can take two 450 mg aloe vera tablets at night or go on a monodiet.)
2 Go organic. ("The switch to organic food is vital if we are to save our environment.")
3 Limit or eliminate genetically engineered foods. (Examples include: aspartame, canola, corn, cotton, crook-necked yellow squash, dairy products, papaya, potatoes, soybeans, and tomatoes.)
4 Eat clean protein. (Buffalo, rabbit, ostrich, and venison are some non-traditional sources. I personally enjoy the latter very much. Choose chicken and fish--preferably wild salmon or other oily fish. Shark, swordfish and tuna also have potential problems with contamination--mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenic. Also soy protein and definitely beans and legumes are great--they have almost no fat and are rich in fiber and good carbohydrates.)
5 Discover juicing and supplements. (I don't do this one because there is more fiber in the fruit than the juice and that is good if you want to avoid getting type 2 diabetes down the road.)
6 Cook consciously and eat mindfully. (Chew slowly, savor your food, sit down and relax and "remember that everything we eat comes from God, as do our health and healing.")
7 Make the transition to the yoga nutritional therapy diet. ("By following a plant-based diet, you will find that you have improved focus and higher productivity in your daily life.")

My favorite part is the valuable information about each food (chapter 5) as well as the anti-aging in chapter 18. I've eaten blueberries every day since I've read this book because "blueberrries contain the highest antioxidant capability...comes from a class of flavonoids called anthocyanins...blueberries protect against brain aging, heart disease and cancer. The most astounding aspect of research on blueberries has been in the area of brain longevity."

Soar into healthy eating! Just adding one fruit or vegetable a day is a good habit to start. Do it!

Recently, I was diagnosed with renal failure. Immediately after the diagnosis I began a search for cook books and other helpful resources on kidney-friendly diets. I read the section of this book that was on kidney disease and kidney health and fell in love with it immediately. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who wants to make a change in their life.

I first read this in surgical residency (on the west coast at a place very much like Pacific Hospital) in the 1980's and found his thesis very insightful. It was the first time anyone talked systematically about medical errors. Residency training was changing even then, and must be very different now-I practice in a rural area far from the ivory towers-but despite being technically very innovative, surgery is a very conservative field. I like to believe the vigilance and the sense of personal responsibility to one's surgical patients remains as strong. My thinking about errors has evolved, but the gut feeling of personal responsibility for error instilled 20 years ago in residency, is as much a habit as the rituals of sterile technique. This book is a must for anyone wishing to understand medical errors and how to reduce them.

This book gives an astounding and unprecedented look into the social structure of the surgeon. After graduation from medical school, I spent 7 years in residency and another 13 years teaching surgery to residents. This book gives a sensitive and accurate description of the ethos of surgery and shows why being a surgeon is who someone "is" and not what someone "does".

Highly recommended for upcoming residents

This book is required reading at my ENT residency, for good reason. Bosk applies a somewhat technical (for me) sociological paradigm to a surgical residency, focusing on the relationships between faculty and residents. Again and again the issues that he so clearly elucidated come up throughout my residency. It is doubtfully of use to non-physicians, but I highly recommend it if you are beginning residency.

While other reviewers focus on how Bosk examines medical ethics, as a researcher focusing on organizational behavior and quality, I find this a fascinating study of two broader topics. First, Bosk presents a sociological taxonomy of error that anticipates later work on human error (Reason's "Human Error," Perrow's "Normal Accidents"). Second, his discussion of the process of professional socialization is a must read for anyone doing work on management and the professions.

It Reminds Physicians of our Responsibilities

As a medical student at the University of Chicago, Forgive and Remember helped shape my view of what good, caring physicians need to do when policing their own. I am currently on the quality assurance committees at three hospitals where I practice. I am buying several copies of Forgive and Remember for my committee colleagues who have not read this book.

The temptations of money over our patient's best interest, the medical malpractice environment, and the difficulties of practicing medicine in the era of managed care have made it diffuclt for well intentioned physicians to make a difference in the quality of care provided in our communities. I think this book will help me and my colleagues fufill the responsibilities the hospitals and our commununities have given us.

I truly believe all health care providers, attorneys involved with medical malpractice cases, and people interested in the delivery of healthcare need to read this book. It brings into perspective how all health care providers, from surgeons to orderlies, are human and make mistakes. It also shows how some mistakes are hard to forgive. As physicians we have to take this into account while assuring we always keep the interest of all patients, our own and those of other physicians, are well looked after.

I hope that in my local community all people will trust that their health care providers, despite the outcome of their care, did a good, competent job. Everyone alive, including physicians and our families, will someday become a patient.

In life it is important for all of us to learn from our mistakes.
